I have been going to Barry’s Burlingame since Feb 2023. I take 12 classes a month, costing me nearly $300 every month. It was a great environment but they’ve had some changes with management recently. I have been satisfied and looked forward to going to class 3 times a week up until the past couple of weeks.
My first problem I encountered was when they had their summer merch sale of 40% off the entire store. I wanted to get this Alo set. I was able to get the bottoms no problem but regarding the top, the front desk said that they were unable to process the sale so that she would talk to the client operations supervisor and that the problem would be solved. Long story short, I was passed off from the client operations supervisor to the studio manager multiple times for 2 weeks and they kept saying that they would hold it for me and that they’d honor the sale. 2 weeks later, the new studio manager told me none of the codes were working and then she asked me if I still wanted it full price? Like why drag it on for 2 weeks?
Now onto the next problem I’ve encountered which led me to write this review. I got an email from them saying I am the June United We Barry’s challenge raffle winner of a massage gift card on July 9 and the same new studio manager would be the one to reach out to me to email the gift card. It is now July 19 and I have emailed multiple times and asked in person for an update. In our email thread they kept saying “you should get it by this day…” and I follow up and they give me another day. ‘TIL this day, still no gift card. I would’ve been better off and not upset if I didn’t get an email nearly 2 weeks ago saying I’ve won. Now that this gift card is being withheld from me, I am quite upset. No one is able to provide me answers. No one has taken accountability for this issue or apologized for the inconvenience. I expected better from a company that’s so pristine and costly of $300 for 12 classes a month. As a loyal paying customer, I had hoped to be accommodated and treated much better than this.
I am giving two stars instead of one because I was happy with this studio for the past 2 years up until these recent events.

Emma’s classes are always on point—her music, energy, and drive push you to your limits in the best way. She takes the time to explain movements and proper form, and she holds you accountable every step of the way. Absolutely worth every penny. Hands down, one of the best instructors I’ve ever had

Matt was super clear with his instructions and kept a close eye on all of the students. He made the class fun and interesting the whole time. I was amazed at how he was simultaneously teaching different students while DJ-ing the room. I really appreciated the thoughtful introduction he gave me before the class. As a newcomer, my worries were put at ease by knowing what to expect in the class. Thanks, Matt!

Great workout and parking across the street. The front desk was very sweet when I requested a different position for class. The locker rooms are a bit small but they are clean and filled with amenities, showers and bathrooms. The workouts are very fast paced and can be difficult to keep up with if you are new or need any modifications. Very nice location altogether.

A Barry’s Con Story
I’ve been a member since 2019 and have taken over 250 classes. As an avid Barry’s fan, I’ve even taken classes in various cities across the country.
I was swindled out of classes and money when an employee approached me to purchase classes through him, presenting it as a special promotion. I was made to feel like a fool when Barry’s removed the classes from my account. After trying to get my money back from the terminated employee, I approached Barry’s, noting that this person was an employee during the transaction. Barry’s denied my requests and further made me feel like a fool. I provided evidence showing that I was unaware the employee hired by Barry’s was a thief. How was I to understand the logistics of a promotion offered by an employee of the organization?
Michael LaMasa was the one in communication with me and insinuated that Barry’s is unable to help me and take accountability for the people that they hire. It’s a very unfortunate situation that I wanted to bring to light so that this does not happen to any other Barry’s lover and goer.

I love Barry’s, my sister introduced me and ever since then, have been hooked! My fave instructor to take & the one I look to book with is Peter on Sundays because 1) he’s such a sweetheart and remembers people by their names 2) his playlist is always 🔥 (yes, I’ve gone out my way to tell him that too) - def makes me want to twerk-it-out each class

One of a kind. There is no other like him. His class just hits in all the ways. Music that lights your soul, programming that crushes your body but you keep coming back for more. He’ll push you to the edge, never past it, because he knows you got that covered on your own. It’s hard to take a basic Barry’s class after having taken Matt’s because you develop less of a tolerance for mediocrity.

The workout here is challenging, but absolutely do able. Modifications are always given, allowed and accepted by the instructor without judgement. But in all honesty, 50% of me comes for the killer workout and the other 50% for the community. The instructors are amazingly kind, motivating and personal. Same with everyone that works at the front desk. They welcome you by name and always have smiles and seem to enjoy being there. I would suggest to anyone who is thinking about coming, to try it out.

This is a legit, high-intensity workout focused around a pair of treadmill/weight movement sessions. You can't avoid dripping with sweat and feeling good afterwards that you completed a hard workout. My favorite part has got to be the blaring music and how the ups/downs in energy are tied to peaks and valleys in the workout, definitely something that's hard to replicate in a home workout.

Unsurprised to see other reviews saying they gave people’s confirmed spots away, because the same happened to my friend and me. The front desk’s explanation for giving away the spot when we were on time for check in didn’t make any sense.

