Worst staff service I’ve experienced

Extremely disappointed and frustrated. This gym charged me twice for my membership — which is basically fraud — and when I tried to contact them, the customer service was terrible. No one from management responded or took responsibility, and I was completely ignored for days. I finally had to call a different location, and they were the only ones who actually helped me by reaching out to corporate to start my refund.
This whole situation felt very sketchy and unprofessional. Makes me wonder how many other members are being overcharged without realizing it. Be careful with this place and check your bank statements if you’re a member.

Last time I went there was only one usable bench near the dumbbells out of 4. Two were under maintenance and someone had moved one to a squat rack. They’ve been broken for a week. I spent 15 minutes out of my 45 minute workout waiting for a bench. Fix your equipment!!!

If you just want to work out and don’t care about the quality and atmosphere this gym is for you. This is a basic gym at a “premium” price. Most of the equipment is out dated. The recent renovation work is shoddy and you will always see a contractor “fixing” stuff. Showers and bathrooms are not well ventilated. Poor equipment layout that blocks pathways. Not to mention the poor selection of group fitness classes. This place ranks way below planet fitness. Good show!

I had a terrible experience at this gym and I want to make sure others are aware. The staff was incredibly rude and unhelpful when I visited. I was interested in signing up and getting a day pass, but the staff member I encountered was dismissive and showed a bad attitude. It was a weekend, so I couldn't even speak to someone from memberships. The person I spoke to took my information and then told me to leave. I have never been treated so poorly as a customer. I believe there are probably other gyms with much better staff, but this one was by far the worst I have ever encountered.

Had an incredible experience at Crunch thanks to Justin. I’ve been traveling this summer and can say with confidence I haven’t interacted with any gym staff as helpful as Justin. Unlike staff at other gyms I’ve visited, he treated me with respect despite the fact that I’d only be in the gym for the week, as well as showing me around the facility to make sure I could take advantage of everything the location has to offer. Crunch is lucky to have people like Justin that make the first steps I take into the facility great every time.

Arrivé à 5h30 du matin pour un day pass. Tres bien reçu, formalités qui durent 5 minutes. La salle est vraiment très bien. Pas mal d’équipements. Serviettes à disposition de tous. Très propre. Je recommande !

Been a loyal member of this gym for around 10 months, and I can't sing its praises enough! The staff here are incredibly friendly, the classes—mind-blowing! Personally, I'm obsessed with the pole class and aerial yoga. Plus, the equipment is top-notch, and the atmosphere is always buzzing with positive energy. No complaints whatsoever. Highly recommend!

Cheapest gym in the Marina and not too crowded compared to other Crunch gyms in the city. Always very clean and safe environment. They just updated the floor plan which is much better for floor workouts, moving the cardio room to the 3rd floor.

I wanted to leave a note and let you all know that Aren Minter (general manager) was extremely helpful and gracious this afternoon at the Crunch fitness on chestnut street. I'm sure positive messages like this compound over time so I wanted to do my part and make sure to shed light on Aren’s great work!

Sept ‘23: Decent gym. Feels like a hotel gym but member-gym scale (to be honest). Very limited by square-footage. Close-by so am a member, but if alternatives existed I would switch. Can be much better.
———————
Sept. ‘23 (update): Great location, can run to the water after workout.
Oct. ‘23 (update): Gym layout restructure, more turf space at entrance, equipment spaced out better. More space to walk & equipment distribution makes more sense. An actual 8+ point functional training rig, (the thing with multiple resistance stacks, takes diff attachments), just had a 4-point one before that was always occupied. Definitely better than before, feels more like a full gym (though still limited in many facets).
late Oct ‘23 (update): Location brings it up to 4 stars. Jogging by water on a sunny day after workout, unbeatable.

I do not go to this gym, I came in after my shift thinking I had access because I was sold on an upgraded gym membership at my home gym in Santa Rosa, because they were the ones that told me it included access to all Crunch locations. This location was not included in my plan because it is one of the few non-franchise locations.
The only reason Im making this a positive review is because the manager there Aren was a great help in explaining the complicated gym plan my home gym sold me and what my options were for workouts for when I'm in San Francisco for work. He still let me in for the day for a free workout and it's clear to me he runs the place well with how clean the place is. Now I might consider going here.

