Been a member since 2021, and unfortunately the value proposition has only gone down in that time. This gym is small, but in a great location, so it is almost constantly packed. I grant that there may not be much Equinox can do about this, besides open another gym closer in the area, or go back to the Covid-era design of staggering times for members. It gets so crowded during after work and weekend mornings that it is often challenging to complete a workout, unless you want to use the cardio machines (actually, one suggestion: fewer cardio machines and more room for weights and weight machines).

The overall "feel" of Equinox has decreased in my time here. It no longer feels luxury- it's nice, but feels hurried, crowded, and busy. The cleaning staff are thorough but unfriendly (one literally opened my shower door and was on the verge of spraying me with the disinfectant hose before he looked up and realized it was occupied; more than once the cleaning staff has run the mop across my feet when cleaning the floor because they don't look around or pay much attention). The water fountains are often broken (a small dribble comes out instead of a stream) and rarely cleaned (mold lining the inside). Oh, and every year, your membership price will go up by a certain percentage, anyway.

Unfortunately, I feel like this has led to a knock-on effect with the culture of the people who use the gym. In the four years I've been here, it's gotten much worse: used towels are routinely left everywhere in the men's locker room, people hose the sauna sensor until the temperature is barely tolerable (and probably not therapeutic, anyways), and there are only 3 toilets in the men's bathroom (and no bathroom at all on the 1st and 3rd floors, and one co-ed private bathroom on the fourth floor).

Some of these are general Equinox complaints, and some of these are Union Street specific, but by far the most site-specific one I have is that the hours for this gym are atrocious, particularly on weekends. Staying open later might alleviate some of the insane congestion that happens at peak hours, but Friday through Sunday it is very hard to work out here, particularly for those of us who have weekend shifts.

Decided to give this place a try while traveling, and the only good thing I can say is the location. The equipment is extremely old and worn down, and the layout makes no sense — spread across several awkward floors. The StairMaster on the third floor is laughable: the AC blows right in your face, and at 5’3” I still didn’t have enough headroom to fully stand and do the exercise. Did I mention the equipment is old? Definitely not worth it. Never complaining about my gym in Los Angeles again.

Why is the membership significantly more expensive here than the one I had in Miami but closes at 6 on Saturday and Sundays vs 8pm in Miami? Also there’s way less class options and availability.

been a member for a couple months- could not be happier. from the warm welcome you get when you arrive from alex, chloe and the rest of the front desk team, to kylie in member services, to the ample equipment, and the cleanliness of the facilities which is super important to me, equinox union st checks off all the boxes. i always look forward to getting in a workout, even on days where i'm just dragging- great space, with a great team.

Chelsea and Alex (general manager and sales rep) are, by far, the most unprofessional people I've ever worked with.

It's unbelievable to me the level of unprofessionalism I experienced from this team over the last month. I was overcharged for my membership, have been asking for and not receiving several of the benefits I was promised when signing up, and I'm consistently given ETAs - none of which are met.

You would expect that for 300$ a month you get a good service, well that’s not the case. They charge me 50$ for no reason and they never told me why despite calling several times. Machines are old and there is not enough equipment for the amount of people. DO NOT RECOMMEND THID GYM AT ALL

I wonder how could I didn’t succeed in speaking to account manager after a week’s attempt. Every time who picked up the calls said they will leave a message and Chelsea will call back but there was not even a single time I succeeded in talking to her, and it’s simply about that I want to use my gift cards. PLEASE improve the service that we are paying so much money for.

I've been a member for 3 years. Most of the staff are friendly and professional but there are a handful of trainers that are super rude. Specifically the ones who don't like to share the gym with members not opting for personal training. Also they stand like in major walkways and the most annoying filming their social media content in the middle of the way like its their personal studio. All this is super off-putting and I think we pay too high a membership fee to deal with employees egos.

Secondly there's always something broken/ dirty the porters have tunnel vision and don't clean everything and they're kind of rude...especially in the locker room and showers.

Gonna try Barry’s again. ✌️

I’ve had an exceptional experience with Kimberly, one of the massage therapists at the spa. I see her weekly because she is the only practitioner able to release my muscle tension effectively. Kimberly’s skill and professionalism have earned my complete trust, and I always leave feeling rejuvenated and cared for. Highly recommend!

It’s a cool location, and the staff is absolutely great.

I hear the classes there are great. There are some great trainers (but also some with extremely poor gym etiquette).

If you come to a gym to use the gym, you’re better off using the 24hr fitness at 1/10 the price.

This review is for Kimberly Centinaje at the Equinox Spa.

I cannot rave enough about Kimberly!
Part relaxation, part physical therapy, you always feel 100% better after a session with her.
If you get regular massages, you know it can be tough to find the right therapist. Kimberly is IT.
She is the antidote to stress knots and tense muscles. I find sessions with her to be an investment in my health. I highly recommend Kimberly Centinaje for Body Work at the Equinox Spa.

I really love this gym. I think it has a lot of character. I love how they kept a lot of pre-existing architectural and design aspects that were part of the building when it was originally a theater.
The bathrooms seem clean. The workout facilities seem clean as well.
I’ve taken one Vinyasa yoga class, and the instructor was very helpful.

I had an appointment with Simon for a massage with cupping yesterday in the spa. It was a wonderful experience I would highly recommend.

