EDIT 2: This gym has gotten somehow gotten even worse since my last updated review. How they can charge over 120 a month for basically an apartment gym is criminal. And the lack of competition in SF assures they can do this. It’s gotten truly horrific in recent months.

EDIT: It’s crazy how quickly this gym went downhill in just one year since the major renovation, and became more similar to other Fitness SF locations. It’s overrun by the same entitled techies that have ruined the vibe at every gym in the city.

So many will take your equipment right in front of you and then deliberately try to antagonize you and escalate the situation. They’ll leave benches absolutely drenched in their sweat. It’s like a high school boys gym. What a shame.

That being said, the staff are super nice and it’s very nice to sandwich the nonsense going on in the weight room with their good vibes at the start and end of my workout.

OLD: This is the only fitness SF location, and probably one of the few gyms in the entire city that is worth it. It’s a little on the smaller side, but the high quality makes up for that and then some.

The equipment is very well organized. Everything is always so clean and well maintained.

Most importantly for me, the members are for the most part chill and respectful of others, in stark contrast to the toxic ego lifters, creeps, and entitled bros at the SOMA, Castro, and Transbay locations, respectively.

I've been a Fitness SF member since 2013 and have been coming to the Mid Market gym since it opened. I'm so grateful for the incredible instructors here, including Howard (yoga), Maricela (Zumba), and Paul (cardio combat), who over the years have really made a profound impact on my health and life. Their classes are challenging and fun and they are such sweet, caring people.

This may be my favorite of the FitnessSF locations. The staff are all nice, they keep the gym clean, and it's the right size to be easy to get around while having everything you need.

I especially love the group fitness offerings. Faycal's HIIT classes on Mondays and Fridays are the best - high energy from beginning to end, constantly moving but with lots of options to adjust to your level, great sweat with a great group of people! Faycal does a great job of checking in with people and keeping everyone motivated to push through. I also love Danimal's power vinyasa yoga on Tuesdays which is both challenging and restorative.

Nice facilities, but inconsistent policies depending on the staff member, no flexibility, and weird upsells. I've learned that I was misled when I signed the contract so I'm trying to get it cancelled and refunded so I can go to another gym, but they've been unresponsive.

I had a medical challenge that left me sedentary for months and vetted local gyms with personal training to help me achieve my baseline fitness level and beyond. I'm happy with my decision to go with FitnessSF because of the equipment, cleanliness, accessibility and friendly staff. I was recommended Steven Luibrand for personal training and I'm already seeing results after two months! He's put together a compressive program tailored to my goals and needs. It's clear he's a wealth of knowledge since I've learned SO MUCH. Thank you Steven!

I've been going to Fitness SF since February 2022 and worked first with Adele, and then since April 2024 with Leon as my personal trainer, doing sessions about 2-3x a week. I've been really enjoying working together with Leon. They are very knowledgeable in creating my workout plan in terms of exercises and set and rep schedules that suit my goals (muscle maintenance and fat loss). They know a lot about the body/movement and the right form for exercises. When I have (minor) pain somewhere in my body in the past they easily adapt my exercises for that day and the planning of the next few weeks if necessary. Leon is a strong advocate for promoting a healthy lifestyle inside and outside of the gym and has also been able to get me to do cardio after our sessions consistently!

I worked with Steven Luibrand as my training coach for several years, and from the very beginning I was impressed by his thoughtful approach. When I was deciding whether to train with him, I asked for an explanation of his approach and right away it was clear that he cares about meeting each client exactly where they are.

Over the years I had several setbacks from old injuries my body had long compensated for, but Steven continuously adjusted my program, sometimes week by week, so I could keep moving forward. Because of his support, I became the strongest I’ve ever been and accomplished things I never thought I’d do—pull-ups, deadlifts, sets of push-ups, even pistol squats on a balancing ball! I even ran my first marathon in the last month before I turned 40!