Horrible, horrible gym. Expensive, small, awful trainers, and overrun by loud weight-slammers. Don't attend the classes - they're a joke, and typically run by people who are completely unqualified. The "free personal training" sessions are a scam - once they realize you won't sign up for their $100 per-day sessions, they will cancel your remaining sessions.
The gym is filthy and run-down, machines are regularly broken, and the yoga mats are falling apart. That'd be fine for a cheap gym, but memberships regularly cost more than $100 per month. Complete madness.
Avoid if possible.

Love that they stay open until 10:30, it really makes a big difference. I also appreciate that they have 2 flat and 2 incline bench presses unlike some other nearby gyms. I think this is one of better Crunches in SF overall!

CONSTANT STAPH INFECTION
My partner and I have realized that we have gotten Staph infections from this gym several times over the last year!!
I was hospitalized over Christmas last year after getting a MRSA infection here. Literally sat in a hospital bed overnight on Xmas Eve (and they didn’t allow visitors due to COVID) because I needed intense medication to stop the MRSA.
My Doctor and I are convinced it’s from doing floor workouts on the mats (the front left area when you walk in). I let the front desk know and nobody took it serious, so I asked for management and he said that he would bring it up during their team meetings.. I’ve still never seen that area be cleaned and we’ve gotten staph multiple times since. It’s clear they aren’t concerned with safety.
My partner has it AGAIN after visiting the gym since being back in town the past week. I haven’t been to the gym since we got back and we’ve made the smart decision to cancel this membership today.
We go to the gym to live healthy lives, not risk them. Sad that our neighborhood Crunch is no longer somewhere we can safely workout. MRSA is no joke and if you get an infection from Crunch on Chestnut, make sure to seek medical attention before it gets worse.

I’ve worked out at crunch for 5+ years and generally enjoy the offering.
They don’t have an effective process to review incidents though at the gym. Client safety should be the most important thing at a gym.

In a little over four weeks of membership I am very happy to note that I have lost 8 pounds and over 2 5 inches off my waistline all while maintaining good muscle tone. To say that I am thrilled would be an understatement. I have done this by cleaning up my diet, cutting back on my wine consumption and taking 4 to 5 classes a week. The Gyms are kept very clean and the staff is really lovely. Why only three stars?
After taking many fitness classes over the past 35 years, there seems to be (especially in the past 5 years) the 'idea' that we should train like athletes vs training to members needs. My reality, slow and steady wins the race. And it works for me! I have found a couple of really great classes but I have also experienced a few bad ones. Note to Instructors: making the class harder, faster and sometimes impossible does not make it better. Every member should be able to get through a class and be able to do every move. In many classes, at least a third of the members seem very out of shape. Most members will never complain because they think that it is their fault. I joined this Gym for only one reason to feel better and to look great in my clothes (and without them..hehe). Granted, it's working for me on my terms but I do feel bad for many members. Note to Corporate: try and work towards classes that make your members the 'star' and not your instructors. In the end, I don't care about what they can do, only what I can do. Thanks!

Made it an enormous hassle to pause my membership when I had to leave the State for a month. Continued to bill me after I called to cancel, and called me twice a day to harass me over $64 dollars rather than refunding me after repeated emails (including before the billing cycle) and not using my membership for over two months.

Signed up with Crunch right before the second lockdown (November) and can't believe how lucky I got with my new gym. I typically focus on weight and some cardio and this gym really has it all. Deceptively large (at least looking in from the street), having 3 levels with lots of equipment makes getting an on a machine very easy.
On top of that, the staff is AMAZING. Someone is always cleaning in there (and I've seen those pros work very hard to keep the experience safe for everyone every single time I've been there) and they leave plenty of sprays/paper towels to take care of machines yourself after you are done. On top of that, the staff at the front and Jade (the GM) are phenomenal to talk to and really care about their members.
If you're considering getting back into the gym now that things are opening back up, please give these guys a shot. They're working overtime to make this gym awesome and you'll look forward to going to the gym every time like I do.

Don’t join this gym. When they reopened in September they sent and email on Friday and charged the monthly fee everyone the following Monday. Not giving enough time to cancel the membership or ask if one felt comfortable going back to the gym. When I called to cancelled they said that they were busy and I should call back in a week. They refuse to refund the monthly fee. Additionally they charge me the annual fee even though I was only a member for 2 months before the pandemic started. Terrible customer service.

