Predatory pricing and subscription.

We had signed up for a lesson near the end of the month, and couldn't make it. We were charged ~$200, then two days later charged another $160 for the next month, totally nearly $400 in charges in the first couple of days without even being able to attend. To make it worse, you need to call to cancel and it's a 30 day notice, so you're likely to get charged again.

Avoid this business.

My kids love British Swim School! We started with a summer session with teacher Destinie. She was great with the kids, helping them feel comfortable in the water. They loved class so much they kept asking when they can see teacher Destinie again! We continued on with weekly lessons. Both kids have been able to advance in their skills which is great to see. Teacher Maddie has been great at helping my son overcome his fears of putting his face in the water, and my daughter of jumping in unassisted. Teacher Gage has been great helping make the starfish class fun for my youngest, so he stays engaged and excited to keep trying. Absences are easy to communicate and reschedule through the app, and I love seeing the skill notes the teachers leave after each class.

We have gone to British Swim School for several years now and are so happy with the curriculum and more importantly the staff. Kaitlyn at our location always greets us and is so encouraging to my kids. When is comes to the most patient people on earth, these instructors give kid ski school instructors a run for their money. We love British Swim School and now have 2 confident swimmers.

Destiny and Anthony are amazing. They were able to squeeze us into a last minute class yesterday and were kind enough to use our make up class that was going to expire. Our original plan was to travel to San Mateo for the make up class. Thank you both for being so accommodating! I appreciate your help.

British Swim school is a well organized company. They have excellent instructors for all levels and ages. They deal well with children who may have fear of the water. They have 2 to 3 supervisors observing the children's progress. There is one stand out supervisor katlyn who constantly is watching over the kids and updating parents on your child's progress. She has a very charming personality that children like. When updating the parents and the child is next to you she gives them praise and encouragement on their success.

British swim school is the best swim program in the SF area. Besides having multiple convenient locations, the small class sizes and patient and attentive teachers have been really helpful. Their app and web site offer tools that make session absences and makeup rescheduling easy, and their instructors are backed up by system that tracks individual students so students can take advantage of instruction by different teachers and at different locations.

As an adult who decided to finally conquer my fear of water and learn to swim properly, I couldn't have asked for a better instructor than Nicky at British Swim School. Her approach to teaching adults is both professional and empathetic, making the learning process comfortable and effective.

Nicky's teaching style is clear and methodical. She breaks down complex swimming techniques into manageable steps, providing detailed explanations and demonstrations. What I particularly appreciated was her patience and understanding of the unique challenges adults face when learning to swim, such as overcoming ingrained fears or correcting long-held improper techniques.

Throughout our sessions, Nicky maintained a perfect balance of pushing me to improve while respecting my limits. Her encouraging demeanor and constructive feedback were instrumental in helping me progress in my swim journey.

Nicky's expertise extends beyond just teaching strokes. She provided valuable insights into proper breathing techniques, body positioning, and efficiency in the water.

I highly recommend Nicky at British Swim School for any adult looking to learn or improve their swimming skills. Her expertise, patient instruction, and ability to instill confidence make her an exceptional swim instructor. Thank you, Nicky.

Both of my kid can attend the swimming class almost every day and kids swimming skills has improved a lot in 3 weeks. My three kids take classes at British Swim School Ocean Ave location. They started at the summer British Swim School classes at Millbrae Meadows. From the moment they started classes with BSS, they said "this is the best swim class we've ever taken." We have taken classes at 3 other swim schools so this is saying a lot. What we love best are the expert teachers: Nicki, Josh, & Xenia. We also love the method and how precise they are with teaching stroke techniques. Top notch!

We love our experience with the staff. Kaitlyn has been the best! As coordinator, keeps us in the loop on our kiddo’s progress. She leads us through what our children are working on, where they need to improve, some ways we can support them and what she sees as their timeline. It’s been so helpful for us. She’s been very personable and kind. Maddy has been a big support for our 5-year old, who struggled with some specific techniques. The way Maddy was able to support and encourage really helped breakthrough and provide confidence. Leah with clear, direct communication has helped my 6 year old to improved technique and become a more confident swimmer.

