No Good course Always very wet if you get an early tee time. They're always late to open and you will never get range time for $90.It's not worth it never go back again.

Place is a total joke. From the staff being incredibly rude and dismissive to 9 holes taking near 4 hours and being promised a refund after making the choice to call it. Couldn't pay me to to go back to that place when I could literally be blindfolded and throw a dart on the map and go to anywhere it lands and have a 1000000x better experience. Boo darkhorse boo

The course is in VERY terrible condition! They don’t even put sand in the carts to fix divots! Divots cover the fairways. Tee boxes are not maintained at all, they all have many divots! Bunkers have very little sand. The parking brake on the cart only worked about a quarter of the time. The bridge on no. 12 is falling apart. In my opinion, they have way too low of a maintenance budget. I will never play here again!

The course was fantastic. Greens were quick, smooth and have plenty of interest. By far the best conditioned course in the GV area. Robert at the shop was very helpful and informative. We will be back! Just make sure to call ahead regarding aeration!

Decent course design, decent course conditions, and good drink service to begin with.
This is my 2nd round here in the last 4 weeks. I have 4 issues. Number one, the cart GPS (control) doesn't match up with the course markers, so minus one star for poorly marked "no cart" areas. Number two, no ball washers at all (come on lol), minus another star. A half star reduction for the carts being restricted from outside of 50 yards to the green on lots of holes. Lastly the "club pro" talked about the lack of a clubhouse for 5 solid minutes, when I was just trying to check in, so minus another half star. Leaving us with an honest 2 stars.

My wife and I play a lot of courses, and we both agree that this was the best "value for the money" course we have played this year. This is a wonderful course that is in great shape, and the price point is very reasonable. We played here two days in a row and loved it. Highly recommended.

Terrible customer service and tee time system.
1. I was charges for all 8 tee times day before arrival. This was not communicated when I booked the tee time.
2. Had child day prior to the golf date. I couldn't make the tee time. Obviously, I couldn't make it or had enough time to set up another person to show up.
3. Day of tee times all 7 friends paid AGAIN for the tee time that was already paid for. The golf course general manager didn't bother to check that this was already paid for. According to their GM their system can't track pre-paid tee times.
4. When friends were paying, employee complained about charging 7 different tee times. Demanding to keep it to the least number of cards. Complaining that their system is too difficult to use.
5. After I noticed they charged my credit card 3 weeks later I called and asked to get refunded. The general manager and owner said their system can't track the people that paid so I had to hunt down receipts to show they paid (TOTAL BS). On that call I also mentioned that it was only 7 people due to my child's birth. They said they couldn't reimburse me for that. Frustrated but I let it go.
6. After receipts were collected. I asked for my reimbursement of the 7 tee times and asked again if I could get reimburse for my tee time. The general manager immediately said no to reimbursing me for my tee time. He mentioned, "We won't refund for any "excuse". Even death, we wouldn't refund under policy". Couldn't believe what I heard I accepted it and asked for reimbursement for the 7 tee times. He said he would have it done that Friday.
7. 5 days go by nothing was refunded. I tried calling and leaving voicemails. No one responded. After 2 weeks I had to get my CC company involved to dispute the charges. Out $720 dollars for over 2 months now because to this terrible course.

Horrible father's day golf out outing., especially for my nephews first time with us. The management there has changed and it is a.complete disaster. Sending groups out every 10 min with no Marshall. REALLY? Forget about range balls you can put to warm up. All about the money. Course was in decent shape, but I won't be coming back, plenty of great courses in the sierras

To start with I paid for a bucket of balls but there were no balls, I was not able to get my money back for them also at the turn when we tried to get food they had run out of propain, on a Saturday at 2:30 so they were not able to cook anything but they had plenty of Alcohol It is sad because this is a great coars but poorly managed. We will not be back soon

Dark Horse is a beautifully designed course however the service we received today was disappointing. Front desk guy was annoyed that we were smart enough to book a twilight rate, they sold us a bucket of balls for the range but there were no balls available, we had to wait until 5 minutes before our tee time to get our carts, and then by the turn they ran out of propane so they had no food available. When we finished the round the pro shop was closed no one in sight so we couldn’t even get a refund for the bogey on their range balls. I will say their bartender was very friendly as was their cart lady. But considering it was Father’s day weekend it was really poorly managed for a higher end course. Hopefully they get their act together we will not be back soon.

