Fitness SF Castro isn’t just a gym—it’s a neighborhood living room with weights. The showers and locker rooms? Freshly renovated and fabulous. The facility? Always spotless. But the real magic is the vibe: members who respect each other, trainers who greet you with a smile, and a community that makes you feel like you belong.

And I couldn’t help but wonder… maybe the best workouts aren’t just about breaking a sweat, but about finding where you fit.

Best gym I've ever been to--and I've been going here steadily since around 2005 when, I think, it was still Gold's. Fitness SF Castro, however, is fantastic. It just keeps getting better and better. The equipment is cared for, replaced when old, and this is unquestionably the cleanest gym I've ever worked out at. Excellent cleaning staff and super friendly, helpful front desk staff. I've had four trainers off and on since I've been here and all were excellent. My current trainer, Matt, is terrific. They even let me bring my dog and give him treats. Highly recommended.

Love this location! Feels like a community here with friendly staff and fellow members. Cole at the front desk was super helpful with workout tips.

I’m really glad about the recent improvements and remodeling that the location has implemented. Solid gym spot.

I just want to put in a good word for Ruben, a personal trainer at Fitness SF in Castro. I am in my 50s and felt like my general health was not great after COVID: running out of breath walking up the hill, fatigued, gaining wait, low spirits. Having an intense office career did not help either. I started working with Ruben approximately 3 years ago and it has been a very positive and productive experience: my spirits are up, my exercise tolerance and strength have improved, and I feel so much better overall. Ruben has a very solid knowledge of human physiology and psychology combined with a varied trainer’s experience. This solid background allows him to develop a personalized and comprehensive program that fits my needs and personality. This is the most important part for me as I trust his judgment and I know that he understands my goals, body and personality. Ruben has a positive non-pretentious personality which makes it easy to communicate and work together if adjustments need to be made to a program. Overall, he is a serious dedicated professional and is a reliable and trustworthy partner. I highly recommend Ruben not just as a personal trainer but also as a coach for other trainers who may need additional guidance on how to build a personalized training program and an advice on how to best deal with a broad variety of clients and their expectations. 👍👍

I got an injury that my doctor said would take 6+ months to heal before I could use the gym again. I tell the gym this and want to cancel and they still double billed me for the last month. Talk about DESPERATE.

A gym in the Castro like the gays who go there is based on reputation and yours just tanked. I’d give negative stars to claw them from other laughable reviews if I could. I’m sorry my injury didn’t time itself to give you 5 days notice before the end of July lmfao.

Fitness SF Castro has a lot going for it—good energy, solid community, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. But the facility upkeep is frustrating. The spin bikes are almost always broken, and the showers have been under construction for what feels like forever. It’s hard to justify the price when basic amenities aren’t maintained. The team deserves better tools, and so do the members.

Source: Google

★ 3

For the significant number of people who come here, they need to increase focus on maintenance. Squeaky treadmills, batteries dead on set counters, and the showers have been under construction for months.

I really like fitness sf, but this location really needs some attention.

Lastly, while I appreciated the help, I feel they were dishonest about trainer pricing. They have several different tiers and don’t really give you the full pricing for each level of trainer (I didn’t even know they had different tiers until after I’d purchased and they tried to upsell me).

Had a nice stretch area and all the equipment you need. I noticed there was a steam room in the women’s room that wasn’t working, and front desk said there are no plans to get it working again, which is why I’m giving 3 stars. I really enjoy the steam room in another location- for relaxing after lifting and also helps with sinuses so I wish they would get it operational!

This gym is busiest from 4-7pm on weekdays. So why are they moving around all the leg day equipment interrupting workouts? Why is the only sink in the men’s bathroom closed now instead of overnight or a weekend? Why is all this work starting at 4pm on a weekday.

I know they’re trying to improve. But please. Improve when it’s not this gyms busy hours. It’s packed as is.

A great gym in the heart of the Castro. Fitness SF takes a careful eye to optimizing its space and keeping the equipment functional and updated.
It's a rare occasion that I need to wait to use equipment and I go around 11 am on my workout days. Their personal trainers are stellar with Nelson Otero standing out as the best, though my opinion is biased since he's currently my PT lol.
Oh and there's plenty of eye candy to act as inspiration for your own fitness journey :)

Gym is clean and in good condition. It is consistently crowded. I go off peak time intentionally and still have to wait for equipment and space. Staff is friendly.

This location has a great variety of equipment. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. It is a very popular location, as it is frequently busy, you need to be flexible with your workout routine. However, it is not maintained very well.