Steven approaches training as a discovery process, recognizing that bodies and minds are dynamic. With his deep knowledge of technique and kinesiology, combined with compassion and generosity, he makes it possible for clients to grow stronger and feel supported. Thank you, Steven!

I’ve been attending Faycal El Aryf’s HIIT classes at Fitness SF Mid-Market on Mondays and Fridays, and I have to say he’s truly exceptional. Faycal brings a ton of energy and motivation to every session, pushing us through challenging workouts while always keeping the atmosphere positive and encouraging. If you’re looking to level up your fitness routine, I definitely recommend taking his class. It’s been a fantastic experience, and Faycal’s dedication really shows in how he coaches each of us. Definitely a five-star trainer!

I absolutely love taking HIIT classes with Faycal El aryf! They're incredibly dynamic, energetic, and always bring such a positive vibe to every session. The workouts are challenging in the best way—you definitely feel like you've put in the work—but they’re also super fun. What I really appreciate is that every class is different, so it never feels repetitive or boring. Highly recommend if you're looking for an engaging, effective workout with an instructor who truly keeps you motivated!

I’ve been a member for 5 years, including through the pandemic and I’ve never considered other gyms. The monthly fee is really good value for the facilities, variety of studio classes and excellent personal trainers. Steven Luibrand is top notch: we’ve worked on building strength, maintaining mobility, snowboard-specific training, and throw in random fun stuff like earthquake bar lifts, obstacle course warm-ups. Great gym, great staff, great vibes.

One year update on my training with Steven Luibrand at Fitness SF - the progress has been incredible!

The calisthenics foundation Steven built with me has paid off beyond what I imagined. I'm now tackling advanced progressions that seemed impossible two and a half years ago. What really stands out is how Steven continues to adapt our training, introducing new challenges at exactly the right moments.

The sustainability I praised in my 2024 review has proven to be Steven's secret weapon. While other gym-goers cycle through intense phases and burnout, my progress has been steady and maintainable. I'm still running and doing yoga, but now with strength and stability I never had before.

Steven's ability to see potential in his clients that they don't see in themselves continues to amaze me. His programming is intelligent, his form corrections are spot-on, and his encouragement is perfectly calibrated.

If you're considering personal training at Fitness SF, Steven Luibrand is the choice. Two and a half years in, and I'm still excited for every session.

Highly recommend!

I attended group classes at the Mid market location and I absolutely loved them. Colleen’s Bodypump, Bootcamp and Core classes had amazing energy and I was able to make great progress in building endurance and muscle tone. Her choice of music energizes, her words motivate and her reps keep you engaged to consistently push and be the best version of yourself. Her enthusiasm and energy is absolutely contagious and makes the toughest sets feel achievable.

I also attended Benjie’s Bodypump classes where he brings incredible technical expertise and precise form corrections. His instructions ensured I got maximum benefit from the sets while his attention to detail makes every rep count.

Jaretta’s Dance Fit used to be the fun, high-energy class that never felt like traditional exercise. I’d say it is a great cardio workout disguised as pure entertainment. She breaks down moves clearly and creates an inclusive, judgment-free environment. I always left the class sweaty, smiling, and already planning my return.

Feycal’s HIIT classes comprised of varied exercises that always kept things interesting. He made sure to help everyone push their cardiovascular limits and show serious results in a short time. He is really friendly and helps correct form postures while creating classes at different intensity levels.

Do not come to this gym! For one, the employees are rude as hell unless you’re white or Asian. It’s overpriced and they will constantly try to sell you things and make it impossible to get a refund or cancellation. I did a “free personal training” event offered on their website. What they don’t tell you is that someone will lead you back into their office afterward to “discuss payment options” and sign you up for an extremely expensive package service. When I asked for a refund when moving out of town, they ignored me for a while, then said the refund would have been possible earlier (it was purchased in the last 4 weeks) but now it’s impossible, and were genuinely unhelpful. I did not feel like this gym was welcoming to Black folks at all. Spend your money elsewhere!

