I had the worst experience with the front desk person named Brian. He gave so much attitude and didn’t make the Dan Mckinney gym feel welcoming at all.

During my time as a member there were lots of technical issues ranging from the sauna being broken to the hot water in the showers being down. In addition, I found their app interface to be confusing and unhelpful. When I went to submit a request to cancel my membership via the app I didn't realize nothing happened with that information and the membership never was cancelled. Nor was I sent confirmation that this request was received or acknowledged. To my own fault it took me 2 months to realize I was still being charged. When I requested a refund from Brian I was met with a brick wall of unprofessionalism where he responded to my refund request by charging me for an additional month. Their IT issues and unclear processes became my responsibility to defend and then they just stopped responding. If you don't need adequate customer service then this facility should suit you fine. If you need to cancel your membership, take screenshots. You'll need them in order to get in touch with anyone helpful. So incredibly disappointing.

It is such a shame that such a fantastic facility always has something not working. Spa has been down for weeks. Lap pool has been down off and on and rec pool also. Last month was the sauna. Spare parts might be helpful.

It's a very nice facility to join as far as indoor gyms go.

It has a very nice outdoor pool and jacuzzi area which is very much busy with a huge amount of swimming lanes and swimming lessons and children's activities and all kinds of things like that.
One of the nicest things is that it is a new and beautiful facility with a small workout area in general upstairs but it's a very nice workout area and if you are on any type of assistance ... social security or you have food stamps you can apply for a discounted (with a possibility of a complete Grant to cover the entire cost of a membership) membership that is good at all the YMCA's which all are very nice lately .. many of them have been remodeled and they take a lot of time and care to keep these new facilities clean and also they provide many nice amenities.

Residents of the County of San Diego are entitled to claim 2 passes a year and so you can try one two times or try two different ones they don't have to be back to back ... you can do one in the spring and one in the fall ... they are very easy going about it and it is a nice way to spend the day especially if you're trying to decide to join a gym!

They have nice locker rooms excellent showers excellent bathrooms, and an area to do your hair and get ready for the day if you go before work and a lovely way to wind down after work!

The only thing that I thought could be improved was today is not easy to navigate at this particular YMCA your way through reserving a basketball court or finding a class it's a little bit chaotic the way the workout area is upstairs and it's not very large, but I'm sure that the staff would be able to help with any of those questions.

UPDATE
This is a wonderful facility with some really caring quality people working there that's for sure. Sometimes there is too much talking in the sauna. Some of the people are very kind and friendly.

PRIOR REVIEW

This YMCA is one of the greatest Ys in the world. It's a massive flagship complex that serves so many people, each day. There's something for everyone and it's huge. Great classes, Zumba, body combat, yoga, all sorts of stuff. From lifting weights to treadmill and machines and weights. The staff is always friendly and observant. The building is beautiful. The two large pools are great there's a giant jacuzzi and a steam room and a sauna. The crowd is friendly and respectful. It's a very beloved destination for families and the kid amenities are great including the outdoor patio for families to enjoy with ping pong and the little kids water park back in the pool section. I love this Y and it's in a great location and it's just a very quality positive atmosphere.

The aquatic facility is badly run. The spa is either always broken or closed. The pool is either off temperature or off chemicals. It’s so inconsistent that I just canceled my membership. But even more annoying, I have emailed a supervisor at the La Jolla facility, and the vice president of membership. And haven’t heard a peep in response. So beware before you plunk down your monthly sports fee here.

Not perfect but definitely better than the other options out there.

BAD: lots of SINGLE MEN in FAMILY locker room (should not be allowed!!), kids club not supervised properly (babies paid lots of attention to, toddlers can get hurt and the staff didn't see what happened), towel service removed, people sweating up the equipment and dropping weights with no acknowledgement from the staff & trainers.

GOOD: group classes, gorgeous view, instructor Cappie, pools.

I really liked this place until I came alone to the pool with my two kids. Absolutely absurd rule they have implemented that one kid has to wear a life jacket when with 1 parent. I’ve been to Coply price in city heights , Jackie Robinson in mt hope area and the one in mission valley and they have never had such a rule. How am I supposed to be teaching my kids to swim well with a life jacket on? I’m never more than 2 feet from them. This rule really upsets me and I won’t be returning to this facility. Shame on you guys!!!

