I previously had a disappointing experience at Bay Club Redwood Shores involving a lost Polar fitness watch and some confusion with the lost-and-found process. However, I want to update my review because the Club’s General Manager, James, handled the situation exceptionally well once it reached his attention.

James took the time to look into the matter, communicated with me personally, and approached everything with professionalism and genuine care. I truly appreciate the effort he put into addressing my concern and ensuring that steps are taken to improve the process in the future.

Thank you to James and the management team for taking responsibility and for the thoughtful gesture offered. I really appreciate it.

The Bay Club has gone through a major downgrade over the last year. I just ended my membership. They have changed a variety of their policies, but the straw that broke the camel’s back is the poor communication between swim instructors and members. We are actually forfeiting 8 private lessons with our membership cancellation due to this. The cost of this club is too high for the staff to have such bad communication practices.

One of my favorite locations, I’ve been coming to this club in redwood shores since it was the pacific athletics club. It’s funny and cool how something’s never changed and some have changed in good ways. Great club !

Side note I do wish we could have a bay club in palo alto or mid peninsula area. Since I try to avoid 101 lol 🙏

Beware of the Bay Club’s unethical cancellation policy changes. On July 25, I submitted a request to cancel a membership effective July 31—only to learn they had secretly changed their policy to require 30-day notice.

Key issues:

No proper notice: They admit the change was only communicated via a newsletter (no email/letter), buried among trivial updates.

Retroactive charges: Despite canceling under the old policy, they charged me for August. Senior Director Ryan Ashbaker refused a refund, claiming it would be "unfair" to other members (but where’s the fairness in hiding policy changes?).

No accountability: They insist their "legal team approved" the notification method, but approval ≠ compliance with consumer laws.

The facilities here need to be much much better for the cost of membership. The showers all have broken handles so you can't control the water temp, the drains are usually full of hair, the steam room is always broken (even though they closed it for weeks to renovate it, it reopened looking and smelling the same), and everything is rusty and full of calcium build up. This location is always packed with people, hard to park at, and hard to book facilities for what you want. They charge an absurd amount for membership yet can't maintain decent basic faculties. They also have a ridiculous cancellation policy, requiring you to pay for months after deciding to leave. Just stay away.

Edit July 2025 - 11 months after the below review. The basketball hoop is STILL broken…the maintenance here is not good, and I’m finding myself more and more frustrated by the month. If you are reading this, please fix the basketball hoops, the YMCA has nicer hoops….

If you aren’t on a family plan, save your money and go to any other gym. I signed up last November and in 6 months they have raised rates twice by $20-25 per month per person, all while doing nothing to make this gym worth coming to. The basketball hoop has been broken here for months, so save $200 on a monthly membership and go to YMCA or any 24 hours fitness with working hoops and lockers that don’t have dead batteries. They opened some restaurant here instead of fixing the broken items and even took away the front parking spaces for it. If your justification is to do the larger plan to get all the gyms, save your time going to Santa Clara because it’s tiny, never has parking, and only has one of each type of machine or equipment

The pools are nice and the atmosphere is pleasant. The membership policies feel like a bait and switch.

When we joined we were supposed to accumulate guest passes, but had to wait 3 months for the first set. When trying to use them 5 months in, they said they changed the policy so that passes are only usable 4/12 months of the year, but we can pay them more money.

When considering whether to sign up, they used high pressure tactics offering to join video calls at weird hours to help us sign up.

Edit: decreased to 1 star since nothing has been done about the AC and my membership fees went up 10% 2 years in a row

I actually enjoy going to the bay club and the staff are all nice, however there's no AC or fans in the basketball court or the main fitness area which get really hot during the summer which makes it unbearable to exercise.
I reached out to at least 4 staff members some of which were managers about this and they never did anything about this or contacted me back. Every time I reached out they didn't know about the other complaints I've made so they obviously don't actually track them

My child took a coding class (Build a website) through Siliconvalley4u’s summer camp at Bay Club, and he had an amazing time! He looked forward to it every day and couldn’t stop talking about the cool projects he worked on. The children care facility is horrible. They couldn’t handle toddlers and keeps call you back every 15 mins. After two strikes, they forced you to take kids back. Also also, it’s impossible to book any weekend spots for child care when you want to have a bit time for yourself. Try it and you know I’m not joking or lying a bit. The customer service also remains much to improve. Please do not waste your money. I ended hiring my own coach.

