If you’re looking for a gym to work on your fitness goals and have a super supportive, fun community around you, this is the place to go! The variety of classes here is phenomenal. I have taken CrossFit, boxing, Pilates, yoga and weight training classes here - all from super knowledgeable and welcoming coaches. I was a complete beginner to boxing and feel that I have learned from the best in a very reassuring environment. As an experienced crossfitter, I’ve been able to fine-tune my technique and continue to reach new goals and PRs. This place is also so much more than a gym; it’s a community space where members make every new person that walks in feel so comfortable and empowered.

I'm old school, so I remember that old TV show "CHEERS", where the theme song is "where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came". That theme song slaps.
Which leads me to my point, Backyard fitness/boxing isnt just a place where you work out (even though the workouts are top notch). It's a gym where everyone smiles when they greet you, where the owners and coaches are warm, sincere, and passionate, where they make you feel like home even though they're kicking your ass for the whole hour you're there. Its a gym that is inclusive, where you feel safe no matter who you are. it's basically the "CHEERS" of gyms.
I mainly take boxing and I love every class, shout out to the coaches song playlists though. Jeneta with her old school hits, Alinda with her dope remixes, and Denny with the Kpop Demon Hunters soundtrack.
Come and check the gym out for yourself though, you wont be disappointed, I promise you...

I absolutely loved my previous boxing gym but had to switch after moving to the eastside...& man, I am so grateful to have found a new home/community at Backyard. All the coaches are highly-skilled, encouraging, & able to adapt to any background in mixed-level classes.
Recently, I started going to the non-boxing classes (glutes, core/pilates) as well & feel that I am getting a really well-rounded routine, adding in more strength training.
Everyone is so friendly & it's truly an inclusive space; you'll see folks of all fitness levels, body types, and gender identities/expressions here!

BEST trainers and community - Backyard has a super inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. Trainers are also really knowledgeable and will meet each attendee with where they’re at. If there’s interest or curiosity for any of the classes, HIGHLY recommend giving them a shot. I love Jeneta and Alinda for boxing!!!

Joining Backyard Crossfit gym has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for both my physical and mental health. The workouts challenge me in all the right ways, but what makes this place truly special is the community. It’s such an inclusive and diverse space where everyone is welcomed and supported, no matter where they’re starting from. The coaches genuinely care and push you to be your best, but always in a way that feels encouraging, never intimidating.
Since joining, I’ve noticed not only how much stronger I’ve gotten physically, but also how much better I feel mentally. Backyard has become a safe space for me—a place where I can let go of stress, clear my mind, and leave feeling uplifted. The energy here is so positive and motivating, and it’s given me a sense of belonging that I really needed. This gym is more than a place to work out—it’s a community that has truly helped me grow inside and out.
P.S. My doggy loves coming too

Sooooo... I drank the Crossfit Kool-aid. After years of watching my husband practice this crazy sport, I finally gave in.
I am not now, nor have I ever been a sporty person. I started coming to Mixtape for their yoga classes. Loved it. I then moved on to spin classes. Yes! I can do this. Now I'm doing the crazy WOD (Workout of the Day). I'm actually doing things in the gym I would have never thought I could do.
The coaches are without exception knowledgeable,
approachable, and encouraging. They modify and accomodate the workouts to your level of fitness. The facility is not like a typical chain gym, but it is clean and welcoming. But the NUMBER ONE REASON why I keep coming back is the sense of community that Coaches Sadie and Jason have fostered in their business. The inclusivity and comaraderie and overall lovefest I feel here are everything. Having a cruddy day at work? Come to the box. Relationship woes? Come to the box. Too many tamales? Come to the box. You'll sweat. You'll laugh. You'll feel better. Did I mention this is a dog-friendly spot? Seriosuly... come this box!!!

Mixtape is such a beautiful place. I’m not a traditional CrossFit body, but the coaches at Mixtape meet you where you are and preach Functional Fitness. Whether you want to get into the best shape of your life, or simply maintain your body and keep yourself strong as you age, Mixtape is place for you. Couldn’t recommend this place more highly to anyone - whether you’re just starting your fitness journey, or you’ve been a CrossFit athlete for years.