After signing up in February 2020, Covid immediately shuts down the gym operations. Luckily Crunch paused membership. Fast forward 8 months and Crunch is threatening to send its members to collections for late fees. They are calling their members about late payments but never once called to share they reopened. Everyone is struggling here, have some compassion instead of rude threats to your members.

DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS CRUNCH. I had the most terrible experience with them. The general manager Rob (George OConnor) totally decieved me and told me one price and charged another one after getting my card information. I have been requesting for a cancelation for 2 weeks and have been ignored by him and cruchms email, which is in the contract. I went there twice in person to check on my cancelation and he was rude and said the membership was canceled but declined to formalize that via email. Still no money back. Terrible customer experience and lack of professionalism from Rob.

Signed up for a membership and was promised if I cancelled within the first 5 days, I would get a full refund. I proceeded to cancel after day 3 and was assured I would get my refund within 7-10 business days. It is now business day 14 and all I've gotten from the Operations Manager is that the approval process for cancellations takes a bit of time. Are you serious? This gym organization is a joke. Make sure when you cancel your membership that it actually goes through before they scam you.

Small but local. Music is usually playing too loud. There is a revolving door of trainers you see for a month at a time. Then, a new one who is even more cocky than the last rolls in. The people at the front desk are usually friendly. Only one squat rack which is an issue when people decide it's a good idea to do bicep curls there.

living in the marina, this is probably my least favorite location out of the three(chestnut, union and polk). mainly because it is tiny and offers less equipment than the others. the small size tends to make it overcrowded.

This is my regular gym, so obviously I like it, but I mostly chose it for its convenient location rather than any particular feature.
Plusses:
- I've rarely had to wait for a machine despite it being a smaller place (two stories but really only one floor of cardio and weights with space up top for classes)
- Some of the treadmills have TV screens so it's a helpful distraction from the fact that you're running :)
- I've done decent spinning classes here - blacklight is fun
- They have beverages and power bar type things for sale - I don't get the bars clearly but it's nice to be able to grab a vitamin water before leaving
- They have a good magazine selection of mostly picture-based magazines perfect for bouncing on a treadmill :)
Minuses:
- The trainers are really aggressive about trying to get you to sign up for personal training. I feel awkward being rude so I've ended up having several 'free fitness assessments' done, which is really just telling you what number and type of personal training classes you need.
- Classes can be intimidating - everyone seems to know what to do (in custom ones like 'Chisel') and they're always nearly full.

It's not the best in terms of facilities but the people are very nice and helpful. I always wish for more air circulation and more space. The spinning room overheats quickly and many of the group classes are crowded too. I highly recommend the Monday night spinning class and the Tuesday Weigh Hard Cardio.
Week nights are usually empty starting at 9PM. I'm guessing you can find my fellow marina-mates out on the town.

I go to the Chestnut Street Crunch Fitness a couple times a week, usually around 6AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays. Every now and then I'll go when the place opens on a Saturday or Sunday. I think it's a very solid neighborhood gym. You could do a lot worse. I've been a happy customer for more than a year now (as of August 2013) and I plan to stick with the place.
At first I was worried this gym would be too hip for me or too much of a scene. After all, it is in the Marina. However, at 6AM no one seems to pay much attention to anyone else. The majority of the Lululemon clad women are busy at work on the Stairmasters, Precor machines, Treadmills, and to a lesser extent with personal trainers or lifting weights. The majority of the college t-shirt clad men are busy at work on the free weights or weight machines, and to a lesser extent on the cardio equipment. Yes, the crowd here is on the younger side -- I'd guess the median age to be about 32 -- so if you're 50 you'll be significantly older than average, but when I go it's business time with almost no chit chat.
The free weights are what I'm most interested in, and I'd call the selection here OK, but far from great. It's pretty solid for upper body workouts. There are four standalone benches, two bench presses, one incline press, and a Smith Machine, which people frequently use for bench pressing. Plus, if you're into machines, there are a couple of cable machines and others for upper body work.
The free weight selection is worse for lower body workouts. There is only one power rack, for example, so if someone else is using it to get their squats in, you're out of luck. There is only one relatively small area in which you can do Olympic lifts, the selection of bumper plates is pretty thin, and people doing TRX or working with trainers often use up some of the space you could do Olympic lifts in.
I like the trainers and the desk staff. Management keeps the place clean and well lighted. All in all, it's a very solid community gym.
