During my last visit to the Bay Area, I made a special two-hour drive just to drop in at CrossFit Santa Cruz—because for anyone who truly loves CrossFit, this isn’t just a gym… it’s a pilgrimage.
Santa Cruz is where CrossFit was born, and this original affiliate is a living, breathing piece of its history. Stepping into the space, you immediately feel the legacy—from the equipment to the decor, everything carries the weight of decades of dedication and growth.
I was incredibly lucky to meet and be coached by Hollis, one of the few Level 4 Coaches and mentors in the entire CrossFit world. After over 20 years of building and leading this community, he still coaches on the floor, offering precise and thoughtful guidance—whether it’s to a Games athlete or a 60+ year-old master. That level of care, insight, and humility is rare, and deeply inspiring.
CrossFit Santa Cruz isn’t just a place to work out—it’s a testament to the culture, evolution, and heart of CrossFit itself. Huge respect and gratitude to Hollis for cultivating a space where the spirit of CrossFit lives on, and for sharing his belief in health, movement, and purpose with the world.
If you care about the roots of CrossFit, you owe it to yourself to experience this place.

Everyone at this gym is so welcoming! Super clean gym, and classes ran on time. Coach Hollis and Brian are so knowledgeable and professional. I love the variety of workouts each day. Can’t wait to go back!

The only crossfit that does not welcome people around the world. It seems they were the first crossfit gym ever, really disappointed.

This box gives great instruction, and has great facilities, but the instructors are very serious and exclusive. They'll filter you out if you're not immediately serious about joining or previously experienced. From the other ex-applicants I've spoken with at Seabright crossfit, their experience echoes this.
If you're new go to Seabright crossfit.

Came from out of town and tried to poke my head in without being seen, but coach jumped out and asked how I was doing, got chatting and bought a tee-shirt. Next time I'm around I'll definitely call in advance to find a time to squeeze a workout in. I'd suggest the same to anyone because the class I seen looked quite full.

In all our travels across the world, doing CrossFit and visiting gyms, this is thE ONLY CrossFit gym that was non welcoming. They were “too busy” to allow drop in’s, in and had very poor communication on getting back with you. As a CrossFit professional athlete, I am very disappointed in our community representation of our sport. We are known as a community and should always make room for those who want to drop in or try our sport. Would not recommend based on my experience!

Hollis is quite literally one of the best coaches around. Not just Crossfit. He sets the standard on how to coach athletes. Super relatable and incredibly adept at explaining things in a way that YOU can understand. He does not just regurgitate what to do. He tailors it in a way to make complete sense for you. Great box and well worth your time.
