The gym is supposed to open at 5am, on 10/24/25 failed to do so. It is now 5:20am and many people are waiting to little avail. Here I stand losing hope, losing faith in the gym I once loved. Ruined my day. Unprofessional, appalling, and inconsiderate.

Edit: it is now 5:30am, still nothing. Most people left, I am leaving too. Took my pre workout just before arriving per my usual routine; my body tingles uncomfortably. Let it be known that many frequent patrons of this establishment became disillusioned on 10/24/25.

This is my local gym that I visit 4x a week and will never ever trade it for the SOUTHLAND location. But damn… something needs to be done about these broken machines, one of which has been this way for OVER A MONTH. Also they need to switch some of these hoist machines for actual useful machines — perhaps another abductor machine? A hack squat even? This is my second home and I’d love to see it improve.

Welcome to the newest yet the most poorly managed, neglectfully maintained and straight up unhygienic and disgusting City Sports Club location in the Bay Area!

When this location opened up, it was the shiniest location in Hayward. This gave local residents an option to the existing locations on Whipple and Hesperian. Yet in under two years, this has become the worst choice. I avoid it and prefer to go to one of the other locations even though this is right next to where I live.

The lockers are broken and damaged. The changing rooms are unclean. The showers are smelly, moldy, and have gum, hair, and just gross items all over. The showers have next to no pressure ever. The soap containers are never filled out and have a watery mix when they do fill them up. The floor is just so dirty.
The pool and Jacuzzi are gross. The jacuzzi has yucky sudsy scum floating in it.
The sauna stinks. You will frequently run into young kids getting on top of the benches and "shadow box" without any regard to other members.
The gym itself smells. Weights are never re-racked. Equipment is frequently out of service. Last winter the roof was leaking with the rain. I mean come on! The staff is just on their phones and didn't really care.

Part of the problem is the management, but partly it's also the crowds using this gym. There is just no discipline. Feel free to try it out and correct my review. Or do yourself a favor and stay away...

Why does management not respond to negative reviews, that is a red flag and implies a lack of accountability, which infers there is no corrective action in place to deal with the customer complaints. The biggest issues, I keep seeing are the lack of cleanliness, which is a big issue for a gym. Pictures of roaches and dirty underwear in the sauna. Management should be responding and letting the members know this is going to be handled and things are in place to mitigate this moving forward. Not a good look.

Nice clean gym lots of equipments. Pool is always has issues. Different classes to take. Customer service is not the best. They really don't want to help you with machines if you have a question about equipments. The only way you really get help is to sign up for a trainer.

Half staff are on their phones. Basically you are on your own. No help from customer service. You gotta figure out everything on your own. Little by little I'm trying my best not to need help. Help is not there. They are there just to sign you up. Luckily I already know how to use some of equipment..

These are the friendliest most professional workers I’ve ever experienced at any gym. Every time without fail the front desk not only my greets me cheerfully at 6:30 am , but they say “have a good workout” every time. They are cheerful , polite & seem genuine. I b!tched about the squeaky hip abduction machine & they fixed it! No more noise! This gym could use better hip thrusting machines ( I don’t like city sports hip thrusters at all their locations) .Other than that the staff is great, cleaning crew is amazing & delightfully polite. I wish they had the glute kick back machine that is at southland & Fremont locations. That would take this gym next level. I give it a 9/10 overall & so do my guests!

The people who are working here are....not the best. Thank goodness I'm getting this membership through my company. I met with one person who was supposed to enroll me but that person seemed angry. Didn't really talk or sell the gym. This person was somewhat stoic and it made me feel uncomfortable 😕 This person even had the nerve to scratch their forehead with their middle finger facing me. 😳 Scary. Another thing is this annual fee of 59.00 dollars. The gym is not really clean. It just opened and it's already banged up. So what is the annual fee for? Customer Service doesn't exist anymore so don't expect it here. Oh and the person at the front desk looks as if they are strung out on something. Not friendly at all. I will give it a try and pull the plug if things go left. Watch your valuables. People are desperate out there.

