Just joined a few weeks ago, absolutely love this gym. For cheaper than prices at other gyms you can get access to city-wide crunch fitness’s, classes like spin and yoga, and access to great trainer alike Lyndsay.
Did a PT session with her to work on shoulders and hips, and ended the session being able to squat deeper than ever and do a power clean for the first time in my 25 years of life. Can’t recommend the gym and Lyndsay enough!

Crunch Polk is a solid mid‑to-upper gym: it has character, decent amenities, and a lively vibe, but it also shows signs of strain in operations and crowding. It’s not flawless, but for many people it’s a worthwhile place to work out.

This is a mediocre gym. It's basically fine but extremely crowded.

But oh man, are they awful. Here I am thinking I canceled my month-to-month gym membership and months later I'm getting calls from a debt collector about $404 (seemingly equivalent to multiple months of membership). Who does that?

I paid the balance to get it out of the way, but how I ended up here remains a mystery to me. Irrespective of whether Crunch's behavior runs afoul of California's consumer protection laws (still TBD), I suspect any reasonable person would consider this unethical. If you feel obliged to treat your customers like this, is it really worth being in business?

Moving to SF, in the process of signing the lease and checking out gyms. Got a free day pass at Crunch. The guy didn’t allow me in. Apparently there is a very fine print in the email - must already have a new id with SF address or a lease signed. The guy didn’t budge - amazon or walmart deliveries don’t work, moving orders also - “There is nothing in between only id or a signed lease”.

I lost time, didn’t get my training, they got one star and lost a potential customer. Question to crunch - whatever antifraud system you have, is it worth it? Why putting something like this in fine print and not openly?

P.S. btw same rule at Live Fit but they tell you that right away on their website. They got me in after I asked by phone if any other confirmation works.

Wont ever come again until this guy EARL BURKS is FIRED.

Came with my partner to try out the local gym once using the guest trial. We went to the reception and showed them the necessary documents including proof of lease. They then told us to wait for some manager whose name is Earl Burks. After some waiting this guy Earl came to us and asks me to show him the lease AGAIN even when the reception guy did it already. Confused but still trying to follow process so I tried to pull out the PDF from my email chain with my landlord. Not even 10s of waiting this guy came from nowhere said “PDF can always be edited”…… sorry what????? I asked him why he made the assumption that I edit the document. He said he’s not assuming. Well then why said that.

BTW the whole convo feels very condescending. Hey we are the customer and he literally talked down as if he’s the boss. Why the hell he’s there????? Totally not competent and helpful.

We were actually pretty impressed by the gym and I was originally opening to pay for it even if trial doesn’t work out. But this guy completely ruins the experience. I would feel so uncomfortable to get membership if he’s still there.

I’ve been training at Crunch Gym and overall it’s been a really good experience. The space is clean, well-maintained, and has a wide variety of equipment—plenty of machines, free weights, and functional training areas so it never feels like I’m missing anything for a workout.

The staff are friendly, approachable, and helpful whenever you need guidance. The group classes are a huge plus—energetic, fun, and motivating, especially when you need an extra push.

The vibe is upbeat and inclusive, and I appreciate that the gym attracts people of all fitness levels. At peak hours, it can get a bit crowded, but that’s expected in a popular location.

Overall, Crunch makes working out feel less like a chore and more like an experience you look forward to. Definitely recommend it if you want a mix of good energy, solid equipment, and a supportive atmosphere.

I recently did my first ever personal training session with Coach Lindsay and it was fantastic. She’s very broadly knowledgeable and was able to help me with hip and ankle mobility, some progressions to get my one arm pull up, and with very specific exercises to improve my deadlifting and squatting form. She’s obviously very passionate about both lifting and coaching and she’s super nice to hang out with!

Yep, the best classes! I have a gym and a pool at my residence. But, I find classes to be a nice addition. The monthly fees are very reasonable, and towels are included. They are trying to up their personal training game, but that would not be for me. In the end, they have something for everyone.

