The best secret of the Laurel District & potentially Oakland is the awesomeness that is this gym. Terrific trainers: Angelo, Nico, Minh, and Warren are super knowledgeable, experienced, friendly, kind, non-toxic. They hold you accountable, offer support as you need, and create a positive and supportive culture. This isn’t just a gym, it’s a community.
I have been coming here for 2 years. I’m the strong and most confident I’ve been with myself physically. After a year of training, my partner and I did lot of high altitude hiking in South America. We couldn’t have done these without the unintentional sea-level training in Oakland.

This has been my gym for ~4 years now. I was 41yo, 4 mos postpartum when I first walked in and had almost exclusively relied on running for excercise. Strength training was new to me, but it has made a real difference.
The gym is small in a good way. You get to know people and the community is genuinely supportive. They pay attention to your progress even if you aren’t doing personal training.
The trainers are the best! There’s a mix of personalities and styles and I’ve always felt comfortable asking questions. No egos , just people who want you to feel confident and get stronger at your own pace- but don't worry they won't let you phone it in.
Most of all it's a fun vibe, I look forward to going even when I dont feel like going.

I've been training with Angelo for about a year now. I initially started working with Angelo to stabilize and strengthen a shoulder injury which was causing a lot of discomfort and compromised mobility. As my shoulder improved (almost 100% now) we've shifted towards building strength. I have a lot of fun training with Angelo and he always challenges me to push beyond what I realize I'm capable of.
They've built an incredible community at Body Mechanix from the trainers to the other members which is inclusive and supportive of one another creating a safe, comfortable space no matter your ability, age or level of fitness.

Have been training here for almost three years and it's been great! the vibe & the community have been top notch. All of the trainers are super supportive & foster a great environment. I've done personal training with Angelo on & off over the years, with the focuses being rehabing from a torn ACL and later targeted plans to help with my overall fitness. Particularly with my ACL recovery, Angelo's plans were tailored specifically to me & where I was at each step in the recovery process. It was incredibly helpful to making my recovery go smoothly. I was ahead of schedule at every checkpoint with the doctor's, and much of that was due to Angelo's careful approach.

This review is for Minh Hang, personal trainer, as well as the whole gym.
After just a couple sessions of personal training with Minh I am noticeably stronger, and my joints feel more secure. I came to Minh when I was about 8 months postpartum because I was having trouble keeping up in high impact fitness classes due to a weak / recovering core (c-section), prior knee injury, and a lack of strength from not working out at all in my 3rd trimester. Minh really listened to what was going on with me and has since helped me learn and practice exercises that have led to more stability and strength overall. He is a calm and encouraging presence and support. Within just a month or so I was already feeling great and beginning to see results in my body. Thanks to Minh I recently deadlifted almost all my body weight, something I did not think was possible just a few weeks prior. He pushes me just the right amount, and is focused on form, health, and my goals.
The Body Mechanix gym (Laurel) in general is a good vibe. People are welcoming and within a few visits, folks start to learn your name. It's a supportive atmosphere and there is always a trainer on site willing to help.
The group classes are a fantastic workout. Within the first few minutes you forget that you didn't want to workout that day – you're just IN IT. Before I know it I'm sweating and feeling great, and then boom, the hour is over and I am so glad I went. Love this gym, so glad it's in the Laurel.

I’ve been lifting for about 6 years and accomplished my physical goal already but over the years, injuries filed up.
I joined Body Mechanics in Laurel district, Oakland, hoping that I can learn kettlebell workouts.
My trainer’s name is Minh and he has shown me so much knowledge that I wouldn’t have able to understand by myself. He also explained why and how my injury might have occurred. I can flex parts of my backs that I wasn’t able to feel before and have way better mimd n body connection.
I am pretty sure beginners can achieve so much and experienced lifters definitely need his help.
There are at least 3 other trainers that I know,
they are always training people and they are all so knowledgeable.
This gym is not your normal 24hrfitness or
Planet fitness, can’t compare, different level.

Exercising with Minh at Body Mechanix has been critical for my postpartum recovery! After doing some light cardio and ab recovery at home I knew I needed help with mobility, flexibility, strength and weight loss. I’ve hired trainers before but Minh’s knowledge of mobility is far superior to anyone I have worked with before. I’m so glad that I came to see Minh at Body Mechanix because his coaching had made me feel strong and flexible in a way that I haven’t since before 2 kids. For example, carrying a 20lb infant in a car seat down stairs feels like no big deal. And the back and knee pain that I had been experiencing is mostly gone. I am still working through some goals and Minh has been encouraging and empathetic.

