As a multi-club member for years, l've visited many City Sports locations and even had family members sign up without any issues. However, my experience at the Berkeley location was disappointing. I brought my two friends--one from Richmond and one from San Francisco--for their first gym experience and signed them up for the three-day pass. While the operational manager was kind and helpful when I called later, the newly appointed sales manager--who had dark hair, glasses, a beard, and tattoos--was surprisingly rude and extremely defensive. He didn't explain any policies and simply insisted, "It's $20 if you want to try the gym today," even after my friends explained that they were interested in memberships but wanted to try the gym first with their three day passes. He said they
"needed to sign up for memberships if they wanted to use the three day passes."
I was shocked because at other City Sports locations, the staff has always been warm, welcoming, and flexible. That was not the case here with this new sales manager. This lack of kindness and customer service was disappointing, and we ultimately left. I will not be returning to the Berkeley location. I believe the sales manager could benefit from a course on customer service and basic courtesy, as the experience was extremely disappointing. Beware to newcomers/members who want to bring a family/friend.

I’ve been taking the Zumba classes with Alejandra at Berkeley City Sports Club @ 8:30 AM, and I love it. Alejandra has a diverse and energetic style; motivating everyone to dance and have a great time. She provides excellent and easy to follow instructions with high energy and enthusiasm suitable for all levels. She also includes new, fun music and choreography to each class. I totally enjoy, get a great workout at her classes and feel more energetic after the class. I highly recommend taking a Zumba class with Luisa Alejandra T.

Terrible experience at Berkeley City Sport. A couple of times they refused to let me in because of a problem with my account — but the issue was on their end, and the Richmond branch had already said they would fix it. When I asked the Berkeley staff to call Richmond and sort it out, they were extremely rude and dismissive, almost acting like I wasn’t even there. Totally unprofessional and disrespectful. I ended up cancelling my membership altogether.

Canceling my membership soon. Hot tub hasn’t been working for over a year and I don’t see the point in paying the membership price without getting all that I signed up for.

The facility itself is not bad. I gave it one star because parking for over two hours is NOT free. If you work out for an hour and a half, then take a quick shower, and by the time you dress, you can easily exceed the allotted time by a few minutes. And serious workouts go longer than that. I cannot recommend this. Paying each time I visit is just not worth it.

Editing after a year of being a member, the gym is pretty average and I’ve lowered my rating because the hot tub has been broken for months and the gym hasn’t really done much to improve since I joined.

Edit 2: giving a star back because the front desk staff were extremely helpful after my fiancée’s phone went missing at the gym. Also, the membership rate hasn’t increased so I really can’t complain about the value for the price point.

Edit 3: taking a star off because they’re terrible about repairs. Equipment stays broken forever. Hot tub is of course one example of this. They just put tape over broken things and wait for things to break instead of maintaining things.

City Sports Club has good facilities and yoga classes. It does get really busy after work and almost all the weight section has a line, but other than that it’s great.

When I first got to this location on Monday evening (10/13), I thought it was strange that I signed up for a 3 day free pass, but only received one free day at the gym. No mind, general manager Michael took my ID while I went to work out. I told him that I was just in town for two more weeks, so he told me that he could cut a special deal for a two week membership for me.

When I finished my workout, I went over to his desk and he returned my ID. He told me that he had a special deal for me, $30 for the rest of the month. It was a deal, he said, because usually day use passes are $35. The only thing was, he was helping me out, so I could help him out. He told me that I could purchase a Best Buy or Home Depot gift card on my phone and then give it to him. I emphatically told him *no*, that buying things in gift cards is a known scam!! He backtracked and told me that the gift cards would be to help him buy supplies for the store, that he needs more balloons (he gestured to the 3 balloons floating outside the gym).

He asked me if I had any cash and I said no. I told him I could Venmo him for the membership and I did.

I left the gym feeling super grossed out by this interaction. I don't even care that I got a "deal" (which isn't really much of a deal, considering that I initially was going to get a free 3 day pass and then was denied that). I felt gross that this man had tried to scam me in the slimiest possible way ever.

If City Sports Club does not deal with Michael internally, I will report him both to federal and local authorities for his fraudulent behavior.

I just came to this gym, and I had one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve ever had. I asked the front desk worker, Amber, a very simple question — and she responded with an unnecessarily rude and condescending attitude.

When I asked why she was being so disrespectful, she said, “I’m just being extremely firm since no one takes me seriously because I’m a woman.” That response was completely inappropriate and had nothing to do with the question I asked.

When I politely asked for her name so I could share feedback with management, she refused and said, “I don’t give out my name.” The entire interaction was unprofessional, uncomfortable, and disrespectful from start to finish.

As someone who’s been to many gyms, I’ve never experienced such poor treatment at a front desk. I really hope management addresses this immediately — this kind of behavior reflects very badly on the entire facility.

