I had a very upsetting experience at the YMCA Copley on July 27 in the family pool area. My son, who is on the autism spectrum and has swimming experience, struggled to understand the swim test instructions. When I asked to step in and demonstrate what he needed to do, the lifeguard refused and made no effort to guide him.
From that moment on, it felt like the staff was acting in a harassing way toward us, constantly watching us, calling out every little thing we did, whispering about us, and denying us simple things like pool noodles without explanation. Even when my son finished a small slushy in an area with no signage against food, staff reacted irritably.
They even asked me to help adjust the lane divider—something staff should handle—and I was accidentally hit by the hook during the process, which was unsafe and completely inappropriate.
This experience was so negative that I have not wanted to return since. The only positive thing is that when I filed a complaint, someone did reply to me. However, I do not recommend this location for families, as the staff’s behavior comes across as harassing rather than supportive.

One of the more expensive memberships for a basic gym in SD, and they match that with ridiculously limited hours and close down constantly.

The YMCAs needs more intelligent staff, Just to educate you YMCA you never ever ever ever ever ever put children/teenagers people in their early 20s who have no concept of how to function in the world to answer your phone system This has been going on for too long, If you want people to JOIN your club then the people that answer the phones need to be adults and I mean experienced adults, obviously ideally over the age of 30 and they actually have to be really helpful I spoke to a little BRAT named Elliot She wouldn't help me whatsoever I asked her for an adult to speak to or a manager and she absolutely would not do that,... A wise company would never allow the least experience and the least knowledgeable to manage the phone system, You are turning people OFF, get wise, get the lazy executives off of their butts and actually truly manage this company.

We do enjoy the gym itself - however - after realizing the experience for children at the Summer camp, I will never send my children there. The very first day of camp, they apparently only had one camp counselor, so during that persons “lunch period” of 30-60 min they made all the kids sit in a small room and told them they couldn’t speak. That they were to “meditate”. No speaking, no play, just sit. For the camp leader’s lunch period.
Frankly for all the ymca has to offer and all that is promised for these summer camps, this is wrong. Very disappointed. We definitely had higher expectations for the Y.

I've noticed that the gym trainers should improve, they know what they're talking about (I think) but they don't know how to train, their training is very poor and poorly done, it's incredible that no one has gotten hurt yet, that's a real miracle. Equipment is good and the staff are always nice and polite

My 2 star review doesn't really reflect poorly on the staff. Most of the staff I have interacted with have been courteous and friendly.
My biggest complaint is with the equipment, which is regularly out of service.
- In 2024 there were only 2 stairmaster machines, and one of them was out of commission for almost 4 months. You can imagine how impossible it was to find this machine empty.
- They recently revamped the equipment, but now 1 of the 2 peloton bikes has been out of commission since 5/19 (It's 6/11 as of this posting). Here's the hoping it doesn't take until September to get it fixed
- I asked about the TRX install in early 2023 and was told they had the equipment on hand, but it took them until mid 2024 to get the brackets mounted for them
Since I've been a member here over the past 3 years, my 2 person membership fees have gone from ~$94 up to $107/mo. I have been shopping around for another gym, and I see other options in Mission Valley with monthly rates closer to $30-40/mo.
If it wasn't a convenient bike ride for me, I probably would have ended my membership a lot sooner.

It’s a nice facility that’s kept clean and well running. In the afternoon, there is an influx of kids of various ages that are respectful and no problem. The YMCA is a community organization and these kids need somewhere to go. They are not loud nor are they crass, They’re just young, enjoying their life with their friends. Quite honestly it’s the intergenerational nature of the YMCA that makes it a pleasure to be a part of.

The whole family loves this location. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Facility is clean and well equipped with work out machines. Family swim hours could help more lines in the pool, but overall very positive experience with Copley-Price YMCA. And they often organize free family events that kids enjoy.

The spring camp extreme staff did not care about my 6 year old when it came to his lunch. I had dropped the lunch box at 10:30 am to give him fresh food but he never received and actually he never saw it. So anyone that works that department should really stop working there....no I am not the karen type I'm a concerned mother and you all are so horrible for not taking my concerns seriously.