Love the energy of the gym, love the laid back community vibe in contrast to the intense workouts! Sadie is an excellent teacher and taught me olympic weightlifting which I've always wanted to learn and found her approach very accessible. Recommend if you're a pro or you're gym-shy and don't know where to start!

What started as just looking for supplemental strength training became a physical journey that is a defining part of my everyday life. Mixtape is responsible for such much of my physical and mental progress and I can’t thank Coach Sadie and Coach Jason enough for all their guidance and encouragement. As I always tell everyone who asks, this is the best gym I’ve ever had the good fortune to be a part of.

I’ve never imagined myself being a gym girlie, yet here I am and it is truly a testament to the phenomenal coaches and members at Mixtape.
Each coach is knowledgeable and passionate in their skills and lead through encouragement and support. They push you to reach your personal best, wherever that may be, never any judgment. They’ve cultivated such a welcoming and inclusive environment in a setting that can often times feel intimidating. The members are also super friendly and motivating, making each workout that much more enjoyable.
The genuine sense of community is second to none. Please give it a try, you deserve it!

I've been here for about two years, and I can confidently say this place is different, in all the best ways possible. The coaches are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. They always push you to reach your personal best while providing personalized attention. They genuinely care about your progress and well-being. Whether you’re a beginner or competition level, the programming ensures sustained progress and keeps things fresh.
The variety of classes allows you to explore different workouts and styles—there's something for everyone. The vibes are immaculate, making the days when showing is hard that much better.
There's a sense of camaraderie that's hard to find. If you’re looking for a gym that will quickly become one the best parts of your day and will look forward to walking into, Mixtape Athletics is the one.

I love this gym! My husband and I were living in the Arts District and we needed a new gym. Our first day there, we knew this place was for us. Coach Sadie and Coach Jason were so welcoming, down to earth and incredibly knowledgeable and patient as we stepped into the CrossFit world for the first time. Over our years there, we not only gained strength and flexibility in our bodies, but gained a great community of people in our lives. From holiday and birthday celebrations to farewell parties, this community shows up for each other. If that is something you are searching for in Los Angeles, I guarantee you will find it here!

Not typically someone who exercises in a gym setting so I was a little intimidated when my coworker invited me to workout at Mixtape. My experience there was nothing but welcoming and the instructors and regulars there were so nice and encouraging! Really awesome queer-owned space to work out.

If you're looking for more than just a gym and want to find a true fitness family, your search ends here. Before Mixtape, I wasn’t a gym girly—let alone a CrossFitter—but now, I can proudly call myself a CrossFit athlete (and bad bish). I have never felt more at home in a community than I do at Mixtape. After moving to LA, I joined Mixtape because it was the closest gym to my apartment, and it turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made. We all know going to the gym can be intimidating but the coaches are incredibly supportive, teaching me proper lifting techniques without any judgment, even as a complete beginner. The facility is spotless, and the equipment is always well-maintained. But above all, the welcoming, inclusive community at Mixtape is what truly sets it apart. When I tell you Mixtape changed my life I am not lying. This gym is a gem. I promise you, you're making the right decision!

This gym LOVES fitness. They have gone above and beyond to make fitness accessible to what their members needs are.
Not only are they adding classes in response to the field, but they even have coaches that use sign language which I’d never even considered being a valuable need before.
Folks in the gym are also incredibly welcoming and supportive, making all of us at all levels feel comfortable trying hard things where we are at and giving the supports to strengthen ourselves from there.

I started with mixtape boxing in 2022 after a serious knee injury that required multiple and just being cleared to run again. Alinda, the head boxing coach, is a big reason why this place is amazing. She not only has USA boxing experience, but she can cater to any injury all while making sure you are learning correct techniques and burning calories. Whether you are new to boxing or a vet, this is where you want to go in the arts district. They also offer CrossFit, Spin, and Yoga! Above all else, coach Sadie and coach Jason have created an inclusive space with a great community!

I'm writing this review at the gym's request, which I could not be happier to comply with. I had never done CrossFit before starting at Mixtape one year ago, and it has sincerely been life-changing! Workouts are super customizable, so you can jump in wherever you're at. Coaches are *all* knowledgeable and supportive, and, fwiw and at the time I write this, almost exclusively women. The community is incredible - not douchey, not intimidating. And there are tons of cute dogs. If you're even mildly interested, try this fantastic gym

Overall good classes that make you work hard, but they often start 10min late, which meant I had to leave early to make it to work on time. The bathrooms are gross for paying $200/month. Kanye West plays on a loop every single day for months on end. And the kicker, when I decided one day to push myself with a slightly more advanced exercise, an in-shape classmate and the *the instructor* rolled her eyes behind my back. Easy way to insult and lose a customer.

