I’m doing both open training and handstand training here, and the experience has been outstanding. The community is incredibly welcoming and supportive — you feel the positive vibe the moment you walk in. Alex is a phenomenal coach. I originally came just to learn a basic handstand and picked it up much faster than I expected. Now the structured programming is taking my skills to completely new levels. The progress is real, the environment is motivating, and I genuinely love training here. Abcheck

I've been taking handstand classes with Alex at the Center for Balanced Training for the past couple of months, and wow—what a game-changer! As someone totally intimidated by going upside down, Alex's coaching has been transformative. He's incredibly patient, breaks down techniques into digestible steps, and spots form tweaks before you even notice.
The gym is a haven for balance work. It's spacious, well equipped with mats and props, and always spotless. Alex's energy keeps sessions fun, challenging, and motivating for beginners like me. I've progressed from wall-assisted holds, to actually being able to balance without touching the wall for a few seconds, all thanks to his expert guidance.
If you're curious about handstands, sign up. Highly recommend Alex and the Center for Balanced Training. 5 stars!

Take the handstand class with Alex— Sundays at 10am!!! I’m super new to calisthenics and never took a handstand class but he made it so fun. We started with warm ups and even though others were more athletic than me, he made it very beginner friendly! My confidence by the end of the class was beaming and I’m really glad I gave it a shot! Can’t recommend this class enough & thank you Alex for making the space comfortable and fun!

Amazing coaching, amazing facility! 5 stars all around. If you are looking to improve mobility, strength, flexibility, or just for some fun, these workshops and classes are a must. A totally unique gym with tons of fun calisthenics equipment not seen elsewhere (ropes, rings, tightropes, etc.).

Great space and gym facility! This gym is not one that has the traditional workout machines but is more focused on handstands and calisthenics with the use of floor mats, bars, ropes and parallel bars. It is a real gym! Ideal location very quiet and spacious all you need for the best focus and clarity.
Located in the fourth level on the big building called the Gym. Love it!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My experience at the Center for Balanced Training has been nothing short of amazing. From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed by both the friendly staff and the members — it truly feels like a supportive community rather than just a place to work out.

The gym itself is incredibly clean, calm, and inviting — a total breath of fresh air compared to the crowded, impersonal vibe of most commercial gyms in San Diego. The atmosphere here is relaxed yet focused, making it easy to stay consistent and motivated.

A special shoutout to Alex, my trainer, who has been instrumental in helping me align my fitness goals with a personalized training plan. He has a real talent for listening, understanding your needs, and clearly explaining what steps you need to take to get where you want to be — all in a way that’s approachable and easy to follow.

If you’re looking for a gym that prioritizes quality over hype, where you can truly grow and feel supported, this is it. Highly recommended!

Coming from a background in OCR’s and boxing, I definitely didn’t expect to be as intrigued or challenged by Alex’s handstand class as I was. He really made the whole learning process a challenging and fun time. Really cool to learn something new and be in such a positive, workout friendly group environment. This guy knows his stuff!!

After years of passively trying to develop my handstand in yoga, I decided 2025 would be the year that I would put in consistent handstand work. I first came here for a weekend Handstand workshop in December (which blew my mind with mobility & strength drills that I never thought about that would help), then threw myself into weekly classes with coach Alex.

The space is huge, and has lots of toys! Rings, bars, bands, weights, boxes, sticks. It's like an adult playground!

Within two months, I am able to kick-up, hold a split-leg handstand, a tuck, and when I'm lucky, finally get into a full handstand. Alex is knowledgable, fun, approachable, and very encouraging. His drills are spot on, and offers very specific cues that make all the difference. It's now May, and I'm so grateful for how far I've come already! Excited to keep going! Would definitely recommend Alex and his Wednesday AM class, or his Sunday donation class to anyone who desires handstand results.

They also offer lots of strength training classes. This place is the real deal.

I’ve been a member of Center for Balanced Training for over a decade. In that time, I’ve had kids—and thanks to CBT, my dad bod has evolved into a true father figure. Alex’s personalized programming has been a game changer, pushing both my strength and physique to the next level. This place isn’t just a gym—it’s a community and a catalyst for lasting transformation.

Center For Balanced Training is such an amazing gym! Whether you are focusing on strength training, mobility, calisthenics, etc. CBT has it all. Wherever you are on your fitness journey, this gym has the tools, equipment, and people you need to push yourself closer to your goals. Special shout out to my personal trainer Alex who has not only created a detailed and personalized workout routine that updates as I progress but takes the time teach me about proper dieting and everything else it takes outside the gym to be the healthiest version of me. Thank you CBT and Thank you Alex!!!

Ps. The Sunday handstand classes are super fun and a great workout if you want to try something new!