They don't seem to do preventative maintenance on the cardio machines, and wait for them to fail before they fix them to work properly. Some of the TV's don't have closed caption.

The upstairs bathrooms are sad. The toilets don't flush well and the plumbing leaks. Ventilation is poor. The urinal that was broken for 2 months still doesn't flush well.

The men's showers are cold and drafty because they have not fixed the broken door after a couple of months. With the door removed everyone that uses the bathroom can look in and watch members showering which is sort of creepy. One of the grab bars in the shower rusted off and hasn't been replaced--there are now just some rusty screws sticking out. The accessible handheld shower hasn't worked in years. One of the shower valves broke a few weeks ago and still hasn't been replaced.

The other locations are well kept and have more amenities. It's too bad that the Castro location can't even maintain the basic gym amenities.

Equipments are Ok, a lot of natural light on the
upper floor but be ready for the ghouls.
They haunt the lockers and the showers, pretend to exercise but actually just show up to creep up on the decent looking guys, and never give up no matter how many rejections they get.
That’s the only FSF location like this, it’s not a secret but management does nothing to kick the creeps out

I had a membership with this place for years, and would go on average about once a week. The price is decent and location is good if you live in the Castro, and the cardio equipment is decent though also often broken or wobbly. The weights are ok but you often have to wait for them.

Ultimately I cancelled my membership because of rude service. Their app and website is often buggy. They require you to use a QR code to log in. In a particular instance, the process to get a QR code wouldn't work (Since the app is buggy and spammy, I would use the QR code on the website to get a login. That stopped working. I went to log into the app. Had to use the password reset flow. Password reset email came but it just led me to an empty page, so I couldn't actually log in). I asked them to simply sign me in because they had my photo on file, and they wouldn't. To be honest the guy at the front desk looked bothered I was asking anything of him. Member services also refused to help, as did someone who was identified as a manager.

If you check out their Yelp reviews you'll see several complaints about rude service at the Castro location, and you'll see kind of smug responses to complaints about how crowded it is, "well we understand our location is popular"..

Guess you don't care if you lose customers.

Edit: despite the response below, I already complained on their website and didn't hear back.

DO NOT SIGN UP FOR FITNESS SF:
Extremely deceptive business practices. Large unaffordable charges to my account without my knowledge. Refusal to refund it, and threatened to send debt collectors after me if I opened a chargeback case.

Made me pay multiple months ahead due to policies that weren't even on the contract and I'm down so much money from this disaster.

I will be filing a case with the federal trade commission for fraudulent business practices.

Whatever you do, do not sign up for Fitness SF. They do not care about customers and will try and get as much money out of you as possible. Even the vice president literally made threats to me when I requested a refund.

This gym is ok, but it could be great! As a member, I keep getting emails about all the renovations to the Fillmore location… when will the Castro location get renovations? I recently joined SF Fitness, and I must say that it has been an incredible experience. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed by the friendly staff who genuinely care about their members’ fitness goals.

The gym itself is spacious and well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, offering a wide range of workout options to cater to different fitness levels and preferences. Whether you’re into weightlifting, cardio, or group classes, SF Fitness Gym has got you covered. They have an extensive selection of modern equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, weight machines, free weights, and more.

What sets SF Fitness Gym apart is its dedicated and knowledgeable team of trainers. They are always available to provide guidance, support, and personalized workout plans tailored to your specific needs. Their expertise has been instrumental in helping me achieve my fitness goals and pushing me beyond my limits.

Hygiene and cleanliness are top priorities at SF Fitness Gym. The facility is spotless, and there are abundant sanitizing stations throughout the gym. The staff ensures that all equipment is regularly cleaned and maintained, which gives me peace of mind during these times.

Another aspect that impressed me was the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere of the gym. It’s refreshing to see a diverse community of fitness enthusiasts who motivate and inspire one another. The positive energy and camaraderie among members create a motivating environment to pursue your fitness journey.

SF Fitness Gym also offers a variety of classes led by experienced instructors. From yoga and Pilates to HIIT and boxing, there’s something for everyone. These classes are an excellent way to mix up your routine, challenge yourself, and make new friends who share similar interests.

The gym’s location in Castro is convenient, with easy access to public transportation and ample parking options nearby. The flexible membership options and competitive pricing make it accessible to individuals with different budgets.