If you want a trainer, this is the place. I would call it holistic training because it's mind and body. Not only do they work on helping you get strong, they help.woth mobility which is equally important. I've been with them for about a year now, and notice the change in my body. I started personal training with Minh 2 months ago. I had no real experience working out in a gym so was nervous about getting started, but knew I needed to make some changes in life so took the leap! Minh is super knowledgeable and made me comfortable from the start. I also really appreciate his holistic approach to fitness. He does a great job at challenging me to push through and do more than I think I can do and also manages to make it fun! Since I’ve started, I’ve noticed I feel stronger and have more energy. I’ve had persistent tension headaches and back/neck pain over the past few years, but never knew how to properly work out without making things worse. Since I started strengthening these muscles groups this has improved dramatically! I would 100% recommend this place to anyone looking to improve their overall health! Just do it, you won’t regret it!

I started working with Minh at Body Mechanix Laurel after not working out regularly for several years and having some pretty specific health limitations. It’s in my neighborhood so I just stopped by one day to find out more information– they were very welcoming and I didn't experience high pressure to sign up or join. They were able to offer me a free intro session, so I checked it out. Something I appreciate about Minh is that from day one, he’s taken an overall comprehensive approach to the mind/body connection– he continually helps me to think about how stress and other mental factors might be affecting my physical state. He’s also very knowledgeable about how to work with different injuries and health limitations, which has been important for me. While working with Minh over the past year, he’s helped me build up strength and remained encouraging while challenging me to be my best. I was very low energy and pretty out of shape when I started, and have since been able to notice a big difference in my day-to-day abilities. I think sometimes people hesitate to go to smaller gyms, thinking they won’t fit in or that everyone will be extremely fit– here, there’s a wide variety of people spanning different ages and physical fitness levels. If you want to find community here, Minh, Angelo and the team offer many optional classes and fun events you can attend– alternatively, you can also just use it as a place to work out where you’re surrounded by friendly and knowledgeable trainers.

A friend put me on to this gym, everyone there is nice and welcoming. I had the pleasure of working with Minh. I haven't had the best experiences with trainers in the past but Minh was great. He took the time to really listen to my goals which are bettering my posture and movement. He explained everything is fully focused on our session and very friendly and professional. With in the first four sessions I can notice a difference in my posture.

As someone who had never stepped foot in a gym before, I was nervous about taking the plunge at Body Mechanix. I couldn't have made a better choice. The community here is incredibly warm and welcoming—you genuinely feel like everyone is cheering each other on. It has an authentic Oakland vibe rather than the intimidating "gym bro" atmosphere I'd feared.
Personal training sessions with Minh have been absolutely transformative for my strength, flexibility, and—most importantly—helping me feel healthy and energized throughout the week. Minh is organized, knowledgeable, encouraging, and genuinely fun to work with. Over the past couple of months, I've strengthened weaker areas, improved my mobility, and learned so much about how my body works.
The results have been noticeable beyond the gym too—on the soccer field, I feel more dynamic and effective than ever. I can't recommend Minh and Body Mechanix highly enough!

At the start of 2025, I was looking too get back into shape and setup my fitness for my 30s. One of my friends recommended this gym and I ended up working with Minh, one of the personal trainers. From the start, Minh was able to identify weaknesses in my body and worked with me to address those issues.
We worked on improving flexibility in my lower body and Minh was even able to help activate muscles that I hadn't previously used. Minh is also extremely knowledgeable about how the muscles work together, and he is able to help you focus on the muscle groups during the exercise and help you understand what the muscles responsibilities are.
I tend to be a person who enjoys being pushed and challenged with new workouts each time. Minh has a great balance of understanding where your body is at and how much he can push to get the most out of you. Every training session ends with me dripping in sweat, but it feels great knowing that I gave it my best.
It has been a pleasure training with Minh and all of the BodyMechanix community. Every one is extremely warm and inviting, and they provide a sense of community where everyone's goals are aligned. Thanks team!

