My son has truly enjoyed working out at ASP. He always felt welcomed and supported. He has been training with ASP for about 4 months and I can already see an improvement in his performance in swimming. Definitely a great opportunity that I would recommend to any others looking to improve their swimmer's capabilities. My son feels ASP is without a doubt a gym that could help a swimmer achieve his or her goals.

I enjoyed training with Aquatic Sports Performance (ASP) when I visited for 4 sessions (2 gym, 2 swim) over 2 days while in San Diego and LA. Sean's swim specific physical assessment and benchmarking against other athletes was very helpful in identifying where to improve flexibility/mobility, power and strength. The high level of detail and data measured allowed a program to be designed specifically focussing on these weaknesses which Sophie delivered perfectly in the gym (which has excellent equipment, large and clean). For the swim sessions Marina was particularly knowledgeable. Very quick to pick up subtle areas for technique improvement and work out drills to try to fix. Very perceptive, fun, able to explain and demonstrate well, and a high level of swimming IQ. The coordination between trainers was excellent. My high expectations going into the sessions were exceeded. I really appreciated training with a team passionate and dedicated to improving all areas of swimming performance.

Genuinely could never recommend this place enough. I’m a remote athlete out of Ohio, so I haven’t personally been to this gym. However every single person at ASP has an incredible passion and work ethic for what they do. What they are doing to their athletes, as well as the swimming community as a whole is nothing short of incredible. If you’re not following aquatic sports performance, their athletes, their stories, and their information, frankly you’re falling behind. ASP is the future. Pursue Potential.

I’ve been training for three months now with Aquatic Sports Performance as an “online athlete,” and the online dryland program is simply brilliant: perfectly tailored gym sessions that directly complement the water training — improving body position, feel for the water, strength, and especially mobility.

Even as an online athlete, the support is outstanding. Sean and his team impress with incredible expertise and a great, friendly attitude. Questions are answered thoroughly, and you’re perfectly supported in your daily training routine.

Simply absolutely recommendable. Thank you so much for that!

Aquatic Sports Performance has been an incredible place for my kids. Since joining, they have become not only physically stronger but also more confident and mentally resilient. Coaches Sean and Sid, along with their amazing team, are truly dedicated professionals. They are knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely care about helping every athlete reach their goals. The positive environment they've created has made a huge difference in my children’s athletic journey, and I’m so grateful for the growth we’ve seen. Highly recommend to any swimmer looking to take their performance to the next level!

Knowledgeable, friendly, dedicated trainers is what you will find at ASP. I truly appreciate the interest the trainers take in my daughter’s training development in each session and help her build strength, increase endurance, and improve recovery in the water. She has consistent improvement in her strokes times but more importantly, she has more confidence in every aspect of swim both in and out of the water that I can attribute to her trainers and swim coaches. Thank you.

My daughter started at ASP last year and it has been a great experience. The trainers tailor the workouts to her age and ability and continually support her. With the progress she has been making my son just joined and even though he’s a baseball athlete they have a full regimen for all athletes not just aquatics. It’s been great for both of my kids.

Coach Sean and his team are phenomenal! We appreciate how methodical he is in his training for his athletes. Our daughter enjoys working out at ASP because of the coaches, the environment, and striving to attain the goals she’s set for herself in her swimming career. She feels stronger and continues to see improvement in the gym as well as in the pool.

UPDATE: Our daughter has definitely gotten stronger physically. She continues to drop quite a substantial amount of time at each meet. Coach Sean and his trainers are exceptional and truly care about their athletes!

2nd UPDATE: After a shoulder injury in August 2024 and four months of physical therapy, our daughter returned to training with ASP in January. She’s been excited to work again with Coach Sean, Coach Sid, and the team. Coach Sean has carefully tailored her sessions to support her recovery, helping her regain strength and mobility. She has been able to drop time again in her events which has been super encouraging!

Our experience at Aquatic Sports Performance has been amazing. Both of my kids have been training here for almost two years, and the improvement we’ve seen in their strength, mobility, and overall athletic performance has been incredible.

This facility truly specializes in training aquatic athletes — helping swimmers become faster, stronger, and more resilient in the water. The coaching staff is knowledgeable, supportive, and committed to helping each swimmer reach their full potential.

If you have a swimmer who is serious about improving their swimming career, I highly recommend Aquatic Sports Performance. It’s the perfect place for athletes who want to take their performance to the next level.

Coach Sean and the ASP team are amazing! I can't praise them enough. Throughout my 2 years with ASP, Coach Sean helped me train through a bicep injury, scoliosis issues, and build up strength to become a better swimmer. Coach Sean and the ASP team are knowledgeable, communicative, and encouraging. They create an ideal environment to train athletes, young and old, beginner and elite.

I started ASP in the last week of December (2024) and have seen significant improvements in my core strength and mobility in less than 4 months. During the evaluation what struck me was that Sean spent time identifying the core areas that had to be worked upon to make me a stronger/faster swimmer, and those efficiency areas were spot on. Focusing on mobility has greatly assisted me in areas where I’ve had opportunities to improve, and this wouldn’t have been possible without Sean, in particular, taking the time to understand these opportunities. The entire program has a solid structure with using technology to log workouts and then taking notes, which has also been a big difference from past programs that I was a part of. Thank you ASP, you rock!

