I’ve been a member at City Sports Hayward for about 4 years, and I’ve seen a noticeable change recently. For a long time, many of the one-star reviews were spot on—machines would stay broken for weeks, things weren’t fixed right away, and the club didn’t always feel as well maintained as it should.

But since Anant took over as manager, it feels like a completely different club. Machines are being repaired quickly, the facility looks cleaner, and there’s even a new Pilates class setup that adds variety to the workout options. The addition of the protein shake/snack bar being open again also gives the gym a more complete feel.

One example of the turnaround: a couple of months ago, there was a TikTok trend where people started stealing the weight machine pins. For a couple of weeks, it was a real problem. But instead of letting the gym fall apart, the staff got creative and found temporary solutions until new pins arrived. That kind of responsiveness is a big change from how things used to be handled.

Overall, I credit Anant for setting a higher standard. The gym feels more organized, problems are addressed quickly, and the energy is more positive. I can honestly say this is the best the club has looked and felt in years.

Great gym. Love it there. It's one of the older ones, but it's still one of the nicer places to work out. I used to pool and sauna there everyday during the week. Water is always crystal clear in the hot tub. During the morning and daylight hours, majority of people are middle-aged I guess. But there are a lot of senior citizens there too. This place has had questionable reviews in the past, but I know that they brought in a new operations manager a couple of months ago. Her name is Brandy. He's got a good head on their shoulders and she's really good with the people. She seems to be addressing a lot of the cosmetic issues by having corporate send them their paint and maintenance teams to resolve some of the issues that members have brought up to them..

This gym has gone downhill fast. For the price of $40 a month plus a $60 “maintenance fee” every year you’d expect a clean, well-kept facility. Instead, it feels worse than Planet Fitness. Most of the machines are broken and never get repaired, the gym is consistently dirty, and weights are left scattered everywhere.

Someone recently stole all the pins from the weight machines. Instead of replacing them, the staff now requires members to hand over personal belongings (like a phone or keys) just to borrow a pin which is completely unacceptable, especially at this price point.

Instead of making members hand over their personal property, maybe the staff could actually walk the floor, monitor equipment use, or help keep the place organized since that is their job. Unfortunately, they spend most of their time glued to their phones. Overall, this gym is overpriced, poorly managed, and not worth it.

Also, there's been a piece of gum stuck to a 45 lbs plate and one stuck to a smith machine for months.

Im new to city sports i upgraded gyms but i thought i did. I came from planet fitness across the mall. This city sports has been nothing but a disappointment. I would not recommend signing up for personal training (PT) here. My experience with Irving Mart!nez was frustrating and unprofessional. He frequently handed me off to other trainers despite initially promising to work with me directly. He and his trainers were often late or canceled last minute, and the workouts didn’t align with what I requested for my goals. On multiple occasions, he made inappropriate comments, uses derogatory language in his aspiring rap career, and blurred professional boundaries — even inviting me to go with him to a dispensary. Word of caution- if you’re thinking about joining, think twice! When I signed up a year ago, it was with the understanding (in writing) that I would be entitled to “court privileges”, these privileges are not free but part of my monthly dues. Flash forward -suddenly, City Sports management and corporate have decided to remove one of the only 3 courts that are heavily used daily for various activities that include racquetball. For the sole purpose of dedicating that one court to Pilates.
Management is not listening to reason by communicating with its members to even considering using other space that could potentially be available - HORRIBLE MANAGEMENT COMMUNICATION!
Needless to say City Sports actions or inactions are destroying any confidence that I have in their ability to care about what their members think. Unless, City Sports management does the right thing- It looks like it might well be time to find another club…

Every time I go to this gym, I ask myself why I keep returning and why I even have a membership here. Although the foothill location is kept up well, this southland one is pretty terrible.

Half the time, multiple machines are down for maintenance, parts are missing or coming apart on “functioning” machines, there’s constantly no sanitary wipes to be found, toilet paper out in the ladies room (this is bare minimum stuff???), out of paper towels / the dispenser is jammed.

Seriously what are the people who work here doing with their time??? I genuinely do not understand. I always see people at the front chatting it up - never going around wiping anything down, replenishing anything, seriously such poor cleanliness and even poorer management of this location - not to mention paying upwards of $40 a month.

This gym was great when it first opened. As of lately its been falling apart fast machines breaking down too often and not being repaired in a timely fashion. Sauna starting to get bad again, plus lockers are getting messed up again. Then lack of barbells used to have one for each squat rack and bench. Plus dumbbells disorganized all the time. The new managers are doing better than the previous one. Corporate dropping the ball on this gym. Can't even blame management or the workers.

