"Above and beyond" is the best way to describe CrossFit ATR! The coaches are great, the members are fun and committed, and the atmosphere is welcoming. I originally went to ATR because my other CF was re-locating so I was a temporary "Gymigrant" there, but I feel in love with the people and the programming. I joined CrossFit ATR at a point in my life where I didn’t know what I needed - I felt lost and uncertain and so incredibly awkward. You know that feeling in your gut when you’ve made a HUGE, life-changing decision and now you have to rebuild? Everything is new and terrifying and exciting all at the same time. That’s where I was in every aspect - job hunting, volunteering, apartment hunting, and trying to find my “home” among the massive fitness community in San Diego.
I’d been a CrossFit enthusiast since I started back in 2015 but love variety and trying new things, so I was open to whatever felt right. Maybe I needed something different?
For over a year I tried out dozens of gyms, including most of the CrossFit locations. There are SO MANY incredible facilities, talented coaches, and effective fitness programs in this area, it can honestly be overwhelming. “Where do I even start?”
Well, if you started here in the Google reviews and want some unsolicited advice from a long-winded internet stranger - TRY CROSSFIT ATR!
Turns out, that “something different” that I needed was genuine, soulful connection with good-hearted, compassionate, and hardworking people.
The community is unmatched because the leadership is unmatched. The owner, the head coach, the general manager, the coaches - they don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk. And they don’t do it for the recognition or the aesthetics (which is rare in the fitness industry tbh). They don’t tear down other gyms or coaches to make themselves look better. They just show up for their people day in and day out with the intention of changing lives. And they DO.
It’s beautiful to witness and humbling to experience.
I hope everyone who’s searching for their new CrossFit home in San Diego (or maybe trying CrossFit for the first time!!!) finds what they’re looking for💪🫶

We were visiting and wanted to take a class before all the kiddo activities. We LOVED our experience. From ownership to the coaching staff to the members, it was so great to walk into a gym and feel right at home.

Joining CrossFit ATR is one of the best decisions I have made! I joined about three months ago having never done CrossFit before. There have been many positive changes in my life because of ATR-I can’t fully express them all here!

The Foundations class is incredibly helpful in learning the basics from a private coach before joining group classes. The coach may shadow you in a group class or two as well based on what is needed. In addition, ATR offers private coaching for any level which you can do along with or instead of group classes (though group classes are so fun, I would do both!). There are also weightlifting classes great for extra practice with strength training.

The personalized nutritional coaching I signed up for was a gamechanger in helping me view weight from a healthy lens and develop eating and cooking habits that can maintain a healthy lifestyle long-term. I have lost weight and gained strength. I am no longer pre-diabetic. More than all that, I fell in love with the act of doing CrossFit and how it makes me feel mentally and emotionally. I am more willing to try new things and fail and try again. Best of all is the amazing community of like-minded people and friendships I’m making. Everyone is trying to be their best selves and keeps each other accountable for reaching their goals while still laughing and having fun!

I got bored with a normal gym and I'm so glad I found this place. The coaches and trainers are all positive and always super helpful. It's such a great atmosphere here that even though the workout may suck in the moment, we're all struggling together and its actually really fun. Also its such a great feeling when I can do a little better than last time. I feel that in this dopamine-ruled desk-jockey world, that kind of sense of satisfaction is hard to come by in the way that its also so beneficial for physical and mental health. I'm beginning my 15th year of Crossfit, in which I've belonged to four different CF gyms. I loved all of them, but ATR is easily my favorite. The facility is top notch, the coaches are fantastic - and really care about the members success, and the programming is phenomenal. What really sets this gym apart, however, is the community. It's like a big-ass family of like-minded people who encourage each other, and the community events that are put on are super fun.

By far the best gym/CrossFit gym I have been to. The community here is second to none and the coaches do an absolutely incredible job of supporting your regardless of your level. Best CrossFit gym in San Diego!

I’ve been to many CrossFit gyms here. I stopped here. Here’s why:

The coaches are top-notch, they help to dial-in our technique. They are present with us in classes, and are super friendly. They also help to find appropriate modifications and regressions to progress our skills safely.

The community is simply wonderful. Everyone is so friendly and supportive. It’s a great environment whether you are a serious Crossfitter, or just new and getting into it.

If you need extra help, they have an excellent network of doctors and experts with people of all different specialties to help solve problems in staying active or optimizing nutrition.

Top notch environment to get fit and stay fit, and having fun while doing it👌

If you’re on the fence, come in and try it!

