Disappointing Lack of Membership Support During Standard Operating Hours.

I am writing this review based on a highly disappointing experience while attempting to inquire about and join Equinox Palo Alto.
I visited the club this morning, Monday, November 17th, at 7:30 AM, with the explicit intention of signing up for a membership. To my surprise, I was informed that the individual responsible for handling new memberships and tours does not begin work until 9:00 AM.

As a potential new member, I was effectively turned away and instructed to return later.
I find it highly unusual and unacceptable that a premium fitness facility, operating during what I consider standard morning business hours, would not have personnel available to address new membership inquiries. This operational oversight suggests a significant lapse in member acquisition focus and customer service.

This incident seems consistent with other negative reviews citing organizational and service issues. For anyone seriously considering this location, I strongly recommend exploring other gyms in the area that can accommodate basic administrative needs during their operating hours.
I cannot recommend this gym based on this initial, frustrating interaction.

Avoid this place. The equipment is constantly broken, the locker rooms are filthy, and it's always overcrowded. I've seen the same pieces of duct-taped equipment "out of order" for months. Canceling my membership was a nightmare of hidden fees. Do not recommend.

What a gym! Don’t know where to begin? Maybe it’s Crowded all the time? Finally got a corner to exercise, a personal training manager yelled at me? Very uncomfortable to be back to this gym, now all the 48 personal training and 48 pilates sessions I paid
are non refundable?

This place is a waste of money. I’ve heard in other cities is better but Palo Alto mgmt is not good. Selection of machines is only average. Good luck trying to get a response from mgmt on any issue at all. It’s just ignored. My in-shape membership prior was $80 and had better equipment and much friendlier staff. GM was always present. This place staff isn’t engaging in any way with the exception of 1 girl at the front desk. Easily most disappointing membership purchase of my life

Awful pretentious policies. When I went for a tour I was asked for my ID, I assumed that they will just check and give it back. But they captured a photo of it without my consent. The guy at the reception had an attitude like he's doing me a favour by letting me see the gym. Avoid this place.

Please super caution with this place, I left my stuffs in a locked locker with code on Sunday when the gym is almost closing and I forgot to take it from the locker, and I went back next day the locker is empty, I checked with front desk, they told me they will check the lost and found for me but said there is nothing there. I requested to check lost and found myself, but they denied my request and won't let me. Told me they will check all lockers after close, but where the heck my stuffs could be if only the gym can open the lockers ?

Awful customer service. I was promised a three-month student membership with the option to cancel if I provided proof of relocation within 30 days. I submitted my new lease, which began August 1, yet the Assistant General Manager, Alon, claimed this was insufficient proof. Since accounts are charged on the 22nd, my August 1 lease clearly falls within the 30-day requirement (only 22 days later). Despite this, my cancellation request has been ignored, responses have taken multiple business days. As of writing this review, the issue remains unresolved.

Avoid Alon Ko like the plague -- he cancelled my membership, and then, 3 days later, decided he made a mistake, and then attempted to forge a new membership agreement to bill me for 10 months (~$2500+) with full knowledge that I had moved out of California.

If you'd like to avoid Management forging membership agreements in your name to bill you $2500, please don't set foot in this place. Alon Ko may currently be under investigation by the State of California and the Santa Clara District Attorney for his conduct.

Echoing other statements about vulture-like practices. Upon injury and travel, I went in to freeze my account, "no problem, with a $50 charge my monthly fee would be waived." I was charged the monthly fee plus the $50, then told the monthly fee would be refunded after my 12 month commitment. Upon moving 11 months into my membership and still injured and *moving* (eligible for early cancellation), my monthly fee (back during the freeze) was not refunded after multiple contacts with the rude manager. So, I basically paid $50 extra to mouth the words that I'd like a vacation hold. Wow. Multiple interactions with the sociopathic manager proved totally oblique and unhelpful.

Hour of operation is a joke, I went there Saturday 4:30PM to pick up an order from equinox shop they told me shop has a different hour closed at 4PM on weekends, the next day I went at 3PM they told me they left early at 2PM because of “short of hands”. The management of this location is pure garbage.

I got the ad saying 1 months is for free. So I showed up there and been greeted by extremely unfriendly arrogant Asian girl. Then manager Ryan showed up. No smile, looked arrogant and uninterested right away. He stares at you without blinking and smiling which was very scary. He asked where I work to see whether I worth his time or not.

I mentioned 1 month free ad and assumed that I’ll be working out there for a month and then decide if I want to sign up or not.