This rating is for the swimming pool. Always a kid's swimming class including weekends with no schedule posted. If you ask the front they don't know when they start or when they finish. It's making it almost impossible to swim at different times when you have two available lanes. One time I had to visit three different clubs with kids swimming classes and two busy lanes. This problem is not unique to this location but most of their locations.

so sorry, I ever considered a gym membership, especially with city SPORT in Hayward. i’ve been trying to reach the manager Junior for over a month that he fails to return my call, I’m being billed $240 a month for personal service training so I’ve not been able to take due to Covid that has turned into long Covid and I submitted my physician documentation from Stanford. I have found only lies, cheating, theft, and abuse of an elder. Clearly, I’m not happy and will never sign up for another membership again in my life. This experience did it for me. Not right, not fair and it was a very expensive lesson to learn, but I’m canceling my credit card payments so that the abuse will stop Because they have no mechanism to help me and have no intentions to do the right thing. Also, just a note every time I thought about using the pool, it was occupied by children swimming based on a contract they have with the school I believe so the pool is not always Available for use by paying members. Feels like they are double dipping on that but no longer my concern. I am done with this gym And highly recommend that no one ever uses them.

Free weights are a mess and totally unorganized. I even went on a Sunday morning when they opened and the weights weren’t organized! I thought this was something customers did through out the day but it’s clear that they don’t even organize the weights the night before.

The gym is very crowded. I’m always very frustrated coming here after work and not being able to work out the way I want to.

I just want to give a shout out to the tall janitor guy with the glasses and curly hair that works there he did a really good job keeping the place clean my boyfriend who frequent this gem and takes me with him a lot here recently even said that this guy is doing the best out of most of the lack luster employees that works they. The bathrooms are cleaned the trash cans are never overfull, and there's always something done right when he's on the job and i gotta agree with him. this guy just does his job like nothing else really matters he goes above and beyond and he's very polite respectful and does a good job if anyone working there deserves a raise or employee of the month it's definitely him

I’ve been here since day 1 opening. Beautiful new gym a couple years ago, nice swim facilities, open well designed gym, sauna and ample cardio machines. But they had plenty of lack of cleaning issues over the years that have quickly degraded the facility. My wallet got stolen when I was on the squat rack and the camera right above me was for show and not working. They have no security cameras. I asked them for help to ID as thief who stole thousands from my bank account was shown on camera at Walgreens. The manager Swas S refused to help.

And now this latest issue is almost entirely predictable. I don’t know the details but I came to the gym with a dozen fire trucks, police and ambulances. They said it was a chlorine gas spill. I am not surprised this happened here. 5 days later still closed with zero update. Absolutely horrific management for a fairly nice looking gym.

For me personally this gym gets 0 stars. I only come for the sauna which is always at 135-140 degrees (there is a 1-inch gap under the door that lets heat escape). I have things to do. I can't be in there for 20 minutes before the first sweat bead dribbles down my back. I stop by every few weeks to see if this issue has been addressed but it hasn't. For that reason I will have to continue going to the gym they have on Hesperian which maintains a nice 180-190 degree sauna despite it adding another 30 minutes to my overall trip.

I will give it a 4 stars for the general public, -1 star for the sauna issue. It's always been clean the few times I went. All the spaces are in use when I go so it looks like everything is in working order.

Edit: Been going here for a while now. -1 more star for the Indian lady who seems to hate her job.

Checked out the gym with a free pass. It was nice and clean, but super crowded at 4 pm. I couldn't even get into the sauna because there were so many people just standing around. I waited 15 minutes and still couldn't get in. All the equipment was packed too, so it was a struggle to get to what I actually needed. When I asked the front desk about prices and plans, the lady mumbled everything so fast I couldn’t understand a word. It felt like she wasn’t even trying to get me to sign up. Then she told me about this "amazing deal" that was supposed to be a once-in-a-million chance to sign up for an annual membership only today. Seriously? Who falls for that old trick? Plus, their plans don’t make much sense. The Classic and Premium memberships are pretty much the same price, and honestly, it feels like they’re overcharging compared to other gyms.