I’ve been training at Body Mechanix for a little over a month and have nothing but positive things to say about the experience! Starting with my trainer, Terrell (also happens to be the owner) - he is extremely methodical with the workouts we do, and a great teacher too. He has a LOT of knowledge and honestly could teach a college course on all of this. I’m not the most experienced with weight training, and Terrell has been so helpful and patient the whole way through. Also, he did a complimentary Fascia Therapy session at the beginning of one of our sessions and it was awesome - I highly recommend checking him out for that, it was truly the best stretch I’ve ever gotten and got rid of all the shoulder/back tension I went into the gym with. Grateful to have been introduced to it!
And then there’s the gym itself - the vibe, community and space are unmatched. Love the neighborhood, and the space itself has such a warm and inviting energy to it. It also never feels overly packed - everything is spaced out really well and the trainers do a great job of keeping the space organized for both the open gym + classes. The entire staff is so kind, and will go out of their way to introduce themselves and make sure you feel welcome.
For some background, I found out about Body Mechanix on a whim through a cold google search, while looking for small group weight training classes. I actually moved back temporarily to the Bay and was looking for a way to keep up my workouts in a class setting that didn’t feel overwhelming (not a huge Barry’s or solid core fan). I wanted weight training, but in a community based environment - not a large commercial gym. Body Mechanix is all of that and more! While I go back and forth between NYC and Oakland, I plan to always come back to Body Mechanix for as long as I’m in town :)
If you’re thinking about it, definitely give Body Mechanix a shot - the investment in yourself is worth every penny when you’re with this gym!

I didn’t expect personal training to shift so much in my life, but working with Minh at Body Mechanix has been a game-changer! I originally came in wanting to feel stronger and more consistent in my movement practice. I’ve worked with several trainers over the years, and Minh is hands-down the best.

My partner and I have been working with a personal trainer here for a couple years now. Doing "couples sessions" is pretty motivating and fun for us.
We're currently training with Terrell who is incredibly knowledgeable and always keeps it fresh for us while listening and adapting to any particular goals we may have (e.g. whether it be preventing running injuries for me, or more upper body strength for aerial silks for her)
It's always good vibes in here-- every single trainer is super nice and friendly-- I don't think I would be disappointed training with anyone.

Trying to get back in the fitness game was tough, but speaking with trainers at the Laurel Street Fair I decided to give the gym a try. I met with Angelo, and instantly he kicked my butt, but in a good way. He made it easy to push myself without intimidate me. He met me at my fitness level, while encouraged me to push just a bit more each session, event when I thought I couldn't. While Angelo was my trainer, all staff were welcoming and encouraging. Also, expect some good laughs in the gym in-between grunting from the workout.

Joining this gym has been one of my best random impulse decisions ever. Six months ago, the idea of working out and actually lifting weights was just an idea that I thought would be cool. I met Minh, My personal trainer at the Body Mechanix Fitness booth at a community event. He was cool and nice and invited me to the gym. At the time I wanted to start a fitness journey that I could manage. I had a didn't really have a goal or a clue of what to do at gym but I wanted to try something new. I had tried to go to the gym on my own and spent most of time reading the instructions on the machine. It was awkward and the environment seemed intimidating. I didn't know anything and Minh really took the time to start from then basics. I gained confidence in trying new challenges. With Minh's guidance and support I began enjoying sweating and working out. I am learning about myself and realized that going to the gym exercised more than just muscles. I am building mind and body connection that I didn't know I lacked. Minh really takes his time to explain things in a concept that I can relate to. We have some funny wild times. Even creating my gym persona "Jess Like Arnold" (in my Arnold Schwarzenegger voice). I really have to attribute my new found joy in weight lifting from Minh. He is engaging and entertaining and educational. He is patient with me and makes adjustments. He is easy to approach with any question or concern, which helps when you have experienced heave "Gymtimation " through out your whole life. I am proud to say he has help me build my courage up to venture out, and go to the gym solo and apply what I have learned in our sessions. Although I actually found that I prefer going to Body Mechanixs. They have a variety of weights and I am always greeted so warmly. I really feel like this my gym community. All of the trainers are super nice, encouraging and helpful. They know you by name and that makes it so much more like a community that you would want to continue to be part of. I am so proud that I have been training with Minh. I am excited with the progress I've made. Minh keeps me on my toes. He is always having me try new things and i think that attributes to my fun time. I feel like this was definitely a smart move. I am happy that Minh has partnered with me on this journey. I know I would not be half as successful as I am now without him as my trainer. I would recommend you come check him out. Body Mechanix Fitness is a great gym that has something for everyone. I see some great trainers building a great community. They are active in the community so check them out.