In summary, SF Fitness Gym in Castro is a gem for fitness enthusiasts. With its top-notch facilities, knowledgeable trainers, inclusive community, and commitment to cleanliness, it provides an exceptional fitness experience. I highly recommend SF Fitness Gym to anyone looking for a motivating and results-driven gym in the Castro area.

Just an all around terrible gym. I can deal with the old equipment and creepy showers with no privacy, but the real issue is how absurdly packed this gym is at all times. They have five squat racks for a gym that regularly has 100s of people in it.

It doesn’t even seem to matter when you go. The only difference between 6pm and going at 11am is whether you wait 10 minutes or 30 for a squat rack. Plenty of other gyms in the neighborhood, so I will be canceling my subscription.

Just. So. Crowded.

I was a member for 4 months and honestly don’t think there isn’t a time when it’s enjoyably crowded. They’ve just far oversold memberships for the capacity they have. Rarely can you get a bench without waiting in line or get the free weights you need without waiting.

They could improve the crowding by reducing the range of equipment and adding extras of the stuff 90% of people use.

This Castro gym is neglected at the expense of other locations. I guess the gays will be loyal no matter what. Its packed with people on their phones hogging equipment. Equipment that is broken takes longer to fix, and the hot water in the mens shower has been broken for weeks, but there is never a notice or an apology for inconvenience. No idea when it will be fixed. They raise the price 3x since I joined and I am thinking I've had enough. (I wont get into the creepy people in the men's shower, a large communal room, but the management turn a blind eye to that).

I am giving Fitness SF Castro 5 stars because the front desk staff, the managing staff, and the cleaning staff are amazing. This is my neighborhood gym and have consistently felt safe and able to be myself in this gym.

I unfortunately have an issue with how aggressively I was approached by a trainer the last Tuesday, February 21 around 7-8PM. Elias J saw me snap a picture while on the gym floor and felt it was his job to threaten expelling me from the gym, call the police to have me arrested, and to go to the front desk staff to start a group conversation about the situation.

To be clear, there are no rules at this gym about taking photos or videos of any kind on the gym floor beyond stating that video or imagery in the locker rooms is prohibited. Beyond harassing me he left his client unattended, wasting his clients money for that session. He had a calm veneer the entire confrontation, but his words were very specific about excluding me from the my safe place at this gym and that "they'd" be watching me from now on.

I have been uncomfortable going to Castro location since this interaction, in fear I will targeted again.

FOR SAN FRANCISCO RESIDENTS ONLY! I live in the East Bay and spend a fair amount of time in the city. My friend is a member and wanted to work out together. I filled out the online form for a free trial pass and it stated that you must be local. Well, their definition of local means inside the city limits only. I was told the only way I could join my friend was to pay the day rate of $25. The front desk associate basically accused me of trying to steal from SF Fitness and also failed to mention that the gym was closing in 90 minutes for their Christmas Party (this was Saturday, 12/3). I paid for the day rate and the gym was fine for what/where it is. I would've potentially become a paying member to continue going with my friend, but the overall experience left a bad taste in my mouth. As a member of another gym chain with locations in the city, I would be happier to invite my friend to join me at one of their locations after the rude treatment from this SF Fitness.

Fitness SF Castro's best two attributes are location and two level facility that should be serving the needs of its members.

Atmosphere
- > We join a gym to help us get motivated and energetic while we try to reach our health goals. Every time we visit the gym (morning, day or evening) - its like entering a sad mall. The gym plays low music which contributes to the LDE vibe.

- > The staff are unengaged and spend the majority of their time on their phones or computers. They also contribute to the passive atmosphere - no hellos or goodbyes but spend their time looking at sad dogs tied up to tables.

Quality
- > The showers, sauna and bathrooms have rusted nails which is a health hazard.

Value
- > With $100 / mo + memberships, we deserve better from management at Fitness SF Castro. It is time for new management to take control of this gym

Loving the recent remodel of the multi-purpose room upstairs! The removal of the wall dividing the room and the rest of the gym has made it feel less congested and allowed for more light to flow into the gym.

They also have a quick and simple app for contactless check-in. I have been going to the gym since pre-pandemic and I can personally say the Fitness SF app has made a lot of progress. Previously the app would log you out sporadically, but the new app doesn’t have this issue! In particular, Sean was extremely helpful instructing me on how to transition to the new app.

Does the job. Pretty reasonable prices and courteous staff. Spacious with lots of equipment. Can get a bit busy in the late afternoon. Shower is not private. Other than that it's a decent gym.