This location is awesome. The staff is very cool. I have been to all the locations, and this one is by far the cleanest. I used to complain about all the high school kids running around, but after seeing them acting more respectfully, I'm glad they are at the gym. A lot of kids are less fortunate to have such a great place to enjoy and do healthy activities rather than our on the streets doing drugs. They also just got all brand new cardio machines that are way better than any I've seen at other gyms. Love this place🤟

I never write pointed reviews, but I felt compelled to after seeing the last review by NATIVE SD posted with 1 star. Clearly, this man has WAY too much time on his hands to be complaining THIS much about a gym.
Who complains about a gym replacing all cardio equipment? Like, you literally cannot please people LOL. I for one appreciate when I see my membership dollars being spent on renovations!
This location is huge. Bright, airy, both indoor and outdoor work areas with some duplicates of machines, makes for easy access and minimal wait times. Other locations (looking at you, MV, are dark, dirty, and feel like you're in a dungeon). Here, they supply freshly laundered towels always, have full sanitizer bottles, and I always see someone cleaning the floors or windows when I am there.
The staff has always been very helpful and kind to me whenever I need something; usually for messing up my locker combo .__. Calling these people "not health focused" and "pathetic" as NATIVE SD did is...a choice. Maybe a bit of projection happening there, who knows!
The comment about the bathrooms being under repair, there are literally SEVERAL bathroom locations including locker room, downstairs near the coffee shop, outside facility area, AND near the pools. You will find a bathroom if one is OOO, I have faith!
Anyway, love this gym and the vibes, keep up the good work and take all the time you need for new renovations ;)

Ana at the child watch is awful and should be fired. We got a membership because we wanted an option for our daughter to be entertained while we worked out and the first day we used it she chastised me for walking into the room even though it was past my scheduled time!!! We walked in at 4:02 and there was another mom there who was late picking up her children. Will be canceling our memberships, horrible service. Shame on Ana.

Update: 10/9/24
I cancelled my membership at Copley and they never did it and keep charging me.
I signed the application 3 weeks ago. No one cancelled my membership, no one contacted me about any problems with cancellation.
I just found a new charge at the start of the month. I still haven't received my return.
I am very upset with YMCA work, since there are no complaints about the gym itself, but the management of the organization is very bad. The employees do what they want and no one is responsible for anything. And when I asked to call the manager, they just brought me another employee who does not decide anything.
As a long-time YMCA member, I'm usually very satisfied with the helpful and accommodating staff. However, I had a disappointing experience recently with an employee named Kal. When I requested assistance with parking my scooter, Kal seemed unwilling to help and instead complained to other workers about my request. It took several asks before he finally brought over a manager, who was able to quickly resolve the issue. Kal's passive-aggressive attitude made me feel uncomfortable.
I hope the administration will use this feedback to provide additional customer service training to ensure all members receive the same high level of service I've come to expect from the YMCA.

I am writing this review because of my experience with the swim lessons. So I signed my child up for private swim lessons, well the first day we showed up we were informed that it had been “canceled” and they sent an email out 3 days prior. First off why the hell would you cancel the lesson days before it was suppose to start… the YMCA swim director, was like oh maybe it went to spam…. Um are you kidding me? Do you know how hard it is to get little kids and babies out of the house and that’s your only response? If we are paying for lessons you must call and get in contact with us not send some email which I never even received. I was not the only family affected by this mishap. I saw at least 5 other families showing up for lessons, confused as to why they were canceled, and that’s only what I saw. Lazy incompetent swim director is what I have to say. She literally had no response as to why they were canceled in the first place. Extremely irresponsible and irritating, just over all poor management…makes me want to cancel the lessons all around and use a different YMCA.

The worst experience I've had with a YMCA. I've been a nationwide member since elementary school, but this one is by far the worst. They are literally incompetent and lack comprehension.
Buyers & scholarship holders beware. They have charged my card about $200 over the last two months. I communicated with multiple people to ensure my card wouldn't get charged & a pause was issued. Despite my card rejecting the payments, my bank tells me they continue to run the card multiple times until a payment goes through. They harassed me, claiming I owed them a payment, only to later admit, "Oh, it was a mistake, you did pay..." Yet, they can't communicate when they decide to start charging my card $100 a month? This is insane. Finally put a stop payment on my card for this establishment.
Start your membership at a different YMCA!

Honestly customer service is not good! I felt like I was talking to a robot when speaking to membership, I initially called and spoke to someone super helpful about downgrading my membership they said they would call me back but never did, I called to confirm, the person I spoke to kept repeating the same response over and over, during our membership initiation we signed a bunch of stuff but we were never told we had to give 5 days notice to make any changes or that it had to be in person. They also offered us a two person membership never telling us that the single person membership receives two guest passes (way better deal) it wasn’t until we went to Mission Valley that they shared this better deal.