Disappointing Customer Service Experience

I had an unfortunate experience at this gym today. To keep it simple, I have multiple gym memberships and wanted to downgrade my plan at this location. Upon arriving around 7 AM, I spoke to a very kind and friendly front desk representative. He did his best to assist me but informed me that only the store manager could handle plan downgrades or cancellations. I was surprised that employees aren’t empowered to manage basic requests like this, but I appreciated his respectful and helpful attitude. Honestly, he displayed better customer service than most managers I’ve encountered.

The front desk employee told me the manager would arrive at 9 AM, so I waited. Unfortunately, the manager arrived about 10 minutes late, which I understand—traffic happens. However, when I approached her to explain that I wanted to downgrade my plan, the interaction went downhill. She repeatedly asked me the same question, “What plan are you downgrading to?” despite there being only two plans offered. I explained this clearly, but her tone and attitude were dismissive and rude, as if I didn’t understand what I was asking for. It was incredibly frustrating and unprofessional for someone in a management position to behave this way.

What upset me the most was that, as soon as I told her to cancel my membership entirely, she suddenly understood my English perfectly and had no issue processing the cancellation. Her abrupt shift in attitude was disappointing and made it clear that she wasn’t interested in providing genuine customer service.

Frustrated by her behavior, I canceled my membership on the spot. It’s disappointing that someone in a leadership position displayed such poor customer service. I feel bad for the employees who have to work under her, as they seem to genuinely care about their job and the customers.

Overall, this experience was enough for me to never return to this gym, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. With so many other fitness options available, I’d suggest looking elsewhere where customer service is valued—especially from management.

No customer service. I was told to come in person Saturday to be able to cancel my membership in person (“it’s the only way”) and then I drive an hour to get there for Carly and Mario to say I have to come back Monday and they can do nothing to support me because their operations manager will not be available to help on the weekends.

I asked if we could leave some kind of note or sign a form since they had me make the drive today and they said “nope we can’t”.

I wish this was a 5 star rating. The gym is incredibly well equipped, good location, should be 24/7 but operating hours are good enough tbh, staff are chill and helpful. My main gripes are two fold. One there are no way near enough sanitation dispensers, and the ones available are always empty even on a slow night. Second there is an IT issue with their computers, multiple times I signed up online only for the staff be unable to complete my registration and tell me to just go ahead and don't worry about it (thank you for that)

Free weights are a total mess. When I want a dumbbells workout, i go to 24-hour Fitness. The front desk took complaint casually, as that's just the way it is. They have 4 -5 guys just sitting around doing nothing. They could do some work. The manager needs to get the place in order. They let homeless in with suit cases and tents. They sit on equipment not working out. They sit watch tv and use computers. Could be hacking phones on the unsecured wifi. Asked for the manager and the girl said I don't know if we have one.

The carpeting is torn and dirty at the facility on Hesperian in Hayward. It’s time to change it to flooring, machines are old and broken and it takes them about a month to repair them. They are constantly out of soap and disinfectant dispensers are always empty. I’m not sure why the facility is not as clean and efficient as the one on Foothill. For the money I pay I expect better maintenance and a cleaner building. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be canceling my membership soon.

Not a great experience for what they charge. A few highlights of my time there:

-Vending machine ate my money without giving me my energy drink. Their response? "Not my problem". Offered no help or refund.

-They started a deal for people in my building shortly after I joined. I asked to be added to that discount since I did qualify. They refused since I already signed up.

-They do a terrible job or keeping the place clean and making sure there's always sanitizing wipes. Sometimes 90% of the dispensers are empty.

-Very hard to quit. When I had to leave they told me only a senior manager could help me end my membership and that person was not there. One of the employees lied and said he took care of it but changed his mind when I asked for written proof of termination.

After being with city sports for over 6 years, I found the best yoga instructor whose name is Rea in this City sport (3 clubs in Hayward) . She taught Yoga classes over the weekends. As I have been practicing Yoga for 20 years, I can tell that she is a good instructor and has great passion for teaching Yoga, although she is 70 years old. NOT SURE WHY SHE STOPS TEACHING in City Sport about 2 weeks ago. I am hoping to see her coming back. She is the only reason that keeps me in this club.

