Although Filley Fit serves all ages, our primary focus is individuals 55+ who want to improve or maintain physical fitness and live a healthy lifestyle. Young or old, physical activity is a necessary component of any daily routine. I walked into my appointment injured from going to another gym. I left feeling almost all healed from my neck/shoulder injury. I may not even bother going to see the chiropractor. Derek really knew how the body works and how it can heal with the right instruction. Feeling so good!

It's not surprising to see all 5 star reviews for this trainer. I've been working with Derek for almost 6 months, and he has patiently helped me get back to health. His knowledge of the human body is excellent and his teaching skills are awesome. He models each step of an exercise and monitors your execution to make sure you get the most out of the exercises. He also varies the exercises over time, so each session stays interesting. I can truly see and feel a difference in my body and health since I started working with him twice a week. I highly recommend his services.

I'm so glad that I found Derek. For several years I've been spiraling down in fitness as my various sports injuries got worse and caused collateral damage every time I tried anything. Then my second ACL was ruptured completely and I had to have surgery. Enter Derek Filley. His physiology and nursing training enable him to help me work out in a way that helps and doesn't harm. He's encouraging and positive--coaches me to do more than I thought I could, all with a very sympathetic and encouraging stance. I wish I'd known about him 5 years ago! I look forward to working with him for many years to come.

In terms of logistics, it's so easy. He's on Clairemont right off the 805, with ample free parking. It's private, so if you are the sort who doesn't particularly enjoy working out in front of a whole gym, this is for you. Wholeheartedly recommend.

From someone who trains with Derek Filley, I can tell you that choosing him is a no-brainer. His experience and entrenched skill are apparent. Whether you want to weight train or focus on a strong core foundation that improves posture and body support (which are the 2 reasons I train with him), he knows how to get you there at the right pace for you. He is a great person to have easy conversation with. His is a no judgment zone, and it is clear that he is in this for the sole purpose of helping you feel better in your body. This is 1-on-1 training at its best.

Derek is a terrific fitness coach. My wife and I hired him for the month we were visiting San Diego and then continued working with him online. He listens incredibly well and responds with thoughtful workouts customized to your personal goals, existing fitness level, and physical quirks. As middle aged folks, we were both grateful to start feeling stronger, trimmer, and better balanced within the first couple of weeks — and even more so now after several years. This review is after about two and a half years of working with Derek as a personal trainer. To give some context, I’m a female in my mid-50s with a desk job, and I have Multiple Sclerosis which affects my balance, coordination, and endurance.

I started with Filley Fit with a goal to improve strength and get more active. Derek has a strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, body mechanics, and fitness. He brings this knowledge, along with sensitivity to individual challenges, to customizing fitness sessions that help me meet those goals. Another huge thing: he did research about MS within the context of fitness. At the start of each session, he checks-in with me about my symptoms, and adjusts the session accordingly, while still keeping it a workout. Derek has provided a fitness approach that exceeds my expectations, plus it is a pleasure to meet up each week. Highly recommend!

I started training with Derek during the pandemic, and it was one of the best decisions I made at that time. Derek is extremely knowledgeable about anatomy and muscle groups, and the ways in which certain exercises can help mitigate pain or improve mobility - especially after injury. I had a lingering shoulder injury that limited by mobility for that joint, and after a few months of targeted exercises, I was back at equivalent capabilities on both sides. Derek also helped me reduce the frequency with which I needed to go to the chiropractor, because we figured out that I had overdeveloped quads and underdeveloped hamstrings, which was leading me to throw out my low back pretty regularly. I rarely have that issue anymore.

I also trained with Derek throughout my pregnancy, which I think really helped to make my pregnancy easier than a lot of my friends'. It wasn't his core competency at the time, but he did additional research to make sure exercises we were doing were safe, while also keeping me strong in the areas I most needed it to ensure I would feel the most comfortable throughout (hello core strength building without doing crunches...) In general, Derek seems to really take to heart his clients' interests and lifestyles and encompasses that into their individual training program.

While our personal training relationship ended because my family and I moved far away, I still schedule virtual sessions with Derek intermittently, if I get an injury from training on my own that I can't seem to shake. It always helps.

I can't recommend him highly enough. If you're looking for a trainer who will be kind and won't be a drill sergeant, but will keep you motivated and engaged, look no further.

Derek is fantastic! He really knows his stuff.
I've worked out with him for a number of years now. I first started when I had an injured knee that had been an ongoing issue for a number of years. I really wanted to get back into running but my knee prevented me from doing so. I work with Derek and overtime I was able to get stronger and more confident in my abilities and eventually was able to feel like my old self again.
I've recently had some prolonged shoulder injury issues and needed Derek's services again. I could not recommend more! I have had plantar fasciitis for ten years and I tried the drs, Rolfing massages, acupuncture, stretching, soaking, night socks. You name it I tried it. I just got used to walking with so pain, but I slowly stopped doing things I loved like walking my dog or dancing or going out for a night because it just wasn’t worth the pain.
30m min… it only took Derek 30 min to give me a relief from pain that I had not felt in years!! Now I can even RUN!!
I would say that it is 100% worth it!!

After struggling with tennis elbow for several months and several interventions, I was able to meet with and work with Derek. Working with Derek is one of the best decisions I've ever made, and my only regret is not finding him sooner.
