The best strength and cardio classes around! I’m an ex-Orange Theory member and always wanted to know how to truly lift weights and get stronger. BFT took my strength to the next level. I recently trained for a half marathon and used BFT for cross training. Best feeling to be injury free and minimally sore after months of training and getting my body in the best shape I’ve been in since 2016.

I’ve been going to BFT since they first opened in Oakland and it is easily the best group fitness option on the market. The programming is excellent, utilizing progressive blocks that alternate between strength and cardio. You get use equipment that you wouldn't normally use in group fitness classes like barbells and plates rather than just dumbbells and cardio machines. Only thing I would prefer is if the schedule leaned even heavier into strength days compared to cardio.

BFT is exactly what I was looking for! I have always struggled to get consistent in the gym while also not really knowing what to do in the gym lol. BFT made it easy. All I have to do is show up and they have a different routine prepared. Each that has a specific purpose every single class without repeats to increase growth and avoid fitness plateaus. I also love the environment here. The Coaches do such a great job making everyone feel welcomed and keeping you encouraged to come back and get stronger. I am someone who is somewhat injury prone and have horrible form. BFT has really helped me not only improve my form but avoid injury that would always keep me from being consistent in the gym.

I took my 400th BFT class today. 400th! You read that correctly. I joined shortly after my 5th breast cancer surgery and was wobbly and nervous after being inconsistent with exercise through treatment. The coaches and community are welcoming and supportive. What started as an 8pack monthly quickly moved to a 12pack and now I have an unlimited membership. I love the combo of strength training and cardio and feel truly transformed. I’m stronger, I feel better and I can’t shut up about my bone density. I owe so much of my recovery to BFT and look forward to the next 400 classes.

This is a great gym for busy people who don't have time to think about how to stay fit. The class format really works for me, and after ~6 months I'm seeing huge improvements. The 8-week blocks keep us focused on specific exercises, which translates to feeling like I am actually mastering the different lifts and exercises. I can tell the classes are thoughtfully laid out and planned with long-term improvements in mind. I almost exclusively do the strength training classes for my personal fitness goals. The coaches are all really kind and genuinely want us to improve. I enjoy being corrected so I don't hurt myself during the lifts and appreciate all the helpful feedback and suggestions I get, solicited and unsolicited. Try it!!! You will be surprised how easy it is to say "yes" to the membership after your second class!!!

Good community, good instructors, good program. I like the mix of workouts, varying between strength, high intensity, and cardio, also with feedback on lifting technique. The 8-week challenges (optional) have proven great for really noticeable change, and the meals are pretty good, too (they provide recipes and weekly shopping lists). Between two 8-week challenges, I've lost 25+ lb and built strength. Definitely a thumbs up.

My daughter and I tried this gym for the first time because we were looking for some weight and HIIT training classes. We were very impressed with the efficacy of the booking, the reception, the facility, and the quality of the trainers who gave us individual corrections even with TV monitors that showed each move clearly. I didn’t like my previous experiences with studios like this because they were always too loud, impersonal, and gave no clear direction. BFT is so different.

The location is also easy to get to with easy parking. This is a great balance to my reformer classes We’re definitely going back.

Body Fit Training has helped me in my fitness goals. Since October 2023 this training program has helped me to drop 7 pounds of body fat and gain 7 pounds of muscle. If you just do what the coaches tell you, your body will get healthier. FYI this is not a fast process but it does work.

Group workouts with tvs that show the moves and coaches that circulate. I have work and kids etc so I quite like the timers counting down to class starting and ending - no matter who is teaching you know the class will start on time😅 I am loving it and getting stronger going twice a week to supplement my running. I suspect the format may be a little bit intimidating for folks who have less experience - I'd encourage new folks to stick with it for a few classes to truly get a feel for it.

I'd been wanting to get back into shape for a long time and came across BFT Rockridge. I had done CrossFit years ago and loved the group training environment, but had to stop due to all the injuries. I'm so ecstatic I found this gym. The coaches are stellar and the community is incredible. Everyone cheers you on and this is a friendly, no-judgement zone.

I've been a member since September 2023 and I've already lost 17 pounds and look so much better in my clothes. More importantly, I feel healthy and this is the kind of gym I see myself sticking with for decades to come. The variety of workouts keeps it exciting and it's a great balance between cardio and strength training. I can't recommend this gym more. Give it a try. You won't regret it!

By far my favorite group class I’ve ever attended. Coaches are kind, courteous and motivating without making you feel unsafe or “less than”. They offer actionable feedback on form and help you actually get stronger whilst avoiding injury.

Programming is really solid and structured in a way to fundamentally get stronger. The days also rotate so if you can only come on certain days, you won’t be stuck doing the same class over and over like other group workouts.

Equipment is clean, plentiful and high quality. You’re never having to go lighter or heavier than you want simply because there aren’t enough barbells.

Lastly the community is so solid. Every body type is represented and people are extremely supportive and kind. Overall just a very safe and motivating space.

This place is awesome. I’ve never felt comfortable at a gym and have avoided for a long time. But had 2 friends highly recommended this place and honestly had been awesome. Everyone so friendly, coaches super nice and come over frequently to check on you, ensure you have proper motions to works correct muscles and keep you from getting hurt, and even help you to figure out alternative strategies if an area of your body is sore. Heart rate monitor is also super cool and informative. If you’re on the fence, def try it out - they usually have a promotion to make trying out risk-free.