Way over hyped. We were late and still charged the first class $35 each person for all 3 of our first time on New Years day :( Go to Basecamp Burlingame just down the street! They give you a first free class unlike Barry's and they are friendlier! Plus it's a similar workout back and forth from weights/core/to cardio but Basecamp has assault bikes besides treadmills and the abs are focused on intensely at the end at Basecamp. Basecamp also has TV's you can follow along with the movement clearly at the same time the trainer leads you unlike Barry's with no TV's with the movements and only the trainer leading.

I did four classes at Barry's and loved them. Three of these were over 3 consecutive days. Perhaps what I learned can help you decide if Barry's is for you (each pro has a connected con):
Pros:
-I hate running but, for some reason, Barry's made it fun.
-Barry's workouts are intense, high energy, and you can't help but push yourself. If you struggle to get a good workout in by yourself you may benefit from this change of pace as I did.
-The coaches are accommodating, friendly, and professional.
-Barry's shakes are excellent and it's such a treat to have one waiting for you post-workout.
-The staff is just wonderful. They're positive, helpful, and encouraging.
Cons:
-There's no escape from running unless you do "double floor" which is brutal. It would be awesome if they incorporated bikes or rowing machines. However, I imagine that would be pure chaos with the current model.
-If you're getting back in to shape like I was; It's really easy to go all out and need two days to recover. It's hard to hold back enough that you're ready to come back the next day. Also, Barry's workout are LOUD. I highly recommend using the earplugs they provide.
-You often end up playing a game of "exercise telephone" as you watch your neighbor who's watching their neighbor watch the coach. This can leave some people confused as to what exactly they're supposed to be doing and how. Stand close to the coach's station if you're like me and can't see that well.
-The shakes can stack up and add an extra $10-14 per workout if you're not careful.
-The way sessions are priced leaves you paying nearly three times as much as other gyms if you work out every day. It's essentially the opposite of a flat rate gym membership by having you pay per session instead of per month.
I hope that's helpful. I loved my workouts and look forward to poking my head in from time to time for one heck of a workout. Thanks Barry's!

This is my first experience with workout bootcamps which are dime a dozen around the area. I was not happy with my gym (gyms, actually) memberships as I switched from 3 different gyms within the last 3 months. I was considering going to Equinox until one Monday night I randomly stopped by Barry's and even though they were closed a nice guy (now I know his name is Ryan and he's great) gave us a tour and I realized I was sold right away. I am so happy to be their customer.
They are super friendly, the place is nice, their shower/body products smell like heaven, they have their own smoothie bar, but the main part is workouts (of course). Those are absolutely great. And, in contrast to Orange Theory they have this "double floor" option when you can stay on the floor all hour and only do weights (which I love since I'm not big on running).
My fav coach is Matt, his workouts are very well structured and his explanations are super clear, you know exactly what and when you supposed to switch to the next exercise, I never feel lost and confused. He also constantly cheering everybody up so that even if you're super tired Matt is there for you to help go thru the struggle. Struggle of getting better.
Go Barry's!

UPDATE 3/24/19:
So... after my awful experience a few weeks ago, Lauren, the manager, reached out to me in a timely fashion to apologize for the poor customer service and treatment and invited me back to try a class for free. I was skeptical but given the great customer service I thought they deserved a second chance. I took class with Matt this morning and it was a great experience! Barry's is definitely the boutique gym experience, complete with eucalyptus cold towels and protein smoothies ordered at the bar. The workout itself is classic high intensity intervals, with half the time on a treadmill and the other half on the floor with weights and body weight exercises. The vibe was great and if you're someone who feeds off of others' energy in group classes, you'll LOVE Barry's. After 50 minutes I was drenched in sweat and I felt that I had an amazing workout that really challenged me at every turn! As an Orangetheory fanatic, I will say that I missed the rowing a bit, but Barry's is every bit as intense if not more than OTF.
I have to thank Lauren for reaching out and inviting me to come back to give Barry's a try, because it's a great workout and I had an awesome time today. It's definitely more pricey than OTF but you are paying for the boutique experience and it's worth every penny.

3/7/19 original review:
If I could give the staff ZERO STARS I would do it! I signed up for my first class at 6 am. As an Orangetheory Fitness addict I was super excited to try Barry's out. I got to the studio 15 minutes early (note: 5:45 am) as they asked to check in and get oriented. The class started and I was at my station warming up and someone came up to me and told me I was at her station. I walked outside, confused, and the front told me they never checked me in and allowed someone who came in late to take the last spot.
So... not quite the first time experience I was hoping for. No amends were made and no call from the studio manager. I really hope they get their act together, but for now, it's back to Orangetheory for me. If you're looking for a good workout AND amazing customer service that makes you feel like family, check out Orangetheory instead.