As a long time member of city sports, I have seen nothing but great quality gyms and good customer service from the sales team. However, my last experience with Fernando the personal trainer has left a sour taste in my mouth.

Fernando did not just show lack of customer service skills, but he was purposely trying not to help for some reason. I tried to cancel my personal trainer membership in the gym and When given the opportunity by an associate to waive certain fees on my behalf, Fernando chose not to and asked for a physical card which I then I had to drive home and come to pay it just to be surprised that he had “clocked out” which I understand ( could have been the end of his shift) but when I came in the next day and asked the associate to cancel my subscription, Fernando happened to be completely busy and told me that he would need to check his busy schedule and try fit me in a time slot sometime next week. His actions are unprofessional and immature because he could have connected me with another associate, or freed up some time to help me since he knew how frustrating this situation was.

The manager/ assistant manager Jason from the sales team however stepped in and de escalated the situation and took quick action to resolve this problem by connecting me with another personal trainer who helped me cancel my membership. He called me minutes after leaving the gym and informed me that he took care of it which was the quality of service that’s truly appreciated and hard to find in commercial gyms.

Constant cleaning, friendly staff, gym regulars do their best to wipedown machine equipment after use, which is greatly appreciated by the next in use. Also, even thoo they have a great variety of equipment, which is great, i would like to know how can i put in a request for Sissy Squat equipment? i had been looking the last couple days, if its there, i couldnt find it 😅. They’re all over the place, disorganized, and no two dumbells are ever next to each other. The pool is not really clean. I have noticed that many people don't shower before pool. The sign should be next to the pool at the entrance area of the pool, on the surface of the ground.

In Hayward California, many residents' first language is NOT English, it would be better having a sign with drawings of a person.

It is not hard to manage. However, this club never bother to do the simple work, which can save labor cost.

A very nice modern gym. This gym is one of the newer City Sports. It has all new modern machines plus the standard free weights and benches. The sauna is nice, the pool is good size could be a little wider but it is Olympic length. Locker rooms and showers restrooms are clean

I've been going here for a year, here's what i have to say:

PROS:
- the best commercial gym in the area by FAR
- a LOT of equipment
- a lot of space
- good people, community, and staff
- worth the price compared to 24 fitness

CONS:
- takes 2-6 weeks to fix a machine
- unprofessional staff - they're just there for a paycheck
- not enough janitors
- they need better machines (hack squat, smith machines ; they have variants of that , but not the real deal)
- REALLY busy during the hours of 4pm-7pm (weekends it's not busy at all)

i question the people that “work” here because this gym is 100% always filthy. the weights are never put back where they belong - like ANY day of the week. the equipment is always out of order, broken, or just gross.

I asked the front desk 3 days in a row to give the woman’s bathroom service, as well as the sauna. Trash overfilling to the ground, toilets a mess.

finally after i wrote a review (which was deleted) they finally cleaned out the trash from the sauna (people literally throw tissues, band aids, hair balls, wrappers, and all sorts of debris and trash in here, old water bottles, etc it’s disgusting.) which leads me to believe they don’t even clean it at all.

Whenever I have encountered a poor customer experience, I always walk away from the poor experience without writing a review but this was excruciatingly hard to walk away from. The customer experience at City Sports Club is beyond abysmal and I mean from the corporate office to the club level.

Sam, a District Vice President said to me in verbatim "OUR INTERNATIONAL CANCELLATION CLAUSE AGREEMENT DEMANDS THAT YOU PROVIDE A COPY OF A FLIGHT TICKET AS PROOF OF OUT OF COUNTRY RELOCATION IN ORDER TO TERMINATE YOUR PERSONAL TRAINING CONTRACT". This was a cruel and dishonest attempt from a District Vice President to keep me locked in a fraudulent contract that should have been a one-time transaction.