I'm gonna be honest here - I can't justify giving this place more or less than 3 stars because I've only been a member here for 2 days, but I can say a few things;

Staff seemed a bit too eager to make a sell. (I know it's their job, but I'd like to you know...try the gym out before jumping on board) which was not an option.

There is a ton of machines here, and free-weights, bench-presses, squat racks, etc which is great - but the thing is this place appears to always be jam-packed.

I like to work-out early in the morning, so I may just hold onto my planet fitness membership, since it's quite empty there early mornings, and then see if this place grows on me after a few more weeks.

One last thing, (not that this is a pro/con against the gym itself) but the people here are largely serious about working out. I'd say 75% of the people in the gym at any given time are there to do business, not play around.

Basic repairs have taken a long time lately. They have been 2 bikes and 2 treadmills out of order since October. There is plenty of cardio so I don't think it has bothered enough people to complain. 2 of the biggest issues with the amount of torn upholstery across the weight machines and benches. Technically this is a OSHA violation as bacteria grows in the padding when the vinyl is ripped. There is a bench completely missing a mid back pad that can lead to injury. Club should definitely purchase 3 more olympic bars. There are 3 squat racks, 3 flat benchs, 2 incline benches, 1 decline bench and 1 shoulder press. There are only 7 bars so people constantly move a 7ft bar around the gym to work out.

You would think with New Years crowds coming in there would be an attempt to repair obvious visual issues along with out of order equipment.

Disappointed with Gym Culture and Cleanliness

I visited City Sports Club at 24500 Hesperian Blvd, Hayward, CA, for the first time today. I live nearby, so the location is convenient, and I signed up for a membership yesterday. My initial experience started on a positive note—the lady at the front desk was incredibly sweet, helpful, and joyful. Her customer service was excellent.

Unfortunately, my experience went downhill from there. The gym culture at this location is messy and unhygienic. Unlike Crunch Fitness/Planet Fitness, where members consistently clean up after themselves and wipe down equipment, this gym seems to lack those basic standards. Many members here use equipment and just walk away without cleaning up.

The weight setup also left a lot to be desired. While the gym has a lot of machine weights, it seems heavily focused on them and lacks variety in free weights. There are only three squat racks, which is very limiting for anyone focusing on strength training.

To be honest, I’m glad I didn’t choose this location as my home gym. My job takes me past the City Sports Club at Whipple, and I’ll be trying that location tomorrow. Based on this visit, I likely won’t return here unless I’m only planning to use the cardio machines/Sauna room. This was a disappointing experience overall.

Jimmy T. (Also known as J.T) is a horrible General Manger that does not know how to handle situations, instead he profiles people without any actual proof. One of my kids (who is 15) decided he wanted to do the 3 day pass in which he received from a worker. Instead Jimmy T. profiled him saying he was there 3 months ago and he gave him a month pass. Which was a lie. There is no such thing as a free month pass and When I tried to ask him questions about situations he used the excuse of “I’m going on Lunch break” or if he sees me coming he walks away. What type of GM can not talk to customers. He is a coward and should take a job that’s remote instead of in-person if he’s to scared to talk to customers. I asked him to show me the proof in which he couldn’t. I was actually going to buy my kid a gym membership if he would have stayed consistent for those 3 days but because of the coward Jimmy is and how he profiled my Kid who is only 15 years old I will not be moving forward. Two thefts in last 15 days. My AirPod stolen from workout area and after asking staff multiple times to see camera no action taken. Sunday 3/12/23, more than 7 ladies lost their phones and wallets from locker room locked lockers. Locks were broken. They let anybody in do not check in guests or see ID. Had to wait 10 minutes for someone to tell me that guest passes can't be activated before 9am. It'd be nice if in the email notification it stated that, but it simply says "Attached is the Guest Pass you requested. Please bring the attachment to the club and allow us to show you the club and activate your complimentary Pass." This makes it seem like all you have to do it walk in.

Secondly you can't sign up before 9am in person. You need to be signed up by a sales person, so my money isn't wanted I guess. Very dirty place. On 11/23/22. Very rude young employees who hid and sat on the top of dresser in the woman room chatting chatting for more than an hour. When customers asked employees to move so They can dried their hair , But the employees refused to move and harassed to customers rudely. People in the sonar room with dirty shoes on and put their foot on the bench.other Customers complained but the manager didn’t do anything about it. It is the worst place to go.

Every time I visit City Sports Club I feel great because the staff is friendly, the facility is kept very clean. #Racquetball is my thing here and most other places I go to play wish the courts were kept as nice as our courts. No dust bunny's here! Thanks to all the staff. Keep up the good work. YOU ALL ARE FANTASTIC!!