It’s a cool gym with a unique building and clean equipment. However, the main problem is that they are oversubscribed on memberships and it is packed constantly. It can be hard to get access to the equipment, particularly squat racks and bench press.

The salesperson was very rude and told me, “Don’t come back!” after I chose not to sign up.

I was going to get a 1-month membership, but found out the minimum is 2 months to get discount. Since I have a vacation coming up, I decided to wait. Very uncomfortable experience.

This kind of customer service makes it a place I wouldn’t recommend.

This happened to me too, just like others have mentioned. My cancellation was never processed, and I only realized months later that I was still being charged. Make sure to double or even triple check if you're cancelling—don’t just take their word for it.

Giving one star only because the gym itself looked great and had solid equipment. Unfortunately, the customer service was awful.

The front desk guy had a bad attitude from the jump spoke to me like I was a bother and told me to wait for someone from “management” with zero explanation. I waited 30 minutes with my friend (who’s already a member), just to be asked for my proof of residency for the third time (guy at the front asked me twice). The manager finally arrives, talks down to me, questions why I’m even there, mocks my response, tells my friend to give me a tour. Seriously?

For context: I’ve been at my current gym in SF for two years and was simply exploring other options for a change of scenery.

I later got an email about packages but no clear info on regular monthly memberships. Overall, the experience was unprofessional and uncomfortable. Won’t be coming back.

Crunch if you don’t want people to try your gym out, just say that.

I’ve been training with Lyndsay for the past few months, and I can’t say enough great things about her. Every session is challenging but fun, and she always mixes it up to keep things interesting (and keep my muscles sore). What sets her apart is that she takes the time to understand your goals, limitations, and even your mood on a rough day. Whether we’re working on strength, endurance, or mobility, she adjusts and pushes just the right amount.

If you’re looking for someone who knows their stuff and who will make you healthier, stronger and more knowledgeable about fitness overall, I highly recommend reaching out to Lyndsay.

Very, very interesting gym in a beautiful building. There's a large upper balcony area with solid cardio equipment and a good amount of machines/free weights/power racks. Movies play on a large projector screen, so that's a plus too.

I moved to SF three weeks ago and was looking for a gym to work out. Then, Crunch Fitness advertised a three-day free guest pass on Instagram, so I applied for it. After receiving the confirmation email, I went to check out the gym on Saturday morning.

When I arrived, the front desk staff told me they only offer a one-day pass, not a three-day pass, and directed me to the manager. The manager then said that guest pass activation is by appointment. I told him that wasn’t clear and, since I was already at the gym, I hoped to work out that day.

The manager then added that guests can’t participate in group exercise classes and that I needed to prove I was an SF resident. Since I had just moved from LA, my driver's license still had my LA address, but I showed him my SF address on a DMV document, along with delivery receipts from Amazon and eBay. I even offered to show my SF address on my car insurance document or verify it through a phone call with my landlord, as I’m renting a room from an old friend and don’t have a lease agreement.

However, the manager still said I hadn’t provided sufficient proof of SF residency and that the only way I could use the gym was by paying a $35 day pass. I can't help but feel that this Crunch advertisement on Instagram is a scam!

Very unfriendly to this out of towner. Unreasonable guest rates and trials "to be fair to members" while being unfair to people considering a move to San Fransisco, or becoming a member of this national franchise. But the fact that this is a national gym people might want to try is overlooked in the $35 per day trial pricing.. But, I wouldn't have even written this if a homeless/unshowered looking man at the customer servise desk hadn't 'agreed to disagree' with me about this. But being met at the desk with the same mess that is on every street in San Fransisco is unagreeable to me

Pros:
Atmosphere. It’s a pretty unique gym and can have a nice ambiance on the very rare occasion it’s not at full capacity.