I’ve spent the last six months working with Minh Hang twice a week in one hour training sessions at Body Mechanix- Laurel.
TL;DR: Drop whatever you’re doing, re-arrange your finances, and start training yesterday. You’ll feel stronger both physically and mentally, and be fully supported 100% along your journey.
For most of my life, I never thought I’d be able to do the things that I’ve learned how to do at Body Mechanix with Minh. I had never done any type of strength training and I had never been able to stick to any sort of fitness training plan. I had never played any sports ever in my life. I started with literally no experience with strength training or gyms.
After six months of working with Minh, I not only feel physically stronger and more comfortable in my body, but more confident in myself and my own capacity for change. Working with Minh twice a week was perfect for me- he thoughtfully planned each workout and showed me how to do it all, while also teaching me how to be able to do it by myself. These are the types of things that you can’t learn from a million YouTube fitness videos- having a real person right there walking me through every step and giving instant feedback so I could adjust until I could do it by myself. I literally never imagined myself ever being able to do the things I’ve learned from Minh at Body Mechanix. And now I have the confidence to be able to walk into any gym and be able to create a solid workout for myself, based on what my body feels like it needs on any given day.
As a trainer, Minh is perceptive- he always understands the vibe and what a client needs most at any particular moment. When I need a push, he pushes. When I need more support or just am having a harder day getting into it, he structures the workout around that. He’s really great at understanding how to get someone to complete a difficult task based on how they're feeling and what works for them. On top of all that, he’s just a genuinely nice guy who’s fun to talk to in between sets. His approach to training focuses on understanding your body and equipping you with skills and knowledge to both lift really heavy things, but also move more comfortably throughout the world. I’m doing both now!
The community at Body Mechanix is supportive and kind, filled with friendly vibes. If you want to keep to yourself and grind one out, you totally can, or if you want to chop it up with folks there’s room for that too. Don’t be fooled by whatever existing stereotypes about gyms you have might internalized- everyone here is nice AND loves lifting really heavy things.
For a long time I struggled to do any of this by myself- but here I am- stronger, happier, more confident, and still growing with every session- all thanks to Minh and this gym. If you’re on the fence about it, let this review get you off the fence and into Body Mechanix. You’re worth the investment!

I highly recommend Body Mechanix and personal trainer Minh if you are looking for a supportive, knowledgeable group of people to help you achieve your fitness and health goals.
I began training with Body Mechanix's personal trainer Minh several years ago after a knee injury (ACL tear) that I sustained in my late 40's. My goal was to build strength, particularly in my injured leg, so I could return to skiing and hiking with my family.
Minh helped me to accomplish this goal and more. He created and guided me through work-outs that both strengthened my legs and also other important muscle groups in my back, core and arms. He gave me cardio aspects to the workout that improved my stamina and overall health.
When I first signed up with a personal trainer at the recommendation of my orthopedist who had diagnosed my ACL tear and who suggested a non-surgical approach to recovery, I had assumed I would be placed with a woman trainer. I was a little nervous when it turned out I was placed with a male trainer. Minh, however, made me feel comfortable from the start with his welcoming demeanor, attentive listening, and genuine love for what he does. He somehow manages to both challenge you beyond where you think you can go, so you're always improving, and also make the work-out fun, encouraging you to come back each week and stay committed to your own health.
When I first started working out with Minh, he was at the YMCA close to my home in Berkeley. When he moved to Body Mechanix in Oakland, I was hesitant to move with him because it was a twenty minute drive away. I knew for myself that adding a commute to my work-out routine might make me less likely to stick with it.
However, five months ago, I made the switch to Body Mechanix so I could continue to work with Minh. I'm so glad I made that decision. Minh continues to be an excellent trainer. And Body Mechanix is a great gym to be a part of. Everyone on staff welcomes you in like you are family. Positive, affirmative quotes surround you on its walls, like "If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you." The space is clean, light-filled, and organized, with an open-air back area that connects to the main room so the space feels expansive. It is located in the Laurel neighborhood of Oakland on MacArthur Blvd., with a friendly vibe where it's easy to park and fun to walk around.
Based on my experience, I can confidently say you won't regret checking out Body Mechanix and their personal trainers like Minh and letting them support you in your health routine. You deserve a place as good as this!

