Our kids have been taking lessons here for a few month and have learned so much and are so comfortable in the water now. The teachers are amazing. Teacher George has been great with our son and has amazing patience when teaching. We are excited to continue lessons here.

We started sending our 5-year old to the San Mateo location in July of this year. This is the first time he has been in organized swim lessons although he’s splashed around in the shallow end of pools in the past.
The School offers a variety of times across the different levels, which makes it easy to fit into our schedules. We especially like that we can send him both Saturday and Sunday mornings. The classes are structured with specific skills to master in each level and the instructors are patient, encouraging, and clear in how they teach. In particular, Noah was great when our son was in Starfish and George has been fantastic in the Turtles I class.
Our son loves going to swim and seeing himself progress through the skills. It’s also been a really good opportunity to discuss and work through with him the concepts of failure (ie you aren’t going to know how to do it at first and it takes time to be good) and the importance of practice and putting in your best effort.
We plan to continue sending him to classes until he finishes Shark II or decides he’s done with swim!

My kid has been swimming at the San Mateo 24 Hour Fitness for a while, and today’s lesson with teachers Noah and George and the on-deck person Kai was amazing! Kai gave really helpful tips that made a big difference and the teachers were so encouraging and knowledgeable. My kid’s swimming improved so much just from today’s session.

My son has been at San Mateo British Swim School for a year and four months and he just reached Shark 1. He could not have done it without the wonderful teachers including George, Alexa, Maddie, Rowen, and Kai. They are patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in each child’s progress.
Turtle 2 is where San Mateo really stood out for us. That was the stage when they worked on his breaststroke in depth and even had a class dedicated to getting his treading form right. The focus and care during that time gave him the confidence to move forward into the higher levels.
If you are looking for a place that combines safety, skill-building, and encouragement, San Mateo British Swim School is an excellent choice. My son looks forward to class, and we enjoy seeing how much he continues to grow as a swimmer.

My kid had a good time in there. We went there when she turned 3.
It took her a couple of months to get acquainted, but after that she enjoyed the classes. We had classes or admin encounters with Eddie, Madi, Kai, Rowan, Josh, and George. All good and helpful.
One thing I wish they did was showing the teachers' names on the app, ideally in advance. I realized my kid works much better with some of the teachers and knowing who will teach a session helps a lot for scheduling makeup classes.

Our son is Deaf and has special needs. Some of the swim instructors know ASL and all of them are wonderful at encouraging and motivating my 4yr old and 1.5yr old at improving their swim and survival skills. My 4yr old has been attending British Swim since he was less than 1yr old. Shout out to teachers Kai, Noah, George, and (others I forgot their names!), but they're just wonderful with the kids! Thank you all for building confidence in my two little ones!

After a brief break from British Swim School in San Mateo, I promptly returned once I found out our favorite instructor, Dylan, was back from break. My daughter was plateauing at the other location and she wasn’t jiving with the other instructors.
After just 20 minutes with Dylan on our first class back, Sammie was rolling her head and breathing for freestyle (vs months at the prior location). Dylan has a way of instructing where my daughter just gets it. He’s kind, patient and fun where my daughter actually can’t wait for her next swim class.
Thank you Dylan for being a great instructor.

We are thrilled to share our wonderful experience with British Swim School. Our son Aiden has truly thrived here, showing remarkable progress that we hadn’t seen at other swim schools. Starting as a Starfish, he advanced to Turtle 2 in just two months! The teaching approach at British Swim School is excellent, and every instructor we’ve worked with has been outstanding. They create a warm, positive atmosphere, showing kindness, patience, and dedication to each child’s progress.
A few improvements that can be made are: The pool is super cold most of the time. The playtime at the end of class. While a short playtime can be fun for kids, especially in the last 5 minutes, I’ve noticed that some instructors start it bit earlier. With a full class, this can sometimes mean that kids don’t get as much time to work on learning and polishing skills. For classes at the Turtle 1 level and above, it may be beneficial to extend the instructional time and focus more on skill development. Also, there are way too many kids in Turtle 2 classes with very limited classes availability.
Special thanks to teachers Kai, Jamie, Josh, Zoey, George, Kaitlyn, Nicky, Leah and Anthony-though I’m sure I’m missing a few names, as we’ve worked with so many talented instructors! Each of them brought unique skills and approaches that truly made a difference in Aiden’s learning journey. British Swim School has not only given Aiden invaluable swimming skills but has also made every lesson fun and enjoyable. We couldn’t recommend them more highly!

I am thrilled to share my experience with Teacher Sofia, who has been an outstanding swim teacher. From our very first lesson, her passion for teaching and genuine enthusiasm for swimming shone through.
Sofia has an incredible ability to connect with her students, tailoring each lesson to fit individual skill levels and ensuring everyone feels comfortable in the water. Her patience and positive reinforcement have significantly boosted my kids' confidence and technique.
The environment she creates is welcoming and supportive, making each class not only productive but also enjoyable. My 2 daughters not only improved in their swimming skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for the sport, thanks to Sofia’s expertise and encouragement.
I highly recommend Sofia to anyone looking to learn or enhance their swimming abilities. Her dedication and skill truly make her an exceptional instructor!