Equipment functionality. There isn’t a bunch of equipment, especially for how busy it is, but I do appreciate that things rarely break. Even when a piece of equipment is under maintenance, it usually is back to being usable pretty soon. I've had other gyms that will leave things as out of order for a couple weeks.

Cons:
Incredibly busy. You’ll rarely find a time where this gym doesn’t feel like it’s hitting peak capacity.

Dark. Although the ambiance is cool, it can be hard on the eyes and can make it difficult to see the number of pounds weights are with the black on black in the dark. Also if you care about form, there are some spots with poor lighting in front of mirrors so it can be hard to judge form sometimes.

Internet. This one is pretty big for me because I enjoy listening to music while I workout and doing ab workouts I find on YouTube. This place is a black hole for cellular service (at least with my major provider) so I have to rely on their WiFi. And boy does this thing not work. It’s worked maybe 4% of all of 2024. If you’ve ever forgotten your headphones when you go to the gym, imagine that but consistently every time you go. I don’t exclusively workout at this location so it’s always frustrating to return to this one and suffer through their chosen music or the silence of my headphones while trying to stay motivated for a workout. I’ve brought this up to them months ago and they said they knew about it and were working on it but nothing has changed.

Price. The price is pretty high. I get it’s San Francisco so it’s more on par with some of the other gyms around but I’ve told people from other areas what I pay (with a discount) and they’re dumbfounded at how expensive the crunch membership is here. With all these other cons, it’s really disappointing they continue to gouge their customers.

I started my personal training program with Anthony in July this year. In my opinion, Anthony is the best trainer due to his extensive knowledge, personalized approach, ability to deliver results, and ease of working with him. Before working with Anthony, I had no experience in bodybuilding and was worried about lifting heavy weights on my own due to the risk of injury. Anthony has demonstrated exceptional knowledge in bodybuilding, particularly in utilizing compound exercises. These exercises require an experienced professional like Anthony to ensure proper execution due to their complexity, which helps in effectively training the targeted muscles. In just two months, I’ve seen improvements in both my physical appearance and strength, proving that Anthony delivers the results he promises. He tailored the program to my fitness background, lifestyle, and workout frequency, accelerating my progress. Anthony is also very easy to work with and shows respect to both his clients and everyone he meets at the gym. I highly recommend Anthony as a trainer.

The internet has been failing now for more than 2 months (I’ve notified the receptionist multiple times). Is slow and flaky so not possible to listen to music and there’s no signal there so can’t use my phone’s internet either.

Also some trainers reserve a huge space only for one client for up to two hours during peak hours, seems a bit selfish. I’m ok if they reserve one space but easily four people could workout there.

I really hope they can solve these two issues soon. I’ve been a client for almost two years now.

I'm leaving a review for Lyndsay Pullem, who has been working with me over the last few months. I was looking for a trainer who had domain expertise in strength movements (bench, squat, deadlift) and their ancillary exercises.

I was referred to Lyndsay and she has been fantastic. Not only is she accomplished herself when it comes to power lifting, but is great at explaining the nuances of movements/body mechanics, providing actionable advice to improve technique, and introducing ancillary exercises that lead to improved overall performance. She's kind, patient, and always has a great attitude. I can't recommend her enough!

Amazing gym. I've been going over a year now. It used to be a fancy theater, and it still has the main movie screen on which they still play different movies every day. It also has some of the ornate old-theater details and super high ceilings that add to the experience.

If you get a chance to try some personal training, Lyndsey was great; she helped me get clear on my strengths and weaknesses and gave me different ways to work on them, and she also taught me some things I've been wanting to learn, like proper form for deadlifts, etc. It's really clear she genuinely cares about her clients and their fitness goals.

I really hated this gym. As a bigger woman looking to lose weight, I found the space to be really intimidating and judgmental. I would be in the middle of using equipment and have people come up to me on numerous occasions to ask rudely “are you done yet?” instead of “how many sets do you have left?” The gym was always super packed and full of influencer type people. I go to a different gym now where there are women of different sizes and now feel I can workout in an emotionally safe space.

