I’ve been training with Dave and Joe since before they even opened CMA, and it’s been amazing to see how much they’ve grown the gym. Their attention to detail and the way they run things really set the tone, and you can see it in the coaches they’ve developed — Xyler, Brandon, Tina, and Eric have all leveled up not just as fighters but as instructors too.
Being at this gym has gotten me through some rough times, including losing family, and Dave and Joe were incredibly supportive throughout it all. Training here has kept me grounded and sharp — especially since I also compete regularly as a dancer. The energy at CMA is always solid, and it’s a space built by people who genuinely care about you and your growth. Definitely one of the best places to train and be part of a real community.

Terrible coach attitude, he wasn’t friendly at all and didn’t let me train because I was too « beginner ». I then asked why it is stated on the website, "just arrive 5 minutes before any class" which he then got agitated about.

Xyler is an incredible Muay Thai instructor! Every session is challenging, motivating. He takes time to break things down clearly and pushes you to improve while keeping it fun and supportive. I’ve learned so much and always leave class feeling stronger and more confident. Highly recommend training with him if you want real progress and great energy!

This is the best Muay Thai gym you could find in the Bay Area! Joining CMA was the best decision I could make 3 years ago. The coaches are very knowledgeable about Muay Thai and genuinely care about their students. Along with the members of the gym, they have fostered a special community where people build lasting connections with each other through the sport. The classes are well designed, from the introduction to Muay Thai culture and the art of striking to leveling up your fight games, everyone walking into that door will find something that fits their needs and interests. Speaking from a female perspective, CMA offers a very safe and welcoming space for women to learn about Muay Thai and workout. I’d encourage anyone to check it out if you are in the area!

There are so many great things to say about CMA. All the coaches are incredibly knowledgeable and push you without creating a hostile environment. I've learned a lot at CMA, improved my fitness, and made lasting connections with people at the gym.
Stepping into a Muay Thai gym can be intimidating, but everyone here is extremely friendly and respectful. This is one of the best gyms in the Bay Area, and I'm always glad about my decision to join CMA!

I mean, this is really a five star place if nothing gets in the way of the course, and you fit in, ... I'm so ready for kickboxing that I want to wait outside and take notes on the sequences... But without the income, I might as well be some mutant from the sewers. There's no romantic 'go for it!' mindset, only feeling I'm not welcome, and naturally confused, seek an explanation " the incongruence with my expectations from what one who looks like you should behave, and your overly polite behavior offends me in a similar way that a person with a face transplant offends the average person's sensibilities, or transgender with features of hot woman confuse and offend the average hetero male... so take your two cards you use to pay and ... I dunno, die somewhere from what this course could have prevented."
..and that you have to pull out an extra card sometimes to pay...gross"
Nobody said a word like this, but it's how I felt.

Look no more, this is an amazing gym. If you want to learn, grow and improve, this is the place for that. As a soccer coach and school teacher myself, I can tell you that the instructors are what top tier coaches/mentors/teachers should be. They are masters of their craft. I admire and have learned so much from Coach Dave & Joe (along with Coach Xyler, Eric, Brandon). They've held me down the past 3 years and I don't plan on going anywhere else. You'll be in great hands. From the coaches to the community, CMA all day!

California Martial Arts has been a fantastic place for my daughter to learn Muay Thai.
The fact that they offer classes for kids three days a week has provided her with a consistent and engaging learning experience. She’s been having a blast exploring different styles and techniques, making each session not only educational but also fun.
The instructors’ commitment to creating a positive and enjoyable environment is evident, and it’s reassuring to see my daughter thriving and enjoying her martial arts journey at California Martial Arts.

Couldn’t ask for anything more in a Muay Thai / boxing gym:
- great coaches who are knowledgeable, passionate, entertaining, and friendly
- awesome community full of chill yet competitive people willing to help, very welcoming atmosphere
- well-structured classes that always offer new teachings regardless of your level
Overall I can’t think of anything bad to say about this gym and would 100% recommend it to anyone at any level.
This review is based off of my my personal experience after consistently attending classes on a weekly basis for about a year. I honestly looked forward to every class and came out of each with a drenched shirt and happy mood ✊

I've been training with Dave and Joe for more than six years, and I will follow their lead to the grave. Since I first started training, I was able to learn the basics from how to have a fight stance, to competing in six bouts across California. California Martial Athletics is a one of a kind experience, where everyone is welcome (with a good attitude please) and growth in Muay Thai is just the beginning.
I highly encourage anyone who has expressed some interest in Muay Thai, to train at CMA because of the team's level of expertise and personalization provided to each member. The knowledge and passion for the sport are extremely evident in each class, to the point where you will more than likely want to train 6 six days a week.

This is one of the best gyms I've ever trained at! Dave and Joe are AWESOME - they're caring, professional, and each brings his own unique style to provide a really well-rounded program. My technique and cardio improved a lot during my time here, and on top of that it's such a fun, friendly atmosphere.

Joined this gym when I moved to San Francisco! Authentic Muay Thai school and they have a very talented fight team. Coaches Dave and Joe are some good peeps and they go above and beyond for their students. This gym is good for all levels. They sell all the gear at the gym if you need anything for training as well.

CMA is a great place to train with very dedicated coaches who teach authentic Muay Thai. This is definitely not the cardio-kickboxing type of gym and has a very technical approach, but I'm sure your cardio will be tested. They offer classes, but also have a fight team, consisting of some very skilled fighters. All of whom are warm and friendly people, just like the gym's vibe!

I started practicing Muay Thai a little over a year ago under Coach Dave Engel's instruction, and I couldn't have asked for a better mentor as a complete beginner.
Dave is clearly extremely passionate about the sport and has dedicated his life to it, and you can also tell that he genuinely enjoys teaching it to others. Moreover, he is very good at observing errors and clearly articulating corrections, which is extremely helpful to anyone, I'm sure, but especially if you are new to martial arts. Better yet, he's a genuinely nice guy.
Same goes for Coach Joe Chernay. Joe radiates good cheer and humor, and it's pretty hard not to have fun or laugh when he gets going. Just like Dave, you can tell that Joe loves martial arts like a kid loves Christmas, and he's equally stoked to pass that joy on to his students. He's also got a ton of knowledge that he eagerly shares.
Before Covid, you could enjoy training at the gym on Polk Street. For now, you can receive quality instruction and an excellent workout with them on the field at Kezar Stadium on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Just bring gloves, wraps, water, a good attitude and work ethic!

Dave and Joe were my first Muay Thai coaches when I started the sport 8 years ago. I’m glad they finally have their own place to spread the art of Muay Thai.
Both Dave and Joe have a wealth of knowledge. Not only did they build a strong foundation with me, I also had them train both my kids in Muay Thai. Their attention to detail will help develop a fundamental understand of the sport and is perfect for all ages and skill level.