We've been sending our almost 4-year-old to British Swim School for the past 4-5 months, and the transformation has been incredible! He used to be afraid of going into the water, but now he looks forward to every class. His teacher, Sofia, has been a big part of that change. She is so kind, patient, and truly an excellent instructor. She knows how to make the kids feel comfortable and confident in the water, and teach them important skills. Deck staff, in particular Anthony is amazing as well. We're so grateful for Sofia's guidance and highly recommend British Swim School!

I have tried a few swim schools in the San Mateo area and hands down this one is the best in being clean, professional and super nice about makeups. The teachers are great and supportive with kids who have fear of water or anxiety. It's a very welcoming environment for the kiddos and I am super happy to have both my kids learn their swimming skills at this facility.

We have been taking our daughter to British Swim School for 3 years now and have teally enjoyed it. Our 6yo can now swim on her own which has provided us a lot of comfort when it comes to water safety. All the teachers are very good and in particular teachers George and Zoe are great. Class sizes are very small and so there’s lots of individualized attention. Would highly recommend.

We heard a lot of good things about British Swim School. That’s is why we enrolled my now 5 yo active athletic daughter who initiated herself taking swimming classes almost 6 months ago. The school indeed has tons of convenient locations and are always open, so it’s super easy to do makeup classes. Their app is fantastic! We like that they track our kid’s progress closely. However, tracking progress is one thing but nudging kids to make real progress is quite another! Unfortunately, school is a revolving door with instructors! My kid has a new instructor almost every single class. At this point, none of them gives her real challenge to do something new and exciting or even let her show what she already learned… They mostly do their daily pretty boring routine, wasting precious class time on so much talking, excessive singing, spending the last 10 min on ‘play’ (which looks more like sitting in the pool in a ring than do something interesting and acive!). So not only we don’t see any real improvements here after almost 6 (!) months of taking classes, my kid actually started to regress. She is obviously so ready and willing for more, but looks like they are more interested in keeping her down, because every new instructor starts to get to know her anew and gives her that boring routine she started from back in October 2023. Also it might look that they keep her from real progress to just make more money - the longer she sits class after clas at the basic level with the same extremely boring routine designed for much younger kids, the more classes she would need to take to achieve at least something. At this point we’re pretty disappointed with the school’s one-routine-fits-everyone-and-everytime approach, and would not recommend this school for a child who’s eager and ready to really do stuff to learn how to swim.

I think the pool at San Mateo is well managed and Run. The pool manager Rosemary has a special touch with customer focus- she knows the kids by names, is on top of where are the areas of growth and where to challenge them. We also like the teachers in the San Mateo area. While we are primarily enrolled in the Burlingame pool, we take every opportunity to schedule makeups at the San Mateo pool

I agree with a lot of reviews here. The teachers at British Swim School are caring but do come with varying degree of experience. Rosemary the manager at this location is great and we love her, however the number of kids in a class make it tough for kids to make quick progress. I have been keeping a track of the number of minutes my kid spend per class and it’s total of 6 minutes out of 25 minutes per class (last 5 minutes is play time) while she just sits out of the pool shivering rest of the time since there are 4 kids each class each instructor and there is only 1 kid allowed in the pool at a time at lower levels.
Also, Rosemary tries real hard to let each instructor know what the child needs help with - but I don’t see it being consistently told since there are lot of kids across multiple class at one time.
Also I don’t see the kid getting more time practicing the skill that they are struggling with. For example, my kid is in Minnow (one of the levels) and she has been struggling with something called as Torpedo and she literally spends 1 minute out of 6 minutes (2 turns, sometimes 1) that she is in the pool practicing this skill. With this pace, any kid will take up to a year to graduate from a class. If you are attending 1x per week at $250 per month - you are spending up to $3,000 to learn basics. I don’t think it helps with multiple classes per week either considering how the classes are set up.

My 4y/o child attends group classes at British Swim School at 24 Hour Fitness-San Mateo 3 times a week. All of the Starfish swim instructors are wonderful with the kids, excellent teachers, fun and patient.
My child, who is highly anxious and has fear of water, really loves his swim lessons and George is his favorite swim teacher.
I highly recommend British Swim School at 24 Hour Fitness-San Mateo to my neighbors.

This review is for the staff at the San Mateo location. My child started the program as a toddler and she continues to enjoy being in the water and learning today. My child’s teachers are absolute professionals when it comes to working with children of all learning styles. My child’s teachers are caring and they always provide support with me on my child’s progress. The staff really know each child’s goals, comfort level and swim profile and I truly appreciate the consistency in their teaching with each lesson. My child continues to improve and it is all thanks to the supportive staff of San Mateo.

the swim instructors as well as the manager are kind, friendly and they are passionate about what they do. My son was looking forward to each class. There are at least two instructors in the pool watching the kids and one ( or more) on the deck observing and correcting the strokes. I could not expect anything more. It is worth it.