I've been Crossfiting for the past 10 years and Mixtape has been by far has been the best!! What sets mixtape from all the other Crossfit boxes is 1. The coaches 2. The hours for open gym Monday to Friday 3. The community and the vibe!! 4. This is the only place where I can set my wallet and cell phone and not worry about it!! Sadie and Jason ( the owners ) have the best outlook in life and it shows when they coach and just sit down for a chat... If you want a place to train and just get healthy come to mixtape...

Dopest CrossFit gym in Downtown LA. Was in town for the week and found this little hidden gem while in the area. The environment was very laid back and chill. Came during open gym time and they welcomed me with open arms! Felt like I was back at my box in my hometown. If your in the downtown area and looking for a box to go don’t hesitate to go here! You will absolutely love it. I will defiantly be back. Thank y’all so much for the hospitality! ♥️

They are very knowledgeable and passionate. I am always looking forward to the different workouts. Sadie, Jason, and Scott are all helpful! The workouts are never boring and keep me engaged!

I started going to Mixtape in February of 2022. Knowing I was going to be moving in June I was reluctant to get into a new box only to leave in a few months.
In the short amount of time I was there I connected with Mercedes and Jason and they were absolutely amazing. They care so much about their members and go above and beyond to create a welcoming environment for everyone.
I moved in June of 2022 and tried out three other CrossFit boxes in the Santa Monica area only to find out that I’m a Mixtape-er for life. I missed the WIN and FIT workouts that included modifications to some of the more advanced movements, I missed the open gym environment with TONS of room to workout, I missed the doggies, I missed the one on one coaching you get during class, but most importantly I missed the culture that Mercedes and Jason have cultivated with this new CrossFit box.
I recommend this CrossFit box over any of the other ones in Los Angeles simply because Mercedes and Jason. They’re an amazing duo and have created an even more amazing CrossFit culture that is inviting and welcoming to all who have a passion for fitness.
Definitely worth the drive everyday to spend time with my gym family.

MixTape is truly a fantastic spot if you are looking to get back into shape and reconnect with friendly folks after the last two years of being inside.
I started in late September and this gym welcomed me with open arms. I was the heaviest I’d ever weighed and felt really disconnected from my body. I saw Mixtape on my Instagram, and though I was terrified of CrossFit, I saw they were an inclusive gym (I’m LGBT and was worried there was not a place for me in CrossFit) and they offered yoga which interested me. One class with Jason made me realize their inclusive message was the real deal. It was all about starting me at where I was at and making me feel comfortable. By my second class on Saturday with Sadie I was hooked. These two create a phenomenal environment.
The workouts have scaled versions of intensity which allowed me to keep going despite being new to CrossFit and keep me engaged. I’ve lost over 30 pounds since joining the gym, but the real reason I stay is the community. Jason and Sadie run an incredibly welcoming business that is only enhanced by the incredible community they are building. Their additional coaches are all equally kind, knowledgeable, and make working out fun. I’ve yet to try there boxing classes but I hear amazing things. I’ve already made incredible friends there, and often it feels just as much a social club as it is a gym. Looking forward to staying at the place for a long time.

I've been a member of many CrossFit boxes and will tell you that Mixtape is easily the best run gym out of the list. The space is clean, the decor is stylish and the gym is well equipped. What really sets them apart is coaching and how accommodating and welcoming the owners are to beginners. They patiently explain all of the exercises to new athletes and offer easy scaling options if needed. The community has grown strong here as a result. I would highly recommend regardless of experience level.

This place is great! The coaches are all friendly and welcoming. The coaches break down these complicated exercises and help you every step of the way. The community they’ve cultivated is phenomenal! As a person who steered clear from big box gyms, I’m so glad I found this place! While the classes might get busy, you never feel out of place or unwelcome here. Check out the yoga class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, you’ll surprise yourself with how quickly you become more flexible!