Its,a rip-off gym, just to join them i paid more than 500 dollars initiation fees and one time PS fees ,I froze my account during the summer they charge another PS fees for that too !¡!which was 60 dollars since they charge by person and by type so was 20 for me another 20 for my son and another 20 for pilates!!!!! The frozen account didn't stop them from charging the membership each month so I had to call each month to reverse the transaction!!!!!! And finally they wanted to charge me for the third month although I was told I can froze my account 3 months, and the guy over the phone was hustling me and screaming at me saying that's it mentioned somewhere at the receipt and I have to pay right now ,called BOF and cut the PS , without mentioning that both jacuzzi and suna didn't work for more than a year and half , worst gym and customer service ever wish I can give you Zero star!!!!!!!

You can only consistently access the good equipment here if you pay an extra 200 dollars a month or more on top of membership for personal training. They use outdated and inaccurate health measurements, like BMI and muscle/body fat measurements using an electrical impedance device paired with some quick math to tell you how many weeks it will take you to lose or gain fat or muscle in an effort to sell more training sessions. If you have body image issues or a history of eating disorders, I would advise you not to join this gym because they make you sit through all that when they sell you a membership. All the measurements they take are known to not be very good indicators of health, and using pseudo science to sell memberships is mean.
Also, when I asked the front where to find mats, the true answer was "people leave them anywhere, I've been trying to order new ones for months but the purchase hasn't been approved". And, every time I touched something in this gym I got a nasty feeling of dirt coating my hands. Many people don't wipe equipment because there's only one wipe container. There's a cleaning person walking through most of the time but I've never seen them actually wipe something down.

Honestly didn't find it that difficult to cancel membership, I was nice but a little firm to the guy on the phone. Don't expect to cancel in person or online- I don't think they'll let you do that.

I’ve been a paying member of City Sports for over a year, and today I was embarrassed and made to feel completely unvalued by one of their so-called “group fitness instructors.” His name is Will. I quietly walked into the group fitness room during his class to grab a step platform because there weren’t any available outside, and instead of handling it professionally, he stopped his ENTIRE class to single me out and bark at me to “get out of [his] class.”

I’ve seen countless members grab equipment mid-class before without a problem, so why was I treated this way? Honestly, I felt discriminated against. Instead of just handing me the platform I needed, Will chose to humiliate me in front of everyone like it was his personal power trip.

This is not how you treat paying members. As a personal trainer myself, I would NEVER make someone feel small and unwelcome the way Will did. It was rude, unnecessary, and completely unprofessional.

With Planet Fitness opening just a couple blocks away, charging less than HALF the price with better customer service, I highly recommend everyone rethink their membership. City Sports clearly doesn’t value its members, and instructors like Will prove it.

Not worth the money. No amenities to speak of. Even the towel service they charge $5 extra a month for doesn't exist. Equipment is always broken, locker rooms are disgusting and moldy, hot tub always broken, gross smells throughout the locker room area. You are also regularly harassed by staff while working out to provide names and contact info for friends/relatives for them to call non-stop. Every workout, without fail, there are PTs/Sales people there sharking the gym floor to sell services & products. Canceling your membership is also a nightmare - they will make you jump through many hoops and threaten you with additional charges if you don't follow their convoluted cancelation policies. I would rate this place zero stars if I could. Avoid this place at all costs!

3 stars cuz it's big and walking distance for me, and relatively clean. Complaints: Hot tub out of commission for over a year now, supposedly "they are waiting for parts to arrive." Lol!! Management choices are inconvenient at best --- refuse to post the class schedule at the desk or on the doors to cycle and group fitness room because they want all customers to use the app exclusively "in case of substitute or cancellation," I was told. Heaven forbid the staff invest the energy to post notices! They took away access to kettlebells and hand weights and stability domes, as these are for expensive personal training only. So many items under lock and key, feels ghetto.
Some staff will greet me when I arrive, some do not, it's about 50/50. The morning staff of the past few months is better than previous staff, which never acknowledged me. Friendly hello to all customers is basic workplace courtesy and should be expected of all staff, regardless of your generation.

Overall a good value. Staff is friendly and the atmosphere is pretty laid back.

Pool sometimes has a terrible smell that I think is either from too many chemicals or people peeing in it. I imagine it’s hard to enforce the latter but it’s so bad sometimes I’ll cut my swim short or will opt for a different workout.

Men’s locker room is pretty clean, but the shower curtains are gross.

There aren’t enough squat racks or leg press machines, so you have to get creative on leg days.