He said “no. It’s not how it works. You sign up today for annual membership and we’ll give you first month for free”.
I said “ how can I sign up if I didn’t even see your gym”

So he took me on a tour. He was extremely annoyed, uninterested and just quiet the whole time.

He pressed the elevator button continuously for like 20 times. (I don’t think he’s alright)

After tour I asked if I can get a day pass, workout and then come back and decide.
He said no and I said thanks for your time and started to walk out.
He got up to walk me out then didn’t say bye. And just quietly went back to his office, without walking me out.
Rude and arrogant stuff prevented me from trying and signing up.
The ad was so misleading. I regret my lost time.

I am so tired of driving for an hour just to see the club closed during regular hours. This location doesn’t let their customers know when they close unexpectedly. This is the 3rd time in 3 months! Equinox is a good gym, with good equipment and everything in excellent condition. I take almost all of the dance classes, because it is something I love very much. My favorite teachers, Soo Kim and Izzy Cervantes, are without a doubt the best endorphins you can find at Equinox. However, yesterday we had a problem that has been with us for a few months and even since last summer. The sound equipment and air conditioning were malfunctioning again. I am incredulous that even paying over $300 per month, this problem has not been resolved. We have at least 30 people in each dance class. I believe that the amount you receive from all of us could pay for a new air conditioning system and adequate sound for the teachers to work and for us to have a decent class without getting sick from the heat.

Today, as per the email I received, I arrived on time for the class, with a 5-minute delay because I needed to use the restroom. However, a staff member Desiree, prevented me from entering the class. I completely understand the gym's rules, which is why I did not insist on entering.

I would like to suggest that, just as you were diligent in preventing me from entering the class, the same diligence be applied to resolving the issues with the air conditioning and sound system.

With more than 30 clients in the room, and the air conditioning at this temperature, they will only change it when someone faints from the heat, that's all, so far nothing has changed, just a small fan in front of the sound system, what a lack of empathy for a gym that I pay $315 a month for, and a room that has 30 students, how long will this continue?

I would like to thank you in advance for your attention and understanding in understanding my disappointment with Equinox.

I have been going to Equinox Palo Alto for last 6months and I have a PT ever since I joined. The only thing that blows my fuse is the slow/no communication by the Equinox staff. It is a brand of unprofessionalism that they all seem to wear without sorry. When you are up for a renewal, they chase you and are very responsive but as soon as you renew you next 24-48 session pack, their communication dies. It’s almost as if your emails are getting lost on Bermuda Triangle. If evryone in Equinox staff can learn professional communication etiquette, that would make this place a great workout place. I don’t need a workout place to add to my work. I just need it to work out.

Just had a massage with Paul at Equinox Palo Alto, and I have to say—he is absolutely incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this relaxed in my life. My muscles were so tense going in, and now I feel like I could go out and run a marathon with ease. He’s got a real gift—his technique is spot on, and you can tell he knows exactly what he’s doing.

What I really appreciated was how professional and thorough he was. He explained everything before and during the session, so I knew what to expect. He also gave me some great advice on how to maintain this feeling and take care of my muscles afterward.

Honestly, I’m struggling to keep my eyes open writing this because I’m that relaxed. If you need a massage, do yourself a favor and book with Paul. He’s amazing.

I brought my MRI dated December 11 on December 19. They told me I need just a note from the doctor. During the holidays I didn’t get it and came in with MRI records on December 28th when they already charged me for January. Jon and Alon Did not refund me for January membership. They are saying it’s the policy and they cannot refund for January membership fee. What a shameful behavior of a company management.

Toured this gym with my mother as we are new to the area and trying to find a nice gym, there are some nice amenities however the membership is definitely overpriced. I’m sure this gym is great if you are someone who likes to take a class once a month and isn’t really committed to working out as the free weights section is very lack luster and the gym is mostly classes and cardio machines. For a Tuesday at noon gym was crowded so I can only imagine how it is at peak hours. The woman who gave us a tour was very nice but Mike is a tool, there are many better options close by and I believe signing up for a year contract here would be a decision most would regret.

I contacted this club in February to freeze my account and notify them I've been injured. The person at the front desk mentioned they would put a freeze and assist with reimbursement. Now, 6 MONTHS down the line, they still charge me for a "membership."... I'm not a member. Chris Ybona, the Assistant General Manager, exhibited unprofessional behavior during my interaction. He was rude, raised his voice, and even hung up on me while I was trying to ask a question. His actions clearly indicate a lack of respect for customers and a power-hungry attitude. I'm not one to write reviews, but people should be aware of how they treat people.