And fitnessSF don’t you dare write some half thought out comment about how you care because you clearly don’t and I won’t read it.

Been loving going to this chain of gyms for years now. What is Claire is their continual effort to constantly improve, which includes maintaining equipment as well as always having fresh new offerings for members.

Training with Steven Luibrand has been solid as well. We push the envelope and I feel like I am constantly becoming a better performance athlete, while still maintaining being a bodybuilder. Goals get set, deliverables, get established, and we push for them. Couldn’t be any more happier with the progress.

I noticed that the evening yoga class was canceled without any notification through the app. Just as I received updates about the hot water issue via notifications and emails, it would be really helpful if cancellations were communicated in the same way. Since the classes are first come, first serve, and people may drive up to 20 minutes to attend, it’s important to keep everyone informed in advance.

I joined the gym and was with this location almost two years. I had good praise with this facility. However, not so much with the people running the show there.

I joined this location at the end of 2022. I needed a trainer to work with me. I was assigned to Miguel who was wonderful for the first year, and I was told that he was the only one who worked on Saturdays, as told by the manager Annabelle. Turned out this was not true at all.

In year 2, everything went south, uneventful.

I suffered from a very bad allergy in the spring 2024. I had to cancel my sessions. When I felt better, I tried to contact Miguel to discuss the remaining "unused" sessions. No response from him what so ever. In fact I literally played phone tag with Miguel since 2022, each time when needed to reschedule sessions. It meant I could not confirm my own schedule because I only received text from Miguel the day before the appointment most of the time.

With the frustrating experience to deal with Miguel this year, I went to the Filmore location and found a new trainer. Surprisingly I was offered an online appointment booking url right away, and of course including the new trainer's availability on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) In fact a few other trainers work on weekends as well. These were not offered to me in the Mid Market location since day one.

The bad experience this year made me cringe with this location. Since the membership allows one to visit every location in the city, I certainly will recommend neighbours and friends to skip these people altogether.

Favorite gym I've been to in a long long time. The women's locker room is always spotless, I have never had issues getting on equipment, and the staff is incredibly friendly. Ryan, one of the trainers who often greets you at the front desk, is one of the nicest people. He greets me by name before I even scan in, and I've only been coming here for two months. Terrible membership packaging. Almost like it’s intentionally designed to be against you. Asked for a 1 month membership and got 2 months because there’s a “last month fee”? For the price of it, it’s not justifiable especially if you go after work when it’s a zoo to get any equipment you want. Overpriced for what you’re getting. I have been to a gym before and this is not how you structure a membership. It’s shady.

Fitness SF is the best choice you can make when it comes to picking the right gym in San Francisco. Not only do they provide many different types of machines and equipment with modern bathrooms/locker rooms, but also is their staff very welcoming and supportive!
Luckily, I've had the chance to work with Steven for a couple of training session. What made my experience a very special one is Steven's expertise in the field of building strength and conditioning. Moreover, he always motivated me to push further to always give 100%.
Another reason why I would highly recommend Steven is that he's always very fun and makes you smile. That's one of the most important quality a fitness coach's got to have, in my opinion.

FitnessSF is great. I especially love this location. I've been training with Steven for about three months now, and have seen improvements in my strength and differences in my physique. He is perhaps the most impressive trainer I've ever worked with. Though he has a minimalist for my program, I have experienced maximum results. Steven is not only an expert at fitness, but he is extensively knowledgeable about nutrition as well. He ensures that I am meeting my nutritional needs for optimum sessions. We also have a fun time when we train by bantering and joking during the workout. His jokes are also pretty funny. Steven specializes in calisthenics and gymnastics strength training, and so I've learned exciting new moves that go are a change from the machines and free-weights. I highly recommend Steven!

I joined Fitness SF a year ago, and I must say my experience has been nothing short of amazing, largely due to the wonderful assistance I received from Crystal. From the moment I stepped into the gym, I was impressed with the welcoming atmosphere and the state-of-the-art facilities.