Why don’t they bring back the basketball courts? I thought the YMCA was a place all about community and allowing for people to better themselves. The basketball courts have been inactive for YEARS! The basketball court being used for gymnastics is not for the community at all. Only PRIVILEGED parents and their kids have access to it. How is that even fair? Everyone who pays for a membership wants to get the full use of it and when the basketball courts have been gone for ages then its a scam. The fact that only kids can use the courts for gymnastics is a SCAM. It’s a way for this ridiculous organization that prides itself on self improvement and community to reap profits. If everyone has access to the basketball courts like it was years ago then no money is made but if they close it down and have parents enroll their kids into this gymnastics program then its a constant flow of income. I dont understand why the basketball courts cant be shared with gymnastics. It doesn’t seem so hard to manage that. People are paying expensive prices for memberships and not everyone has access to the basketball courts? Seems like a scam for us regular people but a benefit for them. If the courts are inactive due to security issues or lack of staff then implement ways to prevent that. People have been paying MORE for their memberships and people deserve to have the full experience of their membership. It just isn’t fair for only the youth to have the entire gymnasium for themselves. A schedule can be made to create a shared space for both regular people who want to play basketball and for the youth who do gymnastics, that is how you make a community! I doubt the basketball courts are ever going to be open again.

Is this the excuse to not fix the stair master machine? Because in that case put a sign on all the treadmills too. The stair master is the only reason I come to this gym and with so many people coming here you can’t have only one available. You have customers paying really expensive memberships and the only stair master you have running doesn’t even work that good. You gotta do some maintenance with those machines instead of putting a sign from COVID. We are wayyy past that. Common now.

Terrible customer service, I was scheduled on Jacky Robinson first and the person i had the appointment with nvr arrived. Then someone from this place called me to set up an appointment for my new membership. I arrived a little bit before our set appointment, this person was at a meeting and the person in the front desk adviced me to wait on the cafe sitting area and that they will get back at me when said person was available. Well the meeting was over and 20min passed and nobody approached me, i left at around 3:20 and nobody has yet reach out. I felt totally ignored by the staff. Such a waist of my time really. My kids were excited for our membership not to mention the drive up there was quite a distance for me to totally be ignored.

The lifeguard in the indoor pool made me and my family very uncomfortable not to mention he was being racist we was the only black family in the pool. It was my daughter birthday . I wouldn’t recommend this place to no one. So glad it’s other YMCA we can go too. Cafe was a mess too staff was talking to each they could barely make coffee or tea. Not happy at this location. All the equipment is run over by groups of kids. Can't circulate through machines or weights because they congregate and hog all the equipment. They're loud and slam the weights. This location does not have TRX hook ups or a lot of the other balance/ body weight assistive devices that Mission Valley has. I unfortunately purchased the Cryo/Massage feature but will cancel because I can't get a full workout at this location...due to the amount of youth crowding the machines and lack of equipment available. The employees here seem overall careless, when asked about specific equipment or lack of towels to clean machines. Oh, and there's only a handful of group fitness classes offered. Better off going to Mission Valley.

Very poor knowledge of everyone that works here. Long time San Diego resident, but new to CH and was looking for a place to take my 2-year-old for activities, especially swimming, as I'm a SCUBA instructor. What better place than the Y, right? Not in this case. I called and asked if they had an open swim and was reassured that they had open swim happening the rest of the day. I showed up, and asked the first lady at the front, and she was like oh yes, open swim rest of day chat with this lady about membership. The membership lady said oh yea, open swim till 3 pm today, let em sign you up. Really glad I didn't sign up and just opted for a day pass; they should have called it the 10-minute pass. Went to the pool and got in, and within 30 seconds, Paul the lifeguard, said no swimming, we have an aerobics class now, get out. He was very rude and kicked us out because he "runs the pool". Put a call into the director that day. The next day in talking to the director, Ray, said that he would look into this issue and why I got conflicting information from the staff, I appreciate the follow-up on his part.

So far I have enjoyed going to the gym. They have plenty of equipment to work out your full body. The place is also very clean, including the restrooms which I really appreciate. The only two things I don’t like is:
1.- The parking structure does not have EV charging stations
2.- Sometimes there are groups of teenagers/young kids who hang out at the gym and they’re just fooling around with the equipment and not properly using it when other people could actually be using the equipment the proper way for exercising
I have no comments on other areas of the YMCA because I haven’t used them, but the pool area looks great.

