Custom Fit specializes in providing an individualized approach to fitness and health. We have a team of personal trainers, nutritionists, dietitians, and other wellness specialties. We train out of a by-appointment-only gym in San Francisco specifically designed for personal training, and we can measure, track, and analyze your biometrics using our DEXA scanner to accurately quantify results.

My wife and I have been training weekly with Brandon Tran at Custom Fit in Hayes Valley for nearly two years. We initially sought out his expertise following an accident that required reconstructive surgery on my knee. I had such a great experience with Brett Lando at Custom fit that after physical therapy, we decided to pursue couples personal training at Custom Fit.

Prior to starting with Brandon, we were complete neophytes at the gym -- neither of us had stepped foot in one since high school. Our main goals were to generally increase our fitness levels and build strength as we enter middle age.

Brandon has been a fantastic partner and has supported us immensely in this journey. He has created tailored routines that have helped me continue to pursue my goals, even after my surgery, and helped us both significantly increase our strength and overall fitness. Neither my wife nor I ever thought we would be interested in going to the gym or hiring personal trainers, but we are extremely happy with Brandon and would recommend him to anybody.

We also appreciate the atmosphere at Custom Fit. The gym serves a large variety of clients, from serious powerlifters to older individuals who are maintaining their fitness and everybody in between, making it a comfortable and welcoming environment for all fitness levels.

I've been training at Custom Fit for yeaaaaars, almost since the business opened. These days I work out at the Octavia location which I LOVE. While I have appreciated my time with each trainer I've worked with (3 total at Custom Fit), Brandon Tran has been my trainer for the past couple years and is truly GOAT.

His workout game plan is 10/10 levels of strategic, but if you aren't paying attention, you might not even realize just how targeted, strategic, and maximized they are – because he himself is such a calming but motivating presence during sessions. For me, he skips the routines I can do at home or on video, and focuses on efficient full-body-engaging work that just HAPPEN over time to improve your strength, mobility, posture, and confidence.

Every other trainer I've worked with since 2012 has heard me say "I don't like doing XYZ thing because it ends up in my traps and then my traps feel too big." Brandon heard it, didn't challenge my statement, but then subtlely worked on my back strength and upper body strength, and now my body's strength is balanced so that I don't rely so much on my traps when they shouldn't be engaged.

Brandon designs routines that keep things interesting, but he also will focus on certain lifting skills that give you so much confidence and an objective progress measure (example: I can deadlift heavyyyy now). Cannot recommend him and Custom Fit enough. As a person who struggles to set aside time during the week for my personal wellness, I genuinely love to train, and it has made my daily + weekly life in SF so much better.

I played competitive baseball most of my life and I can say without a doubt that Brandon Tran is the best trainer I’ve worked with. Each workout session is completely different

The workout environment also exponentially increases my satisfaction. It’s clean. The equipment is top notch. I love all the natural lighting and plants. Sauna and cold plunge are *chef’s kiss. Run club Saturday’s are a great way to start the weekend. Ps- I walk with my dog, Baggins and meet the group at the top 😁 Sooo, all levels are welcome! Other trainers also know their stuff (attended several solid classes!) and Evan the owner was very attentive in our email communication prior to me signing up.

Lastly, can’t forget Alysha! She’s my Dietitian through CF. Sooo knowledgeable! Sooo kind! And consistently makes me feel better even after I feel like giving up on the nutrition 😂 It’s the hardest part for me! Alysha picks me up, we recalibrate, and she lovingly gets me moving forward.

Aaanyway, needless to say, I highly recommend Custom Fit. It continues to be a pleasure working towards my fitness goals with them 🫶🏾

I came to Custom Fit as something of a last resort. In the past, I managed my own sports and fitness pursuits and felt I was doing just fine. However, life comes at you hard sometimes, and for the first time, I reached out to professionals for help. I've been working with James Cho and he has been 100% instrumental in me making progress with my health and fitness.

More than a personal trainer, James Cho is a personal person. He has a varied and deep fitness background, but keeps my program simple and effective. Is his program something I would choose do do on my own? Probably not, and that fact makes me even more confident that it was the right call to ask for his help. We tackle what my health needs, not just what I "like" doing. And while it might not be all fun and games, I am getting real results.

James has also been very accommodating to my challenging calendar needs. I have an inconsistent schedule plus health/life issues that add extra challenges to locking in a more normal gym routine. However, James truly partners with me in working things out as they come up, and despite my variability, we continue to make consistent progress along some very specific metrics.

While I have always led a relatively active lifestyle, I have been plagued with back/ankle/knee injuries for nearly all of my life. After a serious back injury in my early 20s, I learned I was hypermobile, which explained, at least in-part, why I was so easily injured all the time. Fast forward to my 30s, and I've finally started taking my health more seriously. As a hypermobile individual, strength training is SO important, but I wanted to make sure I was doing it safely since I'm so injury prone.