I was really excited to check out this place and was happy to see they offered a 3-day pass, so I went to the gym. Initially, I was impressed with the tour and the amenities and was looking forward to using my 3-day pass and eventually becoming a member. But after listening to over an hour of sales gibberish, confusing pricing, and false promotions urging me to sign up immediately "before prices go up," I decided to leave. I told the salesperson I wanted to go home and think about it, but they kept pressuring me to sign up. When I asked again about the guest pass, they said only a trainer could activate it during weekdays. After spending an hour and a half there, I decided to walk away. Definitely not coming back after reading the reviews and based on my own experience.l

This is now the fifth time I’ve walked through the gym and not found a single sanitary wipe available anywhere. It’s completely unacceptable for a fitness facility to be this careless about basic hygiene — especially when we’re all sharing equipment. Meanwhile, I’m constantly being pushed by staff to refer more people and help them grow memberships, yet they can’t manage the most fundamental responsibility: keeping the place clean.

If you want referrals, start by maintaining the basics. No one wants to work out in a dirty, unsanitary gym. Prioritize your current members before chasing new ones.

BEWARE!!!

I will join the other scathing reviews to warn folks about this gym’s underhanded techniques to make it nearly impossible to cancel services and membership.

I had a misdiagnosed hip injury. Before I knew what was going on, I had signed up for personal training and Pilates, thinking that strengthening my muscles would improve my hip pain.

I told staff about my hip pain and of course they didn’t worry about taking my money, even though working out did harm to my hip.

Realizing that exercise was not helping but worsening my pain, I finally demanded an MRI (don’t get me started on my incompetent GP) and got the diagnosis that I had been exercising through a bad injury and needed a full hip replacement.

When I asked to cancel my monthly personal training in light of my diagnosis of course they did not let me cancel before the six months was up. So I paid for 15 sessions I never used.

When I tried to cancel Pilates they said I needed to come in person to cancel with anyone at the front desk. Of course by then it was hard to make it to the gym to cancel.

So I got out of bed today to cancel my membership in person and find out that they are charging me yet another month!

Beware.

I've been a member of city sports club for a year now. While their machine selection is better than 24hr or fitness 19, that's where the benefits end and problems begin.

In the entirety of my membership the hot tub has been out of service, yet last week I heard them advertising it to a new member.

Twice a week this location specifically is entirely out of sanitary wipes, and they claim it's a logistics issues, when clearly management is neglecting to purchase the needed items for regular maintenance. I've reported broken machines to management just to be yelled at, and told "it's fixed" yet multiple people almost get hurt trying to use it after.

I signed up for an account which includes a "VIP guest pass" which is supposed to allow me to bring one guest a month, yet EVERY SINGLE TIME I've brought someone in the sales dude with dreads corners them, refuses to let them in, demands they sit to sign for a membership. How are you charging me for having guests and not letting them in?

I've had staff bother me IN THE LOCKER ROOM, once putting hands on me because they closed in 4 minutes and didn't think I was being fast enough, another time a skinny dude in sales kept blocking my path demanding I talk to him about pilates.

I've had staff members touch me in the middle of handling over 800lbs to tell me "we close in 30 minutes". Clearly this information was worth the possible injuries caused by pushing someone while lifting.

Lastly, this gym attracts the Worst possible crowds of entitled iPad-kids who sit on machines laughing at memes more than actually working out.

Absolutely pathetic. If there was an option for zero stars, this place would deserve it without question.

First, let’s talk about the parking scam they’re running here. $12 for 2 hours? Seriously? When I asked why, the first security guard confidently told me: “Just pay now, the gym will refund you later.”
Biggest lie of the day.

I went down to the gym, thinking this would get resolved. Nope. “Parking? Not our department. Not our responsibility.” They couldn’t care less.

When I tried again, they pushed me off to another guard… and let me tell you, she acted like I personally ruined her day just by asking a simple question. Completely rude, raised her voice at me, with an attitude like “Don’t bother me with your problems.”

And the gym itself? A total joke.
Machines broken. Dirty floors. Foul smell. Zero maintenance. It felt like a forgotten storage room, not a place people pay to work out.

Honestly, the only workout I got was from walking in circles trying to find someone with a basic sense of customer service—which, spoiler alert: none of them had.

If you enjoy wasting your money, being lied to, and treated like trash—then by all means, come here. Otherwise, RUN.

Never again.

One of the worst gym experiences I’ve ever had. Be very careful before signing up.

I chose City Sports Berkeley only because it was close to my job, but within my first week I had multiple unacceptable issues:

Unsanitary and disturbing: In the women's locker room/showers, there was a girl with a dog—and it was definitely not a service animal. She literally came out of the shower with the dog. That is beyond gross and completely unhygienic. How are people supposed to feel clean and safe using the facilities after that?

Parking scam: They advertise two hours of free parking with validation, but the system didn’t work—twice. I ended up having to pay out of pocket, and when I asked for help, the staff was rude and dismissive.

Unclear rules and poor communication: One of the trainers screamed at me for trying to work out in the “trainers only” section. I was never told this area was off-limits when I signed up. So unless you're paying extra for a trainer, you're basically limited to using just the machines.

