Crunch Fitness on Union Street is a solid gym with a lot to offer, especially if you're looking for a vibrant, no-frills workout spot in the heart of SF.
The equipment is well-maintained and there's a good variety—plenty of free weights, machines, and cardio options. It can get a bit crowded during peak hours, but that’s expected in a city gym. If you time it right (early mornings or midday), it’s much more manageable.
Staff is friendly and helpful, and the vibe is energetic without being overwhelming. There’s a nice mix of people here—everyone from serious lifters to casual gym-goers—so it doesn’t feel intimidating.
The classes are a highlight. From HIIT to yoga, the instructors bring good energy, and the schedule offers decent variety. If you're into group fitness, it's definitely worth checking out.

Rude front desk. Never experienced such experience in all 4 states I’ve lived in all cross the United States from any major brand gyms. Even Crunch’s own employees in other states and other locations don’t behave like this. Shocked.

Avoid. I suffered an injury and no longer could use the gym facility. They made it impossible to cancel my membership, at times telling me I need to cancel in person. I was hospitalized and bed written for several months, canceling in person was not an option. They are now pursuing collections against me for $290.
Jonathon Martinez is a terrible manager. He’s had the opportunity to do the right thing multiple times but refused to acknowledge my calls and emails.
Terrible business practices.

Friendly and helpful staff. I forgot my wallet after asking to buy a drink. The staff member suggested they could pay for it and I could just Venmo them. I went ahead and passed on the drink but the willingness to solve my problem was not overseen.

This is an ok gym, typically extremely crowded right after work.
Generally, the front desk service can be hit or miss. Some staff can be friendly, but I've been actively ignored by multiple staff who will chat together even while seeing that there are people waiting to speak to them.
Recently, I tried to inform them of a broken machine that people were trying to use which was unsafe and they were slow to address the issue.

Nice facility and machines but.. Overcrowded and yet the sales reps are extremely aggressive to sell more memberships especially if you go in to try it out or to take a single class. At what point does the gym simply get too crowded to use! I think we’ve passed that point.

I like Crunch, but the yoga class with Chris S has a really negative energy. He comes across as mocking and condescending, and he seems upset about something, which doesn’t align with the spirit of yoga. I’ve taken his class three times because the 6:30 PM time works for me, but his attitude makes it hard to enjoy. My friend also stopped going to the class due to his constant mocking and rude comments. I’ll need to find another class at the same time since the negativity is too much.

They advertise 1 or 3-day pass to try the gym but they wouldn’t honor it because I didn’t have a CA-issued id with me. Asked for a lease to prove that I indeed live in the city.
It might be their policy to only allow locals to get a trial pass but it’s not smart and they just lost a potential customer.

Just went in to inquire about a tour.
Was rudely pressured by Robin to give I'd and sign a waiver and then refused to give me a tour of the facility, forced to have a staff member contact me after garnering my personal information to tell me basic rates.
The arrogance, for no apparent reason, the hostility at my interest in seeing the space along with hers and Earnestos unbelievable show of disrespect have shown em exactly why neither I nor anyone I would ever send there would want to use this gym.
What worries me is how they got my personal information in their system. What these haters will do to abuse it.
They had better delete that information IMMEDIATELY.
It's traumatizing to have such hateful people represent a gym.
How do these snobs live with theirselves.

Been coming to this gym for 3 years now and I love it. The staff is incredible and kind, the other patrons are friendly and the gym is spotless. In a city with few all purpose gyms - crunch is the best for its location and price. Love the union st staff the most

Small but has most things you need! Pretty similar to the YMCA or neighborhood small gym. Treadmills are really out of date. Also there is no AC so for hot days it’s unusable, even the fans aren’t great for when the heat rises to most of the equipment on the 2nd floor.

Gym is very clean, classes are fun and make me sweat, and members and people working at facility are very helpful and nice too. Shaun at front desk didn't hesitate to help me and did it with a smile. A member of the gym also helped me during class and also saw i needed help after class and helped me again. Made me feel very welcomed and especially that they didn't ignore me when I needed help.

Equipment’s good; gets repaired fairly quickly. Love the skylight.
But the STAFF. Whyyy are you in a customer service role // sitting at a front desk when you can’t be bothered to smile or say hello to patrons? Half these folks barely acknowledge your presence as you walk in — they can’t even be bothered to scan you in, so they just leave the scanner up and play on their phone.
Honestly this sounds ridiculous, I get it. But I just can’t stand folks in customer facing roles who have zero customer experience skills.

After their recent renovation, it seems that the new staff are not as competent as their predesossors, nor as friendly. You might see them watching videos of their phones or just chilling on one of the couches set out for patrons. It's not as clean, and they often run out stuff like towels.