Crystal was instrumental in making my membership process smooth and hassle-free. She was incredibly knowledgeable, answering all my questions with patience and clarity. Her professionalism and friendly demeanor made me feel right at home.

The gym itself is fantastic, boasting a wide range of equipment that caters to all fitness levels. It's clean, well-maintained, and has a vibrant community vibe that makes working out a pleasure rather than a chore.

But what really sets Fitness SF apart for me is the exceptional customer service, exemplified by Crystal. She periodically checks in to ensure that my gym experience is going well and that my membership benefits are fully utilized. It's this level of personal attention and care that makes Fitness SF more than just a gym - it's a community where you feel supported in your fitness journey.

Theres so much to say about this Fitness SF location!

First: the people here that work here are absolutely A++. Crystal Bree, the assistant general manager is the absolute best! The gym itself is clean and pretty well equipped. Pleasant staff. Good amount of cardio equipment. Open turf area and another for sleds. Class rooms, etc. I would like to see some additions like an incline barbell bench, belt squat, standing calf, etc. But they do a good enough job with the space they have.

My one big complaint: If you're a fan of gym etiquette and organization, this place might drive you a little mad. In my experience reracking is pretty much non-existent and what is racked is wildly misplaced. This is partly the fault of the gym as they only have one plate tree that I'm aware of to supplement the integrated equipment racks. But that's no excuse for being lazy and inconsiderate to those using the equipment after you. I also haven't seen any cleanup or enforcement from staff.

Set me up on a training regiment to achieve my goals(weight loss) and was really good about adjusting my training based on how I was performing, my areas of weakness/strength, and also just keeping things fun and interesting. Been training with Josh for about 2 years now and still feel I'm getting a lot from it and the gym.

This is my favorite Fitness SF location in SF having been to five different locations in SF. The space is fantastic. It has a well designed layout with nice finishes, facilities, and equipment. The management and staff I've interacted with have been very friendly, supportive, and professional. I did my complimentary FIT session here with Antonio and he was awesome! I love the overall vibe here and feel very comfortable here as someone new to gym-based fitness and training.

The trainers and staff here are top notch. I came in after recovering from breaking my foot to try to regain strength and confidence in my own body. Crystal was able to help identify specific problem areas to match me with a trainer that could meet my needs and get me back to where I wanted to be. It’s been nearly 2 years now since then and I’m the strongest I’ve ever been with regularly hitting new PRs and finally broke 300 on my deadlifts.

I recently moved locations to what they call “mint hill” and was looking for a new gym membership. SF Fitness was walking distance from my house which I liked but after talking to Crystal at the front desk I was sold. She made the process smooth and easy. Walking me through a tour of the gym and answered any questions I had. To this day she is always willing to help explain the different programs and classes the gym offers and answer questions. I would definitely recommend… good gym but even better service!

This is the best gym in the area hands down.
The short version: This gym is spacious, clean and has everything you need and want from a gym - classes, cardio, weights etc. The real reason why you want to go here is the people. The average gym person that walks through the door is friendly, kind, and considerate and its all very intentionally driven by the staff.

Long version:
This gym is basically a fitness oasis. You get a bunch of natural sunlight from all the windows so you don't feel stuck inside a torture box. It's the kind of place that gets you pumped before you've even begun to scoop a bunch of pre-work out into your blender bottle. If you just need a space to pump and feel good, this is the place. The atmosphere is friendly and encouraging, with everyone focused on their own workout. High fives and fist bumps are readily exchanged, workout tips are shared freely, and there's a genuine sense of camaraderie. It's like everyone's on the same team, working towards their own personal best. Personally, I built a powerful positive feedback loop by making friends with everyone at the gym, including the staff, and like I said earlier: the reason you go to this gym is because the people here, specifically the staff, who are all amazing.