I have been training at ASP for the past 3 years. Through these past 3 years I have hit a majority of my swimming goals, learned new ways of training, and made many new friends along the way. The asp staff are consistently asking me what my goals are to help further my training. Not only do the asp staff explain how to do the necessary movements to help me with my goals, they explain how it correlates to my swimming. I remember I was showing Coach Sean a video of me swimming and he saw that how I was breathing was inefficient, then explained to me how to fix it. Asp is a fun and motivating environment that anyone will enjoy regardless of their skill level or age. The training at ASP is well worth the investment. I can't wait to continue my training here, and would encourage anyone wanting any extra conditioning for water sports to schedule an initial assessment today.

ASP provides personalized training specifically for competitive swimmers. My daughter has been enjoying going to ASP for a year now.
She had injured her knee during one of the swim meets in the beginning of the year and had surgery in August. It didn’t stop her going to ASP. Coach Sean and his team had put a personalized workout set for her to strengthen her upper body during the knee recovery period.
She just had her 1st meet back from knee recovery, she managed to drop some times in her events.

We found out about ASP during C19 lockdown when they created dry land workout routines for swimmers when the pool or gym was unavailable. They came up with really creative ways to train with zero gym equipment, explained each exercise (sometimes with video clips) and how it correlated to movement in the water. It made dry land meaningful and it made an impact on my swimmer. Once pools opened up I knew I wanted my swimmer to train with ASP. In the short time, we’ve seen huge improvements in swim times and overall fitness. Bonus, ASP makes training interesting and fun. We’re so pleased with the training, we recommend him to our friends and fellow athletes!

I met with Sean twice a week for a year, while I was a student. Sean was an amazing trainer. He kept track of workouts and created plans to optimize my training progression while tailoring it to fit my specific goals, needs and abilities. My bench press went from 75lbs for a one-rep max to doing 3 reps at 105lbs, and my deadlift went from 155lbs to 205lbs, as a 30-year-old female with some foundational prior training. Sean always kept our workouts fun and engaging, all I had to do was show up and he took care of the rest. From my end, it seemed like just fun, but he was meticulously choosing each exercise to fit within the larger plan. Each movement had a purpose. We worked the minor supporting muscles that are often neglected but played a large role in advancing my main lifts. I appreciated his dedication to the science which motivated each session. As a behavioral health scientist, I would frequently ask him difficult questions regarding the specifics to the risks/benefits of each movement, he was always up-to-date on the latest research and could discuss why we do what, when and how, and even for whom it could be contraindicative. I continue to keep in touch with Sean, despite living in separate states, to ask advice and discuss best practices. If you are looking for more than a mundane workout, then you want to work with Sean Kao. Sean is an excellent personal trainer with expertise in exercise science. It was important for me to have a trainer that understood the science behind the movements in order to prevent injury and safely build strength and increase endurance. I feel confident referring anyone to Sean. He can work with anyone from someone just starting to contemplate an exercise routine to a collegiate athlete, for a wide range of goals such as weight loss, strength/performance, biomarkers of health, or just learning new exercises and having someone to hold you accountable.

Coach Sean is an expert in strength training for swimmer. Swimmers require totally different muscle training programs than normal bodybuilding. Coach Sean himself is an elite swimmer so he knows exactly what muscles are used in a given stroke and how to improve the strength of those muscles without beefing up the body. My daughter has gone through 3 months training with coach Sean and she has dropped her time significantly in all her events.

I normally don’t get excited to go to the gym but when i started training here i ALWAYS get hyped to do the new workouts that Sean creates and on top of that i get to train with my friends. The environment and energy in this gym will make you want to workout 24/7. Sean always pushes me to do things I thought I wasn’t capable of. This program definitely plays a huge role in my swimming improvements and is more impactful compared to a public gym.

Sean is a great trainer. He breaks down the aspects of each workout to better enchance my performance. I have already seen improvements in both my 100 and 200 freestyle. Everytime I go in the mornings, my mood is so much better throughout the day. I would recommend to anyone who not only wants to improve their athletics, but their overall health :)

Sean is one of the best coachesI’ve ever had. He has been one of my coaches for the last 4 years. He is always pushing me to work my hardest and go beyond. He always asks me how my day is and he genuinely wants to know. Aquatics sports performance has helped me feel and do good while in practice and even better in swim meets. His workouts are fun and challenging and he creates a good and enjoyable environment within his gym. I will be going to aquatic sports performance for a long time.

I appreciate the dedication of the ASP team and how the program is individually tailored to the athlete. Sean is very personal and extremely organized. I also really value the approach of injury prevention while strengthening for the specific sport and focusing the body’s mobility to achieve the athlete’s goal. My daughter has gained both physical and mental strength working with Sean and ASP.

