really disappointed. The service has consistently been poor, and when I’ve tried to raise concerns, the manager has been dismissive and rude. The equipment often isn’t clean, which is surprising for a gym at this price point. On top of that, the pool is much smaller than expected and often overcrowded

Walked in after a 10-hr day of financial modeling and arguing with investors just to be greeted with - “do you work on a golf course.” Kudos to the front desk staff who happened to be working on 8/26/25 at 6:07 PM - she really woke my sleep-deprived body up at this time of day for the first time in my life, to the extent which I felt reborn. The question was piercing of its own nature, providing more shock waves through my brain and pressure to my bloodstream than a pack of 12-mg LUCY wintergreens. More stimulating than a ‘pls fix thx - sent from my iPhone’ email on a Sunday afternoon. The rest of the conversation was nothing short of exciting, ending with the cherry on top: “enjoy your workout.” Thank you, I no longer need my music. Now I can happily enjoy my extended work out after a long day of ~ aerating greens and raking bunkers ~ if you insist. The broken AC in the locker room last week and the day without hot water didn’t even prompt me to leave this review, but this eye-opening question truly did, and it will most likely keep me awake tonight. As an optimist, I plan to use this adrenaline as I return to the office later and log back on.

Joined this gym two weeks ago and already started to experience inconveniences. Today, 8/13 I was at the gym trying to take shower and there was no hot water! I had to shower with cold water! The steam room wasn’t operating because of no hot water, too. By the time I received an email about the issue, I was already at the gym. Last week there was no air conditioning in this hot weather. Others shared that issues with the air conditioning were for consistent two weeks. So disappointing!! Do your regular inspections to prevent these issues.

I've been a member at this Equinox since 2019. The only reason I'm leaving is because I'm moving, and I'm so sad about it! Everyone is so kind, from the front desk staff and maintenance crew to the class instructors and trainers. I trained with Chris Manous, and I can't recommend him enough! He is so knowledgable, welcoming, and fun to train with. I looked forward to my sessions every week, and I've gotten stronger and learned so much. He really tailors the sessions to your goals and is a great motivator.
My favorite class instructor is Michael Gilbert. He teaches cycle and he is the best! Every class is a blast, and he makes everyone feel seen and welcomed. His classes are always full, and there's good reason for that! If you're looking for a gym with great amenities, awesome staff, and where you can find community, Equinox is worth checking out.

Gym Review Summary
Positive Points:
1. Cleanliness and Atmosphere
• The gym is clean and smells nice.
• Majority of members are polite and respectful.
2. Friendly Staff
• Most of the staff are nice and helpful.
3. Convenient Location
• Located next to Google and other dining places.
Negative Points:
1. Operating Hours
• Closes at 9 pm on weekdays and 5 pm on weekends – considered lazy for a high-end gym.
2. Equipment Issues
• Machines are old and rusty.
• Machines are not lubricated properly.
3. Pool and Spa Issues
• Pool is outside – members have to walk through the gym while wet.
• No jacuzzi and pool is not deep enough.
• No sauna – other Equinox gyms have saunas.
4. Steam Room Problems
• Non-members enter steam room in dirty, smelly clothes – needs security to prevent this.
• Some members wear shoes or clothes in the steam room, creating an unsanitary environment.
5. Weird or Problematic Members
• Example: A man in grey sweatpants tucked into socks and a yellow shirt leaves smelly food in the locker room and offers open Gatorade to others – suspicious behavior.
• Some members stalk others or make inappropriate comments in the locker rooms – potential harassment issue.
6. Rude Receptionist
• One receptionist (described as short, Asian, and buff) is rude and negative.
7. Safety Concerns Outside Gym
• Street next to the gym feels unsafe due to the presence of homeless people – issue with city governance, not the gym itself.
Suggestions for Improvement:
• Extend operating hours.
• Upgrade and maintain gym machines.
• Add a jacuzzi and sauna.
• Improve steam room security – consider adding a buff security guard.
• Address member misconduct and inappropriate behavior.
• Train or replace the rude receptionist.

Most of the staff are genuinely nice and supportive. The maintenance crew works diligently, keeping the space clean and accommodating schedule conflicts with professionalism. The private trainers and most front desk staff deserve credit for their consistent dedication.
Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Nancy, the manager. She avoids taking responsibility, hiding behind company policies instead of exercising leadership or judgment. If every issue can be solved by company rules, then her role serves no purpose. Her lack of empathy is equally disappointing and hypercritical —offering polite platitudes while leaving members frustrated with unresolved concerns. Leadership isn't about parroting rules—it's about finding solutions and standing by them.