We had a very bad experience with the club specially with childcare. I left my child 18 months old for like 20 min and they already called me saying he had puked. When I arrived he was crying and tied to a high chair with snot and vomit all over him. When I asked why he was in the high chair, they said he was running around and disturbing the kids. Come on he is a kid, he was excited to be there. He has always been well behaved. They just treated him as an inconvenience and did not bother to calm him down or clean him up when he has forcibly tied tot he chair. I complained about this to management about they did not do anything about it. I was appalled by the mistreatment of my child and we decided to pull our membership after waiting 2 months. I was very much disappointed by the management, will never recommend joining bay club.

They are trying really hard to sell their memberships and the sales guy was aggressive and rude.

I signed up for the kid tennis class for my daughter, which is a class available for non-members. When we got to the gym, the sales guy pretty much threatened us that if we were not members, our class will be cancelled for us next time. He talked a lot about the benefits of the members, etc., and I had to tell him to save his time because we don’t plan to sign up anytime soon. Then he told us to only stay on the tennis court and not to walk around because the club is “private”, not even for getting more water for my daughter. That day was 83 degree and we were having a tennis class at noon outdoors.

It was a very bad experience with this aggressive and rude sales guy, so just a heads up if you plan to try any of their activities or classes.

Updates:
Even though the Bay Club manager responded here stated that they wanted to talk and understand about the situation, it never happened. I emailed them and gave my availabilities, but no responses afterwards.

The staff at Bay Club Redwood Shores are always polite and welcoming. Every time I arrive at the club, I’m greeted, often by name, and when I leave, I’m always sent off with a farewell.

As a long-time member, I can confidently say I’ve never experienced anything less than exceptional courtesy and friendliness from the staff. Even when faced with challenging situations or demanding members, they handle everything with patience, respect, and a sincere commitment to resolving issues promptly.

While this might seem like a small detail, it isn't — it makes an enormous difference. Their positivity creates a welcoming atmosphere that sets the tone for every visit.

It’s easy to overlook just how remarkable their attitude is, but we shouldn’t take it for granted — it’s worth celebrating. And, I hope, rewarding.

Friendly environment. But the facility is really outdated. They're finally modernizing the building but the equipment is really old, frequently broken, and the staff doesn't seem to know how to take care of it. All the treadmills on the lower level in the lifting area have some sort of defect. I used to be a rower and all of the rowing machines on the lower level are broken. I used a rowing machine in the Ignite room and one day it wouldn't turn on and they assumed it was broken but I knew it just meant the batteries were dead. They somehow didn't know that the machine required 2 D batteries?? I've been to other Bay Clubs down in LA and they all seem to be kept up better. Secretly hoping that Lifetime comes to the Penninsula. Right now, there really isn't another gym in the area that can compete with what this Bay Club has to offer and they've seemed to be resting on that fact for many many years now.

I applied for membership when Covid started happening, but back then I didn’t realize that it had such a huge social impact. It actually affected my work and I had to cancel my membership soon after the application.

Since I NEVER used the facility and it was right after I joined, I asked for a full refund of my initiation fee, but the membership rep at the time was very unsympathetic, and was adamant that I could not get a refund.

I recently asked for a refund or any possible arrangement again, same situation. The new membership rep Maria Agostinelli continued to be unsympathetic and not accommodating. I felt like I communicated with a chatbot, not a real human.

I know that contractually they may not be obligated to refund. However, I am not sure how they can be so ruthless in their response.