Instructors are great, but this isn't a good location. The pool is too cold for babies and young toddlers. My 14 month old used to love the water, but now she cries when she sees the pool because its so cold. She is shivering and has blue lips at the end. It's not possible for her to really make progress because she's just miserable and cold. The instructors say that the gym controls the pool temp, but it's their responsibility to make it warm enough for the kids that they teach.

From my perspective this will be a CERO STARTS place!
1. Their place is not safe for kids! I have to “rinse” my kids in front of a bunch of adult strangers - who are in underwear at the jacuzzi where kids are allow to get in! Come on!
2. There’s no showers for kids neither a good place to get dress.
3. Kids can use the bathroom but not to get shower or dress.
4. Classes are slow and in group classes your kid swims for about 10 min from the 30 min timeframe

I’ve been in LPB and other schools overseas and for sure since day one we saw all of the red flags!

Plus, after our second class we decided to stop coming besides we already pay for the classes - we’ll, let me tell you that for such a bad experience you still have to submit a 30 day cancellation form!
So we have to pay one month extra because that how they make money
It just sucks - please keep your kids safe and stay away of this location/school

I signed up for British Swim School with the hope of providing my child with a safe, reliable, and professional swimming education. Instead, I was met with one of the most unprofessional and concerning experiences I’ve ever encountered. From start to finish, their business practices seem designed to deceive parents and trap them into paying for services that utterly fail to deliver on their promises.

First and foremost, the safety of children appears to be an afterthought. We were so worried about the lack of oversight and the dangerously lax supervision that we decided to stop attending, even though we had already paid for additional sessions. The teachers don’t seem to take their role seriously, and children are frequently left unsupervised. Other parents are equally alarmed, with some even taking action by going to City Hall to push for the closure of this program due to safety risks. This level of negligence is absolutely unacceptable, especially when children’s lives are at stake.

On top of that, their customer service is absolutely abysmal. I tried multiple times to get in touch with them through email and phone to address these issues, and every time I was either ignored or given vague, unhelpful responses. It’s clear that they have no real interest in customer satisfaction—they just want your money. Reading through other reviews confirms this pattern. Many parents have complained about the same lack of communication and the school’s failure to respond to concerns. They simply do not care.

They are more interested in taking your money than actually providing a service. This company is a scam, plain and simple. Do not trust this company. Take your business elsewhere before it’s too late as they will lie to your face and then lie to any chance they get.

I wish I didn't have to write this post, but please avoid British Swim School at this location. I strongly advise against this swim course for toddlers.

As a former competitive swimmer, I wanted my son to learn water safety from professionals. I had a good experience at La Petite Baleen in the Presidio, but since we moved further south, I thought I would give British Swim School a chance assuming that they were equally trained to teach a toddler course, to assist parents in child swim development, and to handle emergency situations.

Unfortunately, this was not the case. The instructors were very poor at facilitating the class. The instructors did a poor job instructing parents on how to handle toddlers in the water or to practice water safety skills. Lastly, the instructors "certified" my son as passing a skill when it was clear that he still struggled. I asked multiple times to clarify how he could improve, but their answer was simply "oh, don't worry about it."

I want British Swim School to be successful as I hope all the kids going through their program learn water safety, but at this moment, I would strongly advise to go elsewhere.

We really love British Swim School! There are many choices when it comes to swim lessons in the Bay Area, all of which are expensive, but BSS emphasizes water safety and education in addition to learning how to swim. After only 4 months, our daughter has learned to swim! She went from being pretty scared of even getting in to jumping off the side into friends' pools and being able to swim under the water and reach the side/steps safely. Learning how to float on her back (starfish float) gave her so much confidence. It all clicked and now she is swimming!

For the first few levels the teacher usually starts with a minute or two of play to help the child acclimate and enjoy being near and in the water and the classes end with 1-2 minutes of free play which the kids love and help reinforce the "enjoyment" of swim class.

