Great gym lots of weights, good energy, can get busy around noon and 5 pm.Two challenges ,parking can be difficult at peak hours and people on their phones , more interested in their phones and sitting on machines instead of working out.
There should be an area away from the machines and weights where they can use their phones watch the movies and text. That would alleviate the frustration from those who just want to hit the weights get a workout in and go.

Large facility with several areas of free weights in addition to cable machines and selectorized weight machines.
Men's locker room is big and offers complimentary towels and grooming products.
This gym can get crowded, particularly from 5-8 AM and during the evening rush hour. Many of the members here seem to lack personal responsibility and courtesy to others. Some members don't re-rack their weights and other workout equipment. Cleanliness at this gym is also a continuing issue, with nasally soiled Kleenex left on cardio machines and other pieces of trash left everywhere on the floor.
Unfortunately, there are a small number of self-centered clients at this facility who behave as if they "own" certain pieces of equipment, like the guy who sits at the only "hammer" biceps machine every weekday from 5-5:30 AM and the woman who monopolizes 3 machines by herself because she "needs" to do her "supersets". When we approached the front desk staff about this, they told us that Fitness SF doesn't impose any time restrictions on use of equipment.

Still the best gym I've ever worked out in. And they've added a lot of value since my last review, like the free InBody and blood pressure macines, and adding more of the machines you usually had to wait for, like the pec decks. Great atmosphere too.

This gym recently sold the equipment that had the boxing bag, landmine, hanging bars, cables, trampoline/med balls and more, and I’m gutted. The trampoline with med balls is the biggest loss as it’s no longer at this location. Some of this equipment is still located throughout the gym, but the new equipment is mainly cables (thank god it has a landmine). Anyway, big miss selling that unique equipment. Otherwise a decent gym.

Best FITNESS SF branch hands down. They’ve been slowly upgrading areas - added a whole new set of dumbbells racks, replaced flooring, and added new machines throughout the year. It shows that they care about the needs of the fellow members here. My only feedback is to upgrade the locker rooms with new lockers ! ;)

in a era where customer service is a foreign concept and it's rare to actually talk to a human if you have an issue, I wanted to recognize Jonathan at Fitness SF Soma for helping me out today. Not only did he pick up the phone promptly and answer in a cheerful manner, he proceeded to solve my problem quickly and asked me if I needed anything else!!

Literally, he did this so quickly and with such ease that I was kind of in shock....and so I asked him if I could just speak to a manager because I wanted to tell somebody how nice it was to be treated so well....and he told me he was the manager!!!

So I hope whoever manages Jonathan and Fitness SF sees this! Thank you, Jonathan

This location has one of the better layouts of the locations I’ve tried. If I get out anything, it would be a dance studio room, a room with floors and soft wood floors :)

women’s locker room is nice and I absolutely love that there is a steam room and dry sauna. This is my reward at the end of the workout!

Max Rosenfeld is an Exceptional Trainer – Highly Recommend!

I’ve been training with Max Rosenfeld for over six years now, and I can honestly say he’s been a game-changer in my fitness journey. From the very first session, Max demonstrated an incredible ability to tailor workouts to my specific needs and goals. His deep knowledge of fitness, nutrition, and injury prevention has helped me achieve results I never thought possible.

Max is more than just a trainer – he’s a mentor and motivator who truly cares about my progress. He’s been with me through every challenge, celebrating my victories and helping me push past my limits. What stands out the most is his ability to make every session both challenging and enjoyable, always keeping things fresh and engaging.

If you’re looking for a trainer who is professional, passionate, and incredibly dedicated to your success, Max is your guy. I feel stronger, healthier, and more confident than ever, and that’s all thanks to his guidance over the years. Can't recommend him enough!

DO NOT USE THE TOWELS!!! Just moved to San Francisco I enjoy the gym but would always use my own personal gym towel. Until I saw they offered there own and that was a mistake I use my own now as I broke out using there due to them not following proper cleaning procedures. Bring your own towel and use your own towel so you do not catch anything from them not cleaning there towels.

I've been going here 2-3x/week for 1.5 years and am really happy with it. I go in the morning and can almost always get on the equipment that I want. In the evening, it's a different story, but it chills out after 7:30. If you're a decently attractive guy, you'll probably have some eyes on you and guys will come talk to you, but not to the same extent as the Castro location. It feels very safe and non-intimidating here, especially in the mornings and midday. Value for the price is good for SF - they have a lot of nice things like massage chairs, massage guns, grip dynamometer, towels, etc. If you're wondering if there's a piece of equipment, you can get an answer just by asking here in Google maps.
Last point: the morning front desk staff is awesome, so friendly! I am always happy to see them.