If you are in need of a pool and/or pay for the tennis membership then I would join. Otherwise, as a gym, it is a poor experience. Class volume is thin enough that you will need to go to whatever class is available at the time you can go to the gym. The classes are very disruptive as the instructors allow and encourage people to put their equipment away all throughout the class. Additionally, you can not pause your membership and even if the person who sells you the membership tells you that pickleball and pilates are included they are in fact not included (along with the fact that at this location pilates classes aren't even happening and pickleball was canceled for the duration of the summer). As far as I can tell Bay Club is a money extraction machine.

I've been a Bay Club Redwood Shores member for over ten years. I used to consider the gym high-end and exclusive and I recommended it to friends and colleagues. However, recently it embarked upon a scammy new pricing structure where you can either pay what I call the suckers-price directly (prohibitively expensive membership fee), or you can resign yourself to suffer the indignity of either having to recruit family, friends, relatives and neighbors to align into some kind of Amway-style monthly fee they try to benignly call 'group' or 'shared' membership, where you have to collaborate and negotiate with your 'group' to pay a single fee per month. Alternatively you can try to band together with a group of strangers to pay the nebulous monthly fee, which naturally exposes you to people who fail to pay or want to drop membership for a period and all other manner of hassles and friction. Everyone I know pays a different fee. Imagine if you had to band together with strangers to pay your electricity bill, or your streaming subscriptions - so much uncivilized nonsense. Meanwhile they try to masquerade as an exclusive high-end gym?

They raised prices four times in two years and when I emailed them on the latest increase to ask what it was, they never responded - they never disclosed the increase (a friend who also complained said they told him they disclosed it on the tail end of one of they promotional videos); so unprofessional.

The key other gripe I have is that they never ever ask for feedback from their members. I go to a wine-tasting and I get an email the next day asking for feedback and allowing the business to track their Net Promoter Score (NPS), yet I've spent >$30k at the Bay Club and they never ask for feedback - it's likely that they would be too embarrassed to collect the results.

If you do point out concerns, they deflect blame, never addressing your concern directly.

I was told I couldn’t check out the gym or even buy a day pass because there weren’t any membership specialists working. Frustrating as I had called twice before heading up to make sure I could check things out, but nobody answered.

They need to empower front desk folks to take care of prospective members, or at least answer phones, especially at $500/mo for a membership.

Came to tour the gym and was met by an extremely rude tour specialist named Freddie.
Prior to my visit, I was asked to fill out a Calendly for when id like a complimentary day pass to try out the facility - Freddie gave me a half-arsed tour in shorter than 3 minutes and then promptly kicked me out citing various reasons why I couldn't use my day pass on my chosen day, such as "the gym was too full at peak hour".

I still wanted to see more, so his manager Michael came out to finish the tour for Freddie. He was much kinder, but he had no ideas as to why his staff behaved in such a way earlier.

There are various facilities and offerings at this location, but I was here at 4:30 pm on a Monday and it was PACKED (view photo). I think you'd need to wait a considerable amount of time for a squat rack, or a dumbbell bench for example. Can't imagine how bad it'd be at 6pm, felt similar to a planet fitness.

It took 10 min to find parking.

By the way, there are a few tennis courts here, but Michael informed me they will convert them to pickleball soon. Just a heads up to any actual tennis players.

I've been a loyal member of the Bay Club for years, specifically in the East Bay, and have always loved the community and the staff. Recently, I was in Redwood City and decided to check out the Redwood Shores location since I had never been there before.

I understand that some memberships do not cover multiple locations, which was the case with mine. However, I walked in hoping to get a day pass, which is usually an option. I wasn't asking for a freebie; I just wanted a quick workout and was considering adding this location to my membership.

The front staff were cordial but informed me that they needed to get upper management to handle my request. I then spoke to a "manager" who was a short guy with tattoo sleeves. He told me I needed to go through the "proper channels" and get my director to approve me to be on a list just to try the club.