The staff here is the epitome of approachable expertise. The first person who will greet you with a big smile is Crystal, whose contagious energy and genuine kindness will immediately make you feel at ease but also excited to work out. Crystal is a chameleon at the gym, equally adept at guiding you through your initial sign up journey, putting even the most nervous gym newbie at ease with her easygoing charm. Underneath the hat and hoodie though, is a powerhouse of fitness knowledge and incredible athleticism.

The diversity and knowledge wielded by the rest of the trainers here is incredible. Each trainer here is an alchemists, transforming sweat into sculpted physiques and motivation into burning ambition. I was stuck at the same plateau for a while until I started training with Ryan. Now every other week or at least every month I hit a new pr.

I could write an even longer review here about the trainers, but at the expense of time, I'll leave you with this: trust Crystal. She'll hook you up with the right trainer that is right for you. Your body type, your goals, your vibe, your skills and abilities. And if you're one of those people who goes to the gym and thinks you don't need a personal trainer, you're either already an athlete with the physique of a greek god or you need to eat a slice of humble pie and learn from one of these professionals.

If you're stuck in the "decision" phase of your fitness journey and you're unsure about the commitment, signing up and cancelling is pretty easy. You pay for the first and last month of membership upfront. But maybe if you swing by, catch me by the squat racks, say hi and make some friends, you'll create that same positive feedback loop I made a year ago, and you'll discover the boundless physical feats you can forge with your body just by showing up everyday.

Really I would go here even if it wasn't nice because of the location. All this Fitness SF gyms that I've been to (here, Salesforce Transit center, and Oakland) are pretty swell.

Good gym equipments and environment. But they will trick you with membership cancellation/termination. They say you need to cancel 15 days before the next billing date, which is 1st of every month. I want December to be my last month so I cancelled mine on 12/8. But I have paid the last month twice: I prepaid last month when signing up; and I paid again on 12/1. They refused to refund me. They told me in email that I actually need to cancel before 11/15. That is 1.5 month before my last day. NOT 15 days as written on their website.

I recently re-joined Fitness SF at 110th St, San Francisco, and it has exceeded all my expectations! From the moment I walked through the doors, I knew I had found a gem in the city's heart.
The top-notch facility boasts a spacious and well-equipped workout area catering to all fitness levels. Whether you're a cardio enthusiast, a weightlifting pro, or someone just starting their fitness journey, Fitness SF has something for everyone. The variety of equipment is impressive, and everything is meticulously maintained, reflecting the commitment to providing a clean and welcoming environment.
What truly sets Fitness SF apart is the professional and friendly staff. The trainers are knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely invested in helping you achieve your fitness goals. They take the time to understand your needs and tailor workouts accordingly, creating a personalized experience that maximizes results.
The group fitness classes are a standout feature, offering diverse options to keep workouts engaging and fun. From high-energy spin classes to rejuvenating yoga sessions, there's always something to suit your mood and fitness preferences. The instructors are passionate and motivating, creating a positive, inclusive atmosphere that encourages everyone to push their limits.
The cleanliness of the facility is remarkable, with ample sanitizing stations and a staff dedicated to maintaining a hygienic environment. The management strongly emphasizes the well-being and comfort of its members.

Deceptive Business -- DO NOT USE
Treats customers like animals. Forced me to pay for things I didn't even use, tacked on huge hidden fees, and cited that the contract had the fees hidden behind a huge wall of text. The contract didn't have what they said, they still charged me without consent, and even charged cards I deleted.

I protested the fees, but the VP threatened to ruin my credit score and send debt collectors after me if I didn't pay the fees. My roommates ended up paying $270 for one week of membership and I paid $235 for only a few weeks as well.

Reported the company to the FTC, DFPI, and the Attorney General for deceptive business practices. Illegal to hide payment information deep inside a contract.

My short time at Fitness SF was filled with headaches, deceptive and negligent billing practices, and long waits. I now understand why none of my roommates and friends in the city are members of Fitness SF. The cost of the membership is nowhere near a concern compared to the actual management of this business. For my schedule and my health, Fitness SF was not a good fit for me despite its proximity, and I recommend that any prospective members reconsider signing up.