I joined Equinox at the end of May 2024 and have been so pleased with my experience so far. I just turned 40 and Equinox is helping me get leaner and stronger (I have already lost 6-7 pounds in 3-4 months and reduced my body mass index, overall body fat %, and blood pressure). Annie, my membership advisor, was pleasant and polished, but not pushy, in helping me join (she has since moved to the Huntington Beach location). I was initially frustrated that the locker room did not have locks, but the Newport Beach location underwent some renovations this summer and new lockers with combination style locks were installed (and in hindsight, purchasing a $7 lock from Target was not a big deal and I somewhat miss the old, bigger lockers which allowed me to hang skirts and dresses easily). All the staff are friendly and professional. The facilities are very clean and the white, crisp towels and steam room are wonderful. I wish Equinox still had a partnership/purchasing agreement with Kiehl's, but Grown Alchemist bath products are still nice. It is an investment and pricey, but it has been worth it for me, especially because I love the variety of classes and instructors. A few shout-outs to some of the incredible instructors: Matthew Makings (Barre, Pilates Mat and Cardio Sculpt... precise, polite, and lovely, master of long, lean muscle building), Danielle English (Pilates Mat... fabulous form and cueing, so happy she is in the OC, I used to take her class in LA at Speir Pilates and excited she will be teaching reformer Pilates at Speir Newport Beach later this year), William Bui (Strength Training - Metabolic Conditioning, Athletic Conditioning, Circuit Training, Tabata... Will and his girlfriend, Cynthia, who also works for Equinox are adorable and so welcoming, you can contact Cynthia at the Huntington Beach location to join, Will's energy is off the charts and his own personal health/weight loss journey is inspiring), Kelly Hesp (Barre... hello model and former Lakers Girl with incredible flexibility who can supercharge anyone's day... work girl!), Rachele Marsh (Barre and Pilates... #bodygoals, hands-on instructor, nurturing/encouraging), Alexis Holden (Yoga... seriously the sweetest and appreciate how she incorporates muscle activation and shoulder flossing)! I have also enjoyed Lindsey Treadwell (Barre... model/former Alvin Ailey dancer, a little bouncy/tough on my middle-aged knees but a great workout), Kisha Maher (Barre... solid, strong and cut, challenging), and Natalie Makardish (great energy and never stops smiling). I am a physician (outpatient) but find the hours and class times to be accommodating. Highly recommend you check out one of the OC clubs (Newport Beach location is my favorite, Huntington Beach location has a beautiful view of the ocean but no pool, Irvine/Sports Club Orange County location is multilevel with more class offerings/larger studios, valet parking, squash, and slightly younger crowd but the facility does feel a bit dated in my opinion)!

Cozy building gym. Clean, relatively well maintained though there isn’t much square footage. At least one of most gym equipment and validated parking. Usually don’t have a hard time getting the equipment I need even during peak hours.
This is a gym for the business developer trying to network. Members are an overflow from the white bro culture from Newport.

The opening time is wrong on google maps, no one update it and it is misleading for a long time…actually
it only opens m-t till 9pm, and weekend 5pm. I expect equinox to have better time, especially weekends. We are working people, we wish to have more flexibility working out during weekends. Also, some classes only offer at noon time, like cardio dance, those are twice a week, at least arrange one classes in the afternoon, so it can fit working members schedule…

I recently got a facial at the spa and I just have to share how incredible my experience was with Lilia. She is absolutely AMAZING!
Lilia took the time to sit down with me and walk me through ways to enhance my skincare routine, explaining each product she used with such care and knowledge. She made sure I felt comfortable the entire time, and I could genuinely feel her passion for what she does. Her hands are truly magical! Thank you Lilia!!! :)

My experience with this gym started off on a fantastic note. The equipment is spotless and everybody seems to have just a generally good vibe. The trainers are willing to put in as much effort as you are, and that is a really good driving force at least for someone like me. However, the issues started once I pre-purchased a 12 pack of training session with them. I had of course, given them my credit card to pay for the monthly fees so once I had my last session, I obviously stopped going to my trainer, who I had a very good back-and-forth with. I stopped going to my trainer and we had a understanding that our training sessions had stopped since it was all pre-purchased and that was on the dotted line and everything. A whole month passes and low and behold, they had been charging me each week for training sessions that I never agreed to pay for. What’s worse is that my trainer and I had had many conversations over that month and once I went to him directly to question these charges, all he had to say was talk to the billing department. I felt an immediate disconnect from the staff and immediately started feeling like a number. I discussed this with the general manager of my location as well as a couple people at their headquarters and you would not believe the amount of effort and time it took just to get my membership canceled. The “canceling a gym membership “is a nightmare, is absolutely true especially with this Jim. Next part is that it frankly got sad. A whole six months after this debacle I received a collection bill for an additional $500 from them saying that since I had turned off my credit card after having them cancel my membership, that they had continued to charge me and they put it on my credit. On my credit! After having discussed multiple times with multiple different people about getting this membership canceled. So it just goes to show that even though the face of a company is welcoming sadly there is always something in the back end that comes to bite you. I thought I read through all the paperwork they gave me pretty darn well and am convinced that they are charging me and other people in a… I won’t say illegal way, but frankly it kind of feels like that. so all in all I was only a member of this gym for about eight months and canceling the membership ended up costing me three times the amount. All in all… As long as you have the money to never cancel your membership then you are good, otherwise I would start with a 24 hour fitness.