I first started training at ASP with Sean back in March of this year. I had certain goals I wanted to achieve during both my senior year high school season and during my last summer long course season before heading to college. Because of covid, the weight room at my club team was closed so I didn't have access to lift weights with a trainer. What I love about ASP is not only the amazing environment and lovely staff, but also the options we can choose for our workouts and the personalized workouts that best suits our own needs. My club team had access to the weight room shortly after I started training with Sean, but I continued to train with him on my own time. I was confident in his training, and I definitely felt stronger and more confident in myself in and out of the pool from his workouts. The amount of motivation I have gained from training at ASP is surreal, and going there was always something I looked forward to throughout every week. Since 2019, I haven't been able to go best times at meets. With the help of Sean and two other coaches (Courtney and Andrew), I was able to go 5 best times over this past summer. I highly recommend athletes to go and try out some workouts with Sean. Not only is he a great coach, but he's a great mentor and someone who has a great understanding in athletics.

I started training with Sean this past summer over the past 3 months because ever since COVID I haven't been able to swim and lift a lot. With my college shutting down my sophomore season even for practice, I was out of shape and finally was able to go to the gym early January 2021. Although I had a place to lift, it was hard to stay motivated and get myself back into shape. This past summer, Sean has gotten me back into physical shape and even stronger. Comparing myself from 3 months to now I see tremendous growth in lifting heavier and better technically, in addition, gaining in physical mass which I have been struggling with all my life. I see Coach Sean more as a mentor to me in helping me improve out of the pool and I can't wait to come back during my breaks to train with Sean.

I have no clue where to even start? The advanced and fun workouts that he writes, differing depending on the individual's needs, size, etc., or the enthusiasm and dedication he puts into making you a better athlete? I've been training with Sean for only about a year and I can definitely feel that I have more power in the water and it definitely helped me achieve my goal of Olympic Trials. Would definitely recommend.

I live in Arizona and heard of Sean through another Arizona swim family and I have been nothing short of impressed. Sean does a great job at the beginning to assess what your goals are, how he can help you achieve them and is available to any and all questions. When he doesn't know the answer (which rarely happens) he doesn't try to string me along. His rapport with my teen age son is incredible and I love how comfortable he made my son. My son looks forward to the workouts and I can see a difference already. Once meets start happening again I cannot wait to see the difference.

Coach Sean is by far the best strength conditioning coach I've ever had. He includes a variety of workouts in all of his programs fully tailored to meet everyone's fitness goals. During my time as a Varsity Water Polo player, I wish I had someone like Coach Sean to help me. He has a good understanding of the kinesiology and athleticism of the sport, as it reflects in his demonstrations I've seen. Even now he has been so helpful keeping me in shape, emphasizing good technique and being so encouraging yet patient. Highly recommend for athletes of any level and really anyone. Coach Sean will be your guide.

I reached out to sean about strength training because I was having lower back pain and my job requires me to lift heavy items. I wanted guidance on how to properly lift and improve my strength in general. I have never done strength training or lifted weights before. Sean has come up with workouts tailored to my needs and explained everything along the way. He is encouraging and pushes me to improve. He’s patient and will demonstrate all the different exercises. He is following all the covid guidelines and I feel safe working out with him. I would recommend sean to anyone who wants an incredibly knowledgeable personal trainer. I’m happy to report my back pain has decreased significantly. Thank you sean!

I've been working out with Sean for some time now and I cannot stress enough the importance of having a solid trainer. I've always had gym memberships and been to couple crossfit gyms but the way Sean was able to get to the root of my problems was different. Sean was very attentive and personal. He listened to my goals and needs. He is very knowledgeable and gave his input as to what areas I would need to focus on in order to achieve my goals. After couple months of working out with Sean, I am seeing major results! Sean and I have a goal of getting my big 3 workouts (bench, squat, deadlift) to 800 lbs by end of 2021!

As a former Division 1 college swimmer, it’s been a real treat to watch my daughter have access to a dryland coach that knows swimming so well. All of her dryland exercises with Sean have a purpose, translating to improved strokes and speed in the water. Since starting Sean’s program two short months ago, my daughter has increased her power in the water and lowered her times.

We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Sean who is so knowledgeable about the human body and swimming, but also extremely positive and supportive.

This review is long overdue!  It's been almost a 6 months now since I since I trained with Sean.

Coming in my overhead and shoulder mobility was lacking, Sean was able to address this and create an amazing 10 session program specifically working on technique and overhead stability. Sean really catered to what I needed to be able to perform those movements proficiently by taking it back to basics and retraining the way I thought about those movements.  By the end of the 10 sessions I hit PR's in both my Snatch and Clean & Jerk.

Even if you are not a swimmer I highly recommend Sean!

I have been working with Sean on my strength training for four years now and most recently working on strength training that translates to my swimming. I can't recommend Sean enough! I decided that I wanted to come back to competing in 2019 after I retired in 2016 and Sean has helped me every step of the way and has made remote coaching a breeze. He is always available to answer any of my questions about programming or certain movements. He is open to listening to my suggestions about what I feel like I need in my training and is constantly checking in to see what progress I've made. Since my retirement I've qualified for US Olympic Trials in the 50 and 100 free and I don't think I would have been able to do that without the help of Sean! Thank you you for pushing me to be the best athlete I can!