A long overdue review! I discovered BM almost three years ago. I had never loved a gym before, but Body Mechanix has been such a light in my life since day 1. The trainers and the community here are second to none. Welcoming, supportive, fun, and always a solid workout. I joined BodyMechaniX in the Laurel District about a month ago, and I’ve really been loving it so far. From day one, I felt genuinely welcomed and quickly fell into a rhythm that keeps me motivated. One of the coaches, Nico, stands out with his great music taste, warm demeanor, and super personable vibe. He makes every session feel approachable and fun. Body Mechanix is awesome. I mostly do my own workouts, and all the equipment is perfect for me, but the community here is what really makes it special. The trainers are great, super friendly, and great to hang out with when you need a work break in the day. It’s also a great place to meet people in the neighborhood—I’ve made some friends just from showing up regularly.
they even let me bring my fat old dog! and she’s lost 10 pounds since we started coming! It is officially her fav place to be. Highly recommend!

Come for the workout, stay for the community.
This gym has something for every fitness level. I've been attending the strength and conditioning classes, and it's the kind of place where everyone knows each other's names and encourages you! All of the coaches, including Angelo, Minh, Warren, Bry and Nico, are very knowledgeable and have their own unique styles while giving you a challenging but worthwhile experience.
Their open gym hours are also convenient if you prefer self-led workouts, or can't make it to class. I'm so glad I found this place and highly encourage others to check it out!

Huge kudos to Angelo Tollis and Body Mechanix on MacArthur. I was skeptical about training because I don’t have the time but Angelo really worked with me to create a routine that fits with my schedule and challenges me. I've been going to body mechanix for over a year now, after attending a few classes, I realized I needed to be here. Not only for my health, but also for the encouraging community it provides. The coaches are each unique in their own way. Some are funny and like to dance to keep you motivated, others challenge you to push just a little more, others even take the classes with you. I've been attending the 6am strength and conditioning classes...pushing,pulling, squatting my own body weight and/or something heavy. I feel stronger, I've built muscle, I feel healthier, I'm more athletic, I've learned new techniques and I've made some friendly connections. If you want to get stronger and more athletic, you should check it out. My only preference is that you don't book the 6am classes, only because then it will be harder for me to book them. 😂

Coach Mingh is also fantastic—super upbeat and full of energy! His coaching skills and enthusiasm made workouts both challenging and fun.
The passion these coaches bring to every class is undeniable. They create a welcoming, supportive environment that makes the gym feel like a true community. If I hadn’t moved out of the area, I would absolutely still be training here. I came here when I was ready to get some strength back after having my first baby. I did personal training with Minh, I came in for sessions but also was given a program and instructions I can follow on my own on the other days. I am feeling stronger and more confident in lifting. Body Mechanix in Oakland is a great gym with amazing classes and a sense of support and community every time I walked through the door. I was lucky enough to get to work one-on-one with Minh. He makes working out fun, while he also helped me take myself more seriously in the gym. With his help, skill and thoughtful support, I got strong, more flexible and a lot more confident. I was bummed to move away—I miss Minh and Body Mechanix!

I went to check out one of their strength and conditioning classes. It was a good challenge! The exercises were the right level of difficulty and the coach, Minh was super helpful at breaking down any exercises I wasn't familiar with. I liked the local community vibe too. I will definitely be back!

I am really happy I made the switch to Body Mechanix. It is a convenient neighborhood gym. It has good equipment. it is clean, the people are supportive, and environment is community oriented. I have been working with Minh Hang for nearly a year now and I have seen a lot of improvement in my mobility, strength and body awareness thanks to his knowledge, observations, and instruction. In addition to the quantifiable gains I have seen at the gym, I have seen improvement in my day-to-day life as I become stronger, more capable, and more self-confident which makes me more apt to try new things which I hope will include some of the group classes or activities offered at Body Mechanix.

