Gayle V is an excellent trainer. She is very insightful and sensitive to my needs. I appreciate the variety of static weight machines due to a disability. Thanks for being there

I love being a member at Curl Fitness. From the very first day I starting working out here I felt welcomed and included. The staff is incredibly kind, the coaches are dedicated and fun, and the overall atmosphere is happy and positive. I always look forward to going to the work out classes and feel like I have found a great community here! :)

Pretty ran down. Overpriced and just doesn't deliver... The old model really is antiquated and the club has failed to keep up! PF is a much greater value and the structure is customer friendly with better, up to date equipment... Hands Down a Better Option! 'PF AG'

After cancelling my membership and being refunded for months I was incorrectly charged, I am being charged for a membership at this place AGAIN! I explained that I was hoping not to do a stop payment with the bank because I know that hurts small businesses, but with the level of incompetence in how billing is handled, that is the only option now - and the manager even agreed.

7/2/25:
The past couple of months have seen positive changes. The environment is less chaotic, employees are friendlier and seem happier, and some of the dangerous equipment placements have been rectified.
But what I'm really responding to here is caring management and a fantastic trainer.
When I posted my original review the manager, Catherine, reached out immediately to hear my concerns. And instead of making excuses she asked me to give them time to make improvements, which I'm seeing happen in real time under her leadership.
I've also been working with Kelty, a personal trainer. Not only am I seeing great results and learning new techniques, but he's just a good guy--evidenced by every third person who walks by saying, "Hey Kelty!"
My expectation is that things will continue to improve.
~~~~~~~
So... Update to the review below from 10 months back.
I joined Fitness 19, who were almost immediately absorbed by Kennedy, which days later became Curl.
Up till now it had been ok: Mostly kind, attentive staff; good quality equipment; never a long wait to get on machines and cardio equipment; I even signed up with a trainer who's been terrific. Biggest complaint there was a few leches . . .
And then last week--with no warning to staff--three semis showed up *while* people were working out; removed all the newer, higher quality equipment; and replaced probably 75% of it with much older, lower quality equipment--and inefficiently (and in some cases dangerously) rearranged everything in the process.
What this says to me is that Curl Corporate saw the opportunity to swoop in on the high quality equipment of both Kennedy and Fitness 19, transfer it to a more favored gym/gyms, and left the backwoods Central Coast with their older crappy equipment.
I would've said I'm speechless, but clearly I'm not.
Keep in mind also that Curl absorbed Kennedy’s reviews, so the overall rating is a dishonest representation.
~~~
Called to inquire about membership pricing and a free day pass so I could check it out. The employee who answered—who was very nice—informed me that there are no free passes for prospective clients… But I *could* Pay either $20 or $25 for one visit, and if I decided to join they would credit it to my membership. I was so stunned I asked again if that was really the policy and the employee reiterated “no free passes.”
I saw somewhere in the reviews that Kennedy does offer free day passes. So either that’s not true, or employees aren’t being trained to understand policy. Either way this feels like a management issue.
Heading over to Fitness 19, where a free pass is available on their website and membership is literally half the price.

Curl Fitness has a great selection of weights, machines, classes and wellness options. I wasn't happy when we had to move from Fitness 19 but now, I wouldn't go back. Everyone on staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Other patrons are somewhat aware of gym etiquette but not always. I highly recommend Curl Fitness.

Since I posted my initial review regarding the Curl Fitness facility in Arroyo Grande I have observed positive changes. In the interest of fairness and accuracy, I’d like to add the following to my reviews.
Change is difficult, and it is reasonable to expect “growing pains” whenever two organizations with differing customers, traditions and cultures are brought together. Having said that, while the initial merger of Kennedy Club Fitness and Curl Fitness was not without difficulty, it is only fair to report that many of my initial concerns have been alleviated.
While I occasionally hear/see inappropriate language or clothing, this issue has been significantly mitigated. (As an aside, I teach at a local university and the foul language I hear walking across campus is far worse than anything I hear/see at Curl Fitness.)
The old equipment has been replaced by far superior and newer equipment. The facility is clean and well maintained. When equipment needs repair, it is completely quickly. As a swimmer, I appreciate the condition of the pool which is well treated and much cleaner than prior to the Curl Fitness acquisition. There appears to be a wider variety of classes available catering to a variety of fitness needs and preferences. Overall, the staff seem to enjoy working there and are in turn pleasant and helpful to members.
Again, merging organizations is a challenge and “growing pains” are to be expected. However, I can now recommend Curl Fitness with confidence.

I was transferred here when my gym closed down. Great facility and very nice staff. I did not do the personal training or the group classes so I can’t speak on those. But I will say the classes were full and upbeat so they are definitely doing something right. I also saw PTs with their clients, very engaging and focused on their clients.
They have all the machines for all the body parts. Locker rooms were older but clean and I think they are renovating soon.
Parking was decent, better than most places.
Cost more than say Planet Fitness but definitely worth it. So many more amenities by miles and the staff actually cares for their members.

