About the Club

Bishop Yoga & Pilates Center has Been Around for 20 + Years Now!
Founded by Mary Devore who moved to Bishop, CA with the idea of forming a center where people could come together to develop their mind and body. Mary is a certified Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher and a certified Stott Pilates teacher. She provides a clean, quiet place with a multitude of props and equipment where people can study and learn about the ancient art of yoga and the subtleties of pilates from highly qualified and certified teachers. Classes and workshops are offered at the studio.

Mary’s yoga class is one of the reasons I love living in Bishop. Her extensive training in the tradition of BKS Iyengar is complemented by her experience as a professional outdoor athlete and skilled body worker. She reads bodies extremely well and provides lots of individual instruction and adjustments suited for your needs. Can recommend her classes to people of any level!

This was my first time doing Pilates & I am so glad I had the night off because I thoroughly enjoyed it! Mary is an amazing teacher that really emphasizes proper technique and form - which I really appreciate! She is good at explaining the muscles that require activation and the breath work that accompanies each movement. There is so much to think about while doing each exercise but she helps with physical and verbal cues that make it easy to understand - again, which I really appreciate! She is very mindful of one’s injuries or limitations and works with you to strengthen those weaknesses or minimize discomfort to any sore or injured parts of your body. I can’t wait to take more of her classes as I could already tell after just the one class how this will benefit my everyday life and all the sports I like to do. Do yourself a favor and join her class! Thanks Mary!!!!

I’ve taken yoga classes throughout my life here and there (mostly from hotshot yogis in San Francisco) since I’ve heard so many people espouse the amazing benefits of a regular yoga practice, but I never personally felt these benefits until I took Mary’s class. I really appreciate the focus on form and the individualized adjustments. Since taking her class, the nagging pain in my ankles and knees (due to a decade long injury) have FINALLY subsided and I feel more balanced overall.

I have been doing yoga with Mary for 9 years now, and I am convinced that my health is vastly better because of it. She is an observant, careful teacher who takes her practice incredibly seriously and pays individual attention to a student's progress. A study recently came out showing that proper yoga is better to relieve back pain than typical medications, and Mary provides an excellent environment to gain the most benefit from practicing yoga. I gained a lot from her pilates instruction last summer as well.

I absolutely love taking Iyengar classes with Mary. She is the best yoga teacher I've ever had and I won't take classes with any other instructor. Even when I was in Boulder, CO for graduate school, I could not find an instructor that matched her level of instruction and attention. Mary is by far the best yoga teacher I have ever had. She is clear and precise, and her deep awareness of how the human body works informs all aspects of her teaching and practice. I’ve been able to get stronger and heal old injuries working with her. I like the studio space too. It’s light and airy and easy to work in.

Classes can have a wide age range, from athletes in their 20's to those,like me, in their 70's. Mary is able to teach classes that meet the needs of a diverse student base. She is exceptional in helping students modify for injuries, she works with each student individually to correct and improve form, and encourages each student to reach their goals and potential.