Not only did they refuse to sell me a day pass or even allow me to try their location, but they also wanted me to jump through unnecessary hoops for a simple day pass. This experience was incredibly frustrating and has made me reconsider my membership altogether. The lack of flexibility and bureaucratic hassle for something so basic is unacceptable.

Parents do not be fooled into thinking daycare is accessible here. When you join, the sales associates lie and make it sound as if you can get your child in whenever you want for up to 2.5 hours at a time. In reality, to have any chance of getting maybe an hour slot for your child, you have to log in at midnight a week in advance and sign up. Even then it's very difficult to find a time. On the weekends, forget it. When we raised this issue, they told us they are working toward a solution, when in reality, they could not care less. They have very few spots, too few child care employees and way too many parents competing for spots. You are constantly competing with other members for childcare, which is absurd for $700/month. If you're joining thinking you'll be able to use daycare all the time so that you can work out, don't waste your money. On top of that, the facility is very dated.

I have been a member here since the pandemic. I chose it primarily for the pools. They are very clean and not too overcrowded, except on weekends. The gym is incredible, with every possible exercise equipment available. The wait for the machines is typically not too long. That’s a nice place to attend.
Nice people,
Nice employees,
Clean and smelling good.
Plenty of lockers, actually I’m not sure in the peak hours of will have enough, but I think so.
The only inconvenient situation, actually terrible experience was in the shower time… it burned me I can’t bring the water to the ideal temperature, hot as a hell OMG! So hot so hot so hot, I just realized when my athletic body 😆 was full of soap and shampoo and I can’t run to the other one. It was terrible, I think they own me a free eternal membership for this experience.
I used the boxing area, and outside pool…
By the way don’t use their boxing gloves, smell so bad… stinky feet. I was naive to use it.
They have accessories to swim and lots of towels. You don’t need to bring your towel.
There’s a free coffee and tea.
I got a Parking space easily, but I think it’s not that easy to park.
The pool was good, it’s good for training.
If you see the Indian guy (Native American kind) walking around say “Hi” to him, super fun guy. He use to walk around no t-shirt, barefoot… good soul guy!
I will try to afford a membership over there. I liked.

If I could I’d give them 0 star.
This review is overdue.
I’ve been wanting to write this but today I got encouraged to finally do it as I got to know a friend of mine had the same experience.
I felt ashamed because I told her to come to this place so our kids can come together as well.

Be aware:
They have no limit for people in the pools so there might have 100s in each pool at the time. Sometimes they give private classes during busy days/hours and the instructor keep asking us to keep away from half of the pool reserved for private lessons. And the other half is packed. Club is always over crowded specially during summer and they are always short in towels during this time.
You will always see dirt in the water and they never clean as they supposed to based on how busy the place can get.

Nevertheless, they are bunch of cheaters.
When Paul Yapp gave us the intro, he HE SAID: you can cancel membership at anytime. We emailed and called him for canceling our membership but got ignored. they charged us for extra 2 months. We kept emailing and calling and they were dismissive.
I thought it happened only to us. But today I was talking to my friend and same thing happened to her.
So please be aware of their scam.
Another thing,
My husband had an accident, and slipped while he stepped inside one of the pools.
The shallow pool, where there used to be a slide, the floor of this pool was green, dirty, slippery, so that’s why he slipped and fell on his back, almost hitting his head.
All the did was asking us where he fell not even saying sorry!
They barely clean the pool floor so be aware of that too.
It’s such a shame they charge people so high and maintenance is so poor.

The Club is what they call "putting lipstick on a pig". Sure you can update some of the equipment, but it's still falling apart. They used to serve oatmeal and coffee in the morning, now you're lucky to get Ice out of the machine. There is no cleaning company outside of the staff so the place is filthy. Over the last several years it's become so bad with rats running across my feet in 77 or dirt and spit on the floors and locker rooms. Saddest part was this club once put members first and now all that matters is $ and what little they can do to still get $600+ a month. I hope I can save someone from the window dressing yours they out on, it ain't what they selling and I found that out first hand.

