I was a member at Cañada College Athletic Center for about a year before I started medical school. The facility is impressive, clean, modern, and has all the equipment you need for a solid workout.

Unfortunately, my experience with the management was extremely disappointing. The manager, an older gentleman I believe named Rich, enforced policies in an inflexible, black-and-white manner. On one occasion, I asked to work out under a family member’s active membership while I was home as a student for the holidays, and staff previously confirmed that this would be acceptable. My family member even spoke to him on the phone to clarify, yet he still refused without offering any explanation or reasonable alternative, despite knowing I had been a member before.

For a gym that closes as early as 8:30 pm on weekdays and 5:30 on weekends, and still has regular blackout maintenance periods, sometimes due to power or equipment problems, the rigid approach from staff feels unnecessary and discouraging. Trying to cancel a membership was almost impossible, and staff repeatedly gave conflicting or incorrect information. No one seemed willing to take responsibility or provide real help.

The facility itself is excellent, and I understand that policies need to exist, but the customer experience should not feel like dealing with a government agency. This is a gym, not the DMV. Basic flexibility and professional customer service should not be too much to ask. If you value clear communication and management that can adapt to real life circumstances, this may not be the best choice.

I was really excited to join this new gym, but after just a few visits, I’m already reconsidering my decision. The space is nice and the equipment looks great in theory, but it’s so overcrowded that actually using anything is a challenge.
Even during non-peak hours, it's packed. Machines are constantly taken, there’s barely room in the weight area, and it feels like the gym sold way more memberships than it can realistically handle.
For a new facility, I expected better planning and member experience. Unless they make changes to manage the crowd, like limiting memberships or adding more equipment, I don’t see how this is sustainable. They also have some weird rules and hours of operation that are definitely frustrating. By reading the other reviews, sounds like I’ll also have to hustle to cancel my membership …

Although the facility is really nice and easy to get to, the way the facility operates/managed is horrible.

Firstly, the membership is sssooooooo expensive, especially for a community college (like come on this isn’t Stanford or Yale,) $87 per month for a gym that isn’t even open all day, let alone closes way too early on weekends at 5:30pm is absolutely unacceptable and a waste of peoples membership money.
Secondly, the equipment isn’t always maintained by the maintenance staff, they rely on the members to clean after themselves, which is the sanitary action to do so, but at the most the management staff should be continually walking around and cleaning/organizing the equipment, and checking that the wet napkins are always filled. At least buy some new gym mats. All the staff does is just sit at their desk and watch instagram reels or YouTube all day.
Thirdly, the power to the gym is always non-stable. It goes off and on and the management doesn’t jump quickly to solve it. They just let everyone go, and hope that power miraculously comes back on.
Fourthly, the showers are always either out of soap, not functioning properly, or not always cleaned throughout the day.
Last but not least, not a lot of people follow the rules of equipment, they say 30 min max but there are people who sit with their phones out and not do anything, or groups of teenagers that barely know how to lift a pound and are wearing pajamas to the gym.

The gym needs to hire an actually gym experienced management team, and train or fire the current staff.

Love the gym..... hate the showers (dirty stalls, frequently out of soap in the dispensers , always some broken small fixture somewhere, clogged drains causing minor flooding into the walkway between showers and making the stall disgustingly flooded.) I've stopped showering there.

Gym membership is affordable if you prefer to take group classes. The open gym, however, is very small and limited equipment. The gym gets crowded and it seems peak hours run throughout all times of the day because you have the retirees and students taking up the day schedule and then young professionals who come after 5. There really is no “low time” to go and very hard to get on a machine. I’ve waited 10 minutes for a treadmill (there’s only 9 total) and other times I don’t get to use a specific weight machine because of high traffic, people sitting/texting on the machine, or there is just limited amounts (one) of popular/high-use machines.

I prefer to take the community classes and they offer up a wide range of options (TRX, yoga, pilates, dance). However, signing up is a pain as there is no app and you have to log in to your account through a web browser to book. It would be nice if they had an app and actually took attendance to curb people who come in last minute without booking and to actually penalize no-shows for taking spots. A lot of classes like the yoga, pilates, and dance are overcrowded and not enough space for everyone. They need to offer up more classes to accommodate the bandwidth.

The gym overall is clean and better than their north location I checked out. I wish more instructors encouraged students to wipe down the mats and equipment after use though.

Lastly, class schedules are updated monthly so another downside is that just as I get into a routine a class will be removed from the schedule. Wish they kept to a more seasonal schedule.

****update: Had to lower my rating further since cancelling membership is impossible. The front desk isn’t trained on what the policy is and gives false information. And they give you contact information to people who don’t respond. Had to get credit card company involved.

Great facilities, but the continued reductions in available times for community members has led me to look elsewhere for a gym. It's very difficult to find times which fit my schedule, and even when I do, those times are very crowded due to the other time slots having been taken away. The fact that they make these hours changes arbitrarily and without warning (their latest one is still not reflected on their website) makes it seem all the more autocratic.

If you're a student, it's a fantastic facility and you should make use of it. If you're a community member, you should be very sure their hours will work for you and that you don't mind having to wait for equipment.

Takes them days to start a membership and a month to cancel. Front desk gives incorrect information on this process. Restricted hours. Wish there were better options in RWC.

I wish there was a jacuzzi and steam room, but no complaints this place is awesome! The views we inspiring. Feels like a very high end gym, but a quarter of the cost. Classes fill up faster than ideal.

At first, things were great. The gym is obviously brand new and beautiful. But, over the past two years they have been increasingly restricting member use. They only disclose a blackout period of 2pm-4pm Monday thru Friday in their membership agreement and marketing materials. Now they restrict equipment use from 11am-12:30p Monday-Thur and additonally 6pm-7:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The equipment unavailability is not worth the cost of membership. When we asked can we use the equipment if available during class, they said they would remove our membership.

Buyer beware. We cancelled our membership because access for paying members is even more restrictive. it's super crowded too. What started as black out periods where access for students only from 2 to 4 Monday through Friday extended to blackout periods for fitness classes for students at peak hours Monday through Thursday. In my opinion the Canada Staff also has no regard for paid membership.

I have recently moved out of San Mateo county and have attempted to cancel my membership at this gym. There is no way to do so online. When I have called to cancel over the phone I have been told to email their membership person. I have been given the wrong email twice. I have now been charged for two months when I have not been able to access the gym. They need to create a way for members to cancel online or

We have signed up a couple of months ago and it was great. Since the it became overpopulated. Group classes are full, oversubscribed, you have to wait to get to the equipments such as weight machines and treadmill. It is not a big facility (huge square footage but the equipment park is on the smaller side) and clearly cannot handle the crowd which kind of killed the experience. Sadly looking elsewhere :(