ATR is a fantastic gym! I've been a member for around four months and am super happy to be there.
Briefly, here are a few reason you might also enjoy ATR if you're in the search for a new gym:

1. Welcoming owner (Adam), general manager (Silas), coaches, and community regardless of skill or fitness level. Workouts are scaled relative to your current level and the coaches will help you improve safely. The classes I attend are led by Alex, Arturo, and Silas, all of whom are excellent coaches.
2. There is a large emphasis on creating a positive community. Adam and his team put a lot of effort into organizing events and fostering a friendly environment.
3. Clean, well equipped, large, and vibrant gym at the Kearny Mesa location. I can't comment on the Mission Valley one as I have not been.
4. Fair pricing relative to the local market. No long term contract. Membership is month to month.
5. Good class availability throughout the day. During the work week you can attend 5, 6, 7am, noon, 4, 5, and 6pm classes. There are also Saturday morning classes and Olympic lifting on Thursday and Sunday.
6. Class size is small to medium. I go to the 6pm classes which normally range from 6 to 12 people.
7. They require a foundations class if you have never done Crossfit before. This is an extra cost and is actually a very large positive and completely worth the money. It will teach you the fundamentals in a low pressure, personal training environment so you are well prepared to participate in classes.
8. Also, the gym just looks cool. There are murals on all the walls and a lot of color everywhere. It's a very vibrant environment.

So, there's my brief opinion of the gym. If you're interested in joining, sign up for a trial class and check it out! There's no harm in doing so, and the sales tactics are very friendly and low pressure. They want you to want to join, not be forced into a decision. I guarantee you'll meet some friendly people during that trial period.

I joined this gym three months ago without any clue about CrossFit—I just wanted to try something new and get in better shape. Fast forward two weeks, and I was hooked! The workouts are intense but so much fun, and what really blew me away was the amazing community. I started at ATR on a 10 pack over 2 months in September, trying to ease my way back into working out after a ~8 year dry spell. Figured it wasn’t a scary “all-in” commitment and I’d gauge my interest. I was surprised how much I missed being in a supportive gym and found myself blasting through the 10 pack, well before October ended, resulting in fully committing…all-in.

The community here is incredibly welcoming, which made me feel right at home. The coaches are knowledgeable, attentive, and always willing to help you improve, whether you’re just starting out or pushing for new goals.

Many class times, ample workout areas, and I can always find parking! The workouts are always challenging but scalable, so you can adjust to your fitness level or the heavy lunch you might have incorrectly consumed a few hours earlier.

I can’t recommend CrossFit ATR enough—it’s the perfect combo of tough training, great people, and a positive atmosphere!

I think CrossFit ATR made me fall more in love with CrossFit. I joined CrossFit ATR back in July 2023 when I first moved to San Diego. Let me say, that was one of the best decisions I have made since I move here. If you’re searching for a gym to join, let me give you multiple reasons why you should join ATR:

1. There are 2 locations! Yes, 2 gyms to work out at! One is in Kearny Mesa and the other, Mission Valley. Kearny Mesa has several showers and a sauna! I have yet to use the sauna but I hear it’s great. At the MV location, there is a kid’s room.
2. Great programming. ATR has great programming that challenges you and allows you tailors the workouts that fit our level of fitness. There is always a modification that you can do if you’re unable to do certain movements and the coaches are great about giving you options. From the programming alone, I’ve notice several changes in my body, both in strength and appearance and I think it’s because of how great these workouts actually are.
3. The Coaches. I have not met a coach I did not like at ATR. They are all amazing humans and are one of the many reasons I keep coming back each week. What I really appreciate about the coaches is that they encourage you to push yourself. I often underestimate my ability to do some of the workouts, but the coaches know this and tell me that I’m capable of more. They provide constructive feedback for what corrections you should make but they also tell you what you’re doing well at.
4. The Community. I’ve been fortunate enough to be a member of 2 amazing gyms since I started my CrossFit journey and I feel like that makes me really lucky. I hear horror stories about people joining gyms and it doesn’t turn out well but that is not the case at CrossFit ATR. Through the community, I’ve met so many people that have become my friends. When I had to have surgery, so many people offered their support and help, I couldn’t believe it. In addition to having an amazing community, we do several fun events throughout the year. If you’re looking to meet new people and make new friends, CrossFit ATR can definitely help with that. Also, we have a kickball team!
5. The Owner. Adam is a fantastic human being. He is someone that will go above and beyond to help members out. He takes a genuine interest in all the members and I appreciate that. He also engages the gym in a way that I don’t think a lot of gyms owners do.