Great facility so far but the welcoming committee behind the front desk has been just a bundle of joy. My husband was scanning his QR code in as another patron walked in the door. Said patron rudely told my husband something to the extent of “pardon me I need to get through.” The front desk associate signaled my husband to move out of the way even though he was there first and was literally in the process of scanning his QR. I found the associate to be disrespectful and potentially undeserving of my membership fee if something like that happens again.

If you are thinking of joining a gym in the Bay Area, DO NOT join Fitness SF. They have instituted a policy forcing all new and current members to install an app in order to enter the gym. Go to your app store and review the permissions and reviews for the "Fitness SF" App. Take a look at the location permissions. Now ask yourself what purpose it might serve that every time you open the app Fitness SF, logs your location, likely stored in the cloud in an open S3 bucket, together with all your personally identifiable information. And if your wondering if that's likely, ask yourelf how likely it is that Fitness SF is hiring Infosec professionals to lock down that data, here in the Bay Area where billion dollar software companies are having a hard time competing for that talent.

If you have any doubts about whether they have instituted this policy call them before you show up to sign up.
Fitness SF will argue that you always have the option to go to the web site, log in and get a QR code, but let's face it, do you really want to log in to a web site and get a QR code every time you go to the gym, or do you want that experience to be as friction free as possible.

If you are a member of this gym, check the permissions on the app. If you are disturbed by what you see, and at being strong armed into installing the app, and having your location shared, voice your opinion loudly. Write a review here and on Yelp, until you are given a choice.

If you are in any doubt about the strong arm tactics being employed, try show up to the gym and say you want so sign in manually, and no longer use the app. See what happens.

It might not be the newest shiniest thing in the small chain of gyms, but the Castro location is solid, and whenever I do go instead of my normal midmarket or soma locations I’m actually quite impressed with the cleanliness and the range of modern equipment. The one area that needs improvement is the showers. Other than one showerhead that was recently replaced they basically put out air and it takes longer and more water to shower than if they were at normal pressure. Also the shower room does not seem to have any working ventilation anymore. That last aspect really needs attention or there will be mold and a whole range of problems. The shower room steams up with even just two people showering. Please fix and it will really enhance the gym experience. 😀

Recently changed the COVID guidelines and no longer need a reservation—still have to scan the barcode in their app which is easy enough.

Also had validated parking lot which you might not expect or get with other gyms in that area.

Update 6/2019: SF Fitness canceled my beloved Tuesday evening yoga class for unclear, seemingly dubious reasons. Many members emailed and called the management to complain, but our complaints were not heard and we all got a cut & paste email response. Cancelled my membership due to poor management decisions.

Also, the worst of all insults, they have horrible shower heads in the men's locker room. It takes like 5 minutes to wash the soap off your body. Take that SF Fitness!

My recommendation -- try Barry's Bootcamp across the street.

Original Review 2017: Love this place. What makes it so special is the community of people who go there and work behind the desk. I go here every Tuesday evening for Yoga because the teacher, Arthur, is amazing and better than any yoga teacher I've ever learned from at Yoga Tree or any other fancy yoga center, and the people who attend his class are very dedicated and friendly. My only suggestion to Fitness SF Castro is that the showers are in sore need of renovation. The drains don't drain, and the sauna room from a bygone era of the Castro looks creepily abandoned.

The membership advisor didn’t really understand what I wanted or need from a gym. Trying to switch from Crunch to FitnessSF but need a better membership advisor to see the value.

I’ve worked out here for several years. Good equipment diversity and lots of space in the changing rooms. Towel service was awesome upgrade a while back. Cons - front desk staff are often detached and disinterested in helping, and the gym can be insanely packed at peak times. Though I know some friends like it when it’s super busy ☺️

Small place, generally clean. Usually crowded, some cross fit folks that use 4 different weight sets and flail around in the aisles as they run from machine to machine. Fun to watch from a distance, not so great if you're in the middle of the zone. Small locker room, small showers.

I didn't feel like driving to my regular fitness SF off market so I thought I would go to the Castro location. I came at the wrong time as the place was packed and it just felt claustrophobic. I couldnt even find a locker to use so I ended up just turning around and going home. Too many people at the peak time and it just wasn't a comfortable environment. Not really the best review of the gym as I didn't even get to use it.

The staff here are great to assist in any shape or form. Signing up was no hassle and even a great discount to add. One thing I will say that gives this place 5 Stars is the cleanliness. I’m sure some will talk about the equipment. But does it do what it’s intended to do? Does for me. Thanks team!