I first signed up at the Mid-Market location in January 2022. I had never considered personal training but was ultimately sold when the sales manager kept emphasizing the personalized and customizable nature of the training sessions. One thing to note is that new members must pay upfront first month’s dues as well as last month’s dues. If you plan on any changes to your membership, be it cancellation or freezes, you must notify the gym 15 days prior to the start of the next month. I purchased 4 personal training sessions for $500 and then chose my membership start date to be May.

I emailed the membership team to move my start date to June and they agreed. However, I was still charged by them for the month of May and was never informed of this until I checked my statement. When I reached out by email for a refund, I was instead offered a credit for another month in lieu of a refund for a charge that should not have occurred anyway. Finally, upon my insistence for a refund, they agreed to refund me.

This month, I had hoped to use up my personal training sessions. My goal was to master the correct form for a bunch of exercises I wanted to learn. When I came in for a complementary FIT session, I had a very clear idea of what I wanted my sessions to look like and which exercises I wanted to learn. The trainer assigned to me, enthusiastically agreed to my wishes and said she could conduct the sessions how I’d like them conducted.

However, when time came for my first two sessions, it was clear the sessions would not go how I wanted in almost any way. The training sessions, no matter which trainer you do them with, are very structured, as in 10 minutes for a warm-up, 40 minutes for the training, and 10 minutes for cooldown. Despite the exercises I wanted to learn, my trainer wanted to assign me a strict program with the number of reps and sets that she decided fit. In my first two sessions, I did not get to choose which exercises I wanted. In the middle of my second session, when I asked to do an exercise that we had agreed to the session before, she outright said no. I was confused because I was sold on the fact that I would have control of my own personalized session. When I mentioned to my trainer how she had agreed to how I wanted the sessions to go, she deflected and ultimately refused, suggesting I find a new trainer. I tried to get some clarity from one of the sales reps. I had to ask for confirmation if I was charged for January when I restarted my membership and was shocked to be told that I was charged despite being explicitly told otherwise.

I decided to throw away my last two sessions, as I could no longer stomach the business practices of this establishment. Looking back, for the flexibility and availability of equipment I was looking for, I regret choosing a small company in favor of bigger players like 24 Hour Fitness, which I have now chosen over Fitness SF because of how accommodating they where when I wanted to freeze my membership as well the ample equipment available to use during the times I went.

Didn't join the join and the review is purely a reflection on the customer service experience I had. Earlier this week, I tried going to the website to get a day pass for interested new members of the gym. The page wasn't loading properly so I decided to send the gym an email via their contact form. Two days later, I noticed I still hadn't received a reply, so I decided to walk to this gym location to try and get a first time day pass. Once I got there in the morning, the front desk person was a bit hesitant with me and told me because I hadn't filled out a form, I couldn't enjoy the gym until the membership team arrived at 9am. Unfortunately, I was looking to do a workout prior to my working hours, but he insisted that I couldn't enjoy the facilities. I asked if I could fill out the form right there at the front desk, and he told me no. Kind of weird to be so hesitant with someone clearly interested in potentially starting a membership. Anyways, it was a very off-putting experience and have been treated far better at literally all of the other gym I've visited her in SF. Sadly didn't feel welcomed and probably won't be coming back.

I’ve been a member for about a week and this gym is just ok. Yes, it’s clean and has a fresh look and feel, but it’s pretty lacking in a number of ways

Equipment: I was excited to see four power racks and platforms, with two additional squat racks, but as it turns out since they’re missing basics like an incline bench or seated overhead rack, these are really “versatile” stations. Good luck doing any exercises in that actually required this equipment.

Dumbbells only go to 100; most of the cable machines only go to 95.

Crowd: Seem nice enough, but is mostly clueless. Lots of “curls in the squat rack” types.