3 stars is generous.
Range balls are some of the most expensive in the area. And good luck actually finding a medium sized basket. They're all small.
No chipping around the practice green. To heck with proper warm up.
The worst however is lack of water availability. I was even told yesterday by the cart girl they don't carry it on the cart.
I only found one cooler by a bathroom on 7 and it was almost empty.
Seriously?
Lastly I don't like the fact that the Cube payment system they use stores my credit card information. I never agreed to it yet I get an email notification saying it's been stored.

I really enjoy the course itself, but the management could improve their customer service—especially over the phone. When you call to book a tee time, you’re often told they don’t have time to help because there’s a line of customers, and you’re directed to book online instead. The online booking system is frustrating—you can’t simply reserve a time and pay in person. Instead, you’re required to pay through a third-party platform and must enter your credit card details every time.
Additionally, when you arrive, you’re required to pay separately for the round and for water, which adds to the confusion. The phone number listed on the website doesn’t connect you directly with the course but instead with a third-party service, and when you do get someone on the line, communication is often difficult, and they still ask for your credit card info. Overall, the course is great, but the booking process really needs improvement.

Great value for a phenomenal course. Fees were well under $100 which for a course like this in California is extremely rare. Great shape tee to green. No frills, don’t expect a gourmet restaurant or bar, but both food and drink are available. If you’re in the area this is a must play.

Called the pro shop to ask what the age was on carts wanting to play with or without a cart. The man I spoke to was extremely rude and told me after I asked the age I needed to be to drive the carts he said 18 years which I am 16 and just hung up on me before I could make a tee time never have I had someone give me such attitude while trying to book a tee time.

Love the course.
Darkhorse has it all; challenging, stunning views,
elevation changes, awesome greens and of course a nice assortment of cocktail options.
I was told that they just received their liquor license on April 1st and that a nice bar with a seating and fireplace area are in the works.
If you have not been up to the course, I highly recommend that you set up a tee time and enjoy what Darkhorse has to offer.
Darkhorse is now my favorite course bar none.

Read the Yelp Reviews is all I can say. First clue should have been that I had to literally speak to someone in South Africa in order to get an update on their Aerification schedule, b/c their ProShop direct line is disconnected. I was on hold for close to 15 minutes, afterwhich the agent from South Africa said he also couldn't get through to the ProShop. Mind you, this was on a Friday at 10:30am. Nonetheless, the course's ownership is repeatedly mentioned to the be the issue. I can attest to this. I have played with numerous individuals throughout the Sierras and have heard the same thing over and over. That is, they used to be members, but since the new owners from Newport Beach took over, there has been a steady decline in both customer service and well as course conditions. Go figure, Southern California owners being all about the money. Give this track a miss. The quality of course does not make up for the poor conditions and dreadful customer service.

