Inconsistent with policies. I was told when I signed up for the 3 day guest pass to come back and sign in at the front desk. I came for 2 consecutive days but on the 3rd day this guy named Alex rudely shooed me away saying they changed their policies a couple months ago so I never got the chance to finish my trial. Nevertheless I’m glad I didn’t sign up. Horrible customer service overall.

Amazing crew! The staff is always friendly and helpful. This location does get busy most of the time, but if you plan your visit right, there are hours when it’s much quieter. Overall, it’s a good facility with a great atmosphere, and I’ve consistently had positive experiences here.

Too many posers, campers and wanna be players. I couldn't complete my work out because so many people were occupying the machines without really using them. But, its clean.

It is often too crowded in there— but overall I’ve had a good experience. I usually don’t have to wait too too long for a machine during peak times.
In terms of the things I enjoy… the lockers, the fitness classes and the front desk personnel is awesome. They are incredibly helpful and come in clutch when you need a hair tie or bandaid. The dance classes are so fun and full to the brim!
The most frustrating parts of the experience is 1: the sweat drips on the cardio machines that are there for days, 2: they close early on the weekends which is when I have more time to come in, 3: the weights get overcrowded in the evenings— sometimes it’s so busy it’s hard to complete the exercises I would like to do. Lastly 4, I don’t get why they don’t stock paper towels in the women’s bathroom— the dryers can’t do everything.
Overall, I recommend this gym.

Does the music need to be loud to the point I can’t hear my music on my earphones on a normal volume level?
Update: June 2025.
Volume is still LOUD. I emailed the provided email. I paused my membership for almost 1 year and came back to the same old thing of blasting my volume so I could block out their music. People have the option to “select what plays in the gym, thru an app” but can’t have the option to block it out because the music is louder than the headphones being worn. And I’m not going to blast my ears because Crunch Fitness can’t turn down the music 5db.

I cancelled my membership because this gym is not safe—even in the women’s locker room. I securely locked my belongings in a locker, yet someone managed to force it open and steal my wallet, including all my IDs, credit cards, and cash. The thief made multiple unauthorized transactions, which I only discovered when my bank alerted me the next day.
While I was able to recover my money and replace my cards, the entire experience was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. What’s worse is that no one at the gym seemed to care or take my complaint seriously. A facility that fails to provide basic security and support for its members is simply unacceptable.
If you’re considering joining, I highly recommend looking into a more secure and well-managed gym—even if it costs a bit more. I won’t be coming back.

Somehow always crowded even when I go on non peak hours. I always seem to have to wait for equipment, and while I wait, I get to watch someone sitting there playing on their phone the whole time while telling me they are using the equipment. Also, the personal training seems like I am just paying someone to follow me around just to sell me stuff for the hour while not really working out. I live down the street but find myself wanting to drive down to the San Lorenzo location to see if I get a better experience. Or would I be better off going to the 24-hour fitness on High St, I remember having a better gym experience there.

Aesthetically I love this gym. It’s clean, and has good equipment, however it’s always packed. So bad during the week you have to wait or don’t get to do what you planned to do. I wish they would consider charging more and/ or extending their hours to address the overcapacity issue.

The gym has decent equipment and is quite small, which makes it feel busy most of the time. However, the main reason for my 1-star review is that they charged me $75 for one month subscription added with an additional so-called annual fee. I find this extremely unfair.
I approached the manager to address my concern, hoping they would offer some assistance. Unfortunately, they just brushed me off, saying there was nothing they could do. It seems they prioritize money over customer service.
I'm extremely disappointed and would not recommend this gym due to their poor customer service.

This Crunch is very crowded, even in the middle of the afternoon. It's a small space for a gym, so you'll inevitably end up waiting for a lot of the equipment. There's a good and dedicated crowd, but if you choose to join, be patient

Be prepared for long waits for machines, unless you go at 5am during the week, or 7am on the weekends. A lot of members don’t understand basic gym etiquette and take their time on the machines even though people are waiting, and a lot of them don’t use the machine for its intended use even though there are open machines and dumbbells that are meant for the exercise they are doing. I suppose it’s not bad for $20 a month.

This is one of the best fitness places I have ever signed up. I love this place. Among many other reasons, some of the reasons I love this place is that it has a very nice warm and inviting feel, Great staff, clean environment, bright and inviting, new machines, etc.
Even though it's a bit small, but there are a lot of positives which compensate for the size.

The gym does technically have everything you need but it's very small and always crowded. They only have 2 bench press and 2 squat racks. And they are almost always occupied by someone or a group of people. So get comfortable with using the machines although you may need to wait for those as well.
Idk why but they play very loud rap music. I'm not sure if maybe it's because most of the gym goers appear to be high school students here. The little trash bin thing that's meant for paper towels is always overflowing with trash in the mens locker room, and the funny thing is that they don't even have paper towels in the locker room you have to use the hand dryers.
But the price is cheap and I do like the hydromassage being offered here. Staff for the most part are friendly. However the gym experience is not very positive. If the place was not so packed all the time it would get a higher rating but I feel like 2 stars is already being quite generous.