Updated review: down to three stars. This gym is now simply too crowded. I think fitness sf NEEDS to consider opening another location. After other gym closures during COVID the amount of people using this gym has really increased making it uncomfortable at times to work here. They have also consistently increased my membership fees - I've had a membership for 10 years and it has kept getting more and more expensive for the same gym. Otherwise: Lots of equipment, including new squat and deadlift racks. Nice showers with glass doors.

Nice gym, very large with a lot of different sections, weight and machines. I like the layout and that it is big. The staff is also very friendly and they have a nice bike storage area. The second section of the gym (with the stretch area/astro grass) can be a bit hot on warm days, I don’t think they have AC in there just a bunch of fans and it can get stinky and stuffy in there. The location can be a bit dodgy, with a lot of drug addicts in the area and there is also some tents close by under the bridge, but it’s fine if you drive there. Nice large bathroom and there is also plenty of parking available. Gym gets busy at about 4is - 7ish.

Came here from out of town. The gym has a ton a great equipment and a nice layout. It was very busy, but still functional!
The let down was the 35$ drop in fee! Definitely not worth that price.
The other disappointment was the staff. The front desk employee was extremely rude and and unwelcoming. Made us feel like we were an inconvenience to use their gym.
I wanted to love this place, buy a shirt, have a shake, and come back the next day. I didn’t do any of that thanks to how we were treated.

Pros: lots of equipment, average price for SF gyms, lots of franchise locations in the city, usually pretty clean

Cons: so so so so crowded; the only time it’s not almost unbearable is 6am. You also have to pay first and last month up front. Combined with needing to cancel 15 days before the next billing date, you may wind up paying for 2 extra months that you don’t want.

They are an ok gym but it is a very msygonistic crowd here, I’ve seen trainers eye the girls in the gym and make comments about what and how they are working out.
Another thing is that they are not truthful about their policies about guests. Even though we had clarified about their guest policy they still found a way to make my guest pay for a day pass.
I feel like there are better gyms out there that have better customer policy. There other branches aren’t that bad.

The SOMA location of Fitness SF is a great environment for work outs. I came here for classes a few years ago but then after covid, they knocked out the classroom and made a nice green area for warmups, stretching, etc.

About 18 months ago I started a personal training program here since my trainer before at Transbay moved on. I started working out with Nik Sandevski. I chose him since HIIT was listed as one of his areas of emphasis. Nik is a great trainer. He pushes me more than I would working out by myself. We also have fun talking about other things as well. Nik knows when to add weights and is always receptive to options from one workout to the next. Nik always mixes things up so I don't get bored!

Overall this is a fantastic location - easy parking and friendly staff.

Definitely not impressed and not very pleased with this gym. When I first started going it was much better, better equipment which gave much more of a variety. Now the better equipment has been replaced with machines that aren't good, they took out the better machines and now it's a gym full of a bunch people who sit on the equipment playing on their phones more than working out, or standing in the way socializing. Been to three of the Fitness SF locations now since joining a few weeks ago. This one is by far my favorite. As a (former) long time member of another gym that purports to be open all night (but isn’t), here are a few notes as to why you would spend the extra money to come to this gym:

-People come here to workout. At my former gym I always felt like I’d get stared down asking to work in on someone’s set, or even asking how many sets they had left. Working in seems to be common practice here, which I love

-There is towel service, so no having to throw a wet towel in your gym bag when you’re done

-The slightly higher cost of membership keeps the people out who would join just to use the showers.

This location in particular seems to truly be a judgement free place. I love that on any particular day I can wear workout clothes that really put me in the right mental space to get a good workout, and not feel like I’m being stared at. I love this gym and am so glad I made the switch.

I've been going to this gym for 2 years and it's definitely one of the (if not the) best gyms in the area! They have several power racks, barbells, dumbbells, benches and machines. Not to mention the little things like towel service and chalk. They've also recently updated the equipment in the gym, replacing older machines and weights with newer / fresher models which tells me that the management here is not complacent

If you're new to the gym or looking for a trainer, I would absolutely recommend Albert. I've learned so much from him in my time at this gym and it's clear to me he's very knowledgeable and dedicated (but at the same time, not pretentious). He's able to customize a workout plan specifically for you, regardless of what your fitness goals are - so if you're looking to be the strongest you can be, or if you want to get in the best shape of your life, I'm confident Albert can help you get there

DO NOT SIGN UP FOR FITNESS SF:
Extremely deceptive business practices. Large unaffordable charges to my account without my knowledge. Refusal to refund it, and threatened to send debt collectors after me if I opened a chargeback case.

Made me pay multiple months ahead due to policies that weren't even on the contract and I'm down so much money from this disaster.

I will be filing a case with the federal trade commission for fraudulent business practices.