The Gym itself is okay. You can find cleaner and better-maintained gyms that treat you like a real person for less money.

This is the only Equinox I’ve been to, so my review is based on value compared to other nearby gyms (24 Hour, Movement). I’ve been a member for about 7 months now and feel satisfied with the offering. There are plenty of treadmills and cardio equipment in both sections of the building. The squat racks are in one section and limited, so there’s a wait for them 50% of the time.

The monthly price is over 10x other chains, but I was willing to pay a premium for the cleanliness, nicer building/interiors, nicer restrooms, and minimal high school students. The group fitness instructors are great and there are a variety of classes and teachers. I’ve only experienced one no-show with one of the yoga class instructors.

Overall I’d rate this gym a 3.5/5; it’s a bit expensive for the amount of time I’m able to use it, and I plan to cancel after my year contract is up.

The worst mistake I made was joining this gym. DON'T! They are super great and friendly and welcoming until you sign. Then you never hear from them. They are not concerned with your concerns at all. How hard is it to respond to an email???

It is a total scam too. I emailed and emailed them with concerns and they never responded. Then I received this: "You started your membership on xx/xx/xxxx and it would be 48 days from when you requested to cancel on xx/xx/xxxx. Since this is beyond 45 days..." What the hell is this about 45 days? I was NEVER told this and would have for SURE cancelled if it was possible within 45 days.

I was hopeful to return to swimming but this place is unfriendly, unwelcoming and it's a hike to just get to the pool. The pool is cold and small. There is no hot tub. The locker room is arranged so that there is hardly room to move around. The environment made me not want to come back.

The year-term is AWFUL and should be changed to allow people to try this place out and see if meets their needs. I will cancel the day my contract is up and never recommend this place to anyone.

STAY AWAY.

Emailed the manager 2x about cancellation due to relocation - no response.

Spoke with membership advisors 2x about my credit card being mischarged (I switched to select but was still charged all-access). The first advisor told me she'll handle it, then didn't. The second advisor said he'll get back to me in 15min, but then got off work without ever speaking to me. Of course I also emailed the manager about this issue and got no response.

So all in all, I've either emailed or spoke to Equinox in person 5 times, and they haven't even received an acknowledgement or response let alone solving my issues. The entire staff is utterly incompetent at dealing with customers. Did I also mention that this all occurred within a span of 3 weeks? The bathrooms are not cleaned as there are always water puddles around the sink, puddles on the floor, showers are never clean. Puddles on the floor are a huge liability if somebody slips.

This is hands down the worse Equinox I have ever been to.

Ridiculous year long contract terms (even Comcast has a month trial period to opp out if you are unsatisfied). The locker rooms are small and consistently plagued with wet floors, dirty sinks and bathroom stalls with funky smells. The classes are terribly inconsistent with one of their instructors informing us that the speaker system was broken so he put music on his phone and told us it happens all the time. The gym layout is odd with a ton of open area and lacking in equipment for its large size. The parking is usually full and the front desk seems unhappy to be there. After numerous contacts with management its clear that the team needs more training on how to treat members and their staff, whatever community college they came from its clear business management was not their focus.

This gym is stuck in the past, suburban in its clientele and pedestrian in equipment and service. For the rates they demand it should at least compete with its sister locations in SF or LA but instead it reminded me more of the 24 hour fitness clubs I have been to. If I was in my later years and wanted to take a mediocre spin class I would really like this place but I'm not and I do not recommended this gym.

Pros- juice bar, outdoor pool

Cons- gym management, cleanliness, outdated contract obligations, old equipment, classes and instructors, parking, and lackluster atmosphere.

I have asked Equinox for the past two months to cancel my membership and they continue to charge my card. Beware, they do not respect member requests for membership cancellations.

This is a highly unprofessional practice and fraudulant to charge people even after you have requested to cancel the membership for several months. Yana Lusher and Kesha Collins from their member services team are not representing the company well.