Aside from being crowded, the weightlifting area is rather cramped, and it seems easy for people to bump into you at certain machines since aisles and pathways aren't entirely clear. The open stretching area is slightly awkward as well (when not closed due to classes). Not sure if it's better outside of peak hours.

I’ve had a great experience with Crunch Fitness Alameda. Their classes and instructors are all great - very positive and motivating. Classes get full so you definitely want to register early. I even did personal training with Justin and he taught me a lot about working out as well as nutrition tips. The facilities are always clean. It’s a pretty busy gym, but enough equipment to go around. The price is great, especially with all of the classes I’m doing. It’s totally worth it!

I walked in to see if I wanted to join the gym. I wanted to see the machines and the lay out of the gym. I was a member of the previous gym here and I wanted to see what had changed. In order to look at the gym you need a sign a waiver, sure no problem, I’ll consent to waive any liability to view your gym. The issue is that you also have to consent to emails, texts, and phone calls in order to complete the form. I didn’t want to consent to receive any type of communication unless I wanted to join the gym so I want not allowed to look at the gym therefore resulting in me not joining the gym.

The atmosphere here is great. Everyone here is super welcoming and supportive. The staff are all friendly and always willing the help, the crunchers are also always looking out for everyone, even noobs. Made some cool friends here and a ton of progress since I first started coming in August of 23. Can get a little crowded around 5pm, but c’est la vie I guess. Cam is a great manager and super friendly. All the trainers here are knowledgeable and helpful, but special props to Jay who’s taken me on as a project. Breaks things down without being rude about it, seems to genuinely care about helping people. Best gym I’ve been to in over 15 years, hands down.

For the price, solid gym. Very clean and well maintained equipment, typical of the crunch franchise. A machine that is out of service usually doesnt stay out of service for a long time and I hope they keep that going.
Only downside is how crowded it gets, but if you want exclusivity, then you shouldnt expect to pay 18 bucks a month.

Managers and supervisors are always out of office, hard to make changes into your account, and the cancelation policy is sucks.
Be careful with all the details when you register in here.

Even if there’s a “honeymoon” phase like others describe, this place is not big enough to accommodate a large number of people who want to work out. It’s not scalable if their intent is to have more members in the future. Hopefully they annex another space with more machines because right now every single machine is taken.
Edit:
Not enough room or machines to accommodate peak times. Cardio machines have no fans nearby and it gets too hot once everyone is on them. One of the bikes was broken for a month.

Just like a few other crunch guest have commented, the manager does not return any calls. She literally screens them and tells her employees that she is in a meeting. I have literally been trying to get in contact with her since June and I have called and spoke with several of her employees here. And she has not returned one phone call. She spends more time posting social media videos trying to get people in to this location, than trying to Assist with other things. I have never been to this location and there was billing issues That needed to be addressed on her end.She literally told me to ignore it a year ago and there's still issues. Her priorities are backwards And that's probably why so Many complaints are here now.

Join any gym but this one, and definitely do not give them your credit card info!
Managers Matt & Cameron are completely unprofessional. It took days for them to get back to me about canceling my personal training and not renewing and they still charged me anyways even though I gave notice before the deadline!
The gym is super small, often crowded. 98% of it is machines and the 2% of free weights only have one set of each variety.
The bathrooms are always gross, nobody is cleaning them or restocking the soaps.
Don’t be like me and give it a chance. I should have listened to everyone who joined and immediately left.
Absolutely not worth the convenient location.

First off, they make it very hard to cancel the membership. You cannot do it by phone or email, must come in. I went in and was told they could freeze my account until December just in case I changed my mind. I thought okay I might. I never did go so I emailed the rep who gave me the info about freezing my account. She then asked was I sure, I said yes, then she proceeded to email me that I had a balance. I emailed back asking how is that possible if my account was frozen. She said Crunch requires a 10 day cancellation notice. No where in the email or in person did she ever mention this. Avoid crunch, there are too many complaints about this gym company.

Crunch Alameda Gym monthly price is from $12.99 to $32.99
There are two different locations 2min walking distance from each other. one is the gym the other location is mainly for classes eg cardio, yoga, etc. love the gym! 1st time today, the atmosphere was great!
Crunch did a great job knocking down walls and making it much more spacious than a different gym that was there several years ago.
12- 2- 23
I recently cancelled my membership at Crunch for the following reasons: It was always to many people when I got there for my liking. I rather for the gym to be on the 1st floor rather than the second floor. People stayed on one machine for ever. People don't rerack their heavy weights!
To me all of that became problematic. And for that I took away 1 star. Sooo yeahh, am out!