We have been members for only a few months. This was the first big family visit to the pool area. We arrived around noon and there are a lot of pools but most are tied off for lap swimming.
Sadly it took almost 45 mins of hunting down for a seat and after we had found a couple seats there were no towels available. We had to wait about 20mins for a refill of the towel station. Pools were warm but slightly dirty with litter and bugs.
Food was cold at the food station with old dried hot dogs. We opted to order at the bar for more fresh cheeseburger which was excellent along with the tater tots.
At the end of the day we used the family showers to get the kids cleaned up and they were all full of huge piles of towels on the ground.
Gym facilities are nice but could use some cleaning and updating. Overall wished our first family experience was a bit better. We still have 8 months on our membership

Another Bay Club location that’s now become extremely crowded. You can expect courts to be booked up, classes full, pools to be clogged with swimmers, and lines at gym machines.

Equipments are old, very old. I am surprised people are even using such old cheap apartment quality Walmart grade equipments. One in the picture won’t sell more than $100 in Craigslist - so sad. If you guys don’t want to spend, may be we can do a fundraising event for new and high quality machines. This is a great place - please fix it.

There are always designated lap lanes, which is awesome. There are people doing annoying things in the sauna, like changing into a swimsuit, putting on lotion, even talking on a cell phone. Lack of sauna etiquette.

This was one of the worst gyms I’ve seen. For $300 a month it was laughable. Disgusting locker rooms and less than 15 treadmills, you will always be waiting for a spot. Not worth it at all, they have nothing on Lifetime

IF there was an option for 0 stars I would. This Club is not what it used to be. I understand change is inevitable, but all the wrong things are impacted. Instead of changing out the broken lockers, showers, dirty carpets, they change membership prices. None of this money is being invested into up keep & cleaning the club. The house keepers all fight with each other and there is no department manager overseeing housekeeping, its usually the kids at the front desk folding towels while managers sit behind the desk in that office eating (we can see them when you check in). The club is out of something every week, or something breaks or some group fitness class is canceled or moved. Its a shame how much this club has fallen apart. The PAC owners took care of the facility and its members, its nothing like that with these new Bay Club management and ownership. I am certain this will fall on deaf ears but if my review can save anyone the $ I highly suggest somewhere else to workout. The restaurant is filthy, there is no spa, you have to pay extra to use the tennis courts. What are you paying for? And to top it off, these new shared memberships allow someone to gain access without any screening. As a result all you hear and read about are thefts taking place. Shouldn't this be a safe club? Its not and clear to see there is nothing being done about it.

Club was spacious and relaxing until they moved all these different aerobic classes upstairs and a small area in the downstairs area. Upstairs they closed off half of the weight room so it is very cramped and too many people forced to workout next to each other.

Seems like they are turning the club into a YMCA group class + kids play center ..they just use any space they want and dismiss single gym go-ers that are trying to workout in a spaced out environment.

Very disappointed with the management and ownership of the club. I've been a member for many years and it's very sad to see how awful the entire facility has become. There are ants and rats in the kitchens and locker rooms. They continue to increase costs everywhere, including our member dues without updating anything in the club. Where is our money going and being spent? Looking in the staff parking lot It appears to be going into the pockets of the higher ups while members are left to deal with a club that is failing and falling apart more and more every day. No oversight of housekeeping so one day you might have a towel and other days you have to beg for one. Showers and locker rooms are filthy, hardly any cleaning done throughout the day by the housekeeping staff other than Maria. And to top it off the customer service, especially in the evening and from Neil Lloyd is appalling. It's become a very militant operation just checking in when going in the afternoon/evening .I highly recommend saving your money and joining a club where member experience and doing the right thing are present and a priority of the club. At this location and company, that is the farthest from the truth. Very sad what's happened to this place and bay club company as a whole.