TL;DR review of BFT

I came from Orange Fitness so I'm going to list the main differences between Orange Theory Fitness (OTF) and Body Fitness Training (BFT) as they both ask you to wear HR monitors and has "scoring".

HR (HEART RATE) AND "SCORING"

- BFT: you’re rewarded to stay in a zone (e.g. 80 - 90% HR for cardio) and push yourself but not too hard, and the coaches there use it to tailor your effort. If you exceed the recommended HR, you gain less points than if you stayed.

- In OTF, I usually don’t hear anything from the coaches about my individual HR, and I’m not discouraged from pushing to red (90%+ HR) and staying there. You get the same “splat points” for being in the Orange zone (think 80% - 89%) and Red zone (I think it’s like 90 - 100%+)

COACHING

- BFT: You have 2 - 3 coaches who watch you and ask you to improve your form, if needed

- OTF: Because there’s only one coach, and he/she has to oscillate between the cards and weights, he/she doesn’t really have much time to correct your postures

CARDIO

- BFT has 6 or more cardio exercises in my mixed session, so they could have more than that in a pure cardio session

- OTF: Only 2 cardio options: row and treadmill

VARIETY

- BFT has a lot more variety and they even have boxing/kickboxing with bags. For Cardio day, I did 12 different exercises with several machines (ski machine, 2 different stationary bikes, treadmill, row machine)

- OTF: has 2 main options: cardio (row and tread) and some weights. I did a “tread” day there where I was on a treadmill for 60 minutes.

COST

- BFT is $200 for 8 classes ($25/class)

- OTF is $250 for 10 classes (also $25/class)

COMMUNITY and NUTRITION

- BFT has a 8 week challenge 3 times a year where you measure your body fat, and whoever loses the most gets a cash prize (I think it's like $2000). The challenge also helps you with nutritional guidance with recommended calories, protein, fat, carbs and gives you recipes to follow if you choose. In addition, you can be on "teams" and the team that collectively loses the most has a donation to a charity of their choice, which I thought was pretty cool.

SUMMARY

- I would compare BFT to personal training with a lot more variety and OTF to more of a Spin class where you’re not getting as much personal attention from the trainer.

DETAILED REVIEW:

This is my 2nd visit to BFT in 2 weeks.

The coaches divided us into groups of 2 with three trainers overseeing about 12 of us, resulting in a ratio of roughly four clients per trainer. This setup was helpful to me as I was new to the exercises and appreciated the instructions.

The variety of cardio machines was impressive, as I did 6 different cardio machines:

- Battle Ropes
- Bike with arms
- Treadmill with parachute resistance
- Nordic Skiing machine
- Bike without arms
- Rowing

Battle Ropes was a killer, and the rope was barely moving during my 3rd set. However, I saw some of the veterans doing the ropes, and the coach was using his hand and asking the client to reach that level with the ropes. Yikes.

Following the cardio, the second half of the class focused on
strength training, primarily targeting the lower body with hinge movements like deadlifts. This part of the workout was intense but never whelming. I used my HR to make sure that I wasn’t overworking.

Something I found interesting is a day called "beast mode" day, where they roll out the bags and give boxing gloves to everyone.

Overall, the workout was challenging but manageable. It struck the right balance between pushing my limits and ensuring I could complete the exercises. I definitely felt accomplished at the end.

I could also feel a sense of community; my workout partner, along with the trainers, provided helpful tips on correcting my posture on one exercise, and that's the most important value for me to get a trainer: having good posture so I don't injure myself.

I say give it a shot!

This is the first time I've done this type of workout and I love the concept of personal training meets group classes. It is a great mix of cardio and strength training so every day is a new challenge for me. The heart rate monitoring during class keeps me focused (and distracted from the pain. ha!). Love BFT! Everyone that works there is very kind and welcoming. They picked a great bunch of people to work there.

Also, I love quick-group workouts but one problem i've come across is that most places don't have the best options for strength. This gym provides a balanced mix of cardio and strength, and has a thoughtful weekly schedule that creates a cohesive day-by-day workout plan for you. (if you decide on going multiple days a week)

I go here to supplement my other cardio-based activities and is really great part of my fitness ecosystem! (: Thanks everyone! Ya'll are awesome.

If you're looking for a training program that covers all your bases, BFT is it! I was quite skeptical to join and leave my previous gym, but I'm so glad I did.

This gym has a well rounded focus on strength and endurance and uses your heart rate as a guide for when to pull back or give it more. It really feels like specialized personal training, but in a fun group environment.

There is always more than one coach on the floor and they're all so incredibly knowledgable, energetic, and willing to help to make sure you're getting the most out of each exercise.

I'd recommend this gym if you're willing to commit 3 or more days a week so you're really getting the most out of the program cycle (they typically have a 8 week progression cycle).

One thing I tried recently that I really loved was an Evolt360 body composition scan. These scans are included in your membership and allow you to track your progress with more than just a number on a scale. I think they retest every 4 - 8 weeks.

Another item to note is they don't have showers, but they do offer free garage parking! Overall, if you're looking for a gym to join or want to switch up your current routine, I'd highly recommend giving BFT a try.

Let's workout together :D

Brand new fitness studio in the rockridge area. They do circuit style training with a variety of stations that you rotate through.

The coaches are great and the equipment is really nice. My only area of improvement would be to have it a bit more organized at the beginning in the warmup so everyone has enough room to stretch out and follow along. It would also be great to have window treatments as the sun does get in your eyes if you’re working on a machine looking outside.