We have liked ALL of the teachers and staff at the Ocean Ave location. The facilities are clean and more spacious than other locations. The staff members are super kind and helpful and check in on you as well as note progress and goals during every lessons -- unlike other swim schools, where you're truly only talking to just the instructor and they're quickly moving on to the next class. My daughter has enjoyed all her teachers (June, Liv, Brendan, Kaitlin, Ash, the list goes on...) but the fact that they don't have the same teacher each class helps with generalization of skills.

The amount of classes offered and the makeup policy is another reason we have enjoyed it so much and seen progress. The app is very helpful and user friendly and you can literally cancel and book another class the day of (if your kid is sick, etc). It makes scheduling so convenient.

My daughter now loves swimming and being near water which she didn't before, so thank you everyone at BSS!

Our twins have been taking a private lesson together for the past six months or so and are progressing very well. Anthony has been outstanding at communicating with us and giving the boys the best experience possible.

In fact, one of the our guys was ready to move on to Turtle 2 before his brother and without hesitation he suggested we continue the private lesson until the other boy was ready to move on, even though private classes are not normally offered for Turtle 2.

If you are able, definitely would recommend private lessons here to make the usual positive British Swim experience even more personalized!

Make sure you VERIFY ALL REVIEWS before considering taking classes at British swim school.

This is Sri. In my experience with the adult swim classes at the British Swim School, I found them to be LACKING in overall benefit. The classes are only 30 minutes long and typically have 2-3 students per session. This limited time and group setting make it challenging for the instructor to provide individual attention and address the specific needs of adult students, such as correcting faults or refining their swimming techniques. Additionally, each class is led by a different instructor, and they often ask students what they'd like to focus on that day, rather than following a structured set of lessons or a course.

If these limitations don't align with what you're looking for, I strongly advise against considering these classes. Moreover, the frequent rotation of instructors means there's NO continuity in tracking your progress or addressing your mistakes from one class to the next. This LACK of consistency can hinder your overall improvement.

For a more effective learning experience, I highly recommend seeking one-on-one classes with dedicated instructors elsewhere. Unfortunately, the British Swim School does not offer such personalized classes.

Furthermore, the 30-day cancellation policy they have in place does not seem FAIR. It's unclear why they cannot cancel a membership immediately or terminate it at the end of the current billing cycle. This policy may appear to overcharge people for services they no longer wish to use, giving the impression of taking advantage of their customers. I regret having already paid nearly $700 for three classes and being stuck with them for the remaining sessions, as they have already billed for the next month with no option for a refund.

In any case, I hope that this feedback will prove helpful to others as they make their decisions and avoid falling into what seems like a scheme. I noticed that another student, Swati Kumar, has also shared similar feedback, and I strongly identify with her sentiments regarding the adult classes at the British Swim School.

UPDATE (10/25)
The manager and the customer service team contacted me to inquire about my dissatisfaction with the classes and to understand why I perceived the cancellation policy as questionable. They also offered me the option to receive a refund for the month's fees if I wished to discontinue the classes. I genuinely appreciate their efforts to address the problem and enhance their business. I now feel more at ease and no longer perceive any issues with their services.

British swim school has a lot of good instructors and they rotate locations. I had a class at Embassy suites in Burlingame and my boys had George teaching them. I HAD to leave a review for instructor George! He is great! He teaches so well. I watched him instructing both my boys with clear verbal and visual instructions. He has a serious but not scary demeanor. With one reminder, the kids listen and paid attention. Instructors like him make it worth the money.

!!!! SCAM ALERT!!!! THIS PLACE IS A TOTAL SCAM, DO NOT JOIN AND WASTE YOUR MONEY.

I would give this place 0 stars if possible. This review is for adult swimming instructions, but reading some of the other reviews, I could easily relate to them. TL;DR: There is nothing positive about this place, it is overpriced (54$ a class) and they provide zero value and are super disrespectful. So basically a scam. Here is my experience:
1. Class 1: 4 students, all varying levels wanting to learn different things, swimming in 2 half lanes, with the instructor spending 2 minutes per student at one time. Learned: Nothing
2. Class 2: Similar story. Asked to teach me breaststroke, after 4 minutes said that I can watch a YouTube video. Learned: Nothing
3. Class 3: Between class 2 and 3, I spent about a week with friends on a lake and practiced my freestyle and learned to tread water. In this class I asked to learn how to tread eggbeater style, pool was too shallow, so we gave up and I just practiced laps. Learned: Nothing, but at least I got to make the use of the pool
4. Class 4: Asked to transition from freestyle to backstroke. There was just 1 other person, this was probably the best class so far. Learned: Some basics of backstroke
5. Class 5: I was fortunate to get the same instructor as class 4, she was the most diligent of them all and gave me tips on how to improve my stroke and practiced my kicks. Learned: Some more basics of backstroke.