Very nice gym with good equipment and ample parking. Fair membership prices and more amenities than 24 hour fitness. Staff keeps it very clean and almost all guests are respectful of others. It does get a little stuffy/humid in the workout area sometimes, but generally cold enough for a workout (HVAC design issue, and maintenance too). I raised from prior 4 star rating to 5 stars because they have made some nice equipment improvements and have extended their hours, which is a appreciated! The best fitness value in this area of SD in my opinion.

Joined and cancelled membership within less than 6 months. My family and I are new to the area so I was very excited to see the YMCA close to our home. However, upon joining and attending several times I quickly found this place to be unlike any other Y I have been a part of (not in a good way.) The first several times I went, the front desk check in person ignored me, so I walked right in without being checked in. Much of the staff appears unhappy to be there and uninterested in members, unless it is to scold them about breaking the countless number of rules they seem to have but are written no where. During family swim, my toddler (under 2) no longer wanted to wear her floatie (which I brought from home) The lifeguard told me it’s required for her to wear it- even though I had taken her into the pool before I even bought a floatie, and the lifeguard those times never said anything to me. I asked him to show me where that rule is written- he then told me, that I just need to have her in my arms. The several lifeguards that rotated in to watch during this family swim were constantly getting onto people- for taking pictures (she was photographing her own grandchildren,) not using pool noodles (?,) and accusing (instead of asking) one child of being under the age limit to swim without her adult in the water- yet she was two years older than that limit. They truly sucked the fun out of this swim outing and definitely do not make the environment feel family friendly like other YMCA’s I have been a member of. I also felt very uneasy about the summer camp working staff. As a former teacher, it was alarming to see 2 out of the 4 staff sitting on their phones, not watching the camp kids during water play on the splash pad outside. Another one had headphones in her ears, lounging in a chair with her eyes CLOSED altogether. There was only ONE teacher actually UP, supervising and interacting with the children. And there were two groups of children- around 20 or more children. This is NOT okay. I also just wasn’t a fan of the outside pool being used for lap swim only. There’s zero opportunity for families to swim outside during the summer, which is obviously a summer activity. This place needs work y’all. Extremely unhappy with my experience.

Decent outdoor portion of the gym and considering the current health crisis I’m only willing to work out in an out door setting.
My main concern is the management. They closed the outdoor portion because it was cloudy and may rain? They claimed it rained earlier in the morning and they were letting it dry. It was bone dry when i arrived. Sometimes common sense doesn’t prevail.

Due to COVID-19 they have shutdown, and my finances are now cut tighter than ever. I have followed this company's policies in cancelling my membership, and I have received emails from them over and over regarding how they will STILL CHARGE ME and none regarding my cancellation. How disappointing, coming from a company that "prides" themselves in being known for taking care of their communities.

Wow! How a place can turn itself around. I have been a resident for all my life and know what it means to have a YMCA in our neighborhood. I can finally say that I feel Copley-Price now represents us. Their team is so much more diverse. Their membership management actually calls back, and in a timely manner. And their customer service is truly something I look forward to when I go there. I only have one suggestion. Longer hours.

I love love this place but I wish there was a way to get people (especially kids) to shower or rinse off BEFORE getting into swimming pools. It’s getting worse and worse every summer and it’s only a few years old. They’re constantly having to shut down pool due to “contamination” of some sort in the water levels. And the water is sooo warm it’s like a bath. So when we are taking a Water Aerobics class it’s very hard to not yawn and stay awake.
Aside from pool it’s a great place to get fit and lots of choices of activities for all ages.

I went in the other day with me boyfriend to use the free day pass that they have online, Will helped us and he was amazing! He was attentive, kind, and very informative. The facility was also very clean and nice all around. We’ll definitely be coming back to buy a membership soon.

I swam here for a while on a discounted membership because times are hard. The pool is small but adequate, the locker rooms are kept tighty. When I could no longer afford to pay for my membership I went it to cancel and they said that because I was only 5 days before my cancelation date they would charge me again. This payment will have a negative effect on my life. They claim to be about community, religion, and ethics but this is a predatory practice and I need to speak up about it. I don't think its right despite what was signed I initially, things change, circumstances come up. You guys could do much better.

I love Pickle Ball . I have all these wonderful new friends. I've lost 10 lbs and look forward to exercising every day almost but Thursday and on Thursday I go upstairs and use bicycle and weight room. The staff is very helpful and teachers for classes are great .
Before Pickle Ball, I did water arobics classes . Zumba & yoga. I'm sure when weather is hotter I will do classes again but right now I'm very addicted to Pickle Ball. It is so much fun and great exercise. On Friday morning I go to Mission Valley YMCA and do the Barre Class which is very good for toning, strengthening bones and balance. Wish they had it at Copley then I would not have to drive there at all because Copley is closer to my home. Then I go to Pickle Ball at Copley after the Barre Class at Mission Valley. The people are so nice and very welcoming. I love going there. I also take no medications. Thanks to exercise it is the key to good health. I'm so happy to not have to drive so far to keep healthy since the Copley YMCA was built. Also they have a great coffee shop. Coffee is delicious. Better than Starbucks and price too.