No towel service—even for pool use: You have to bring everything with you if you want to use the pool, including multiple towels. If you’re going to the gym before or after work, this makes it incredibly inconvenient—you’re forced to carry several bags. Most gyms offer basic amenities like towels. This one doesn’t.

Terrible customer service and refund policy: I committed and paid almost $600 upfront for a full-year membership, but before the first month even ended, I knew it was a mistake. I spoke with the manager, Lili, and she offered zero solutions. Not even a partial refund. They’ve basically stolen my money.

There are so many better gyms out there with clearer rules, cleaner facilities, and much better customer service. I regret joining City Sports Berkeley and strongly recommend you look elsewhere.

I signed up for a 3-month membership and was told I had to pay the first and last months up front, with the middle month billed later. That was fine—as long as I canceled before the final billing cycle.

I went to the gym several times to cancel, but was always told only the manager could do it, and the manager was never there. No one mentioned I could cancel online—something I only found out much later on my own.

On my final visit, a front desk employee told me she could cancel it herself. I trusted her, but I was later charged for another month. When I asked why, they said they didn’t know, and I discovered my account was still active.

I finally spoke to the manager, who said there was no record of cancellation. To get a refund, I’d have to give up the last month I had already paid for. Even after I showed her that I had taken steps to cancel on time, she dismissed it and said it was my word against theirs. The best they could offer was a partial refund.

The manager never made an effort to help. I was met with defensiveness, not solutions. It felt like they were more focused on squeezing out another payment than treating customers fairly. Disappointing experience.

The parking situation here has been on a steep decline over the past couple of months from even requiring parking validation, to the first two hours free, to now just the first hour. Expecting anyone to get a decent work out in here in this high traffic, packed gym is ridiculous and a money grab.

Really disappointed with the way in which membership approached a free guest pass. Encouraged a friend of mine to come (which took a lot of persuasion) because she said she was curious about the gym.

She commuted from San ramon only to be told that the passes require a session with a personal trainer which needs to be scheduled a week in advance. He then encouraged her to get a membership without even offering a tour.

The entire encounter was disheartening because he was persistent about getting her to sign up without even asking what her goals were. If that really is the case, why didn't they reach out via phone call to get that scheduled?

When I was curious about City Sports, the free pass came with a QR code and it didn't require consultation with membership services. After getting a feel for the gym, I decided to become a member. I am not fond of this aggressive sales approach that they are doing now.

At first I liked most things except I would find ants inside every other day, dirty unclean equipment, etc. The spa here has been out of service the entirety of my membership. Employees will be blazed staring into their phone ignoring me at check in, then chase me down saying I didn't scan myself in. Another employee physically grabbed my shoulder interrupting me in the middle of lifting 8 plates, and clearly felt it was worth my safety and interrupting my workout to try to sell me pilates. I’ve been a loyal customer for about six years now. Other than crowded machines and annoying parking, I couldn’t really complain. Until today, that is. I called ahead to ask if I could get a guest pass for my husband, who was thinking of joining. Was told it was no problem and that he’d be added to “the list.”

We arrive later today and the front desk staff has no idea what we’re talking about. We’re told to take a seat until a representative is available. Five minutes later, he comes over and asks what the problem is. I tell him the same thing I said on the phone six hours earlier. He says the district manager is on the premises and that we’d have to talk to him in 20 minutes… or of course he could just sign my husband up for a membership right then and there.

I know the manipulative tactics these places use, but I never expected to be given this kind of runaround. I told him we’d come back another day. Again, he tried to pressure us to sign up. Psh. I literally just wanted to show my husband the machines and maybe do a 20-min workout, since he’s never used a gym before and I wanted him to get a feel for the experience.

Now, I’m seriously thinking of changing gyms. I don’t pay to be infantilized or fed bullshit. Avoid this gym if you can.

My wallet got stolen here, first off.
Theres only one bathroom for the WHOLE GYM which takes 30 minutes to get into. It's always filthy.
Some workout buddies use two of the same type of machine at the same time, even when the gym is busy without any sliver of common courtesy.
It's sad because the ones in hayward and richmond are far more superior than this location, but because of traffic this is my only option.

A loser operation. The hot tubs, both men and women's have been "out for maintenance" for months.
One of their under trained trainers helped me tear a hamstring by not warming me up 4 months ago. I kept leaving messages that I wanted to stop paying for training since I can't use it but their manager never got back to me. The person that answers phones already got to know me on a first name basis because I called so many times to get ahold of him.$750 dollars and months later I will have to go to court because they have a policy of "NO REFUNDS".

No free day pass, have to book appointment with PT. The smell inside is horrid, super packed at any given day. And as other people have mentioned, parking is a nightmare. Save your money, go to another gym. The sales people here are the most pushy/intrusive on people compared to every other gym in the area.