My mother was visiting from another country so I signed her up for training sessions. The personal training director had assured me that the sessions would be a one-time transaction but the personal training director abruptly stopped working for City Sports Club thus the personal training account was not closed as promised. The account thus transitioned into monthly recurring payments with an over charge of $1,320. It was during my numerous attempts to terminate the contract and recover my funds that I encountered Sam. In order to terminate the contract I provided Sam with 2 relocation documents in the form of utility bills showing my international address but both were rejected on baseless grounds. These were 2 separate documents on 2 different occasions after Sam had rejected the 1st document. On the 3rd occasion Sam requested for a flight ticket. It became clear at this point that I was dealing with an unscrupulous human.

I therefore headed to the club and notified the management on duty about Sam's obstructive and absurd tactics. Shockingly, management's response was "IF SAM SAYS SO, THEN IT IS THAT WAY". I then demanded for a copy of City Sports Club's membership agreement and realized that the very 1st document I had provided was more than enough for Sam to do his job. All of the aforementioned experience spanned a period of about 2 months with countless phone calls and up to about 25 email correspondences. Through it all and as far up to the corporate office, I did not encounter a single voice of reasoning that objected to any of Sam's devious demands. It is therefore safe to conclude that City Sports Club fosters a culture of entrapment through dishonest henchmen like Sam in a bid to steal from their members or how else would you explain a District Vice President casually concocting a flagrant lie in order to enrich the personal training metrics of his district. You should read the review left by Veronica T. on 5/29/2023. Veronica's review confirms an established pattern of corrupt practices.

Being a current member of 2 other fitness gyms I initially found it comical that club members at City Sports Club had to engage with a District Vice President in order to address routine workflows that front desk associates at my 2 other clubs cater to on a daily basis and on the spot for that matter. It now adds up when your business model is that of entrapment. You will require the likes of Sam who are corrupt and not easily accessible to tighten the grip on stolen funds. This place will contradict your fitness and wellbeing goals considering their business practices induces stress. As of this review Sam is yet to do his job and unfortunately not a single manager at the club is empowered to do the right thing because the club management is only empowered to debit.

I was scammed. I was told they were going to have child care, and they never did. They said they had a deal going on and advised me to join at that time because it would be cheaper then joining at a later time ( I'm assuming they make commissions so they lie) they told me the child care wasn't open yet, but that it would open soon. I paid the initial fee and membership for months and never went ( because I didn't have anyone to take care of my kid). Finally, they told me they told me they weren't going to open the child care and refused to give any of my money back.

When you get a tour, it looks huge and like they have a lot of equipments. They lure you in to sign up then you come to workout and find out that no one is having a decent workout at this gym. I mean it’s a zoo! You won’t find a single machine available because they signed up too many people for the number of the equipments available basically they’re like the American Airlines of gyms with the overbooking. And the dumbbells are all over the place and no a single dumbness is ever placed on the right rack. So, good luck finding any pair of specific dumbbells you need! No available empty bench or a fly machine at any time you go in. So much is wrong about the organization and the culture of this gym.

Do NOT go to this gym. I got robbed in this gym and the club service team did nothing to prevent or assist in finding the robber/theft. It looks like an insider crime and it has happened several times in this location from the police.
If you dont want to be robbed/stolen in this club, do not go to this gym.

Had the unfortunate interaction meeting Dan at the front desk today. Apparently there was an issue with my guest pass, I brought my guest in earlier in the week and today there was an issue with the pass, instead of offering us to workout today and figure out the issue later. Dan decided to turn away my guest from the workout. Hopefully some training can happen and the issue can be rectified never had any other issues to date with other staff.

The gym is really pretty and clean however, there is not enough machines for the amount of people that attend. I waited up to an hour just for the stair master machine… that was ridiculous. Every other machine I try to get on has a wait of about 30 minutes. Sauna is tiny, should be a bit bigger.

They seriously need to double up on all workout machines especially since it’s always packed.