I agree just joining and these young people who work don’t have customer service skills and integrity — calling corporate the bathrooms are not clean plus it should be staff that clean machines feels stuffy needs new air filters sometimes I feel all in the gym are not members just here to play and work out for free

My card was charged $100.00 five times from this place.

When I was first signing up on site, I asked to pay with Apple Pay. They said it didn’t work after hours and the worker wrote down my credit card information.

Mind you I knew that was off but continued with it anyways.

The next morning. 500 was charged from “ City Sports “

When I only agreed to the 168.98 that it was. For the first last month initiation fee.

Awful place. Dirty place. Several machines currently broken and dirty.

I still go here, sadly.

No cameras inside or out. Multiple cars being broken into, including mine. A huge building with not a single camera on the exterior and the crooks know this Machines are not properly maintained (usually broken and not fixed in adequate time). If it wasn't about convenience, I'd never go.

Some members are just too lazy and inconsiderate not to put the weights back where it supposed to be. Not enough staffing in the front most of the time. And if they do they just sit there and chat. Never once I saw a staff go around the club if it needs cleaning and organizing.

Kids club is a game changer, although the hours can be limiting for some. 8am-12pm and 4pm to 8pm monday- Friday and 8am-12pm on Saturdays no kids club sundays ...thus far. My 2 and 3 year olds enjoy playing with the other kids for a good hour and some, with some coloring supplies and even little bouncy/walkers available for your little (not walking yet) kids.

The Hesperian location is just ridiculously dirty compared to the 2 other local locations-- which are literally down the street. The lockers are dirty, the hot tub is dirty, and don't walk on the floor without shoes! They need to invest in a cleaning staff and pool cleaning staff that actually cleans, because there are injured, elderly and wheelchair bound members who NEED these services (pool, hot tub, etc)and deserve better!!

Have had for 5+ years and continue to have a membership here.

Equipment always broken.
Lack of equipment variety.
Expensive.
No guest passes.
No really good membership options
Increasingly has people bugging you for training and other sales.

The memberships are expensive, but half the equipment is broken at ALL TIMES. They rarely have passes for guests so you cannot bring a friend unless you pay a ton extra to have it on your membership.

I was told I could bring my brother in on my membership by a staff member, my brother came up from SoCal for a week.....we go to the gym.....and my brother could't come in because I had no guest access on my membership (not what I was told when I asked the first time). I asked if they had a guest pass.....they had none and wouldn't work something out. The daily pass is 20 bucks so we left.

I joined over summer. It’s ok. Cleanliness is decent but the bathrooms are hit and miss. Sometimes clean and sometimes upside down. And they allow people not to wear masks….they have signs posted to wear a mask but that’s it. I try to go in during off hours…

Dont sign up for personal training. Canceling it is impossible. In the end, you'll have to print out a form and mail it out with postage in order to pause or cancel your training. In the meantime, they will continue to bill you until "corporate" finally receives the form and approves it.

I called to double check on my account and confirm that the billing was accurate, but the background noise made it so hard to communicate. When I told the person that answered that I was not able to hear him he said he can’t do anything about it because it’s a gym. After making him repeat over the noise he then continued saying that my daughter was not in my account and that he was the only one in charge at the moment. He hung up, so I decided to call City Sports on Whipple Ave and they were very professional and extremely helpful. And yes, my daughter was in the account as always.

I joined City Sports about 8 months ago. I was very impressed with the cleanliness and daily janitorial staff. I was underwhelmed by the management. Once I signed on the dotted line with one I was immediately forgotten and became invisible.
Now about 8 months later the sales staff has become loud in their open seating area, generally fails to wear their masks and seems to spend their time socializing with one another or tossing a basketball around.
The janitorial staff are there sporadically and when they’re there seems to fail completing the tasks that need doing. I have experienced lack of tp in the womens stalls, no soap, no paper towels and no hand sanitizer on the workout floor. In the past I’ve brought this to their attention and it’s been taken care of immediately. Today, however, I spoke to someone about the lack of tp in one of the stalls, was told ‘we’ll get right on it’ and when I checked almost an hour later nothing had changed.
Is customer service really as dead as it seams? Hope someone at this gym is reading these reviews and will do something about the problem.

I like the gym! People are friendly but it’s hard to find the dumbbells to workout on. Their dumbbells are all over the place. I like the atmosphere in the gym. Every one does their own thing. It’s very clean!

I was a member for a couple of years, it doesn’t get crowded like planet fitness. But if customer service is important to you then don’t join this gym. They don’t greet you at all. The manager deliberately avoids guest and the staff are completely clueless. In fact, I don’t know why they even have a front desk staff if all they do is sit there! Other than that, this gym doesn’t offer anything worth signing up for.