I first want to clear up the parking issue since a lot of reviews are very misleading. Parking is through a third party parking garage. You get a ticket time stamped the moment you enter and you have 2 hours to exit from the moment stamped on your ticket. It doesn't matter when you get it validated. So if you get your ticket validated at the 1 hour and 55 minute mark and try to leave after 2 hours, you will need to pay 6 dollars for the third hour. City Sports has no control over this and it's shared with the UCSF building. It takes a few minutes to walk from the gym to the parking lot so you have to time your workout appropriately.

Now with that out of the way let's talk about the pros:
Equipment is decent enough. It's better than a 24 Hour Fitness but if it goes out of order there's a huge variance in when it gets fixed. I've seen the leg extension machine take a week to get repaired but the leg curl machine take 2 months to get fixed. Overall I'm happy with the equipment though.

They improved their ventilation I think so the place is nice and cool.

For a chain gym I find the place is decently clean. It's a busy gym so I don't have high expectations but I'm content.

It does get busy, and you can't expect to have immediate access to your favorite machine, but the most I usually have to wait is a few minutes. Sometimes you might have to change the order of what you want to do so flexibility is key.

Cons:
They need way more leg machines/squat racks. Even when the gym is empty, there's a good chance all the leg machines will be full. I've worked out at 9.30 in the morning and will still have to wait to use a leg press machine.

Like I said earlier, HUGE variance in the repair times. Days to months. The hot tub in the men's locker has been down for almost a year. Seriously?

The gym gets crowded yet they still are pushing for you to give referrals. I'll be in the middle of my workout and guys with clipboards will interrupt you to see if you can give them names to contact. Once in a while is fine but it's been almost every day I've been there and it's really intrusive.

One of the employees there is nice when he's on the clock but was a little rude when he was working out (also come on bro, use your turn signals when you turn into the parking lot. You know who you are). I'll just leave it at that.

Sometimes the cleaning staff start cleaning during peak hours (like 5pm), which is fine but they shut down your use of the equipment. I've seen them block off an entire section of treadmills, then stair climber, then ab machines at 5:30pm to clean which is crazy to me because it's so busy then. Would make a lot more sense to clean either earlier or later.

Overall I consider this place a step up from 24 Hour Fitness and for the price it's pretty good. Definitely could be better and it has its quirks but I have no reason to workout anywhere else.

I've been coming for three years. It is a nice enough gym for the price but recently I've considered switching gyms

pros: bright space, kind staff, squat racks and basic necessity for the gym

cons: Hot tub broken often and parking has gotten annoying. They are so rude to you if you misplace your ticket. Originally the space had free parking so them changing to only offer two hour parking and somewhat rude staff is a real turn off for me. Also there is no sauna unlike hayward. Also no turf area and other equipment found at hayward city sports. In general it could be better a I hope this review will offer some insights.

Update: just got stuck after my validation didn't work and had to pay even after validating ...waited 30 minutes for the help button, security couldn't help. I wouldn't park at the rooftop parking. The parking company should be ashamed and I will be demanding a refund.

★ 1

Pros: cheap, good workout equipment and variety, large space.
Cons: Fraudulent business practices, major parking issues, dirty, poorly maintained, lack of accountability for any issues

Examples: They claim free 2-hour rooftop parking but their validation system rarely works, often resulting in being forced to pay $6-$12 charge for parking (otherwise you are unable to exit). They refuse to help with refunds or issues re parking. They also advertise a free 3-day pass for guests but refuse to hand them out if you actually bring a guest. Very shady sales tactics used by their sales/management teams. The hot tub is almost always closed and the bathrooms and equipment are often dirty (I refuse to shower here). Bathrooms are often out of paper towels and toilet paper, and gym area is often out of hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes. Also, no sauna at this location.

Strongly considering cancelling my membership because of all of these major issues. I do not like supporting this gym.

My experience with the Berkeley gym has been terrible! They offer free parking for 2 hours. You arrive at the exit with your valid ticket within the 2 hours and still have to pay for parking. I've had days of loss. A monthly fee for parking is absurd to the consumer! And the attendant at the gate says that it's only free for 1 hour and not 2 hours. The gym is also very crowded, the equipment is broken and there's a lot of dirt on the floor. It needs to improve a lot and reach the level of the Richmond unit. I'm disappointed.

Disappointing and Misleading Experience.

Was excited to try this gym based on its good reviews. Their website clearly states you can visit in person to sign up for a 3-day free trial. However, upon arrival, I was told I needed to book an assessment with a PT before using the trial. This information wasn't mentioned anywhere online, and when the sales rep and I reviewed the form together, it confirmed my frustration: there’s no mention of this requirement on their site, and no assessment slots were available until the end of the month.

Rather than addressing my concerns, the sales rep admitted he’d never filled out the form himself and repeatedly explained the PT assessment process, which was irrelevant and unhelpful. No one seemed willing to acknowledge or address the gap between their advertising and the in-store process.