EDIT: 3/1/25
Got back out to Darkhorse for the first time in a while today, and was really looking forward to it because I had such a good time on multiple past visits, but today’s experience fell well short of expectations. Friends I took with me today have zero interest in going back which is a bummer.
The good: Course is in great shape right now. Playing significantly harder than in the past- the greens are very, very firm right now and the fairways are rolling a lot more than on past visits. From tee to green the course is as good as I’ve ever seen it.
The bad: Pretty much everything else. We all paid for some balls while we checked in and when we got down to the range there were no balls in the dispenser so we weren’t able to warm up at all besides rolling some putts. Not having any balls for the range on a Saturday morning is seriously bad. It also seemed like there was an insane amount of mowing and other work going on around the course- it almost felt like we were on a hidden camera show with how often we pulled up to a tee box and had someone mowing the hole in front of us, or working nearby making a ton of noise. Again, peak hours when we’re paying peak green fees just doesn’t feel like the best time for this.
The water stations and stuff around the course are no more, or weren’t today. Maybe that’s more of a summer thing. They still don’t have ball washers or trash cans out on the course. The food and beverage options have become even more limited than they already were.
Overall, the experience is just lacking. Sucks because it is a great course but sometimes that isn’t enough. Cart girl was nice and the guy up front was chill but nobody there really seemed to give a shit. Had talked the course up a lot but it’s hard to argue for it over The Ridge or other courses in the area that are also challenging & in good shape when all of these little things are considered. I appreciate that golf is the focus here but still, a little extra work would go a long way
Original review (from 2023, including all photos)
Played through here on Saturday for the first time and we had a great round.
Course is kept in excellent shape and the focus is definitely on the golf. Nice cut on the fairways but the rough is thick & the bunkers are tough so you want to keep it in the short stuff as much as possible. Fun greens with a lot of movement and they’re quick. Plenty of water bottles and ice in tubs throughout the course, only thing that surprised me is I didn’t see a single ball washer all day.
Nice range with the TopTracer setup, good mats in there that feel closer to turf than most. Not a ton of stalls but didn’t pose a problem for us that morning. Pretty spacious putting green with some movement on it to prepare you for what is coming. Carts are pretty tricked out and worked great for us all day.
Didn’t interact with much of the staff so I can’t speak to any issues with the management but the girl who checked us in and the guy selling dogs at the turn were both very nice.
Great day of golf, already looking forward to heading back next month for an event.

Came back to this course after not playing it for 4+ years. I used to love this course but it's in terrible shape! Go check out the recent Yelp reviews. The tee boxes are lumpy and the fairways are mostly burned up. The greens look great from far but are covered with ball marks that look like they're weeks old. The bunker sand is nice but half of them are muddy from too much water. They've gotten rid of the trailer clubhouse and have built a putt putt style check in booth. I paid $80 to play on Sunday morning and felt completely ripped off. The conditions make this course more in the $40 range. Any photos or videos you see of the course being green and highly rated are from a time long gone. Here is looking back up the 17th fairway.

Got the chance to play this course recently. And it did not disappoint! The course is in Great shape and improvements are being made to it daily. Enhancements that have been done to make this course as beautiful and challenging as it is, go unnoticed to the average golfer. Yet give it the look and feel one would want from a round of golf. The greens are immaculate and fast and make it all that much more challenging. There are plenty of tee boxes placed in positions for any type of golfer to enjoy this course. Cannot wait to come back and play it again!

I am giving Darkhorse one star due to a few factors. I had booked a foursome and the morning of I had 2 guys drop out due to injury, the dad was hurt and son didn't want to play without him. The course is in such bad condition due to swamp condition of fairways and punch greens the are giving a free replay. Due to my guys not being able to join I was not given the replay. Do not recommend due to horrible customer service, no food or grill. This used to be a decent course but go to the Ridge if you want a good round.

Darkhorse is such a beautiful course, that gets prettier as you play. The layout of the course is overlooking Lake of the Pines, and surrounded by pine trees. This is not a good course. The fairways are eaten up and horrible, the greens are not that bad. But the golf carts are ultimately ridiculous. I love this place, but I want to be transparent. This course just isn't what it used to be (currently), there are tons of dead patches and lack of playable areas on the fairways, variable conditions of super wet or really dry throughout different areas of certain holes. It was hard to get a true feel for the course today, greens were in above average conditions and the wildlife scenery was beautiful throughout the day. I will be back to see how dark horse bounces back course management wise from the rut it is currently in.

This ownership group is trash. Their email campaigns shout one thing but hidden in the small print is a bunch of really lame rules that prohibit the use of their deal that’s being offered. I’ve seen so many irritated customers at their desk who were tricked by their shady marketing and over zealous rule adherence.
I’ve been playing this course for well over 10 years and have seen it go through all the transitions. Yes, the course is a nice course. It plays well most of the time. But! I’ll never go back after the way they insisted on searching everyone’s cooler bags on a 100 degree day. They have one cart girl, no club house and no amenities yet they felt it was so important to search every golfer. Not a happy person out there the last time I tee’d off. Every golfer on the range was pissed and swore to never return to that place. It’s a shame they are so poorly managed and run. Don’t waste your money on them. Play elsewhere. There’s plenty of good golf in the area.

