Perfect in the early morning, starts getting busy around 7 on weekdays. Weekend mornings pretty clear. Cleaning equipment at every machine, duplicates of every machine. Free weights, squat racks, and benches are pretty limited, but there are x4 of each type of dumbbell. Scary when crowded.

What a gem of a gym. Of course it is Summer time so there are no summer Blues to sing here. It's not crowded at the moment. Rad equipment, towels and spray bottles galore, and the pool! What's not to like. Students everywhere but the best kept secret in town is memberships are available for the general population. You want to pay $188.00 a month for the new Santa Cruz Athletic Club and park in Jeff Bezo's parking lot? Knock yourself out. No pool you realize. I'll take UCSC Rec Fitness Center six ways to Sunday for the views alone. The Monterey Bay and deer! You feel like you're at a retreat. It's a huge secret. So now you know. As for the less stellar reviews, well, they're young - they'll learn to appreciate things eventually.

Nice, clean gym with great views from the second floor. Only problem is that its max capacity is 150 people, and even when itβs not at max capacity itβs usually super crowded and thereβs a wait for most machines. Could do with about 50% less cardio equipment and that much more strength training equipment.

It's alright. Middle of the road. -1 star for changing the fly machine to that new uncomfortable one and -1 star for downright removing the assisted pullup machine

It's a nice gym, it gets very busy though as it is not large enough to accommodate all the UCSC students adequately.

People are friendly. However, space can be more efficiently used. I heard once that there was a place for a gym in the west field.

Everyone's friendly but the limited gym space is under utilized. Get rid of (at least) half of the treadmills that aren't being used, and double up on machines that always have lines of students waiting. This is a relatively quick solution, no new construction is required, just good planing of space and resource allocation, given the funds exist. With more students than ever before, the funds should be available.

It's way too small for a university of this size. Nice otherwise.

the facility is absolutely beautiful, the machines and weights are more than satisfactory (besides the lack of a decent cable row machine) but the facility suffers from one fatal flaw, the attendees. By no means am I a body builder, but I understand basic gym etiquette. In contrast, some of the huge number of people who perpetually fill this gym do not. Many benches are left sweaty and unwiped after use, people rack their weights incorrectly and leave bars and attachments around the cable machines. There seems to be a general lack of respect for the facility by the users and the floor goes largely unsupervised, which does not help. If you come here, get used to waiting and "how many sets you got left".

Good gym. Broken equipment is fixed quickly. Beautiful view from the cardio machines upstairs. Usually busy but everyone is pretty courteous. Makes it easy to work out.
EDIT: A few issues have made me lower my rating.
- The windows are closed and TVs turned off 30 minutes before close. Why? A lot of people are still in the gym at that time and it gets stuffy quickly.
- Equipment seems rundown lately. Many of the treadmills and ellipticals creak constantly.
- The hours keep changing (shrinking) but the price (at least for community members) doesn't change in response. Classic UCSC.

Itβs my first time attending and they are aware of it. They made me feel embarrassed by letting me know first instead of after I was done with my workout about their no midriff policy because of hygienic reasons. So NO SHOWING OFF CUTE SPORT bras.
The space is small, but has multiple little buildings for weight training, dance studio, racket ball rooms, only one full indoor basketball. Many Large tennis court and a decent standard swimming pool.
So overal facility is on the smaller side, staff are friendly but not considerate (naive) of peoples/customers first impression. Probably wonβt be going here unless I really want to swim. πββοΈ π€

Beautiful views. Usually overcrowded all through the day. Ameturish undergrads hog the machines and specially the weight racks. Some of the ways people swing or drop the weights are down right dangerous. The more novice the user the less respect they have for the fellow users of the facility. The strange thing is, the floors are not monitored with eyes for health and safety issues. During the busy hours acquiring a locker space might be an issue. There's no change or locker room and you can not take a shower. Only 2 bathrooms downstairs that are always already occupied.

Overall pretty swell experience. Just one down side is when it gets crowded it gets really hard to find machines to use. I wish that OPERS was bigger that way everyone can get a machine they want and not have to stand around waiting to take turns or until a person if finished with their reps.