I attended a class with a friend at Equinox on Union Street, specifically a yoga class at 7:15pm. The class was quite intense with loud music, resembling more of a cardio session. I engaged in conversation with my friend a couple of times as we navigated through the challenging exercises, as we're not accustomed to cardio classes. However, towards the end of the session, the instructor politely asked us to refrain from talking, which we understood. Unfortunately, another attendee, who appeared to target us for being Latinos and speaking Portuguese, rudely criticized us for being loud and disrupting her concentration, despite our sporadic conversations every 15 minutes. This incident left me feeling embarrassed and frustrated, especially since it seemed the instructor indirectly supported her behavior. It's disheartening to feel discriminated against based on language and nationality. I'm now hesitant to return to classes at Equinox, fearing further discrimination. Such behavior should not be tolerated, and I hope Equinox addresses this issue promptly. She was very rude, and target us by the fact that we were not speaking in English.

Equinox gyms are always reliable and clean. I love my all access pass. This location isn’t a great value because of the small size, but the amenities and trainers are amazing. Always made me look forward to working out. Private Pilates with John helped me achieve my health goals and kept me feeling great through 9 months of pregnancy, even with an old hip injury.

Very crowded and old rusty gym equipment. When I pay $300 per month, I don’t expect to wait up to 10 minutes every time I want to use a machine or bench. The only reason that I’m a member is because it’s the nearest gym to where I live.

The worst equinox location, I’ve ever been to. It’s the same as a blink fitness.
I reached out to the GM several times regarding the out of order machines, people constantly talking on their phones (FaceTiming in the women’s locker room) she has never responded. The staff is friendly, but it doesn’t make up for how crowded and somehow dejected this place is.

This location is not up to the standards I'm used to at other Equinox locations. The weight floors were packed...every bench was in use, I felt like I was competing for mirror space to check form, and folks were waiting for the cable machines. The women's locker room was a mess (is it normal for members to leave dirty towels on the benches and counters instead of putting them in the hampers?). The staff were friendly and the workspace downstairs is comfy and useful. I'll be giving the Pine Street location a try...

Best gym in San Francisco by far. I worked out at 24 hour fitness for years and finally stepped up to the better gym. Always friendly staff, impeccable cleanliness, people who are serious about fitness and staying in shape, state of the art equipment and facilities.

The other negative reviews on here seem inaccurate. However it does become crowded during peak hours, but that is the case with any popular gym.

I’ve heard rumors of Equinox starting to kick members off grandfathered plans. This happened to me here. Somehow my valid credit card that had been used for membership dues for the past 2 years supposedly didn’t work *once* and they failed to charge me. Instead of reaching out to me to resolve the issue or ask for alternate form of payment, they quickly cancelled my membership. When I noticed about a week later, explained, and asked to get back on my membership, they had a new rate for me that was almost $120 more expensive per month(!). Nope.

Wow. The place is really as bad as reviews say. It was my first time there and I wanted to check it out. Front desk people were rude and refused to give me a tour of the gym. I had to walk myself around and found that it was nothing special. I wanted to see if it was better than my usual fitness sf Fillmore gym and it’s really not. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming there and it’s a much nicer atmosphere and honestly there are a lot more machines and workout varieties.

I honestly prefer showering and using the facilities here over my own apartment! Daily steams have become a ritual and the Kiel’s can’t be beat.

The equipment is modern and continually updated, and the workout classes in particular are challenging and never too packed. I recently took a class by Kelsey Mead, and I’m still sore a week later. Can’t recommend her highly enough!

The price is high but the caliber of individuals you are meeting and spending time with can’t be beat in the city. It is money well spent.

was considering coming here until their mass advertising on youtube showing completely fit, sweaty, sexy folks working hard and looking fit. saying they have personal training for everyone. after my trial, i didn’t feel included. i felt like i didn’t fit in, like the gym was too full of beautiful people casually working out and schmoozing, just being seen.

five stars for amenities, but this gym seems much more suited for wealthy, beautiful, athletic people. i need a lore humble place to work on my fitness, not an ego-inflated hangout.

also lack of parking. fitness sf is way cheaper and has tons of parking and way less ego with the amenities. also no bull sign on policy with no contract or “dues”

Don't buy anything from their store - terrible customer experience, shady, and aren't willing to work with you at all. My gf is really small and tough with sizing but they told me just buy it, don't worry about sizing, bring it back and they'll figure it out.

Brought it back the next morning (too big) and they'd only take store credit 12 hours later. Their pants are all too big for my gf so there's nothing I can buy -- too bad enjoy this $110 credit you can't use now.

Take better care of your members that are customers! We pay enough for the membership to gut us on stuff like this..

This location just doesn't do it for me. They have the equipment oddly placed and cramped next to each other. It's hard to find your own space when it's busy. The locker rooms are dirtier than I'd expect and there's a camera placed at the entrance which you have to pass to go from lockers to showers ..so I wonder how much they see. The people that generally go there just stand around by the equipment snapping selfies in the mirror while you patiently wait for a turn on the machine they're not using. I hated going due to the atmosphere.

Beautiful new gym in place of a theatre, so it still has whimsical theatrical accents. Lots of AM and PM classes (spin / cardio / yoga / etc.) with tons of clean machines and a eucalyptus steam room! And of course Kiehls for Equinox products. It's expensive for a gym but it's a little piece of heaven in your day that makes it totally worthwhile.