The gym is opened right at 5AM sometimes a couple minutes before which is nice. They had old staff who wasn’t properly cleaning but now the place is clean and even though it could have more machines it has the basic equipment you’ll need to get a great work out. The Sauna is by far the best after a nice work out. It gets hot in there and haven’t had any problems at all now. Highly suggest you sign up , people here and the staff are friendly.

Signed up because of the convenience of being close to home. I work early and this is a great way to start my day. Lied about being open at 5AM. It’s about to be 6AM and no one here to open yet. About 20+ cars waiting and others leaving. Will Definitely will reach out to corporate about this. They need to get responsible staff and managers to run this place. Just bait and switch to get you to sign up.

I really enjoy this new location. There’s no carpet! Which if you’ve been to some of the older locations you know is gross. Other than that they have the usual fundamentals found in a large gym and it’s super clean.

Love this Gym! I usually go to the gym on San Pablo in Berkeley but decided to try this one out. This gym is extremely spacious with a variety of machines. They have a turf area for additional workouts. The saunas are also in great shape. In addition they have space for me to do my muscle ups on pull up bars which is a must in my routine. Last but not least they have free parking.

Today afternoon i went to city sport and prepare swimming.but found that the water very cold .i think they didn't open water heater and then have a spa...my god!there are a around black body dirt on the spa pool wall!!
Infuriatingly, when I went to the front desk to complain, a man said you can cancel your membership if you don't like it! I asked his name, he replied no need to tell you, asked his work number, he said no, he doesn't work here! A woman next to her in black called her the manager, but she couldn't do anything either!

The scariest thing is that this person who claims not to work here can actually operate the computer, and then say my name, and say this is your name, you can choose to complain and I will call the police, or cancel your membership! I told the woman in black who claimed to be the manager, I don't know this person, I don't want to talk to him, I don't feel safe here, can the police be there? She said the police are on other floors and you have to find the police yourself! I ask is there a permit to use it here? She said no! ...
I won't be here again !

I just switched from Crunch San Lorenzo which is a huge upgrade, but this location like others is nearly impossible to workout at after 6pm. The weekends are busy, but you can get on a bench or machine without waiting 10 minutes or more.

The gym overall is very clean and people are respectful. The have a solid amount of weightlifting machines and a few squat racks. I come on Wednesday mornings since i have that day off and weekends, but even Friday night it stays packed until closing time.. bummer.

I was so excited to check out Citi sports gym in Hayward off of foothill Boulevard. I walked in and had a free three day pass. They didnt honor that because it had expired so I asked if they can give me a three day pass. They said I had to go online so I did. I Tried to submit it but it wasnt working online. It said I can get a pass at the front desk. This whole process took 25 minutes going back-and-forth with the clueless representatives that had no idea how to get a three day pass for a first time customer I waited so long that I walked out I will never come back. Worst service ever!!!

Gym is not bad but not the greatest.
First thing is that they don’t really open at 5am and others have witnessed this. Staff is very friendly. There is some trash like napkins or empty water bottles around. I rarely see people rack the weights or dumbbells in its place so if you are planning to do some dumbbell exercises good luck trying to find the right weight in 10 minutes. Usually empty after 9:30pm on weekdays and on Sunday after 7pm I rarely saw anyone be there. Equipment is good for beginners and intermediate lifters and powerlifters but not the greatest for much more experienced lifters and powerlifters.

Lies!! Signed up on Sunday. Was told they open at 5 am Monday through Friday. Arrived at the gym Monday morning at 5:05 and the gym was closed. I waited it out until 5:35, no one ever showed up to open the gym. Finally had to leave to go to work, gym was still closed when I left. I waited with several other members and also watched several others come and go once they realized no one was there. If you’re attempting to go early chances are no one will show up to open the gym. Good luck! Called at 8:00 and spoke with someone that told me my only option was to cancel my membership and receive a refund if I didn’t like it. That is exactly what I did. 24 hour fitness might be old but at least they are open when they say they’re going to be. Back to 24 hour I go. It’s a shame. It’s a pretty gym, for now. Can’t see how sustainable it will be to maintain it with the current staff. Unprofessional is an understatement.