Don’t bother. It’s very expensive. I was a Kennedy Club member but left 6 months after Curl took over. They leave damaged equipment in disrepair for months. When they got a replacement, it sat in a hallway for at least 2 months - you had to turn sideways to get by it. They removed several pieces of popular equipment and replaced with duplicates of other equipment and then recently jammed so much additional equipment there is now almost no space to stretch and warm out.

Just started coming back after remembering my Fitness 19 credentials. There have been amazing changes and everyone is so friendly and respectful. The trainers are knowledgeable and helpful, but not doting. The equipment is all functional and safe, and there's free coffee! Glad I kept my membership. I can't wait to get back in shape!

I Agree with others I think it would be good for signage about sitting on equipment texting between sets. It is most efficient not to do 3 sets on any machine and sit on that machine for the whole time better set up circuits. And move from 1 piece of equipment to another. Give others a chance to use the equipment.

I needed to cancel as I wasn’t able to go to the classes I wanted to. I went to cancel and signed a cancellation sheet and was told they would call me if they needed anything else. I never heard from them so I assumed everything was all good. Then I got billed again. I called and they said they would get it handled and I would be refunded. Then I got a call a few days later from a women who’s name I think was Janet who was so rude about me cancelling and implied that me signing the cancellation sheet never happened. She came across so aggressive and rude during that phone call. She eventually said she could freeze my account for $5 dollars a month. If she had been nice about it I would have walked away with no hard feelings but I was totally appalled by how staff talks to members there. Totally disappointed.

The super concentration level of chemicals in the pool water has been corrected, thank-you. The gym overall is still less clean than when it was Kennedy Club. The clientele has changed with many neglecting to wipe sweat off equipment and re-rack weights. Many sit on weight machines for 20 minutes or more on their phones, disregarding others who need to use the machines. Staff is not as attentive to cleanliness and maintenance as before since Curl took over. Plenty of room for improvement.

Website says there is ability to do a free trial pass but when you sign up they email and tell you it will cost you money. They should get their story straight and not lie on the website. I used to be a member of Kennedy. I just wanted to check out what has changed since, and was almost certain I'd sign up, but their shady ways and reading recent reviews made me rethink it. I'll be looking elsewhere.

This gym was laid back and exclusive until recently. New ownership and previous owners decided that it was a good idea to not let their patrons know about a takeover. The place became a circus overnight after they decided to absorb the riff-raff people from another local gym that closed. To top it off they decided to grandfather the $20 membership fees for all the former Fitness 19 people while former Kennedy was left paying $55+. Seems completely unethical and discriminatory! The people who work there are great but unfortunately bad and wrong decisions were made. Time to find another place.

Not a good number of weight lifting spots. A smith machine should not count toward your rack capacity- the two get taken over by people doing cellphone curls and patiently waiting patrons.
So many nearly new machines (because it’s obvious they don’t get used- some are just wild)- I’m mad this place took over Fitness 19. Two racks and a deadlift platform was way better than this place.

Thanks to the employee who not only wasted my time, but the time of everyone who showed up to the gym at 8am to workout. It was 820am when I took this pic, and I’m writing this review while no employee has still showed up to open the gym. Nothing irritates me more in this world than people who waste my time. If you can’t hire people to show up on time to work, then the owner or manager needs to take charge. I’ve already seen several people leave, this is ridiculous and a waste of everyone’s time. All 20 of us that are outside waiting! Unprofessional for a gym that’s supposed to be a premium gym in the area! *PS it was 830am when I left, and still no one had showed up*

I was an out of towner drop-in. I was just doing water aerobics and it was $20 which is pretty steep. It's a tiny pool outside. The class was good and the ladies were awesome. I have worked out in Gyms in Carmel, Monterey , Maui , Santa Barbara without a doubt, ARROYA GRANDE was the rudest experience I have ever encountered .
M. PAZELL the manager, needs to be replaced with someone who is not a shovenist to WOMEN. He has no Communication skills.
Tennis Instructor ? If you pay $10,000 You get a Swim Lane !!
THE Hot tub never worked, the the pool needs better MAINTENCE, the asphalt around pool , a mess. The women's showers no matting..

The franchise owner does not believe in powerlifting and bodybuilding in his 50+ year expertise. He does not listen to customers and talks about you behind your back. I was booted for deadlifting 6x6 @285lbs and slamming weights. It was not on purpose of the course and I tried to reason with the guy and educate him in the most recent findings with lifting heavy (I did navy medicine for eight years and well versed in 4 different subjects to include exercise science). He called me disrespectful and not once did I cuss at the guy until he started to over and over again. He threatened the cops on me and told me, my wife, and sister to leave. He didn't even listen to my wife when all she was trying to say was that have a TBI and he is really talking to me the wrong way. He didn't care if I was an oef vet or about my wife being a veteran. Seriously the gym is small and lacks some equipment. The front desk staff is nice and so is daycare. The gym is worth as much as a YMCA gym.

This place has gone down hill. They are behind on maintenance. Many of the dumbbells are so worn out you can't tell what weight they are, and the place just kind of has a gross feel to it. I was a member for a year, and the refrigeration unit for the water never worked on either of the upstairs drinking fountains. Also, they charge you for an extra month of membership when you cancel it. There has to be a better option.