It was my first day coming here wanting more info about memberships and trials, from the start no one at the front desk looked eager or wanted to help or welcome me, a elderly lady told me the membership prices with an attitude. It seemed like I was wasting her time by wanting to sign up and know more about the memberships, not welcoming or professional at all. Very dissatisfied with the customer service and this experience.

I've been a loyal member of this establishment for years and have always enjoyed excellent service. However, recently, there's been a noticeable decline in the quality of service. The most recent experiences have been nothing short of disappointing. The more mature staff members, who were once pleasant to deal with, seem to have lost their charm and professionalism. It's disheartening to encounter such lack of respect and organization. It feels like one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. I truly hope that the management takes action to improve the demeanor and organization of their staff. It's crucial for this place to regain its reputation as a pleasant and welcoming destination for its patrons.

What a great find for a pair of tourists looking for β€œit all” in a rec centre - pool, weights, jacuzzi, sled work out, cardio, lounge time AND a cafe! a friendly welcome with a tour of the whole facility! Should we move here? Just for the Y?!!! Seems like a great community of people with lots of energy, friendship and heart for each other. This community should be very proud of this incredible community rec centre. You’ve created a real gem. Thank you to Geraldine for the warm welcome and Jose for the tour. We had a wonderful time enjoying your incredible facility and community. The only thing we wished for was a public transit stop closer to you. We highly recommend this experience for any other who are visiting San Diego or La Jolla!

Before COVID, childcare came with membership, membership was less expensive, the pool and other aquatics were reliable and the indoor basketball courts existed. After paying for months through COVID for NO services and after they opened again, childcare is now charged, cost of membership has gone up twice, the pool and aquatics are closed randomly throughout the day at least once, if not more, a day for chemicals or pumps and the basketball courts have been unusable for over a year.
My salary has not gone up, their services have gone WAY down and yet everything is more expensive. Used to be my favorite place, now it’s just like any other mediocre business that charges more for less.

Facility and equipment is pretty good here…staff is nice but too many issues. This Y has the worst internet I’ve ever tried to use…it’s a mouse on a wheel. The gym has been under remodeling for over a year, and to my knowledge dues were not adjusted. The new website crashes and freezes just trying to book a single class, summer session wasn’t even possible to use. No one ever answers the phone either.

We pay $150 per month and it’s extremely unreliable. Half the time I come here I can’t even get my child into the Childwatch- a service I pay extra for and they just have it closed without any notification and most of the time they’re at capacity on days they should be overstaffed. Weekends Childwatch should be open for extended hours. Sick of wasting my time trying to come to this facility.

The YMCA has long been a beloved place. I can get my workouts in while my kids are having a great time safely playing, and get a lot of work done in the cafe. I rely a lot on the child care as a mom of 4 who’s also an entrepreneur and entertainer, as those couple hours of child care really add up to a LOT of quality work time for me. Otherwise, I work from home, where I’m also a SAHM. I love the steam room and sauna at this location, especially when I have a show/performance to prepare for. What I am very disappointed in is the strict rule (that I recently became aware of) regarding the studio rooms. I drive quite a bit extra to come to this location to use the studio room to practice alone between their scheduled classes, and I’ve appreciated this since my 2010 Y membership. Now, no one is allowed to use the studios during off-hours. This is a huge part of my life right now, being able to count on this location and space to practice. I’m disappointed and feel let down by the Y.

Pros: kind helpful staff! Clean, GREAT outdoor splash pad!!
Cons: it is absolutely horrible for wheelchair/stroller accessibility. Also, there is only one diaper changing location in the entire place aside from within the child watch area, and where it’s located is super inconvenient for those that have strollers (esp doubles) that they need to take with them because it means jamming it through three different doors just to get to the diaper changing station. I have a double stroller that I have to keep my twins in because I also have a three-year-old so I can’t just let them roam free they need to be strapped into the stroller. It makes it literally almost impossible to get to the diaper changing station that is in the family area. Every other YMCA in the area has accessible doors that have the option to be opened automatically which should be a mainstay. PLEASEEEEEE get accessible doors here!! Aside from that, great location!
Also, not a huge deal but I wish they had an indoor pool. I have had skin cancer and I love taking the water classes so I wish they had an indoor pool.