And couldn't agree more with Daren regarding childcare. Several of my girlfriends have these same issues but nothing is being done about it like everything else wrong at the club. Matthew Stevens you should be cleaning house both literally and physically ASAP

Source: Google

Warning! The childcare is a great feature of this club and a big part of the reason we joined. However, it is almost impossible to book your children in. I have spoken to several parents who stay up until the midnight deadline and still have trouble getting their children in for a reasonable amount of time. They’ve clearly outsold the capacity. It is making us reconsider the high price we pay.

Otherwise the faculties are great and the pool is a big plus particularly in the summer.

Great club, very spacious and well laid out equipment. My only complaint is the basketball court, particularly recently.

They just throw kids in on the court at random times and kick who ever is playing off. Couldn’t there be a better spot for kids to run around and throw balls at each other?

The Bay Club is an oasis. You can do everything here. I like a good early tennis game then a swim. They've got great tennis courts, and two Olympic sized pools. Sometimes I meet my friends here for lunch before getting a massage. Go check it out and see what I'm talking about.

New member since 2021 dec. The gym and basketball court are great.

Two problems here:
Firstly, the close time is way too early in the evening, which might make sense during pandemic, but as life is back to normal, pls extend the evening hours at least 1 hour.

Secondly, the basketball is always rented during weekend evening. How can people play serious basketball here with half court( and even the un-rented half court filled with lots of kids)??

Update after half year experience:
Now the basketball court is available in every weekday evening, which is great and I don’t have to worry about evening plan anymore.

The only thing left is the closing time, which hasn’t changed back to the pre-pandemic schedule. Hopefully they can think about that since daily life is back to normal now.

Bay Club has a great environment to work out, swim, eat, and relax. It's also a great place to leave kids while adults can work and earn the membership for Bay Club. With all the events and activities offered here it is clear that they prioritize families as their main customer, so if you are a family of 3 or more then I would highly recommend. If not then just go to the regular gym, it will save you a lot of money.

This place no longer has customer service, nor does it have adequate member services reps (I.e. James Lent). He should be working at a Golds Gym, based on his tone. Bay Club Redwood Shores always run out of towels on the workout floors, how are you supposed to clean the equipment and prevent the spread of Covid? Anyhow, after being a member her for 15 years, I realized that all they want is as much money as you can give them. I'm sorry I came back.

Extensive salt water pools for lap swimming, racket sports, and basketball are some of the outstanding features of this family friendly version of Bay Club in the peninsula. Friendly staff, fairly well maintained locker room, featuring sauna and steam room. Not too crowded even when its crowded and you end up parking almost in the next plaza.

This is a review of the customer service and not a reflection of the club amenities. The response time was within 10 minutes when inquiring about signing up for membership. However, once I've signed up as a member, I receive no replies to the emails I sent to customer service. Calls were forwarded to automated recording asking to contact through their website yet those emails aren't returned. I've been in other clubs and this one, by far, has the worst customer service.

Excellent, spacious grounds with lots of activities and helpful staff. The grounds themselves are very outdated. Paint peeling, stains on the carpets and walls. Holes in the ceiling. Looks 30 years past due for a renovation. The average age here is mid 40’s. Kids running around without supervision, which is fine. Overall the style and cleanliness was sub par. In terms of substance, there is a lot! So many amenities. Lots of space. In terms of form? Lacking stupendously. No taste. No style. Run like a YMCA, but more run down. The Santa Clara location showcases what it could be.

It's Okay. I would need more time to venture around the place but as far as first impressions go it's just OK. I gave them 4 stars because I know coming out of covid must be hard but they definitely need to run a tighter ship when it comes to cleanliness. The place is very old and that accounts for some of the disrepair. I'm just thinking for the membership cost they could do much better. I will go back and I will adjust my review as I see fit but I think it is a tough gig trying to keep up with the San Francisco Bay Club. The employees were cordial and helpful which is always a plus.