If I ever had to leave ATR, it would be pretty hard. The gym has become my sanctuary. Thank you, CrossFit ATR, for being such a fantastic gym.

Can’t say enough great things about ATR, but here are a few things:

1. The coaches and staff are very knowledgeable and truly care about their members safety and their results. They are always actively coaching throughout the class and are quick to assist when needed!
2. The culture is extremely welcoming and serves multiple skill levels. I came in with some CrossFit experience, but never felt like this was a place that I “wasn’t good enough” for.
3. As someone who likes to workout in the morning and go straight to work from the gym, it’s great that the gym has 5 bathrooms with showers so I don’t have to wait for a shower after my workout. Something you don’t see in most CrossFit gyms or other group fitness studios.

There are a ton of other great things, but you should come try a class and see it for yourself like I did!

I’ve been a CrossFit enthusiast for over 8 years and a member at four different CrossFit gyms, and I can confidently say that CrossFit ATR is my favorite by far! The owner (Adam) and coaches at ATR make you feel genuinely seen and valued as an individual, which is truly rare. The coaches are fantastic—they not only learn your name quickly but actually remember it, which means a lot to me.

The community is incredible, too. ATR hosts regular events that are genuinely fun and a great way to connect with fellow members; it’s such a welcoming, supportive group. And of course, the workouts are great. I’ve seen real progress in all my main lifts thanks to their programming. The coaching is on point, and the atmosphere is incredibly motivating.

I started CrossFit in Florida almost 2 years ago. My spouse got orders to San Diego and I discovered ATR in January of this year. Wow. Just wow. Each and every coach and staff member went above and beyond—to get to know me, my strengths and weaknesses, my goals, etc. They offer so much guidance and feedback to maximize results and make the most of your time there. Don’t be intimidated to jump right in. Scale, modify, walk, crawl, just don’t stop moving. The coaches/staff will gladly help you with any substitutions or modifications for any limitations, injuries, or other barriers that may make you hesitant to walk through those doors. It is hard to find a gym like this. I only show up once a month but every time I do I feel just as welcome as I did when I was there everyday. The community here is awesome and there are all levels of fitness and something for everyone. If you want to compete, you will find people who can help. If you are interested in losing weight you will find people who can help and if you are looking for fun classes and to learn some fun movements you will find plenty of that. They also throw awesome parties. The owner (Adam) is remarkable, I don’t know how he remembers about me that I told him 2 years ago. I've been to several CrossFit gyms in San Diego but always ended up with injuries because the workouts weren't scaled down. The coaches at Crossfit ATR help you adjust the workout to meet your fitness level by offering many options. I love the community feel and the encouragement from other members especially when I am struggling and last to finish a WOD. Crossfit ATR's coaches are top-notch in both Crossfit and Olympic weightlifting, and as a beginner, I have gained an incredible amount of strength in the last 6 months both physically and mentally. I am even starting to get kipping down which is incredible progress for someone like me who had zero upper body strength when I first started. As a new member, this has been one of the least intimidating CrossFit gyms to walk into (in San Diego). Class sizes are small, the coaches are approachable and friendly, the programming is scalable and no one’s yelling “no rep” at you, the equipment and gym space is continuously getting upgraded, it’s always clean. Coaches and members are genuine and are eager to get to KNOW YOU and not just care about your results or PRs. This gym was awesome!
I dropped in for a week while visiting my mom and had the best time. The gym was neat and organized and had really cool graffiti style art on the walls. Literally the best!!! It took a long time to find a Crossfit gym with good, welcoming trainers and this is it! The owner and his wife are amazing, everyone is super friendly, the equipment is great and up to date. You can check out the workouts on Wodify and track your progress as well. Our kids (ages 4 & 6) go to the kids class on Saturday mornings and they love it too. It has helped them with other sports and a huge confidence boost. I started going to CrossFit ATR shortly after I dislocated my shoulder in 2017. I had to eventually to have a massive shoulder repair surgery because of my dislocation. The management/owner cares and is consistently present as well for any concerns and on top of keeping the facility in great shape. The atmosphere is fun yet still competitive and everyone is so welcoming! Wods are programmed at a high level that focuses on a strength portion and then a wod portion which facilitates mastering new skills and still getting that burn we all love. After 5-10 years of no commitment to fitness, I knew I had to do something to get myself going again. Knowing that I never had much motivation at a typical fitness club, I heeded the advice of my best friend. He had been doing Xfit for over 10 years and loved it...and he is in great shape.