Happy I found this gym! They provide trainer-led strength classes or you can go during “open gym” to do your own thing. IMO the true value is in the classes.
Trainers are knowledgeable, have a lot of personality, and they truly want to help you. The other members are nice and there’s a decent sense of community.
I did my first Spartan race this year, and several members and trainers did it with me. Which was a gesture I’ll never forget.
You can either be a direct member or use ClassPass.
Parking: metered or just find a side street. Or go at 6a like me and it won’t be a problem!

This place is EVERYTHING. I started coming to Body Mechanix in Feb 2022 with the intention of shedding a few lbs before my wedding in August and became addicted. My goals have changed -- instead of just looking good, I go to BM to feel good, to challenge my mind and body and to build community. I am genuinely happier and more fulfilled since becoming a member.
Body Mechanix offers group classes every morning and a 6pm and 7pm class in the evenings. You can also sign up for open gym during the day. The classes vary between trainers and conditioning and strength focuses but ALWAYS leave you feeling satisfied and challenged. The trainers provide variations and encourage you to challenge yourself. When I first started coming to Body Mechanix I had never lifted a bar bell, I now know the safe mechanics of lifting and performing other exercises.
Body Mechanix is all about community, the trainers and the BM team plans events, outings, parties, challenges, and celebrations for the members. The trainers care about the members and their clients and the memebers are all so friendly! It is so refreshing to be part of such a genuine community.

During the pandemic, I had moved from San Jose to Oakland, which placed me about an hour away from my home gym. I shopped around and couldn’t find something that fit my needs, until I realized there was a Body Mechanix walking distance from my home. Not only is my open gym membership reasonably priced for being a private gym, but the gym has all the equipment I need for lifting, as well as a ton of items I didn’t know I needed! There’s an abundance of resistance bands, mats, rollers, and other PT related stuff that I now use whenever a ligament injury flares up or when something just isn’t feeling right. On top of that, the staff is super friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming! If I’m doing something that needs correcting (which is often, since I’ve been off for two straight years), I’m given valuable advice and adjustments to form. I’ll also add that the clients are super friendly and nice as well, which is something that I had at my old gym and could not find at all the other places I tried out. Everyone is mindful about cleaning equipment and placing it back where it needs to be. The classes are also super engaging and thoughtfully programmed by their staff. In conclusion, you can’t go wrong by signing up at this gym, whether it’s open gym or classes or (shared)/personal training.
One last thing I’ll add is if you choose an open gym membership, there is a white board that helps you program for yourself so you’re not going in aimlessly wondering what to do. If you have any questions on how to structure your workouts or how to do a movement, a coach is always present to help you if you need it! Walking into a gym and not really knowing where to start is an easy way to get discouraged and/or lose motivation. Body mechanix is set up so that you can have a plan and will want to continue going.

This is a very inclusive and supportive local gym. It's super clean, and they have a ton of equipment. They make a point of knowing their clients names, the trainers all care about you, they have a great variety of group classes and I can really truly say I look forward to coming in every time. Can't recommend more highly. Also - they've definitely kicked my butt back in shape.

This gym is amazing. They have a sign on the wall that says “We don’t sell memberships. We build relationships.” That’s the vibe. Low ego, hard workouts. Mostly instructor led classes and personal training. Great mix of beginners and more advanced folks, and great gender and ethnic diversity. Everyone who works here is super supportive and knowledgeable. Miguel is the man.

Honestly, it’s a hidden gem in the Laurel District. The trainers are quite attentive and committed in supporting you with meeting your fitness goals. The group classes are my favorites. I usually go to the weekly 6am classes because the vibes just set me right for the rest of the day. It really does feel like a community. 🧡

I joined this gym for a month while visiting Oakland. Started out just using it for the open gym and for that it's just ok. Few small issues like the power rack being far from the plates, missing dumbbells, broken computer on one of the two bikes, but it was workable.
Then I tried the group fitness classes. That's when I really started to enjoy myself. Got to know all the trainers and they're really knowledgeable and positive to help you stay motivated. The classes really pushed me and I felt great every time. They are core, leg and cardio heavy. When I got home to my usual push/pull/legs routine I found my squats and core work had improved but things like bench press and pull ups got worse.
If I had a do-over I would do the group classes from the get go as the trainers are excellent and it's a good crowd. I would just add some extra strength work to keep my shirts fitting tight.