It’s an affordable gym in the area, which is hard to come by. The staff is great - friendly, and the trainers use gym etiquette in regards to equipment and space usage!
However, as others have mentioned, the space this Crunch occupies is entirely too small - even when it’s not crowded with people, it’s crowded with machines. As much as I hate to see places go out of business, I REALLY hope they intend to lease the space party city is about to vacate next door. It would be an amazing gym if they had a separate area/location for classes (which they do), a separate area/location for weights (where party city currently is would be ideal since it’s not upstairs), and a separate area/location for cardio. That’s the only way I see this being sustainable long term.
Oh, lastly, there’s not a smith machine, 1 leg press, 2 squat racks, and a large portion of the cardio equipment wobbles when in use (it needs to be checked/leveled frequently).
Other than that - great place!
**side note - I managed gyms in my former life after college, so I tend to view gyms from a management perspective instead of a member perspective).**

I've been going to this gym pretty regularly and it's got its ups and downs.
Pros:
Clean and new. Most people clean up after they're done. Many cardio machines. Good amount of free weights, and plates, decent amount of benches. I like their music choices generally (personal preference). Price stands alone with its value in the area.
Cons:
Weight machines have a strange levering mechanism for the seats, making most of them feel very weird and moving the tension from the desired points. Space is just barely too cramped, awkward to move around the weights and machines areas when it's moderately full.
BIGGEST CON:
For a location in an area as populated as Alameda/Oakland having only TWO SQUAT RACKS is frankly ridiculous. I've been to other smaller gyms (even other Crunch locations) with half the population density have TWICE as many racks. These racks host by-far the most popular compound exercises of modern times and as a result command the highest demand of any other set up save for free weights. They are always in use, often with other lifters nearby already waiting next to use them. Just one more rack would greatly alleviate this issue.
Overall decent new location with some strange equipment choices.

New and clean gym. Excellent new equipment. In addition to the human crowds as others have noted, some of the machines are spaced very closely on the floor adding to the crowded feeling.
They are going for the fun party atmosphere instead of a classy feel with exceedingly loud music. Noise cancelling headphones are a must.
One unexpected benefit is their 2nd floor balcony—really nice place to step out of the crowd and noise between sets.

I had high hopes for this place. I was really excited for the classes. They made it seem that there would be plenty of classes and options when I first signed up. Now there are only two classes (yoga and pilates, which both I love) but they are only in the mornings and ONE evening in which I can't attend due to prior commitments. I work 9-5 and can't go to the classes in the mornings. It would be so awesome if they could provide more availability in the evenings! Also, the gym is PACKED every time I go. I usually go late around 8:30 PM. Pretty bummed about this. The staff is great though.

Place is always too packed , people hog the machines and socialize I can’t wait til the honeymoon phase is over so I can get a good workout there it’s a nice place just wish people went there to work out and not socialize. Also the hours are not that great most gyms are open for the early risers like 5 am and stay open til atleast midnight , not everyone works a 9-5 this would also make it less packed if there was more time windows to work out …. They should extend the hours to make the people happy

The gym itself is great, if a little crowded. It would help if there were an extra squat rack and an extra heavy bag, but more equipment is always a plus.
However, the group classes in the main gym area just get in the way. The instructors confuse useful instruction with just yelling or making obnoxious noises over and over again, which is impossible to ignore since they use a microphone connected to the gym's main speakers. I have no idea why they can't just talk loudly, since the gym isn't too loud.
More than that, it makes if impossible for anyone not in the group classes to use any of the equipment in the "HIIT Zone." Heavy bags are completely blocked, there is no where to stretch before working out, and it limits free weight exercises to just the gaps in between machines, which is extremely cramped.
Gym would be great if they just moved the group classes to the group training room. Until then, it really makes it unpleasant to work out here at high traffic times. I've already left a handful of times cause I realized the group class was happening and I wouldn't be able to do my planned workout.

1. Once the class before mine finished there was zero time in between classes and I mean not even a single minute. People were still entering through the door when the instructor started giving directions about the first exercise.
The result was pure chaos, people running for mats and looking for a spot to place them.
2. Speaking of space, I am not sure why there is a booking for the class when more than half of the people from the previous class didn't leave. I understand that some might of booked both classes but I highly doubt all of them did. This made the class very overcrowded and uncomfortable without enough space to work out properly. But let's say they all did book two classes, then they estimated the capacity of the space wrong.
3. The class itself was extremely rushed by the instructor with them saying things like “we have no time to do this for a minute it will be 30 seconds”
4. Abou the instructor...99% of the time their “instructions” were “Look at me” and “Watch me”. How exactly can we all see you in an overfilled class with so many people? You didn't even introduce yourself or at least say hi, nothing, so we didn't even know who is the instructor. It was absolutely impossible to see especially if you are in the back.
After the class I decided to share some of my thoughts with the Crunch representative there, in a very friendly manner, thinking they might be actually looking for opinions since they just started and might not have it figured out yet. Unfortunately, it felt like they tried to brush me off with an “I have no time for this” attitude. That's why I am sharing my experience here, maybe it will be better received this way.
I am not giving up since this location is very convenient for me and maybe it's because it's new.
One star for location and one because I have hope it will get better.

I'm Skyla. A gender-fluid individual, and I've been searching for a club that does not allow me to feel ashamed of how I look.
I'm so thankful I'm one of the Founding 500!
Looking forward to joining your club as often as I can!