I’m gonna start by saying that this place is awesome. As a fat, black, queer person I was VERY anxious about finding an inclusive gym environment and that’s exactly what I found when I joined ATR! I started with the previous owner, Tom, and he made my transition back into this style of fitness as painless as possible. That energy has not changed under the new owner, Adam! He’s always been super approachable, kind, and makes it a point to check in if he sees you.
For the athlete that’s nervous about starting out, don’t be! Everything I’ve done from day one has been scaled to my current capabilities. All of the coaches are super chill and knowledgeable and provide constructive feedback in a healthy way!

The New Owner Adam is a great guy and his priority is taking care of his members. He really enjoys being there and working out with all the members. This is a great community! The owner sincerely cares about his members, their fitness goals, and their overall well-being. I enjoyed my 3 day drop-in here. Adam was VERY responsive and helpful before I even got there. I love that I could see their wods on the Wodify app before I went in because I'm just always curious 😂. Coaches are very knowledgeable and energetic. Members are nice as well. All around good vibes. Will definitely drop by again when I'm in the area.

I've been doing CrossFit for 1.5 years before my old gym closed. I did trials at 4-5 gyms in the area before deciding on CrossFit ATR. The new owner Adam is extremely friendly and responsive, and genuinely listens to members' feedback.

The gym is spacious with lots of equipment and plenty of bathrooms/showers as well. Their workouts are also more challenging than other gyms I've tried and they really push you to be better than yesterday. The coaches are helpful and professional. Highly recommend!

I started attending CrossFit ATR seven weeks ago and I’m feeling the best I have felt in a long time. I suffered from constant headaches due to high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Last year, my doctor told me I either needed to get in shape or start taking blood pressure pills. I
purchased a Peloton and did that 4 to 5 times a week for almost 6 months. Even though I lost 15 pounds, the headaches continued and I hit a plateau with the weight loss.

That’s when I decided to look into other workouts. I tried HIIT classes but that wasn’t cutting it since it was just mostly cardio which I had already been doing. A friend of mine recommended I start to lift weights but I had no clue where to begin since I had never lifted weights in my life. My friend convinced me to join CrossFit ATR and it has literally been life changing. I recently went back to my doctor for my yearly check up and he was in shock with my progress. My blood pressure is back to normal levels and most importantly, my headaches are gone. And as an added bonus, I have lost 13 lbs in the past 7 weeks and 2 inches from my waistline.

I think the biggest difference between ATR and other workout classes is the incorporation of weightlifting and the personal attention the coaches give everyone. The coaches are there step by step with you and scale everything for all fitness levels. I normally take the noon class and there are all types of people there. From 10 years experience to beginners like me. One of the cooler parts about this gym is how friendly, helpful and encouraging everyone is.

ATR itself is very spacious and has several workout stations. The workout equipment is in good shape and they recently put in new floors. There is plenty of parking and 5 individual showers.

Overall, I feel this is the best deal in San Diego and would recommend it to everyone. Special shout out to the awesome coaches who have helped me transform my health and body in just a couple of months.

My girlfriend and I joined Crossfit ATR about six months ago. We were looking for a positive change in our fitness and a strong community. We found just that at ATR. They have experienced coaches, great original programming, and a diverse clientele. I've seen much improvement in my strength, both upper body and lower. I've also maintained my running ability from my prior running program. My girlfriend as found strength she didn't know she could have and loves the feeling of exhaustion after a challenging WOD. She also gets really good attention and coaching ques that help her tap into abilities she couldn't do on her own.

We have also made friends in several of the classes that we do activities outside of the gym. It's great to meet people around our same age with a focus on being active and healthy.

- Coach/Owner Tom is such a great coach, keeps an eye on everyone and really focuses on helping every member with corrections, substitutions and advice.

- Head coach Arturo is a hawk! He honestly sees EVERYTHING! Awesome coach and never lets you slack! He also coaches the barbell club and the weightlifting team!

- Coach Stephanie is always killing a workout before coaching class and has so much energy while coaching that amps everyone (She has the best Jams). She's has an eye for form and offers great substitutions for WODS but doesn't let you slack!

THE BEST GYM THERE IS! I have only recently joined but ATR has far surpassed my expectations.

The facility is always well kept, there are endless options of equipment to utilize with an open gym time slots, as well as many structured classes designed for any fitness level. This was the 3rd CrossFit gym I looked into and I could have not made a better choice. I was out of shape and never did CrossFit before so I have very intimidated.