I only give this a one star due to the poor service. The course is great, its beautiful with great views. Tough course. However, you cannot drive to the parking lot to grab your clubs, carry them across the parking lot. Temps were 99 degrees and there wasnt any water. At the turn there were bottled waters setting on the hot pavement so the water was very warm. The golf cart broke down 3 times in the hot sun. The attendant re-booted the cart and did not exchange the cart, it broke down again. We sat in the hot sun for no less than a half hour stuck! When I asked if we could be compensated for future round or something.. I was told, "Whats in it for me". No attempt to make a bad day better AT ALL! Great course with no care for customer satisfaction.
Enjoy!

This has been my favorite course in the Sacramento area for years. Sadly the amenities are lacking. The last round I played there was no water on the course. They used to have water on the 12th. That's now been moved to the turn at the pop up food cart. We didn't see the cart person until the 9th and 17th holes. The Ridge and Whitney Oaks are similar options that are closer to Sacramento and have much better amenities. Over flowing trashcans in the bathroom where you check in at 9a on a Monday, not being able to drive a cart to your car and little to no water options? These are all minor details that could be easily rectified. Darkhorse you can do better.
I had to edit this post after reading different reviews that are 3 stars or less. The owner's responses are really surprising. I see why now, every time I've gone back there seem to be less golfers playing. At some point, it doesn't matter how nice the course is if the golfers don't feel welcomed. The common theme seems to be poor customer service. After reading the responses, I can't help but wonder if it starts all the way at the top.

I stumbled onto this course searching locally for a golf course to practice while attending business locally through Google maps.
(My background ) Marine Combat Wounded Veteran / Golf Academy Alumni - 2018 AA in Business Management with Applied Science in Golf.
This course was absolutely amazing from the moment I walked to the pro Shop. Nina ..(hopefully correct Spelling) welcomed me with a warm smile and amazing customer service! I started with a small bucket and was impressed with how well kept the practice area was. It was only my intention to practice but I was hanging around waiting to ask what the green fee cost were since I had no research of this course. I was definitely more interested to play this beautiful course with plush vegetation all around and amazing few of lakes. As I was waiting to ask about the cost of the green fees, a man was hustling to help put carts into the cart bar and adjust the pro shop with multiple task I approached him and asked about the green fees and to my surprise ended up having a lovely conversation with the gentleman, but soon finding out that it was the actual owner who was the gentleman I was talking to. Randy hands down was such an amazing person to talk to, specially myself living in San Diego which later found out that’s where he was raised . We started small talk about and started sharing stories which he ended up asking if I had ever played the course itself?sadly, I said I had not yet had the chance to play but now I plan to in the future since I will be up for the next few months - Without any hesitation and kind courtesy, Randy offered me a cart and sent me off to play the front 9. This was a so selfless but such a big warm welcome that will continue to impact me as I share the story of the dark horse golf club. I highly recommend visiting this course If you’re passing through or become a Member if you were local resident.