Great Gym I've been coming here daily for a few weeks now, no 12 month commitment or anything of the sort, friendly staff. I had a wonderful experience signing up with Tom who answered all my questions and solved all my issues with a welcoming smile on his face. The only complaint I have is they still use rags to wipe down the equipment instead of papertowels. If they just charged a dollar more a month from everyone and switched to paper towels I would be much happier. But I still gave 5stars because Tom was so kind/ helpful he really made my sign up experience amazing.

Shameful what bad management and ill-trained staff can do to such a beautiful YMCA.
I grew going to the YMCA. I learned how to swim and play tennis at the Magdalena YMCA in Encinitas as child. Always had great experiences and made me think very highly of the YMCA.
No doubt, this is a great facility in terms of amenities and features, but if those amenities aren't maintained, then was it worth the investment?
Compared to other YMCA's, the big noticeable difference with this location is the general upkeep of the Locker Room. I can't speak about the Women's locker room, but the Men's locker room is not well maintained and generally in poor condition. Looking back, in other locations I recall always seeing the cleaning staff coming in and out of the locker rooms. In all my visits here, I do not recall ever seeing an attendant inside the locker rooms.
In general, they have a good selection of group exercise classes and a good schedule. My wife and I did several classes and enjoyed most of them. The only classes I often found lacking inspiration were the Spin classes. So if you are thinking of joining for that, I wouldn't recommend it.
It's a great facility, but not very large. The weight area is a bit tight and it can get pretty crowded. I found myself doing free weights in the outside workout space to avoid the crowds. Not the best option if its cold or too hot.
What finally made me cancel my membership was that my locker was broken into and everything was stolen. The fact that it happened wasn't why I cancelled, but how it was handled is why I cancelled. My locker was pried opened and the initial statements from the staff member were the following:
- "Are you sure that was your locker" : while looking at a broken empty locker*
- "Yeah, this has happened a couple of times in the past few weeks" : So you know it's happening and nothing is done to prevent it?
- "Well there's nothing we can do": Why even have cameras at all? Why check badges? I'm sure people taking there families there want a sense of security.
In my conversation over the phone, the Director offered nothing more than canned and scripted answers. No empathy (Even if its fake!), no solutions and no assurances. They didn't bother looking at the cameras. They just said the police had to do. SD Police in City Heights has bigger things to worry about then locker room theft. I filed a police report, but of course, nothing was done.
For those wondering...Within 30 minutes of me finding my locker broken into, I had almost $1,000 dollars in charges on my debit and credit cards from nearby places like GameStop, Bob's smoke shop and Vons. Whoever is breaking into the lockers, obviously knows what they are doing and they know the YMCA is a soft target.

This place is horrible!
They wouldnt let us in the outdoor pool and then they took the indoor pool and made a tiny rectangle and put like 50 people in it, no one could fit
And when we got into the spa they told us to get out and wouldnt even let us in the indoor pool either
And when we got there they made us sign a ton of paperwork. The soap in the bathroom snelled nasty too! Im never going back!!!!!

Outdoor adult lap pool filled with kids and the filtration system is subpar. Swam for about 1 year and1/2 in a pool I could swear was saltwater, until they cleaned it I was a bit disgusted, then they cancelled the masters program and didn't even notify me.Many members are rude and aggressive. Sorry but kids in diapers belong in a kids pool.

Extremely unprofessional and unprepared after calling numerous time about lowering the courts for my 5yr and 4yr to shoot on. The employee assured me it would not be a problem but when we arrived they did not have the key to unlock the equipment to lower the court in the basketball gym. It’s hard to understand that only one person can have the key to unlock a equipment door. It defeats the fact of being a YMCA if kids can’t play or use the equipment. Should they wait until they’re old enough to get a membership to 24hr fitness, or maybe somebody other than George should have the key. Thanks YMCA for serving your purpose

Child watch needs to re evaluate their workers. The main ladies look like they hate their job and it rubs off on the kids (except forJackie) Copley Price overall is great but until they replace these ladies in the morning I wouldn't suggest drooping off your kids.