I was told to speak to management (Jose or Monica?), I waited, only to find they were unavailable. I had to relay my story multiple times, only to be told I’d receive a call back, which I doubt will happen.

I went in to test the gym space as advertised but left feeling disappointed by the lack of transparency, critical thinking, and empathy from the staff. This experience fell far short of the professionalism I expected.

Front desk staff and trainers are GREAT. Management and policies are TERRIBLE. They are completely unreasonable and do not follow standard business/gym policies with regard to money. 2 examples:
1) After cancelling training package was mistakenly charged $270. Did not realize it until 30 days later. Asked for a refund and they refused. Nor would they offer $270 credit towards training services. They bascially took $270 from me for NO SERVICES RENDERED. 2) A friend paid $20 for a guest pass even though I have unlimited passes. Within AN HOUR of me realizing my friend spent $20 for no reason, we promptly asked for the $20 back. They said the cash was already in the safe and they could not open it.

This gym is just fine for what it is because i get it free through work. If I had to pay I definitely would see what else is out there.

I absolutely despise the act of trying to sign up members through other members that are WORKING OUT as members. Why is a door to door salesman style thing happening when i’m doing back crunches? I feel bad they make these guys do this, i assume it’s the egotistic GM with the rose tattoo. Been going here for 4 years and not once has this guy given any impression he cares except for sales. My only interaction was him telling me 2 years ago my friends guest pass was no good even though there was no fine print and i was a member. Had to pay $20 for the honor of one hour of working out in a BO infested gym. Get some air movement guys.

This gym is normal-cheap. Except, you may get trapped in the parking lot for more than 30 minutes on any given day!
If your life is at all complicated, go to a different “normal-cheap” gym with a normal parking lot.

The rooftop parking seems great at first, but it is managed by the building owners and not by the gym. It is a new system that is terrrrrrible. It, often, malfunctions and traps a line of 30 cars ON THE ROOF for more than 30 minutes.

If you park in many garages, you’ve seen it before, where the attendant has to stand next to the machine to help the machine and the people and the malfunction. The problem in this case is that, those “attendants” are the building security and can’t stay there for long.

If you go to the gym after work and don’t have any other things you have to get to, then chill and cool off in line.

But if you’re like me and you have kids and another job and it’s amazing that you can squeeze in 45 minutes of exercise as long as you perfectly manage your time in and out of the building: go to another normal-cheap gym. An extra 10 minutes of driving every trip is nothing compared to it ruining the rest of your day.

Hot Tub broken since APRIL!!!
I joined Citysports because not only was it in my neighborhood but it has a hot tub. Last spring, March or April the hot tub stopped working. What is a reasonable amount of time for a facility like this to fix one of their most valued and attractive amenities..? 2 weeks, a month, 6 weeks? Try 7 months!!! It's STILL broken, and they say they are trying to find someone to fix it.....we live in one of the largest urban areas in the country and they are trying to say they cant find someone to fix it?! Sounds like they don't want to spend any money but will continue to charge the same monthly fee without any effort to compensate its members. The Manager was entirely non helpful and acted like notifying me when it's fixed or freezing my membership without charging me was adequate customer service. I asked just to refund me annual fee as I would've joined another gym had I known it would be out this long, but since the spring they just keep saying it'll be fixed in another couple of weeks to keep collected their monthly fees. I'm so annoyed they can't give the slightest compensation to their members after investing in the club, nor get their shit together and fix the hot tub, unbelievable.

UPDATE 2023- Corporate only values profit, not customers. They communicate poorly. They are permanently closing child care because it does not make any money according to them. Also any changes to parking and class changes are minimal.
UPDATE April 2018: I am downgrading to 3. You get what you pay for. Yes, it works, but you just have to be OK with certain things.

GOOD - Free roof top parking, most instructors are OK to good, machine works,

OK (passing greade) - clean enough for most people, Most kids Club staff are nice, new cleaning staff is doing better than the previous staff. Swimming pool is small.

BAD - Paper towels and toilet papers are out sometimes. Front staff could use more training in terms of giving information, Corporate is not interested in your suggestions. Some instructors and Kids Club staff should not be working there at all. Shower stalls are filthy.

Then let us know we are not allowed to use the guest pass cuz they’re at “capacity”. There’re no signs posted at the gym, no information about this “at capacity” regulation on the website, the app, nor the email my friend received.i was reading the reviews, it seems like they been scamming ppl like this from years ago. Both the women's and men's jacuzzi are forever always out of service, not to mention looked grimey and molding. So, maybe it's a good thing. They need to not just try to fix, but to totally remodel.

You would think, if any integrity the owners/management would offer members some sort of discount, perks or some incentive, as members are paying for their full membership dues, however, not receiving full benefits of it's usage....

