This place is everything I could want in a yoga studio. The classes are challenging & fun, and the community is warm and welcoming. Do yourself a favor if you want an incredible yoga experience, and go to Asta!

The most incredible yoga studio in all of SF for advanced Ashtangis and beginners alike. My practice has advanced immeasurably since coming here 3 years ago thanks to Steve, Gary, and the other incredible instructors. Also has an incredible community - Sunday primary series is always followed by chai and hanging out - it’s become a ritual and sanctuary!

I have attended class as a traveler three times at this studio and have enjoyed myself each time. They have created a great, relaxed community of people and a room where there no shortage of inspiration for development exists.

I enjoyed two classes this last weekend with chai and pastry after the Sunday ashtanga series, a first-for-me experience at a studio.

For me, the instructors and community make this a place to which I am certain to return.

Phenomenal yoga studio. I can’t recommend it enough. I would give it 6 stars if I could. Has changed my life.

I started yoga 3 months ago for the first time and attended regularly. In my first few weeks Steve and Gary went the extra mile to help me learn the poses and the breathing. I wasn’t able to do the basic poses. My head was full of thoughts and I was distracted and uncomfortable.

In just 3 months Steve and Gary took me from 0 to doing the full Ashtanga primary series while relaxed and focused. Besides all of the poses I can now do (lotus, handstand, headstand, and a lot more), I leave each class feeling amazing. My body and mind feel dramatically better all throughout the day. This dramatic improvement would have been impossible without their dedicated guidance and effort.

I don’t think I could have asked for a better experience. The music and vibe of the place is also amazing.

Thanks so much Gary and Steve!

During my visit to SF, I was happy to find a Asta Yoga offering Ashtanga practice and went for their classes. I really enjoyed the practice and highly recommend SF locals and travelers to check it out. The Studio is very well maintained and was extremely neat and clean. Also, there was ample space for everyone to practice. Steve is an excellent teacher and makes the entire studio and the yoga experience a very welcoming experience.

It's very hard to find good Asthanga practitioners around, and I'm so glad Asta Yoga provides these classes and guide the students through! Thank you! I'll keep coming back here whenever I'm in town!

I’ve been studio-hopping across the city until I found the gem that is Asta. Steve and Gary are experienced yogi practitioners and teachers, and I love practicing in this welcoming space with many friendly yogis.

Asta has helped me deepen my yoga practice over the years. The style of yoga is Ashtanga-based, which is a traditional practice that has been around for decades — not one of those fitness fads that come and go! I highly recommend that you check this place out!

wow i really just struck out with my first visit to asta yoga, a studio that teaches traditional ashtanga and derivatives of it. i had a most unwelcoming reception indeed. the person at the desk seemed terribly inconvenienced by having to ask me how to spell my name, and when i shared with the teacher that i have some injuries (for which i know how to modify) he took on a fake pitying tone and acted like i was some kind of hopeless invalid who wouldn’t be able to complete the requisite moves of the series. it was insulting. they were snobs. maybe my vibes were off tonight. maybe it was me. but dang. yoga studios are usually sanctuaries. this didn’t feel like that for me tonight.

update: bumping this rating from one to three stars after getting a kind email response from the teacher

I am so happy I discovered this studio. I did ashtanga with the teacher before, but I never went to the school that is all ashtanga orientated. It’s exactly what I need right now - the structure, and the monitoring of my own progress through the practice. Plus I like to experience slightly different approach from each instructor.
Thank you, Ashta Yoga.

There truly isn't a yoga studio in SF with a program better than Asta. They specialize in Ashtanga and Rocket yoga, exclusively. If you are bored of your Vinyasa classes and want to take your practice up a few notches, consider doing Rocket @ Asta. It was transformative for me to learn about Rocket yoga here and get exposed to a more disciplined, no bs practice.
Steve and Rene run this studio, and they are both fantastic teachers. Nice little community of repeat practitioners as well, so it's a friendly and non intimidating circle to level up your practice :)

The teachers here are quite advanced and practicing with them will challenge you and inspire your own practice. At my Saturday 10am class with Tara, we did a lot of core work at the beginning and the teacher guided us through a sequence with arm balances that linked each pose. We did quite a bit of prep work for handstands as well and I definitely felt that I could hang on a little bit longer in handstand by the end of the class. I didn’t see the teacher give any hands on adjustments in class though, and this is something that I look forward to when I go to yoga class. The studio has a nice lounge area where you check in and a few changing rooms and cubbies to store your things. Because it is located in the Mission, they close or lock the iron gates during class to make sure there are no disturbances. The studio is warmed to about 75 degrees, just enough for you break a sweat and activate your flexibility, but not so warm that you are slipping and sliding in crow pose.

Pros
1.) Advanced teachers and advanced clientele which means you can grow your own practice further, if that’s what you are looking to do
2.) Studio space itself is quite convenient; it’s located near a lot of food options and has a spacious area to hang out before and after class.

Cons

1.) No showers and only one bathroom; there is often a line to use the bathroom
2.) The practice studio’s floor is carpeted which I suppose is better for your joints or minor falls (but a Manduka Pro mat would be sufficient); I went to a Saturday 10am class and everything smelled fresh, but it was the first class of the day. I would imagine that it would be a bit more gross if you had to practice right after a sweaty class.

I can’t say enough positive things about Steve & Rene. Thank you to them and other students at AstaYoga for sharing what they’ve learned from Larry Schultz. I’m very grateful for their teachings and the transcendence of the Rocket. The studio is beautiful, clean and the community is warm and friendly. The most peaceful place I’ve shared my practice in. I’ve completed both the 200hr immersion and the 50hr Rocket training here - I will be back for more!

Love this studio. For me, it's a continuation of It's Yoga, which was founded by Larry Schultz who created the Rocket series- what they teach at Asta. If you want to get in shape and have an authentic yoga experience, go to Asta. All of their teachers are great!