My least favorite EQX in the OC area, given its size/studio rooms/overall feel/how much it offers. One perk is that, with the few times I have been here, it's never TOO crowded.
Feels like more of a studio for those who work nearby. Only a few minutes from the EQX Sports Club OC, so go there instead.
Cycling with Matt here is phenomenal here though!

Lack of varieties classes at good times- in early morning or evenings cardio dance, Pilates, barre, any hot yoga, hit classes weekdays. They charge too much for personal training and reformer Pilates. Other studios like club studio has reformer classes that comes with the regular membership. Classes are just cancelled without notice if only few people signed up. Which is not cool if I come from 10 miles away to attend these classes. Even 1-2 person signed up they should hold classes. Weekend classes get pretty crowded since mostly in mornings, they should add more classes in the afternoons and evenings also. They also should have more classes at 7 or 8 pm and open later hours like closing at 9 or 10. The equipments used in classes are not enough or just gross and old. They don’t clean those weights, sticks, belts, blocks, rings, balloons, etc …equipments. They said when I enrolled last summer that they are going to upgrade the locker rooms to digital locks around end of the year 2023. Now we still have to bring our own locks. I feel I’m paying too much monthly now it’s not worth it, and just switch to regular gym like 24 hrs paying $50 a month and I can even bring guests for classes
all the time more than 3-5 times a year.
Pros- they do keep locker rooms pretty clean, they staff are friendly and the coaches and class teachers are very friendly and good. Classes are good and fun.

DO NOT come to this gym and definitely don’t sign up their personal trainer.
1) My trainer is unprofessional. Only count reps and always get distracted. And I have no results after workout compared to other training sessions I have done in the past.
2) Very crowded during peak hours and tiny environment with minimal equipments
3) Bad customer service as many said. NOBODY WILL CARE ABOUT YOU ONCE YOU PAID!
Update: received my membership and personal trainer refund after investigation.

By far the worst equinox I have been to, old machines, squeaky ones as well ( like the leg abduction ones) and the worst part Mathew at the front, he was talking to a girl who is probably taking a break from her work out and when I asked him about directions for the lockers, you can tell that he got annoyed and all he cared about is returning to his conversation. I validated my parking ticket and the indicator light didn’t light up and when I asked Mathew on the way out about , he was talking to the same girl ( 90 mins later) and he just blurred and shrug his shoulders and didn’t want to help. Definitely not equinox experience

This Equinox has consistent issues with water pressure. Faucets and showers in the men's and women's restroom drip extremely slowly... It's inadequate considering the $250 price tag per month. Better off showering at home or sticking to Irvine/Hunt Beach locations!

I've been a member here for 16 years. Since the very first day it opened. Is it pricy? I'm dedicated and committed to a fit lifestyle. I go 4-5× week. If I'm going to dedicate that much time to this place, it's because I'm worth it. It's NEVER crowded. The staff is stellar. The equipment is OK. But the gym itself is impeccably clean. I ❤️ this gym.

Tried a few gyms in the past and was generally put off either by the staff being poorly trained/not caring, undesirable facilities, or being too small for the population of people its serving. It’s hard to justify the price for what you get here. I guess for the nearly $200/month price, I thought I would get something special. I could never get the hang of the weird clsss times, and they are either overflowing, or totally dead - no in between. The gym itself is pretty small, and the locker rooms are nothing remarkable. At 5-times the price as other gyms, you would expect something special, but unfortunately, his location just doesn’t deliver. To make matters worse, the personnel are very pushy. I just felt like I was being sold all of the time, and then once they got my money, I was forgotten about. The shining stars are the trainers - you can tell that many of them who teach the classes are very passionate about what they do and really care about helping people.

It's a smaller Equinox than the other two in Orange County. It's nowhere near as nice as the other two locations. I don't see why you would pay for this one at the same price as the other two locations because this one is tiny. The staff is friendly. This place gets very packed in the mornings and lunch time. I had my first Power of 10 session here yesterday. Their equipment is top notch! And the trainers really cares about your safety. I felt comfortable and ready before I started working out. I was about 3 machines in, and I started to panic because I wasn't use to working out at all. But the trainer reassured me that I was OK and that I can do it. After I was done I was offered a snack, I sat down and we chatted about how muscles work, and how my muscles felt. Definitely glad I started coming here!

I have had membership with equinox since 2012. I live in LA so I always go to the sunset one, but I have family down here so I come down here very often. Only in past 2 months I lost THREE pairs of gym shoes at this gym. Once I left my shoes on the bench to go take shower and after I came back they were gone. Two other times I somehow left them at the gym, and when I came back next day they were gone!
BUT THE WORSE STORY IS THIS ONE: So yesterday (August 1st) after I finished my work out I put my cellphone back in my gym bag. But I did not lock my locker. Then I went to the bathroom and when I came back after 5 min, my sunglasses were gone. So actually somebody was watching me and after I went to the bathroom, he/she opened my locker and unzipped my bag and took my sunglasses out of my bag!!! THIS IS SOOOOO CREEPY! This never happened to me in LA!!! I lost about $600 worth of my belonging only in past 2 months at this gym. It's about three months membership fee!!! Thanks for the amazing environment!
