As a first timer, I was quite apprehensive to start bouldering, but I wanted to give it a good shot. I’m so glad I tried Benchmark because I don’t think I could’ve found a more welcoming and friendly gym. Linda, Austin, and the rest of the staff taught me the ropes (or lack thereof haha!) and within my first session I climbed to the top already. The gym is very clean overall, as well as the lockers and bathrooms. They also change the routes frequently to keep everything fresh. Highly recommended!

I really wish they open earlier so I can go before work. Work hours might not be busy but I can’t go at that time probably the same issue with a lot of people. Please open earlier 🙏🏽

The problems here seem more difficult than Dogpatch boulders probaly because there are less options and the space is smaller, There aren’t as many facilities here which isn’t the best. Hence I gave it less stars. It feels congested and everything is very close together. I also don’t love their hours because I can’t go before work and after work it’s kinda crowded.
Dogpatch is still my favorite.

Great bouldering gym. It is relatively small compared to other gyms like Movement, but since it’s only bouldering, there are plenty of routes and the place is wayyyy cleaner than the Movement location by the Golden Gate Bridge. It gets decently busy on weekday evenings, but unlike many other gyms, there are almost no kids running around and skipping rotations, so even when it is busy, everyone can cycle through and try the boulders they’d like to without being cut off every time. I highly recommend this gym if you are looking to climb in SF.

Great climbing gym in the middle of the city. There's plenty of space, both on the wall but also around the bouldering mattresses, there's a small gym + exercise machine and a shower the staff is very friendly and the set has a good difficulty progression. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the steep entry price ($30 for a day pass) especially if you're not a local

A fantastic space for bouldering. Nice chill vibes, and just so welcoming, even as an out-of-towner.

The walls themselves are quite big so plenty of routes to try. I would say that the initial difficulty curve for beginners is a bit steep (
Absolutely worth your time if one wants to keep their fitness and/or climbing skills sharp while away on travel like I was, but also if one is local and wants to add something to their routine. The welcoming environment that has enough stuff to keep one hanging around (boardgames!). Very LGBTQ friendly space too. Highly recommended.

Beautiful new clean rock climbing gym. They have some free weights and a squat rack as well. They have bouldering routes for all levels. They also rent climbing shoes and chalk. There is a small store to buy rock climbing gear. The staff is super nice too! GREAT MUSIC.

The air can be pretty chaulky, but otherwise this place is top notch.

They have showers and towel service as well. They also have lockers for day use if you want. There are a ton of cubbies for easy storage as well

As a visitor, I thought the gym was well set and had nice problems.

I went during a Friday afternoon and there was basically nobody there. A lot of the climbs are overhung, but I thought there weren't many slab problems.

A bit on the softer side, but still generally within a good range of difficulty.

Solid climbing gym with a decent selection of routes. Boulders were fun although with a little bit less creativity in route setting than the best gyms I've been to. Matts felt a bit hard. Those are all minor nit-picky things in an other wise really nice gym. Great vibe, friendly climbers and a helpful staff made for a really pleasant experience.

Great gym for someone just getting started. The easy routes help you learn techniques and it’s a very welcoming, laid back vibe. Very clean too. The exercise bikes are fancy but don’t perform well, especially when riding hard. Also the changing room cleaning process could be improve- one guy closes them both for 20-30 min every day at prime hour.

Update: I’ve stopped my membership because the prices are just so high. If you’re not going 8+ times a month, you are wasting money. And single visits cost $35!!! Very, very expensive hobby

One of the best indoor climbing gyms in the bay if not the world. Super friendly staff very helpful and they have a very deep knowledge of climbing. Nice adult atmosphere ( as much as I like kids it’s nice to have a less of them environment). All the people that attend the gym all cool , haven’t run into one pretentious a-hole yet there. Give it a chance and it’ll probably become your new home gym . Only thing they could do is install some coat hooks ,And maybe have some member nights where they do giveaways and meet and greets.

Love Benchmark at first visit today :) it is closer than Dogpatch (from downtown). Problems are interesting (v4+) - more cave than slab problems.

The vibe is prob the best part, super chill. Reminds me of the Seattle Project - Fremont location. The gym is not big but feels airy and not crowded, no screaming/running children (!!!) on a Sunday morning (10a - 1p).

Music is good, people are friendly. I feel bad for the lone person working here on this particular Sunday - it is a lot with people coming in / out and managing the whole 10,000 sqft space. THANK YOU ❤️

Pricing is comparable to any other city gym, cheaper than NYC.

One pet-peeve: would be nice if they can open early, say 8a if not earlier.

I will be back next time in town, which is monthly lol

$30 day pass. Forced to show DL to prove you're not using a fake name. (?) Staff doesn't give you any information/basic tour and wasn't friendly in my visit even when it wasn't busy. Apparently there is beer but its always out from what I hear. Was out when I went. Setting was mostly fun and seems neither stiff nor soft except on one occasion where a v6 felt like their v3. Everyone avoids each other and isn't friendly/in their own little world but that may be a complaint more about the people in the city rather than the gym. Quite clean and nice bathrooms.

Challenging and fun for a calm family outing or should I say inning.who has enough upper body & arm strength to get to the top? The best thing about climbing here is that the drop is too far and you'll pretty much always hit a soft landing. Even if it's not feet first. Get your practice in before you hit the real nature climbing challenges.

Super helpful staff! Lots of space to work with and has a little nook in the back right for more roof oriented climbs, Moonboard, and training equipment! Weights are in the back left corner and you literally need to climb a ladder to get to. Lots of couches to do work if needed or to just chill and hang.

Bathroom has one shower for the men, not sure about women, but my guess is there's another shower in there. Towels are provided and there is some soap that is provided too.

Climbs are on the easier side compared to previous gyms I've been to, but as always, climbing by grades is subjective to style and other factors!

If you've got time super dope gym to check out! Day pass when I went was 32 dollars, sadly no student discount for those whom are. Not sure about memberships.

Starting from the friendly faces in the front to such a fine clean interior design to cool refreshments ..But the best part of it is how very friendly and educating some of the staff is . As someone who is clearly not an avid climber one of the girls- Linda was so nice and guided us throughevery step from beghiner level showed us tricks and encourage us! Didn't get a chance to take shot of the changing rooms , but they have showers and changing rooms lockers separtae bathrooms/ gender neutral ! there is also a gym !!the best part is that we got confused refreshments 😁 at the end of the climbing and we got to hangout and play board games . I’ve been an avid climber for well over a decade, routesetter for half of that time. I’ve routeset at 3 different major gym chains in the US. Benchmark has some of the highest caliber setting from v0-vHard of any gym I’ve ever worked for or climbed in. There’s engaging and flowy movement at any level (the feet and hands are height inclusive, and intuitive) and I find myself enjoying warmup climbs as much as “projects”. They’ve got a fantastic hold selection as well. It’s obvious that the minds behind the creation and execution of this gym, from wall angles, to routesetting and atmosphere, are talented, dedicated, and experienced climbers. It’s a climber’s climbing gym.

Though I have a great appreciation for them, the other local competitors offer a huge quantity at comparatively much lower quality. It’s obvious that they’ve got a lot to set, and do not dedicate as much time to each route that goes up. I have more to climb that’s interesting and fun at Benchmark than competing gyms with 10x the routes. Beyond the setting, the gym is run by a warm, inclusive crew and offer programs to help underprivileged and hard-and-out individuals have access to the gym at subsidized rates—something their successful competitors very surprisingly do not.

All-around, very impressed with what they’re doing and encourage local Bay Area climbers to come check it out. You will not be disappointed.