Been to four gyms in SF in the last year, this one's the has the most maintained/ functional equipment; weight stack rails are lubed, all pins and carabineers are intact. Looks like the staff has all changed and improved as well, they're more welcoming. Most importantly, this facility is CLEAN, they have an excellent cleaning team who I see wiping ever corner, step, bench, rail and behind and under all machines. Its something that I didn't know I cared about till I resigned up with this gym. My only suggestion with this place is they can improve on equipment placement, I like to look in the mirror to improve my form. Alternative solution, get more mirrors 😉

I booked a 120-min long gym session in ClassPass in this gym for 1pm. I was there at 1:25, and they didn't allow me to work out, because apparently I have to arrive not earlier than 15 mins after 1pm and no later than 1:15pm!
I've been using classpass for different gyms for the past 3 months, and gyms never care when your booking starts - I've been coming 2 hours early or 2 hours late.
Horrible experience, never coming back.

If you’re into a chill yet active exercise experience, check out Crunch Gym for satisfaction. Here is a no-pressure, reassuring, and comforting work out center. I tried the one at 1725 Union Street in the Cow Hollow area of San Francisco.
The manager, Rob, was so eager to set me up and address my short-term needs. He and Margaret made sure the paperwork was care-free. Member card in hand, I went to the spotless locker room, which, truth-be-told, has sinks that look like they’re in an upscale Union Square hotel (good soap, good towels.)
Then it was up to the weights. They are well-racked and secured. All the free weights and Nautilus machines are logically arranged. Sanitation zones are within close reach and feature spray not sounding as if it came from a medical lab; it has the French perfume sounding “Lavender 256.”
In fact, nothing has a rough edge here. You can work out hard, but feel easy.
In my gym back home certain members ask to “work through,” which is a polite term for barging in between your sets to save time. With Covid that is not advisable, as you should clean up before and after you lift. So, it would really take up more time. At Crunch, a member, in soft tone, asked where I was in my cycle. I said three more sets, and he started up on another machine. His affability made me offer to stop and go on another station. Manners are contagious.
And manners are about care for others, and that’s what Crunch does best – for your health, your development, and your feelings. Their poster boards proclaim, “No judgements,” but I judge Crunch a winner.

1st, was told the wrong price when I was signing up. After I checked/confirmed the price was higher than I was looking for (20 seconds after I was charged), I was told my charge would get refunded. I called a 2nd time, and was told the same, my refund was in process.
The third time I called, after I was charged again for a membership I was told would be canceled 2x, I was told refunds can only be handled if cancellation requests are submitted by email... so they charged me twice when I was told multiple times previously that my charges would be cancelled.
Unbelievably poor experience here....

For being in a small city space this gym has everything you need to get a good lift in. The gym is very clean and is abiding by all health guidelines. I met Derick & Kevin the first time coming here and they really helped me get started and set some personal goals. There is a good group of people working here that will take some time to introduce themselves and help motivate you.

TLDR; Manager Rob missing basic Customer Service skills.
I have been a member for over 5 years. This past week was the last week of membership which expired few days ago post covid extension. I am in the process of renewing with my home base on Polk but decided to check out the Signature Branch on Union in the interim to make up my mind on the location and if the All Bay Access membership is worth it. Showed up at the front (expecting to pay drop-in*)let them know membership expired. The Front Desk (who happened to b awesome) let me know I can go workout. I tried buying a drink to support the branch and the manager waves me over. Rob looked me up and tells me I need to renew with him or go back to my HB. Pointed out that employee waved me through, I am already in touch with home base membership and have committed for today, driving to this location. He let me know he’s the boss of this branch and if I wanted to workout I need to pay ($35 plus drink). Manager has many options at his disposal in this situation but decided to disregard Crunch values or the long standing relationship I’ve had with Crunch. Be better man. Stop worrying about your quota and concentrate on building relationships with your customers. Could have instead sold me a PT or inspired me to change HB or reinforced the Crunch values by staying cool.

This gym is run incredibly poorly. I requested to cancel my account in april 2020 and recently got a call that they want me to pay 250$ for months during which the gym was closed. This gym is dirty, always packed, the staff was rude, the general manager is unresponsive, and the billing department refuses to provide any proof that their charges are valid while threatening to send a notice to collections. Stay away from this crunch, its the worst run gym I've ever been to.

I like Crunch gyms overall and have been a member off and on for about a year but this location is horrible. I switched to the Polk St location (only .2 miles away) and it has been a radically better and safer experience. I recommend you go there instead.
I’ve reached out to this Crunch branch to discuss their COVID regulations (and their violations of them) on multiple occasions with no response. I also raised my concerns about gym members not following mask rules (that are clearly posted within the gym and announced over the speakers at regular intervals) to the staff and they refuse to enforce their own rules. According to Crunch headquarters all gym members must wear their mask correctly (over mouth AND nose) and to not remove the mask at ANY TIME except to drink water. I was told by Alex, a front desk worker, that there is nothing they can do to force members to wear their mask correctly. That’s untrue according to Crunch HQ. They should be asking members who don’t comply with those guidelines to follow the rules or leave the premises. Alex told me the general manager, George O’Connor has told members it’s ok not to wear a mask if they’re exercising and 6 feet away from people. This is scientifically inaccurate relating to how COVID is spread and it also is a violation of Crunch and CDC guidelines. There are multiple gym goers at any point in time working out without a mask on properly. It makes the workout space extremely hostile and unsafe. Not to mention this location is very small which only exacerbates the mask issue considering it’s very hard to distance yourself from other gym members. In their defense the gym is very well kept, clean, and there are cleaning stations everywhere.
In contrast, today at the Polk St location, there were two members not wearing masks correctly and when I alerted the front desk worker he immediately asked them to wear their mask correctly and they complied. It was much more comfortable to work out in that environment and I felt safe.
Not to mention the front desk staff member, Alex, does not wear his own mask properly. Whenever he speaks it slides down his face and he is standing directly in front of you talking with his mask falling off. It’s unsafe. I’d also like to call out I’ve had multiple female friends of mine who have been to that gym mention that Alex has made inappropriate comments to them about their appearance and their outfits. He is not fit for this position.
I’d love to contact Crunch corporate about this situation and alert them to the state of the Union St Crunch but have been unable to find information. If anyone knows a way to file a compliant let me know.
FYI - I emailed the email below after I wrote the review like the owner said but never received a response. Great customer service!