Would not recommend but unfortunately there’s not many full service gym options in the Polk area - wish someone would turn the Lombardi sports building into one.

1. Very crowded with no natural light inside, which makes it feel more claustrophobic. Size of women’s changing room is laughable for how many members there are.
2. Nobody told me about the $89 annual facility fee when I signed up. I was briskly given two pricing options verbally, neither of which mentioned anything other than the initiation fee and monthly fee and only later found out about the facility fee from the front desk.
3. Went to my first class today and it felt very chaotic. Instructor was late arriving, didn’t bother checking whether anyone was new or explaining what equipment was needed. The room was so packed that the emergency exit and fire extinguisher were blocked (possibly because the instructor doesn’t make sure everyone there was actually signed up), feels like a safety hazard. Couldn’t really hear or see what the moves were.

I love this gym! I was a member when I first moved to SF 7 years ago. Then I moved to another neighborhood and sadly canceled my membership. I’ve now been back in the neighborhood two years and have been a Crunch member again! The space is beautiful and I love that a movie is always on, especially if I’m doing cardio. The price is not bad and includes lots of great classes by awesome instructors. I used to hate spin, but Jake’s class made me love it. ALL of Andre’s classes I’ve taken are fabulous. You get a great workout and he’s so funny and has great energy. I’ve now been doing personal training with Lyndsay since January. I wanted to kick my strength training up a notch to feel confident on my wedding day, and I definitely did! Lyndsay is a GREAT trainer! She listened to my goals and helped me achieve them. So many people noticed the results and asked me what I had been doing. I have continued to train with her even though the wedding is over because I love our sessions so much and feel amazing after them. It’s nice feeling stronger! I highly recommend her.

★ 4

I’ve been coming to this Crunch location for a several months now and have some thoughts.

First, I ONLY come here for the spin classes. You can’t beat the price. Spin studios in the area are at least three times the cost. What’s better is the classes are great quality. I’ve spun with Rally, Samantha, Charlotte, and Shermineh, and they each bring a uniquely fun energy to every class, so it never feels repetitive. I hope the GM reads this because they need to know they have a killer group of instructors on staff. (I only wish the clocks in the spin room were in a different location, like on a side wall. When you can see the time it feels like the class goes by slower and you want to die. Lol.)

Second, and it’s the only reason I’ve knocked off a star as well as being the reason I only do spin classes here… this gym is CROWDED. I don’t even attempt to do full body workouts because it’s packed almost all the time, EXCEPT in the early morning. It’s not the gyms fault really, and it’s a wonderful thing for them, but it leaves me wanting to return to FitnessSF or consider Equinox. If either of those gyms were closer I’d pay more money to go to them because they never felt claustrophobic like this Crunch does.

I do recommend this gym, though! The classes are well worth it.

This gym sets a new standard for fitness fun! I travel a ton and have visited over 169 different gyms all over the world and this gym had me smiling the whole time. The blend of old theater architecture and modern fitness functionality was incredible. I had to make a video about my visit.

https://youtu.be/veujanA108Y?si=XIVNSmawGusSec6t

And of course, this is a popular gym, peak times will be pretty crowded so try to visit outside of peak time if you want to enjoy the space. Don't rush your workout, take the time to check out all of the architectural details.

Crunch Fitness did a great job with the layout considering the space and equipment restrictions, I had a great chest and arm workout and watched School of Rock as a cool-down.

It's a nice gym but bear in mind it's really crowded at peak hours. They also offered a 3 day trial, so the whole point was for one to do a trial but the person that showed me around the gym just automatically assumed I would sign up for the gym even before I even got started on my trial period. When I clarified that I had wanted to finish the 3 day trial before I decide whether to sign up for a gym membership, he appeared unhappy. He also tried selling me a "special discount" if I signed up on the spot, which was basically already available to the general public on their website. I didn't call him out on it, but it was a dishonest pitch and that didn't go over well with me.