Custom Fit is near my home, and after doing some research it seemed like a good fit. I started working with James Cho ~ two months ago, and it's been a game changer. James took the time to understand my goals, concerns, and lifestyle, and worked with me to come up with a personalized training plan. I've been a casual gym-goer in the past, but now I have more structure and have expanded my abilities substantially. Better yet, every other aspect of my life has improved - I have more energy, fewer aches and pains, and am able to take part in all of the other non-gym activities that I love, mostly pain-free (skiing, running, cycling, backpacking, etc). My knees in particular had been giving me issues from the last few ski seasons, but they feel better than they have in years!

The sessions with James are super fun, and pack a punch. I used to be self-conscious in the gym about using lower weights, but he hypes me up no matter what, and is always in-tune with my form. It's helped me take myself less seriously in a fitness setting, which is an added bonus! I find it really easy to schedule sessions with him - he's always super flexible and works around my schedule. And he's always available via text for questions.

I would highly recommend training with James Cho at Custom Fit!

I joined custom fit through their introductory deal but I'll be staying because of the exemplary personal training I've received there. I've worked with a few trainers elsewhere before and Lizzy is by far the best and most knowledgeable. I had an injury going in and was having trouble doing basic movements, but Lizzy helped me correct my form and gain significant strength back in a way I'm positive I wouldn't have been able to do without her help. She paid close attention to every movement in order to understand what was happening and gave me extremely targeted cues that made all of the difference (and that were not intuitive to me at all -- I'm seriously *so* impressed with how knowledgeable and capable she is). Even beyond the injury, she's helped me improve my form considerably. There are movements that previously caused me pain that now don't, and others that I only realized I was doing ineffectively when, after doing it correctly, I could feel the "right" muscle group working for the first time. I really would recommend her to anyone!

The custom fit facilities are also great -- super clean, they have everything you need, and it's never too crowded.

Custom Fit's new location in Hayes Valley is more than just a place to train.

I've enjoyed the cold plunge and infrared sauna to help with my recovery. The cold plunge is about 50 degrees! It feels good.. when you get out!

They also offer VO2 Max testing which is a unique offering that I've been tested with. The test gave me insight into when I'm maximizing burning more fat versus carbs, what my cardio zones truly are, and what my VO2 Max is now. Definitely going to retest to see if my program is cutting it.

I'd recommend Custom Fit for personal training, treatments, and to take your fitness to the next level.

I have been training at Custom Fit for the past 2 years and can say that my experience there has been consistently great.

The space itself is bright, clean, and well equipped. The vibe is friendly and as a female who hasn’t always felt the most comfortable in some gym environments, I feel very comfortable there.

So far in my time training there, I’ve successfully lost over 50 pounds and gained a ton of strength and confidence. This is primarily due to the support and guidance of my trainer Brandon Tran. I have some injuries that have held me back in the past and Brandon has taken his time with me to gradually improve my mobility and endurance, while still pushing me to reach my potential. There are many exercise goals that I have now achieved that I was never able to achieve before (even having worked with other trainers in the past) and I so appreciate the trust, support, and guidance Brandon has given to me in our time training together. He also has a great energy about him and I enjoy the way he structures our sessions.

I've been going to CustomFit since October and my trainer has been Brandon. He has been incredible in setting up and reaching my goals and to surpassing them. He is friendly and knowledgeable and has made me more comfortable in developing my workout form and, which was my biggest concern going to the gym. He's great at communication and meeting for our sessions that work with his schedule and mine. In 5 months, I have already improved further, that I expected, for one example moving from 25 lb to 55 lb for flat dumbbell chest press.

Lu has been my personal trainer for years. I’m not a simple project: 73 years old, a cancer survivor, and more than 10 years of dealing with Parkinson’s Disease. Lu helped me get back to running after brutal anti-cancer treatments left me in a wheelchair. He asks the right questions and coaches me toward a balanced workout schedule. He’s really good. Custom Fit feels like a great gym with a friendly environment.

You should try Custom Fit! I've been going for about a year, and I cannot recommend it enough. From the beginning, Custom Fit tried to tailor my workouts to meet my goals. My trainer, Lucia, listened closely, asked questions, and then helped me build a program that fir my goals. She focused first on fundamental strength, then built up to more challenging things over time. This was key for me, as I had a bad back. I always felt like Lucia was thoughtful of that, even when she was pushing me to harder things. Every workout is different, and I can tell every trainer there cares about the little things, like safe technique. The environment feels safe and judgement free, and I think anyone from any walk of life could feel safe trying to achieve their fitness goals here. I feel stronger and healthier than I have in years, and I owe a lot of that feeling to Lucia, and Custom Fit!

Great location with larger gym that other location. They still offer nutrition, DEXA scans, and other health services. Gym is much more expansive with more ground floor, and not on a busy street.

I've received nutritionist services from Tarah and she's helped me reach my goals + help me understand my body more in just 5 months. The app they use has been very helpful for me to track and be better informed on the food I put in my body. And the DEXA scans have been super helpful to track success for the short and longterm.

Brandon has been more than I could have asked for from a trainer. His diligence with my workout program and patience with all of my personal requests and questions has been incredible. He’s improved my fitness in remarkable ways, my results have been more than what I expected. Custom Fit has been an amazing gym. It’s always very clean and the way it is set up and kept, you can tell they care that we have a great experience and that we have everything we need. Huge thank you to Custom Fit and to Brandon! Where do personal trainers go to train? The answer is simple they go to customfit. As a personal trainer and kinesiologist I recognize and understand the importance of great personal training and equipment.