Disrespectful behavior: At the end of class 5, the instructor saw my passion and dedication for learning and was like you can stay for 10 more mins and practice the stroke. I was very respectful, and was only using half a lane. There was no activity in that lane. 5 mins later a management person says that my lesson is done and I need to get out of the pool. I counter saying that I will do so after a couple of more laps and I have permission from the instructor to stay for 5 more mins. She said she will verify it with the instructor (disrespect #1: not believing me), and I said no problem. She walks over to her manager and snitches on me. The manager comes over and says I need to vacate the pool as another class is about to begin. Not wanting to inconvenience anyone else, I get out. But here's the kicker -- THERE WAS NO OTHER CLASS. SHE STRAIGHT UP LIED TO MY FACE (disrespect #2). Then I try to talk to another "manager" basically trying to tell them that the pool is STILL empty and I could've just practiced my strokes and nothing would have changed, and instead of letting me practice or even just acknowledging the error of their ways she keeps repeating the same line over and over: "I apologize for the miscommunication, but the policy is only for 30 mins class". There was NO ONE else in the class, the lane was empty and I was like this is just illogical. But she was a robot, unwilling to treat me like a human being.

Great school with wonderful coaches. When my little one refused to get into the water, coach Nicole did an outstanding job to understand what he was concerned about, connected with him in a playful manner and got him into the water. He had a great time and completed all parts of the class with Nicole's guidance.

My son made consistent progress at British swim. Convenient location even if you live in the city - right off of 101.

Our son has been taking classes for over 2 years now. There are tons of pool options and available time slots. They are flexible with rescheduling makeups around sickness or travel. The teachers have all been good with kids.

I enrolled my 10 years old grandson to this school starting July 18 for two weeks intensive class. On the first day arriving the pool I already knew he is at a higher level as all other are about 3-5 years old don't even know how to float. I immediately talked to the coordinator there and he said it is alright for they would make an assessment on the first day and put him into the appropriate class. After that class he said he would talk to the office to have class changed. When I called the office the gentleman there said he didn't get any notice but offered to change it to a class starting August 1st, but he needs to get back to the poolside coordinator to confirm it. I was told to go back to the poolside again the next morning to have the coordinator to reconfirm with the office. The next day I waited for half hour at the poolside and the coordinator didn't show up. Then I talked to the office again and this time a lady said they couldn't change to August 1st but offered to have a higher level class at the original schedule but 45 minutes later. As my grandson has a tennis camp booked I told her I could not change but August 1st is ok for whatever time they have. From there it gets ugly, they become very rigid and insisted there is no way to accommodate, either I have to take a later time class the same schedule for two weeks and that is the only option, there is no refund at all. So the end story is I spent over $400 dollar, with my grandson taking one 45 minute class of floating in the water for four times each lasted about 3 minutes, unless I have to bring him back to do the same thing over for another 7 session, which of course, is a total waste of time. This school is running not to help kids to improve their swimming, they just want you to enroll and get your money.

I feel like I just wasted $1k. The 24 Hour Ocean location is disgusting with black mold on the walls. So I’ve been trying to schedule makeups in other locations. I have 2 kids taking classes at different levels and scheduling a makeup at another location at the same time is extremely challenging. Also, I made a request to have a female instructor for my 4 year old who wouldn’t participate during another lesson because the instructor was male and unfortunately the company wouldn’t accommodate. I’m going back to La Petit Baleen or Anderson Swim School. Lesson learned.

This swimming school is really good. The pool is very clean and well maintained. The instructors are friendly caring and their training method is very well designed and professional. We are very satisfied with British Swimming school as our daughter is learning in the best way.