Had my first session at Center for Balanced Training and I was seriously impressed. The gym has a super clean, professional vibe but still feels welcoming. Which isn’t always easy to find. The equipment is solid, and the layout makes it easy to focus without feeling crowded.

What really made the experience stand out, though, was Alex. Even on day one, he made me feel comfortable and locked in. He took the time to understand what I was trying to work on and gave me practical tips that immediately helped with my form and mindset. You can tell he knows his stuff and actually cares about helping people grow, not just physically but mentally too.

If it was this good on the first day, I can’t wait to see how much progress happens over time. Definitely recommend checking this place out, and ask for Alex if you’re looking to get dialed in from day one.

What do you not like about gyms?

For me, it's the grunty bro-ness, the people constantly checking themselves out in the mirror, the selfies, the crowds, the weird feeling like you're being watched, all of it. I hate gyms.

I love this place. CBT is a breath of fresh air. It's on the fourth floor, ironically perched atop the most PB gym imaginable, but it's not that at all. There's slack lines everywhere, rings and parallel bars, a traditional weight-lifting set up, a little bit of cardio, but tons and tons of mats and pads and bands and balls and all the things you'd ever need to improve strength and mobility in a functional way.

It's semi-private, which I believe means you need to either attend a class or that you need to be engaged with one of the trainers, but if you are seeing a trainer you can come work whenever it's open, and it's great. There's rarely more than 4 people in the room at a time, usually less. I love that part -- I almost didn't leave a review because I like how empty it is -- but this place is too cool to keep it a secret.

Alex is the best handstand teacher and here is why, he cares, he gives you drills, he’s consistent in his practice style, and he’s always accessing where you are at with your goal. I truly appreciate the care and the quality of his one on one training while i achieve my goal of a controlled handstand. I am still in my journey that i started in January and I believe I’ll meet my goal this year 🙏

Been coming to this gym for 18 years. The quality of the personal trainer Alex is beyond what most trainers do. He is personal attentive and personable always looking at how to maximize my training with me in mind, it’s not a routine that I have to fit into, It’s a routine built around me.

Gotta be the coolest gym in SD. There’s so much space for all the exercises that would be “weird” in a commercial gym - handstands, gymnastics rings, calisthenics, flexibility, and more. Training handstands, flexibility, and strength training with Alex the last 4 months has opened up a whole new community for me and it’s been great (everyone says hi and hangs around to catch up after sessions). 10/10 recommend. Cool merch too!

I’m not even sure where to begin. The quality of coaching at CBT is second to none. What started as a handstand journey became more of a life journey. Anthony has created a special space for so many people, and has drawn in exceptional trainers and athletes. It’s truly a family and community atmosphere that is inspiring , motivating, and supportive. I would drive an hour at 5 or 6am just to have a coveted hour of private training to give you some perspective on how much I value this place ! I’ve also trained and done workshops with Daniel who has incredible attention to detail and regardless of your goals will get you on the path to where you want to be. If you’re shopping for a gym look no further. This place is beyond special and it stems from the man himself, Mr. Roumell, who has poured his heart and soul into this place for decades. Proud and honored to be a part of this sacred spot !!!

This private gym is the best! I have been training here for about a year now and love the intimate space and the community<3. I've been training with Alex and have seen a lot of improvement in my fitness journey. I never did sports or physical activity growing up, so Alex has really helped me understand my specific goals through his personal programs. I've gotten stronger in my upper body, lower body, and finally gained healthy weight after 2 years of trying to gain weight.
The space has unique equipment that other commercial gyms don't have, like slack lines, stall bars, rings, and a climbing rope.
The other trainers here are amazing too. If you're looking to work on strength, flexibility, mobility, GST or even someone who specializes in women's hormone health (Joanna), there is a trainer to help you!
Every Sunday there is a handstand and flexibility class with Alex. He also does them on Wednesday's at 6:30am for the early birds.
If you're in San Diego and looking for a new space to workout in, I highly recommend coming to Sunday classes to feel out the vibes. I promise you will love it!

About a year ago I was searching for a new fitness lifestyle and a place to do it but I didn’t know what or where that was?! Then I was blessed to find out that calisthenics was calling me and the place to do it was the Center for Balance Training! The CBT is not your typical gym, it’s more like an adult playground for those who want to train for desired results versus get a workout in and checked off their list.

Alex, the CBT manager / trainer is passionate about what he does and his specialty is Hand Stand Coaching! Just give Alex a call and have him give you a tour of the facility! I work with Alex and some of the other trainers and could not be happier with them! The clientele that come and train at the CBT are just as rad as the trainers and the space. Regardless of what you’re training for, the CBT + Trainers is more than fitness…it’s friendships and a lifestyle!