Unlike other crunch locations in the city which have an amazing uplifting culture, this one is full of the kind of pompous, entitled, rude clientele I’d grown tired of dealing with at Equinox and Fitness SF.

Whoever made this happen needs a raise. A vibe of a gym. I’ve been to the Yerba Buena & Chestnut St locations - they don’t compare to this location, feels like a different brand. Really great atmosphere. Favorite gym I’ve been to recently.

Been using crunch over the last few weeks and I’ve enjoyed it so far. It’s one of the most unique places I’ve ever worked out. Just being in the theatre brings another element to your routine gym experience. Membership cost aren’t crazy expensive, compared to other places around SF. You’re looking at $90 to $150 per month, depending on their current specials.

It can get a little cramped in the free weights area. Peak hours can also feel a little overwhelming too. But I do like the amount of running equipment upstairs. The towels and routine cleaning of the equipment is a plus as well. Overall, give Crunch a try if you’re looking for a gym home and some theatre nostalgia!

Way too crowded, not enough machines, changing rooms way too small. They're a bit hamstrung by the layout of the building, which is cool, but doesn't make for a very usable gym during anything but totally off hours.

This gym is ok except there is no air conditioning and there are spotlights pointed at most machines. It’s like working out in the summer with the sun beating down on you.
Maybe some of the staff can try doing cardio at this gym and see how uncomfortable it is.

You can’t cancel the membership here, and get hit with load of random fees. Looked for 30 mins on how to cancel it, and you have to submit a support request and wait for them to approve it before you can cancel (this is hidden super deep in the site). Friends have had the same issues.

I was a member here for 5 months, and had a terrible experience.
Firstly, after you are a member, they hit you with so many hidden charges, you have to literally chase them about what these charges are and why they weren't mentioned to you earlier. They literally charged me facility fees after I cancelled my membership. I tried to talk to the manager, but he refused a refund. So I asked if I could continue my membership for the year, as it was paid for, but they did not agree. They literally asked me to restart my membership and pay all the fees all over again. I literally felt unsafe having my credit card on their file.
Secondly, more often than not I have had really bad customer service, they are mean or just fail to reply to your emails. The manager is quite mean.

Clean gym, everyone re-racks weights and wipes down equipment. Really like the downstairs turf area with squat racks and monkey bars. It’s a bit small and gets cramped in peak hours but that’s life in SF. Movie theater vibe is a bonus and it’s nice to watch some classics between sets.

Many elipticals are alway not running well. Maybe 2 work fine . Also I see 1 person going around cleaning and towels. But see 3 to 4 sales reps. Not a good look for the gym. Imagine if they gave 10 % of there tim to help out with towels or helping the cleaning crew would be very welcome. I'm looking for more team work to make to gym better. Then it will be a 4 star.

Kicked me out at 8:00pm on the dot on Sunday. Restrictive hours and gym was fairly busy on unpopular workout times. Good selection of weights/machines though.

Updating to four stars since they apparently now have 5 squat racks, which is cool.

I find this gym concerned only with making money and will try to squeeze every penny irrespective of whether the gym is closed due to pandemic or you have training sessions that your trainer convinced you to buy but disappeared on you or if you have an injury and need a break from membership. Very inflexible. They were not willing to refund training credits bought just before pandemic. Past two years have shown us unforeseen circumstances but this gym is unwilling to budge. They try to hide behind the idea that the training credits are bought with the gym and not the instructor but then it should be the gym selling you those…not your instructor.

They continued to charge my credit cards for few pandemic months and asked for proof of trying to contact them when there was actually nobody at the gym to answer those calls during pandemic. When you go to the gym to try and talk to the management nicely, they just shoo you away.

Even before the pandemic, I found the yoga class to be too crowded and the one of the yoga instructors was creepy.