Now, they have 1) increase the membership by $20 and 2,) create pilates 'special' class to join $99. I recall pilates was a class they had on schedule as part of the gym's classes itinerary. This is to put the repair bill on the members rather than management footing the bill, knowing jacuzzi's are old and outdated and needed to be repaired/replaced. Ridiculous

It’s an okay gym. Very short on Olympic bars for power lifters, so people power lifting remove bars from the benches. At lunch or just after work, Olympic bars are in short supply.

In over 4 years working out at the gym, I’ve only seen staff returning plates for Olympic bars to a weight tree exactly once and he was putting them in the wrong place. The real problem are the dumbbells under 30 pounds, scatter all over gym, so during the busy times, finding lighter dumbbells is very hard. Also, during busy times, dumbbells up to 60 pounds have spotty availability.

The water fountains are not maintained and dispense warm water. Way too many aerobic machines and weight machines. No kettlebells or TRX unless you pay for the trainers.

The maintenance on the vinyl covers for the benches and weight machines is awful. No proactive maintenance on machines, so the "machine scheduled for service" sign is a common sight.

If you're a power lifter, it's hard. I wouldn't say the gym hates power lifters, but it definitely does not go out of its way for powerlifters. There’s no dedicated space for powerlifting. So, most powerlifting happens around the squat racks. If they had 4 more Olympic bars and could move some machines around, powerlifting could be great instead it’s hard to find space and an Olympic bar.

The pool has a lot of chlorine and during the busy times you will share a lane. The hot tubs I never tried due to the overpowering smell of chlorine and weird foam covering them. The men’s hot tub is usually empty.

You can get a decent workout here, but because of crowding, you have to be very creative with your workouts. Always be prepared with alternative exercises, else you’ll spend the majority of time waiting for equipment to be free (I’m not exaggerating).

The sales team may tell you that you can use exclusive equipment in the training area, but that’s not true. The trainers will aggressively chase you out. Also, go over the very long contract in detail and find all monthly charges and fees. They use some dark patterns to squeeze money out of you.

Occasionally, staff will interrupt your workout asking for referrals. It doesn’t happen often, but it’s extremely annoying.

I’ve been a member of city sports club branch of Berkeley for a long time. On 4/4/24 an incident happened that brought me to the conclusion that I don’t want a membership at this gym anymore. The gym had a shortage of short barbel bars. There was only 1 which was at the private training section. I approached there and explained the situation to one of the personal trainers and instead of helping she told me that the bar belongs to the private training section and it’s for the people who pay 200$ per month and that I have to leave that area immediately. It took me 15 minutes to find a responsible person that brought me the bar to the main room which made me completely cold in the middle of my session. After my session I approached the trainer lady and told her that she was rude and expected an apology. Instead she denied that she had a rude behavior. Today on 5/6/24 I had a call from the branch manager. Unbelievably she told me that I used profanity which is a lie. I don’t need a membership at this gym with the rude staff. I brought 3 people to this gym which was a big mistake. Other than that the gym has nasty bathrooms with moldy curtains. The jacuzzi is always full of foam which is because of late cleanings and the reaction of urine and the chemicals. The gym is always crowded and has shortage of equipments. It takes them months to replace or repair damaged machines.
Hopefully word of mouth will do the job after this incident.

The lady was just there to waste our time and make us spend a longer time in the facility. Then she told us to wait for some guy to, “validate the guest pass” even though we could’ve just scanned the QR code I received and gone in. We waited for another 10 minutes for this guy to walk out to not even greet us, with a rude look and horrible customer service. He told us he can’t validate our guest pass because they have a “spring break blackouts”. I’ve been a member of 3 different gyms and never in my life have I heard of such a thing. Then he wanted to waste more of our time talking about a $20 day pass, so I just cut in and asked so you’re not going to let us use this facility even though we have a guest pass, to which he responded correct and we simply walked out. Honestly, this place hired people who are just out to waste your time and money. Go anywhere but here lol.

The rest of the gym has way too much foot traffic for the amount of available machines to get a a good workout. & I only decided on this gym because of the kids club which they closed down two weeks into my membership.

I actually had came in yesterday 3/21 with a free week pass that i was given on 3/20 and was told they weren't doing free passes anymore. im not sure who i spoke to but he told me he'd give me a free "pass" to be invited back today 3/22 because i wasnt too happy with my experience.
i just wasn't comfortable in the space, i was left to wander and not really given a proper tour, they dont replace their water filters…all if them are red, there’s no sanitizing stations, the weights area looks so unorganized it’s overwhelming. i also didnt appreciate the fact that i had to wait 20 minutes, just for someone to tell me, that i couldnt use the weekly pass i was given by their staff, but when i come back from my "sorry for the inconvenience day pass" i can get a discounted membership??.. i was a thrown off and it truly left a bad taste in my mouth.…
straight up misleading and im keeping my Planet Fitness Membership.