It’s unfortunate writing such a bad review as the actual golf course personally used to be one of my favorites. BUT, this can’t go without saying, Darkhorse has by far the worst ownership and customer service I have ever experienced from any golf course in my life! And when you read other reviews you will notice a theme of Attrocious ownership so I’m just sharing my experience here too. For background, I run a traveling golf league and host 20 events a year all over NorCal and I promise we will NEVER return to Darkhorse. They missed out on $5k+ and $1000s in the future because of a crazy owner. Here’s why…
- I booked our tournament 6 months in advance. They didn’t require a contract, just a card on file. That’s it. Out of nowhere about a month out from the event with no notice they randomly charge me a $500 deposit with no contract. I called and they said it’s new policy??? No notice.
- Then, 2 weeks before our event again with NO NOTICE they attempted to charge our card for the full amount for 52 players (even though I changed it to 36) and they charged for an amount not agreed upon. Fortunately the card declined, but upon declining they just immediately canceled all my tee times. No notice again.
- I call the number to talk to someone who tells me “we’re real busy I can’t deal with this now”. I call back to rebook my tee times and they send me a new invoice that I had to pay right away. I didn’t know how soon and since I was busy that day I didn’t get to it til the next day, only to go to a now cancelled invoice and tee times released.
- Now, since I didn’t want to lose our spot again I went ahead and booked our tee times manually via their website. The cost of booking online includes a $2 per player fee but I paid it anyway and secured our times. I wake up the next day to an email from the owner at 2am stating I can’t book an event online and they again cancelled all my tee times. And they DIDNT REFUND my $2 per player charge.
- not once, but twice I called Darkhorse pro shop and they answer “hello”. Literally only “hello”. I almost hung up. 😂 not once, but twice when I complained about my situation to one of the guys in the pro shop, they literally referred to their boss as a “psychopath” 🤦🏽
- I abandoned booking our event at Darkhorse, I called Alta Sierra and was able to book for 36 players with no issue. Payment due at course. Great customer service and beautiful course. I advise everyone go there instead.
In summation I advise you think twice before booking an event here. The disorganization and greed of a terrible owner and management will lead you to wish you hadn’t. Take your money elsewhere.
Thanks.

for the price you would expect a luxury golf experience instead you get dirty restrooms, a million bugs, long grass, cart girls who don’t get to you till the last hole ($10 a beer no mixed drinks), rushed tee times and a smart cart that yells at you the whole time, don’t waste your time or your money.

Played Darkhorse GC today. Eighteen unique and memorable holes. Traces of Augusta National, Bethpage (Black Course) and the prettiest and whitest sand in the 66 bunkers. Optically challenging and optically rewarding. My wife actually spent more time taking pics of the geese, deer and wild turkeys than observing me for rules violations. Pure Golf! And Michelle makes a mean Carnitas Burrito.

I’m not one to post many comments, but having walked Darkhorse in brilliant sunshine yesterday after a massive amount of recent rains, I found the course in remarkably good condition. The fairways were mowed, greens freshly cut, new crisp pins, and a small crew in the process of raking every pearl sand bunker. Yes, there were soft spots, as you would expect given the abundant creeks and streams crisscrossing the property. But you are playing golf in the Foothills in February on a beautifully designed Keith Foster course that gets better with each passing day thanks to a passionate, hardworking staff. And I’m certainly not alone sleeping better knowing Mother Nature is putting a dent to the drought and sparing us from another dreadful fire season.
Darkhorse is a course that always brings out a smile, and reminds you how lucky you are to be playing. Take a deep breath and enjoy your round.

i want to like this place because the course is in great shape, especially the greens which are outstanding.
but they make it hard. after my last poor experience, i gave it another chance yesterday when a friend booked a round.
5 hour round and not a marshal in sight.
also, check in guy charged me $14 for a medium bucket of range balls. when my friend checked in he just gave him two machine pins free.

My mom lives on this golf course and the golfers are so pleasant and polite. We recently toured the grounds and it was a breathtaking afternoon that we spent driving golf carts around the 18 hole course.
The grounds are very well maintained and the customer service is top notch- Mark in the front office is very kind and accommodating.
The carts are electric and have Bluetooth capability. They have 2 restrooms on the course and a hotdog/ snack cart that goes around which is well stocked with beverages and food.
Overall this is a gorgeous course to spend some time. They also have a driving range and an academy to practice on.