That’s why to keep myself accountable and on track I’ve gone to Lucia at customfit for my own training. The training has been great, I was able to get a DEXA scan and a nutrition consultation with Tarah who is a registered dietician.

The gym has a really awesome floor plan that allows for lots of space for functional and therapeutic exercises. They also have really nice showers with amazing smelling soap and shampoo (towels are complimentary).

So if you want to train at a state of the art facility where trainers go to train then I highly recommend customfit.

These group classes are great! Times are convenient and the gym is clean with all different types of equipment (and it’s just decorated so cute with natural lighting!). Instructor sanitizes everything right in front of you. Group is small enough to still get the instructor’s personalized attention (we were 3 people at the time), and have plenty of moving room in the gym between the workouts. I like the intimate feel and small team atmosphere of pushing each other. Instructor Lucia is great! She really makes the classes fun with a solid music playlist, very high energy with a bright and funny personality. And she thoroughly explains each work out with options for modifications so you don’t hurt yourself. Will definitely do more classes!

So happy I found group X! I was in a slump needing a push and after showing up to my first group class.. I felt so good! It was a total of 4 people, great music and a great workout. Since it is a small group you get the 1:1 feel of a personal training class, but you have a community to finish the workout with. I loved it. If you are in the city definitely check them out!! Ask for Lucia, she’s the BEST :)

I've been seeing Lucia as a personal trainer since January 2020. I consider myself an active person but really wanted to focus on toning and getting stronger. In the few months we had 1:1 sessions at Custom Fit (pre-pandemic), I saw a big difference in my physique, endurance, and stamina. I was doing DEXA scans to track my progress and definitely saw the difference! The pandemic didn't stop Lucia from holding me accountable towards my goals -- we quickly pivoted to Zoom workouts and then meeting outdoors. I'm always in awe of her passion and fitness knowledge. Not to mention, her playfulness and humor that keeps me laughing throughout our session (that's an ab workout right?).

Halfway through 2020, Lucia connected me with two (badass) women and we started outdoor group sessions. It was such a game changer! The workouts are thoughtfully curated, fun, and challenging. Being part of a group really helped push me to try harder and seeing them is the highlight of my week. Most importantly, I'm stronger and feel amazing!

I'll be forever grateful to Lucia for getting me through 2020 (and 2021!) both mentally and physically. I would give all the yelp stars to her for everything she's done for my confidence and sanity. Definitely give her a try (solo or group). You will not regret it.

I've been seeing a personal trainer for 3 years and wanted to ramp up my training at least once a week in a group setting to push myself. I came across Group X walking by the studio and they were launching their pilot program in the month of August and figured I had nothing to lose by trying them out. I'm so glad I did.

Trainers: experts at what they do.
Studio: impeccably clean and spacious.
Energy: high!
Music: upbeat and fun.
Workout: always different and the right amount of challenging.

If you're looking for a great workout and overall experience, look no further than Group X! Lucia is an excellent instructor and takes great care in making classes fun and impactful. I loved group fitness classes pre-pandemic and Group X allows me to get that same experience but in a safer environment. Limited capacity also means more focus/guidance from instructors as well which is beyond amazing! It's super easy to book classes and check-in at the studio is a breeze. Highly recommend Group X!

I've worked with Group X and some of their trainers, not as a client, but as a videographer/photographer for their website and social feeds. Not only is their facility bright and spacious, Group X has also shown a dedication to cleanliness and adherence to COVID safety protocols which I’ve witnessed firsthand. This review isn’t about Group X, per se, but rather Lucia Ramirez, who is the brains – and the brawn – behind the business. In August of 2020, a few months into coronavirus lockdown, my wife and I realized that one of the many unfortunate consequences of quarantine was a falling off in our fitness. We hadn’t gained the “COVID 15”, but we were physically and mentally blah, and realized there was no place to go but down. So, with the gyms closed, we set out to find a trainer who could help us while observing the necessary health & safety protocols. It was our exceptional good fortune to be introduced to Lucia.

Lucia worked with us as a couple through every stage of COVID restrictions: first, outdoors in a park, over Zoom when wildfire smoke kept everyone inside, then in a gym with masks, and then, finally, with masks off. Not only are her fitness knowledge and experience second-to-none, she powered us through our sessions with her boundless energy, enthusiasm, and humor (all fueled by her passion for java).

My wife and I are in our early 50’s, active but not Active. Not triathletes, but not couch potatoes, either. Lucia tailored her exercise program to us, and in spite of the stink eye we occasionally shot her during taxing reps, we looked forward to every workout.

Scheduling logistics caused us and Lucia to amicably part company. The year we spent under her watchful care was worth every moment, and every penny. We’re stronger, fitter, and feel great. “Look at your abs, honey! Nice butt, sweetheart!” Five star review for Lucia. If you have the opportunity to train with her, by all means, say “Si!”