I was a visiting out-of-towner who took advantage of the YMCA's policy of honoring membership from other states.

This Y was particularly impressive. The building looks new and clean. There are plenty of parking spaces. Front desk people were friendly. They swiftly checked us in without hassle after verification (done on a nationwide database that immediately retrieved my info & photo).

The treadmills are high-tech and advanced. This was the first time I used a rubberized tread system. Not only was the material easy on the feet, it was also very quiet. Now that I've tested the gourmet stuff, how could I ever going to return to the standard, board-pounding equipment at my local Y?

Didn't use the pool but I could see the 3 swimming areas from the glass windows of the 2nd floor where the cardio and weight areas were located. There is standard swimming pool, a child's area and s water/play section.

The weight area is large, well-spaced with modern equipment. A mirrored partition separates it from the free weights area. Again, the free weights are clean and nearly organized. There was always a trainer around.

Locker room was clean and bright. It was also well ventilated.

While I was there, I saw a lot of kids. Apparently it also offers childcare and activities.

Even though I only frequented it twice, I thought it was a nice place that deserves 4 stars.

Most importantly, the view from the 2nd floor is fantastic.

Great facility, location, and it's all mostly new. I had a membership for a year and did not renew. The problem is this place smells like an armpit. I was in the Army in the South in the summer earlier in life. Nothing could have prepared me for the perpetual odor that haunts this YMCA. You need some windows that open to the outside air. A few large fans swooshing around the BO is not going to do anything. Not only didn't I renew my 1 year membership, but towards the end I only went a few times a month and only to use the sauna because the heat must have kept it smelling neutral.

I really want to like this place and have given it many tries. It comes down to the pool staff/leadership and their lack of understanding or even simple compassion for parents. I understand rules and the need for them. Safety is first. I was a lifeguard for years myself. Maybe that’s why this upsets me so much. I’ve witnessed the guards yelling at children for just touching the handrailing on the stairs. The guards go out of their way to enforce rules that don’t make children safer but instead prevent families from teaching their children to swim and enjoy the water. The pool environment is not friendly. I am very close to the point of canceling our membership and going elsewhere. Water safety is very important. That’s why I take my children to the pool in the first place, so they can learn to swim. This environment is preventing that.

This Y has been remodeled so much over the years, I hardly recognize it! Having the workout gym on the 2nd floor when you first walk in makes the lobby smell musty but can't complain at a YMCA. Super nice upgrades with nice party rooms, warm but nice locker rooms, and an awesome gymnastics program! The kids and staff become family over the years and it feels like more than just a gym.

This is hands down the best YMCA I have ever visited. The place is clean as can be, the facilities are super well kept, the pool is always warm (which makes it bearable to swim even if its 62 degrees), the staff is always polite and helpful, they have a pretty awesome splash pads that my kids seem to enjoy every time. It feels more like an upscale club than a Y.

The YMCA of La Jolla has been a mainstay in my life and my children's for the last 10+ years. Great staff and lots to do.

I came here for swimming. The pools are excellent. I typically go to other YMCA locations (Mission Valley etc), and one thing I noticed/disliked about this La Jolla location is that the lockers did not come with the built-in lock like the other locations.

YMCA, welcoming and (with very few exceptions) not judgemental of normal people trying to get in shape. It's never empty, but also rarely full. A little annoying that their sauna had been out of commission for so long.

Good amount of things to do here. Really nice in that it's next to a park, and the park has a view of the beach if you go walk around the baseball fields a bit. Overall decent location, so if it's near home, I definitely suggest going for it.

Great gym with great ocean views. It has a couple of heated pools. Great for kids. It can get a little busy during rush hour. The kids daycare area is big and fun. There is open gym for gymnastics everyday.
