bad management that is rarely ever present. the front desk people are all wonderful but can do very little to help with your membership. The YMCA website portal is also almost always down for this region. Good luck getting anything resolved in a meaningful way. Will not be going back

The swimming pool is very nice to swim in. There's quite a bit of shade in that outdoor pool area. So you're at less risk to burn in the hot sun.

Update: 06/10/25: thereβs currently only one spa area open, due to the other one needing some repairs done.
front desk is always super friendly. its very spacious. the athletic place before ymca took over had a sperate spa area (steam room/sauna/hot tub) for the men and women, which I preferred. now theyre both co-ed, except one is for the adults and one is "family spa". as of 02/03/25 the steam rooms arent running and the hot tubs are being worked on. theres plenty of weight and cardio equipment. the mens locker room was very spacious but a few weeks ago, they cut it in half and are utilizing the other half as a stretching area. i do wish the lockers were a little wider or the same size as the lockers in the midtown location, along with shampoo in the showers. the pool is closed at the moment. if you want coffee with their keurig machine, it is $2 a pod. they only have street parking.

Many of these reviews regard Capital Athletic Club, which owned this facility for years and closed December 2023. Since then, YMCA has taken over and it's not the same facility at all. Caveat emptor. Seriously.

I used to be a member at CAC and really enjoyed it. I recently utilized a 3-day pass at what is now the YMCA and I have mixed feelings about it. I only utilized the weight rooms. There are three weight rooms and it feels really disjointed. There aren't any TVs, background music or windows in the weight rooms downstairs. They do, however, have more than enough machines and weights to get a good workout in. BUT - be forewarned.... they do not have a stair-stepper machine.
The membership fees are $70 for a single adult and there is no parking validation. In reality, with parking fees, this amount is easily more like $100+ with regular gym use. They have a pool, basketball court, and group classes, but at potentially $100+ monthly, it didn't feel like a luxury facility.
The staff was just as pleasant as with CAC. It felt like the YMCA tried to separate themselves just enough from the old CAC, but I don't think it was enough. I don't mind the community feel, but I think the price point needs to come down a bit to offset the parking fees. I hope it succeeds, and hopefully there is an actual remodel of the facility. There is a lot of potential with this fitness center.

I don't think they know what audience they are trying to cater to here. They've downsized across all dimensions, less amenities, less access, yet charge like its a luxury gym with over $70/mo.
The layout of the weightroom(s) is the least logical way to set up a gym, just take a tour to find out what I mean. You feel completely cramped doing a single set of exercises by yourself, let alone with a partner or someone to join you. You will be in someone's way no matter what due to this poorly planned layout that also has a tripping hazard within 3 ft of the door in the room with squat racks. Why would you put the squat racks in the front of the room if they have a tripping hazard? It makes no sense. -- Why would you have the heaviest set of free weight closest to the door with the most foot traffic, adding anxiety for the folks squatting and individuals going around them just to do another free weight exercise.
When I want to play basketball, the quality of the balls are maybe 2/10 at the best. They appear recycled, found on the street, dry, dirty, old. Zero grip. That's half the reason I have this membership, but it's basically forgotten about now.
The steam rooms were great at CAC, and then they didn't clean them once YMCA got the building. For 3 months they were inoperable, and now they smell like a wet dog, literally gagging as you open the door and the smell hits you. I recommended eucalyptus spray to keep in there like CAC did as they understood how to approach these problems. What are you guys doing?
When you go find a drinking fountain, the fountain piece where the water comes out is dirty, gross, uncleaned and has been since the 'grand' opening. What are you doing as a business? Honestly, how low of standards do you have? It's pretty obvious the management doesn't use the gym themselves, or else it wouldn't be like this in the first place. Truly all of the amenities they offer are less than a 2/10 in quality.
Brand new equipment doesn't matter to anyone enough when diverse sets of 5, 10 year old equipment works the same.
The quality of the establishment shouldn't be dictated by the most simple tenets of hospitality like "nice staff!!", "new equipment!!". If a gym charging $70 a month doesn't have nice staff and good equipment as a base of their business, they won't succeed, as we see here.
Music doesn't even play in the building. You walk around feeling like you're in a corporate hall awaiting your next meeting, but everyone is trying to work out. It is incredibly isolating compared to what a gym should be, let alone YMCA, let alone $70 a month.
Planet fitness for $10 has a better set of amenities for the price.
Whoever planned the opening didn't do a good job. Whoever planned the layout didn't do a good job. Whoever greenlighted the gutting of all amenities to 2/10 quality, why?
I'm embarrassed to have been so excited about this location being used for a gym again after CAC closed. Clearly, YMCA has fallen in quality or they don't care. I truly don't think they care.

Nice gym with downtown location. Really odd and illogical weight room setup, however. Why have two rooms of weights and then upstairs there's another room of weight machines? It would make more sense to have all of the weights in one area, on one floor.

Overall, the club is nice, and I like the new equipment in the cardio room, and I don't mind that the weight room is different now than how it used to be when this location was still CAC.
However, at the price of the membership, I'd expect basic things like body wash & shampoo to be supplied in the showers, since showers are available. Towels would also be nice, but that's not a dealbreaker. I feel like at least soap/shampoo in the showers is not asking much though, again, especially at the price point. Maybe put a blow dryer in that area as well (this also used to be provided, as well as tissues/kleenex, but that's all gone too). It's very basic now. And I don't know if I came at a bad time, but the water in the shower took FOREVER to heat up.
Also, the sauna/steam room areas used to be separated by gender, but now they seem to be coed, which I don't really understand. I used to be a member of Capital Athletic, and I would only consider getting a membership here if they at least brought back body wash & shampoo in the showers to use, as well as separating the sauna/steam room areas again.