I have played the course before. Great course and usually in awesome shape. Closest to a PGA tour level test in the area. That said, I booked a 7:10am tee time 2 weeks in advance as a single. I show up on the day of my round at 6:20am and waited at the gate until guy shows up to open the gate at 6:45am once 5-6 cars are stacked up, leaving probably 5-10min at most to warm up etc. Once checked in. Then, I'm told I have to share a cart with another player. Look, I understand trying to limit carts on the course. That is simply not a policy I've ever seen in many years of being first off the tee as a single. I also play with buddies, and we share carts, always first off. I'm a low handicap player. I actually walk more often than not but not Dark horse. I explained that I suffer from some mental health issues and if I have to ride in a cart with a stranger, I'd rather not play. The guy calls me "soft" lol. Completely unnecessary to get personal. But if you can get past the pro shop and once you warm up on the course, because it won't be open early enough to do it on the range, I promise you it is a good test.

It pains me to give this rating because I really like this course, it is probably my favorite in the area.
I played there about a month ago and the coarse was in really good shape.
My issue is with an encounter my group had with an employee/grounds keeper.
In a not shell my group was 10 minutes behind schedule and an employee (on the 17th hole) decided it was the right time to make a point about how behind we were. This person was extremely rude, probably the worst I’ve been treated on a golf course ever. At one point he got into my fathers face about (my dad is 70 years old) and in my opinion was violating his personal space - very unprofessional. Very weird.
The employee basically told us if we didn’t like what he was saying we were not welcomed back, he mentioned they put so many rounds of golf a year through the course and didn’t need our business.
I tried contacting the course but never got a response.
I would say spend your money at another course in the area.

One of my favorite courses, especially with the layout. Challenging greens with significant break. Beautiful views and variety. A number of wide open fairways and a number of holes were you need to play target golf and/or strategize your tee and approach. With all this said, played last weekend and the course was in poor condition. Fairways were shredded but soft and soggy. I live in Placer county and understand that challenging dynamic for greenskeepers to battle sun damage and water but it was waterlogged in the middle of a number of fairways rendering a well hit tee shot unplayable. Greens were pockmarked with divots, not exactly the courses fault but there could be more effort to encourage players to clean up after themselves.
I was pretty disappointet, again, I love this course and the layout but I don't see myself heading back anytime soon.
4.5 stars for the course and layout.
2 stars for condition.

I played this course two days ago and was surprised and disappointed with their noncompliance with ADA rules and standards. I am an amputee and there is no accommodations for a disabled golfer. No blue flag nor an ability for them to amend their GPS cart restriction that shut down your. Cart. Hole number 2 is a classic. Uphill par 4 with multiple bunkers but no cart access on the entire hole. They should acquaint themselves withA D A rules that require cart access to fairways at least every 75 yards. I’m not a lawyer but they’d better hope one with disabilities doesn’t play there. Easy enough to fix if they’d just invest in the software for the carts that allow their employees to deactivate the shut down feature. Beautiful course but way to arrogant in their compliance to standards.

BEWARE of hidden fees. Prepaid for $100 e-credit for $80 for two players with cart and round. Showed up at pro shop only to be told there was an extra $15 per person for play on a Friday 2/17/2023 at 10:20am. Website discloses that to use credit. Play must be AFTER 10am weekdays! No mention of Monday-Thursday play without extra fees. Course also did not disclose that it was "cart path only" that day. Website is misleading. I did call ahead to clarify fees but was still not disclosed. Our group would have glady paid the extra fees if disclosed on website or written on signage before round. Seems DH will add-on fees where they could. Pro shop staff would not budge on hidden fees. Poor management.
The course was in great shape and greens ran true. Fun track.
Would have given four stars less one for NON-DISCLOSURE of fees and cart path only day.

We reserved a week in advance for an 11am tee time at $80. I checked the day before for tee times before and after my tee time and it was $60. I mentioned to the guy at the counter and he basically said "that's too bad."
They decided part way through our round that we can't drive carts on the fairway anymore and I got stuck way out in the middle of the fairway because my cart went in to limp mode and moved at like 5 feet an hour. No place to hang out. You get a hot dog cart. The fancy computer screen in the cart quit working after hole 5. Can't drive my cart to my car. The course itself was fun and challenging but I will never come back. Not worth $80