I joined City Sports Club in Berkeley through a program Kaiser offers. I went in for the first time today (a Sunday afternoon) to get checked in. Paola was at the front desk and was so lovely. I didn’t meet with anyone regarding membership, so I can’t say anything about that process. There were plenty of machines available throughout the gym. Everything seemed really clean. There are sanitizing wipes in every area to wipe off before and after. The locker rooms and shower/hot tub area looked very well maintained. I’m happy I was able to join and got a great rate through the ActiveFit program Kaiser offers.

The employees are very kind and helpful. The interior is very clean, the equipment is not bad, it is like new. I've been here for about a few months. However, it gets a little busy after 6pm, around 6-7pm. But we can still do sports. I advise. This service is really good for this price, as you know it is very difficult to find a place that provides service around here in every sense.

The gym and equipment are great. Staff could use some training. Especially in customer service. Have had multiple unpleasant encounters with the front desk worker. First time, I had asked for directions to the parking garage. She had an attitude and said she didn’t know. Second interaction was when there was a line of 15 people waiting to check in. One man skipped the line to use the restroom. She did not have the scanner out and was making everyone wait. She yelled at him and again had a very unprofessional attitude.

Takeaway: some people should not work in customer service.

Extremely clean. Not a fan of using sani wipes, I prefer when we had spray bottles, but still, very clean. Gets a little busy in the evening, but if you can go early, almost no problem getting on equipment

The gym itself isn’t bad, but with the amount of people and the amount of broken machines that takes them up to a month to fix, there are some days that it’s just impossible to get a good workout in. Also, the amount of staff that don’t rerack their weights is pathetic

I’m in search of a new gym after I ended my membership in Equinox and 24 Hour Fitness. I signed up for a 3 day pass online and came here. Michael gave me a tour of the facility and then we sat down and went to a hard sell. He was trying to give me a good discount but I told him a want to use my free pass first and see it myself if this is the gym I am looking for. I would like to try it first before I make a decision in signing up as a new member. But he was rushing me, I feel like he wants me to make decision right away. The 3 day pass will depend if you give them an assurance you will join the club. Otherwise they will make an excuses so you won’t be able to use the free pass. I’m very disappointed! All they care is money, their sales. You better just remove the 3 day free pass in your website as this is a total Scam. I have a high hopes with this gym even I heard a lot of bad comments from other people, But after my experience no wonder why they have a lot of complaints and a very poor rating in yelp and google 👎🏼

It's no Equinox but a great space with plenty of options for machines, love the jacuzzi option and although I haven't used it yet, the pools at multiple locations sold me (I'll get my swim in eventually). Great value for the investment.

Trash customer service run by Mike Mora and sales, even though your membership allows for guest passes, they try to sell you a day pass at $20. Club is always dirty and and most of the machines are broken

I love City Sports gym on San Pablo ave. Been going since before the Pandenic. There covid 19 protocols were spectacular. This gym is SO clean, they atmosphere is GREAT. Its nice to have found a gym that has ALL shapes, sizes, great mixture of ethnic backrounds and no ATTITUDES. Everyone is so positive and friendly you feel at home everytime you go to work out.

I've been a City Sports member for several years and have used most of the facilities, including the strength training equipment, cardio machines, stretching areas, locker room, showers, and pool. I find the number of treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, and stair climbing machines plentiful. The treadmills are starting to show some wear and can be hit or miss, and there are usually one or two out of order at any given time, but overall the cardio machines are great.

I really like the variety of resistance training machines. There are pulley-based Nautilus type machines as well as plenty of free weight stations. I try not to go during peak hours, so usually I can get on any machine I want and get three sets in. I haven't found these machines to be out of order as often as some reviewers have mentioned, and they have all worked smoothly for me.

The place is quite clean and doesn't smell either of sweat or toxic cleaning supplies.

I'm taking a star off because the pool is small and only two lanes, and seems to attract swimmers that don't know much about lane etiquette. Also, some of my friends have had bad experiences as visitors, reporting that when they joined a member as a plus-one guest they got a lot of phone calls from the sales staff pressuring them to join. Other friends have complained that the 3-day pass felt like a bait-and-switch as the staff said too many (I'm guessing they meant UC Berkeley) were using them. So they stopped honoring the passes and my friends got pressure to join.

To me the pricing is quite reasonable for the use of all that this gym has to offer. It lacks some amenities, a real pool, and perks like clean towels, but it's more than adequate the way it is.

I signed up then had a trauma happen so I went through the online cancellation process which requires you to mail in a printed pdf, which I did. Apparently corporate never received the pdf so they keot chargin me until I finally realized they were still charing me months later. The only thing they offered was to refund 2 months, which was about 80 out of over 800 they had charge me even though they could seee that I never used the gym and that I completed the process online.