The focus at Equinox Palo Alto is on aesthetics, not maintenance or function. The gym looks great. However, many of the weight machines are long overdue for major repairs or replacement (example: weight stacks stick to the rails because they are so worn.) They place squat racks and other equipment in front of windows not mirrors so watching your form is difficult. Other machines that are in front of a mirror are placed in ways that also make watching your form difficult. The sinks in the locker room are either hot or cold and the electronic faucets decide, not you (most are broken and you can't adjust the temperature. But hey, they look good). The men's locker room is very crowded and hot in the mornings making getting ready for work difficult and sweaty. Trainers take up a disproportionate amount of machines/space leaving their iPads and other personal items on equipment so they can have their clients work on 3 machines at at time during peak times. Equinox does periodic surveys and I've spoken to management on several occasions but nothing seems to change.

Out of all the Equinox locations I've been to on the east coast and in SF this is one of my favorites. It's very large with a ton of equipment, cardio machines, and group fitness spaces. This place gets very busy. Even at 6AM the gym can get fairly crowded. I'd say that's the only negative (and also the increasing membership fees).

I've also found the crowd here to be very friendly and nice.

Yes, I checked- my deodorant is working just fine.

Dirty, especially the men's lockers where guys shave in the steam room and dye their facial hair in front of the mirrors leaving permanent black marks on the counters. Shower drains clogged with what looks like pubic hair. Long lines at the shower, too cold water in the pool, unfriendly staff, crowded classes, "reserved'" equipment by members who leave their stuff on them till they finish doing whatever...

I have been a member almost since they first opened. I have never had a "bad" instructor, it is beyond clean with the staff wiping down the yoga mats after every class, Kiel products and friendly and helpful staff.
It is not inexpensive but you get what you pay for and if you go enough, it is a good value.

Sure, it's pretty expensive, but Equinox is a great gym and you're paying for what you get. The gym is super clean and has everything I need for my lifting, as well as plenty of cardio machines. Very rarely have I ever had to wait to use anything in the gym. There are plenty of complimentary classes, but I've only done the Vinyasa Yoga, which I enjoyed. There is also a pool on the roof that I've used a few times before accepting the fact that I'm a terribly inefficient swimmer. I could pay a trainer a lot of money to make me more efficient, but... it's a lot of money.

It's the little things that really make Equinox worth it for me. The chilled Eucalyptus towels sound absolutely unnecessary but are incredibly refreshing if you're working hard. The endless supply of Kheil's shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and body lotion leave me feeling SO SMOOTH after a workout. The complementary razors in the shower room have helped me keep my abnormally large head bald and shiny for months.

All staff members, from the greeter at the front desk to the staff who keep the place spotless, are extremely friendly and personable.

If you're thinking about Equinox, come check it out. If the price tag scares you, try looking at it as a commitment device. You'll certainly be pushing yourself to get the most out of that extravagant monthly membership fee!

Watch out - they don't honor their commitments.

Review keeps getting hidden - probably the equinox.

Watch out - they don't honor their commitments. Upon joining I was promised a gift card to the spa, shop and this never happened despite several attempts of talking to management.

Because the manager that had signed me up had been fired, they wouldn't honor what he committed to.

Also, very unclean and unfriendly - I was a member of the San Mateo location for several years, did pilates and trained there. This is an entirely different experience - I would never shower in the locker rooms in palo alto it's so dirty and over-crowded.

Also, they make everything difficult - freezing your membership, booking training, etc. it's very poor customer service. Management is rude and arrogant.

If you want a gym in the area that has a higher-end feel, try the JCC or NoXcuses in mid-town, much better staff and experience.

Everyone treats you like a king here, top notch customer services. I am not a member here, but I visited this place a few times to check out their gym, very clean(yes coming from a germaphobes here). Love their second floor swimming pool, as if I have stepped into a whole different world there. I'd love to be one of their members but they are too far from my home =( , always on a watch out for their new location near Cupertino .

I have been offered $200.00 membership for 24hrs and I didn't like the 24hrs gym. I decided to explore different gyms, by accident I noticed the Equinox and I tried different classes for the first complimentary days and as soon as I attended the Dancation class by Heath Hunter, I made up my mind to signe up. Heath's energy is phenomona and he is a creative performer. His class is full of life and excitement, even on some days that I'm not in a good mood and lack of energy, attending Dancation turn on my energy to my ideal level. This gym is very clean and has a great cleaning crew. I love this gym....It was the best choice for picking up the gym for me so far...

very expensive. they recently expanded in summer of 2013, but didn't expand the locker rooms, so it can get really, really crowded in there, which also means that since they expanded, the cleanliness of the locker rooms has gone down hill big time. in the end, they got bigger, charge more, but quality went way down. i moved over to the bay club in cupertino even though it's farther from work.