This course is beautiful and nearly on par with The Ridge in terms of play. I just can’t bring myself to go back. I’ve played here multiple times and have enjoyed most of the time. They recently bought plush new leather-seated carts with gps/Bluetooth, the works. I usually bring my own speaker in a small backpack in case I’m playing alone or with a group that I can vibe with, along with one tall can of the local variety… (cart girl service is sparse at best here) but the past two times I’ve golfed here they make you hike down to the cart barn and demand to check your bags for alcohol before giving you a cart… look I understand the “no outside alcohol” rule but I just payed $80 for a green fee and in my experience at other courses its more of a guideline… especially if you don’t provide a reliable alternative. If that doesn’t bother you though this a 5 star golf course and you should definitely golf here at least once!

GOOGLE Tyler McPhillips!!!!!
(owners son doing his best impression of a golf course manager there)
Save your time and head to The Ridge if you want to experience a fantastic well kept golf course, staff and amenities! Dark horse is sub par from where it once was and you better make sure you have your whole day free because you’ll spend a minimum of 5.5 hours out here in a cart. No Marshall, no Starter (no announcing tee times either, complete guessing game out there), they can’t even figure out how to put an igloo cooler full of ice/water on the course. Water sits out in your standard office cooler in direct sunlight all day and during the summer it is borderline undrinkable as it’s almost boiling hot. Been out there several times since new ownership and owners son is a hot head running the “clubhouse” (little shack that was the bathroom before). Probably an experiment to get him some “hard working experience” after his daddy had to shell out almost 2 million dollars for the violent case in austin if you google him!!!
Never had any problems with golf staff in my life but i see why he has issues now. you can read the rest of reviews lately and assume it’s about him. Arrogance at its finest and will belittle you at any chance he gets. Saw him try to defend there not being a clubhouse by comparing it to St. andrews and spyglass… Newsflash, you’re not in their league! I’m sure i’ll get a response here soon since he is obviously incapable of handling any criticism (hard to defend his disgusting past). STAY AWAY AND BEWARE!!!!!

The course is actually a 5 star course. One of my favorites in the area. The 3 stars comes from the service provided at the course. Another reviewer said, “it’s almost an inconvenience for them to help you”. I completely agree with this statement. I’ve been out several times and there have been no range balls available. I’ve called a couple of times about range balls and both times been told that the range was closed or there were no range balls. The personality and helpfulness of the staff is less than professional. I’ve had a chance to golf a couple of times over the last week and chosen to go elsewhere despite this course being nice. The owner needs to take a hard look at who’s employed there.

I played Darkhorse on Monday July 18th using the promoted 2-For-Golf special, which is a really good deal. I have to say this is one of my favorite courses in the greater Sacramento area for the design/layout of the course and the conditions are getting back to when it first opened, so much nicer than in past several years.
However for this round my complaints are; lack of drinking water on the course, no services like food since their clubhouse is gone. Had I know a few simple services like these were not available I would have packed them in myself as the day was 100+dgF and playing two rounds in the heat you really need good drinking water.
Lastly, during our second round at about 2:30PM the sprinklers were turned on for several holes which was a bit distracting while teeing off while getting water sprayed on you and having to hit a few balls on other playing areas of the course. Really, watering should be during the night time hours when players aren't there playing.
While the course seems to be making their way back to being a great course, please put in and have stocked cool drinking water and communicate to your customers somehow there are really no food options other than Friday through Sunday. It's simple little things like this that would have made my rating 5-stars, some service and a few standard amenities.