AVOID THIS GYM. They have poor organization and commutation. I canceled my plan during the lockdown btw feb and Mar and now I am receiving a bill of $300. Why does someone would still pay without going to the gym for the past 8 months???
I called someone at Union street facility and they told my plan was canceled successfully 8 months ago. And now I am receiving a bill and they said that if I don’t pay I will be sent to the collection, the receptionist lied saying that she had my Social Security Number threatening me that they would send my info to the collection. Then you charge me after the gyms open up, and blame Covid that is not good buisness practice. Then on top of it, its taking weeks for a refund over your own mistake, when you have an email documentation of my cancelation.

This gym has no billing department. If you want them to keep charging you when you are no longer a member anymore, then sign up with them. I stopped my membership months ago and I’m still getting charged every month. I sent four emails and they did not respond. I even went to the physical store to talk to the manager. He told me that I need to send them an email because they cannot do anything at the gym.
I’ve also heard from other people that they had the same problem.

Watch out -- akin to Comcast, they start you out at a low rate ($60/m) but then after you are a regular customer, they surprise you with an unexpected price hike (get you here about 6 months in). I've gone to this neighborhood gym for years - it's friendly, convenient (close to my home) and provides all the gym options I need since working out is not my favorite thing to do. I use the gym for maintenance vs. body building - and this CRUNCH has two floors with plenty of machines so there's seldom any waiting or delays in my exercise hour. Plus, this Union Street location has fewer 'Marina Bros' strutting their stuff, which is typical of the general character of the street (vs. the CRUNCH on Chestnut).

I can easily recommend this place for people who work/live in the area and people who are interested in personal training. The gym is maintained well and also clean. In fact, every time I go in I see the cleaning staff working. The personal training staff has been such a pleasure to work with. My fiancé and I haven’t gone to the gym in year and were a little intimidated with walking back into the gym. Once introduced to Ryan & Ava, we knew we were in good hands. They took the time to explain the process, help create nutrition plans for us, as well as explain what we should be doing at the gym when we aren’t participating in our personal training sessions.
I’ve been working with Ava for a couple of weeks now and have never felt better. She has been so kind and understanding of my fitness goals. She creates workouts for me based on the specific areas I want to target. Ava has been wonderful and has upbeat and enjoyable energy. I look forward to all my training sessions with her, even though I know my body will be incredibly sore after we work out. If you’re new to the gym and want to learn from an exceptional trainer, Ava is your girl!
In conclusion, Crunch is pretty great. We go to a couple other locations, but Union is the one we frequent the most. I can’t say enough wonderful things about Ava and the personal training at Crunch. Investing in your health is the best investment you could make.

Talia's spin class has amazing music and she gives such a high quality workout in just 45 minutes. I look forward to her class which is rare for me to say. She has so much energy and somehow makes the 45 minutes fly by. I love her!!
Ben's killer crosstrain is an hour of pushing yourself to new limits. Lots of blood, sweat, and curse words will be let out during this hour-long class. You'll leave the class feeling accomplished and tired!

I joined this gym because it was within walking distance from my house. The good thing about Crunch is they have a bunch of locations. I can walk to 3 of them within 1 mile of my house. the downside is this particular location doesn't have too many benches or free weights. Its mostly machines and cardio equipment. also if its busy, it is beyond hot in there despite the "Big Ass Fans" they have constantly churning overhead. I'd recommend it more for girls since they have many classes you can take(spin, bootcamp, TRX).

CRUNCH (SF, Union St.) DOES NOT HONOR their word. I had made arrangements for the 7-day free pass (as advertised). They said that they'll honor the pass knowing quite well that I am visiting from Illinois (with the intention of moving out here in the Summer). We had confirmed this via E-MAIL before I left for SF. We had even set up an appointment to meet. Everything was good --- I arrived for
the appointment. Even did one session. However, a few hours later I got a message on my phone that they will NOT honor the 7-day pass. It is BAD BUSINESS to renege on one's word. No subterfuge involved. My ID clearly indicated ILLINOIS residence. When I move here this Summer --- I will find someplace else to go.