Ok gym; friendly(ish) staff; extremely entitled crowd.

Weight floor is entirely too small and cramped while the aerobic area sits empty most of the time.

The (immovable) benches are several inches taller than virtually any other I’ve used, making it impossible to brace your feet into the ground for chest exercises.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Crunch Fitness. I froze my membership in October 2020 due to Covid and the limited services being offered. This freeze was confirmed by a Crunch employee. They later closed the gym and when they reopened again in March, they unfroze my membership without informing me. I showed them the confirmation email that my account was frozen, but they refuse to honor it. I am still trying to get reimbursed for this charge. Crunch Fitness is extremely disorganized and does not want to admit to its billing mistake. I would recommend you go to another gym that honors its promises and does not take advantage of members during the Covid situation.

A) Months for Crunch to acknowledge a cancellation request.(many, MANY emails and calls required over the last five months in order to cancel)

B)Crunch refusal to refund an unused training package they were unable to honor due to closure from mid-March to Mid-September.
They are still arguing I am a member and that the package is on "my account" ?

Update on Feb 2021
C) still ongoing ! We are looking at months!
Had to open a claim on my credit card.
Review pending - case to be closed at the end of the months

Crunch statement to my credit card: “ they never heard from me”
Sighs

My situation is far from being an exception- check other reviews.

Update 04/2021:
Credit card dispute closed in my favor.
Was refunded fully.

Took some dedication !

Attempted to bill me for an annual charge despite informing me that my account was on pause and despite the fact that I have not even been allowed into the premises for working out at all in the new year.

Was told that I would get referral credits for two people that I referred, and then when I asked about them, they said it was just a favor that they don't do anymore. Truly disappointing, and would encourage patrons to avoid this location and the management's misleading business practices.

I recently switched from the Union St location to this Polk St location and loving it so far!

The gym is clean, open, and fun (considering it’s an old movie theatre and they play movies on a big projector screen). Around Halloween this year they played scary movies constantly and it made for such a fun atmosphere while working out. Not to mention the architecture of the old theatre is beautiful and still intact.

They are also strictly following COVID CDC and Crunch HQ guidelines so it feels very safe. I asked a front desk worker to ask two members to wear their masks properly and he did so promptly and kindly. It made working out there a safe experience during a very serious global pandemic. There are cleaning stations everywhere and multiple staff cleaning constantly.

I highly recommend this Crunch location! Not to mention there are plenty of coffee places nearby to grab a pick-me-up cup after a morning workout.

Not your typical gym interior, this one is housed inside an old movie theater with gilded ceiling and columns.

Update:

After half a year here I just didn’t jive with the place. The management could care less about you. Also, there is no natural light inside here - I really hated it after awhile. Plus if you’re there between 4-8 pm they blast the class music so loud throughout the whole gym your bones are rattling. It gave me such a headache.

Member for 2.5 years. Great classes and very nice staff. I am writing this to go over some of the complaints I have read below.

1: the locker rooms: this is a landmark building. They cannot tear down walls or significantly change the design of the building. Just to make plumbing repairs to the locker rooms took months of waiting for permits to go through. Perk: bath towels are big and fluffy!

2: equipment: they have a bit of everything. Yes, it gets crowded during peak hours. So does every gym in the city. Also, if someone is using a piece of weight equipment that you are interested in, politely ask if you can work in with them.

3: staff: always pleasant, even when I have seen members be a pain. Classes do fill up...you can sign up on line. Don't complain at the desk if you arrive 5 minutes before a class, and don't get a spot.

4: trainers: yes, if you are 'fresh meat', they can be a little aggressive (in a nice way) because, it's their job. Do use the introductory session to get some tips. If you are in your 30's and you are doing the same stuff that you did in College, it might be time for a change. And guys, please train your legs once in a while. To me there is nothing weirder than a buff upper body and two sticks for legs.

All in all, I have been very happy.