I showed up about a month and a half ago with friends, one being a PGA professional. My friend said that he had emailed twice and had no response from the course, regarding a discount. The gentleman working the counter was pretty rude and it shocked us. He said that he didn’t see anything and that it didn’t matter if he was a PGA professional. Leveled and closed down the clubhouse. No food or drinks after or during the round. The range is on mats and the range balls were old. The trackman system they installed was not worth it. We set a tee time about one week ahead of our play date, Tyler, one of the owners required a credit card to reserve our foursome. Our tee time was for 8:40AM. The day of our outing two of our players got sick with Covid19, so I called the course at 6:09AM to cancel our play, and Tyler told me he would be charging for all four players ($316.00) because we did not give him 24 hours notice. Both twosomes had coupons for 2 rounds for $99.00. He made no exceptions, told us too bad, if you bought tickets to a ball game and you got sick you'd still be charged, wouldn't you? I am disputing the charge on my credit card. As a side note, I could have given the tickets away or sold them, so that's not a very good analogy.
I have played golf for over 30 years, and this has never happened, if we did cancel at the last minute in the past, the course would tell us that's okay, we'll see you next time. There will be no next time with this unprofessional course management. Darkhorse has been removed from our list of courses to play in the future and I would recommend not getting sick if you plan to book a tee time. Golf is supposed to be a game for gentlemen, they were far from that!
After reading the owners response to my review , I would note that I spoke with him twice, both times he hung up on me. I tried to call him four more times which rang to voice mail, and I could not reach him. I never once cursed at him. I have played Darkhorse several times over the years, but not since this new management. We found out the evening before our tee time that two of the players could not make it, so I called as soon as they opened the next day at 6:07AM, then again at 6:09AM. I am not Criss Angel and cannot predict the future. Yes, we knew your policy, but figured with the dire circumstances you would be gentlemen and not the tryants you obviously are! He never offered us anything, we all bought coupons for $99 play for two over two weeks prior to our tee times.

Nice course! Be warned the greens were a bit wet and heavy which caused lots of markings to occur on the green. Bumpy in spots but all in all fast and the course itself is in good shape. It winds through oak trees and streams in the foothills. Be warned there is no clubhouse currently so make sure you bring enough golfballs! All in all nice course price is a bit high for what you get. Quality layout holes are interesting with few blind shots. Nice design fun atmosphere if price was 20* less it would be five stars. Unfortunately facilities are lacking compared to other courses, driving range was a mess, carts beat up, bunkers in bad shape, play was really backed up, greens had just been sanded and were not consistent. I've been playing this course for several years and played another round yesterday. This is always a challenging course but because it's in the best condition by far since I've been playing here, it's much more enjoyable when your getting your butt kicked by it.
Fairways are beautiful, greens were nice but pretty firm which made a tough course even tougher and the tee boxes are getting better.
On the negative side, pace of play could be improved, I played a mind numbing 5 1/2 hr round here last month on a weekday and yesterdays was a decent 4 1/2 hrs but it wasn't that crowded. I think some of the
problem is that's it's a hard course for one and carts are restricted quite a ways back from the greens, 100 yards on most holes, which causes a lot of extra walking sometimes to get to your ball.
I'll keep playing here because course condition is what I care most about and that's what management seems to be focused on.

If nice views and a 5.5hr round are what you are looking for this is the place for you. Shame because it is a nice track.

I visited from out of state, the golf was fine. Unfortunately years later I still have to reply STOP to these annoying texts. They do stop from that number but I still get annoying texts from a different number. I wish it would STOP!

i've played here a handful of times and always had a good time. i played last saturday and the course is in great shape, especially the bunkers which have improved noticeably from last time.
sadly, this was a poor experience. the round took 5 hours and 20 minutes which, as golfers, you'll understand is excruciating. we had to wait on every single shot and there was no sign of a marshal or course staff to help the slow foursome in front move along.
i was also disappointed to learn that booking in person or over the phone costs over $30 more than booking online. that seems like a disproportionately heavy premium to pay.
i contacted the golf course via their website contact form on monday and did not receive the courtesy of a response.
it's hard to support a course which seems to care little for pace of play and customer service.
i can't imagine i'll play here again :(

in response to the reply from "the owner"
thanks for not really reading my message and for not addressing either of my main points.
other people enjoyed the course? that's great - i am happy for them. i did not.
your response is, effectively "we don't care you had a bad experience and we're not going to do anything to try to turn it around"
i am happy for you that, in these challenging times, you're able to just tell a disappointed customer to get lost and go elsewhere.
i'll do just that. in business, this is how you lose a customer forever.
best of luck to you.