Capital YMCA has the same charm that Capital Athletic Club once had - friendly staff, nice equipment, locker rooms, sauna, steam room, shower stalls, and pool. The single membership is more affordable than what I used to pay for the CAC, but you lose some of the nicer benefits.
Cons:
-Capital YMCA does not validate parking like CAC used to do. Downtown parking can be hard to find next to the gym and the City does not have free parking on the weekend anymore, so be prepared to pay $3-$7 for metered parking depending on the length of your stay.
-The men's and women's locker rooms have a sauna/steam room/hot tub area on the 1st floor. These areas used to be separated by gender, but they appear to be coed now. The genders were separated under CAC management. It used to say "Women Only" on the outer door, but that sign has been removed. I don't know why they removed it because there are shower stalls next to the hot tub, and I can't imagine using those if men are in there.
-The women's locker room on the 2nd floor is still the same, but they don't provide the complimentary shower soap, shampoo, and conditioner like CAC did.
-Pool is closed until March 2025 for maintenance.
-Coffee shop on the 1st floor is permanently closed. They have a keurig machine there now, but you have to pay for the K-cups.
-The old weight room was converted to an art shop which is a separate business. The weights have been moved to two smaller rooms.
The YMCA is a diverse community. I love seeing the elders get a workout. There are more kids coming out too. Eventually, there will be a "kids club" area in the gym which is nice.
Overall, I'd rate this place 4/5 stars. If they validated parking, fixed the pool, and separated the sauna/steam room by gender, I'd give it 5/5.

Went on a tour... First off, I was totally impressed with the group class offerings... Nothing in the area compares.
Because of an experience with a locker/shower room when I was taking scuba lessons at a different chain, as well as when I was a member at another national chain "no judgment" gym, I'm waaaaay focused on how clean facilities are, especially the showers and locker rooms... Totally impressed!!! Was there pieces of paper and random stuff like there here and there? Yes. That's normal usage when people are too lazy to pick up after themselves... I'm talking about no black mold, nasty smells, overflowing trash, etc, etc, etc...
I signed up that day.

Absolutely in love with this place! So much more than a gym. It's not so crowded that I have to wait to use the weights or machines. Plenty of floor space all throughout the facility for stretching or lifting weights in the mirror. Im rather new to working out but the staff and patrons here make me feel so comfortable, not in the least bit intimidated. If you're looking for a comfortable place with plenty of extra activities then this is the place for you!

Hands down the best gym in the Sacramento area, although the prices are higher than average keep in mind you get unlimited towel service, clean areas with around the clock janitorial service, one of the only gyms with a large steam room and sauna for both men and women, as well as you get amazing personal trainers like Tyler, super friendly staff, Parking Garage access or street parking, a two story complex featuring basketball court, pool, jacuzzis, Large Cardio and weight rooms, plenty of space to wonder and do your stretches. The building also has an awesome hair cutting salon. There is also a private conference room. You can also get a daily laundry service included in your 2nd tier membership!

Great place, I personally go here for the spa. Aside from the old white guy that looks like Jesus and doesnβt honor personal space what so ever (I sat down to check a message on my phone away from the spa area mind you, and this guy walks right up in front of me with his junk 6 inches from my face to kindly remind me that there are no phones allowed in the spa areaβ¦ cool dude, now get your shriveled thing away from me please and go monitor the hallways), I would say itβs a pretty relaxing place.
Great pool, large steam and dry sauna, and also whirlpool. If communal showers bother you then this isnβt your place. For the most part aside from the occasional nuance, itβs awesome. Staff members are genuine, and facilities are relatively clean for the age of the buildings.
Thumbs up.

I joined this athletic club a few months ago and really like it. The staff is GREAT!! Everyone is professional and friendly and they always welcome you by your name. The amenities are plentiful and I love that they have a pool! My cons: itβs an old church/ school with a gym and thatβs exactly what it looks like inside. They use the old podiums for shelving and the upstairs corridors look like a typical dark hallway with conference rooms, which are now workout rooms. Itβs dark and drab and is in serious need of a makeover since it seems to be stuck in 1984 and I should know since I was in high school then π±. The music they play is old rock, again someone is stuck in a time warp. Itβs not very uplifting or energetic so bring your earbuds and playlist. Having said all that, the equipment is new and current. There are multiple rooms for various classes and exercises. So overlook the old outdated style and itβs a great gym, which is really why Iβm there anyway. I would recommend this place.

Capitol athletic club is an amazing experience.
I feel blessed to have the privilege of being a member. I have a limited membership which has worked perfect for me because I only come to town twice a month. While Iβm here I have time to kill and look forward every time I come
And have the best workouts here in my life. Very relaxing too, unlimited clean towels, I feel like a king every time I enter the place and leave especially with the free parking validation and the shuttle. Hands down best kept secret athletic club in Sacramento.
I highly recommend at least going in and asking for a free three day trial pass, you wonβt regret it. Staff is awesome. Sincerely,