Whatever you do, do not sign up for Fitness SF. They do not care about customers and will try and get as much money out of you as possible. Even the vice president literally made threats to me when I requested a refund.

There staff is friendly I've made friends with multiple of them and the equipment is pretty good. Huge spaces for lifting indoor and outdoor work out sections. This place Recreates the standard of what a gym experience should be as far as how well maintand the gym is its the gym of gym where you see all these dedicated people and go to pump out a great work out. I recommend this gym as a power lifter I have great standards for what a gym should be and this is the standard. Looking forward too returning. (Also to mention they had a food smoothie place that's currently closed but an amazing accommodation. But they have 5-6 fridges of drinks to choose from and wow that was clutch sometimes. And a stand full of a variety of 40+ Protein cookies and protein bars. And they can charge you through card on file. Perfect since who carries there wallet on a workout. **Update: my gym account was terminated 48h after posting this review**

[-] The gym smells (both sweat and pee)! Sometimes I hold my breath when entering. It is better in the morning especially if the cafe is toasting bread which covers the smell.

[-] Towels can have disgusting stains/marks. Need to check them every time before using them. Recently, I found one with stains after drying out myself (it was so disgusting!). When I showed it to the night manager, instead of saying "we are sorry", he told that the towel service is done by some other company and it is just a stain. I had a similar experience before and already told the morning manager, but it seems it is happening again!

I also saw someone use the towels to clean the dogs' area (possibly discharges!). They should add cleaning equipment for/in the dog area.

[-] Showers' walls are not clean. There are people around that look like they are cleaning, but the dirt on the walls stays the same for days. There was a case I tracked. I noticed it on a Thursday or earlier. I saw it again on Friday and told the morning manager. Then, I saw it again on Monday and Tuesday of the next week! I feel like telling the manager may not help at all.

[-] Showers have a common area between men and women section. Sometimes the people who clean the area forget to fully close the door! Be prepared for no privacy.

[-] Water pressure in women's showers is low (my husband and I compare it to our home). Again, this is something I already discussed with the manager.

[-] The hair dyer in the women's locker room is so weak. I see women bringing their own dryers. You may end up going to the windy outside (which is usually the case for SF) with wet hair.

[-] I think there is no air conditioning in the area. They circulate the air with fans which either makes it cold in the winter or is not enough during the hot summer days.

[-] Some of the Gym machines are not calibrated very well. I used a chest machine and felt different weights on my body, when I looked down, I noticed the seat is not screwed in the middle.

[-] The gym is very crowded 4-7:30 PM.

[-] They increased the membership price by $10 (about 10%) over the last year.

[-] They started adding fees (~$20) when you request for gym freeze.

I really enjoy this gym, but if you’re taking part of the dog room amenities, I would go either early morning or late at night if you don’t want random people going up to your dog. My dog is friendly with other dogs, but it’s just weird to me that non-dog owning members go in there to take photos with the dogs or pet the dogs. It’s a nice amenity but I wish there was a way of only letting people who bring their dogs to have access to the dog room. Honestly tired of other members treating the dog room like a petting zoo.

Edit: 1/23/23 when I signed up for this gym, the dog room was advertised as a place to leave your dog while you work out, not a dog therapy room. On their website it’s literally called “dog room”.

Imagine being in a room filled with men who will not accept that the answer is no. Best not to come here alone. Expect a workout comprised of hours of uninterrupted staring/leering. Make sure you can see behind you or keep your back to a wall at all times

Great facility with excellent lighting and ample squat racks / free weights. The layout is also nicely done, I feel like it's easy to focus here. Also the parking lot is nice to have when needed.

Wish they would go back to pre-pandemic hours and stay open until midnight. I know a lot of others feel this way as well And it would better serve people with limited windows of time to work out

Amazing space for working out.
The gym is huge and they have plenty of machines that covers the crowd very well.
The functional area is amazing and spacious and didn’t feel like it was crowded although there was a lot of people.

Love that it’s clean and that there’s parking.. but to go and have all the trainers gossiping about other people while they’re working out is a really toxic environment. 👎🏼

Persistent issues with the app that management refuses to acknowledge, much less remedy. Nobody wants the app. It’s intrusive, and, and always logs people out, and occasionally doesn’t work at all.

You are actively alienating members by requiring this stupid app and for what?

The gym is becoming a sauna. No air circulation at all. Gets very hot, humid and smelly inside the gym. Makes me super tired and not able to finish my workout. Don’t believe that they charge a 100$ a month, and can’t afford to have AC! Definitely this is not a few days/ year issue. It is everyday. Even when it’s cold outside, it’s extremely hot inside. No AC, they only have two fans for the whole gym that you don’t see/feel. If you go on a tour, just look how sweaty people are.

EDIT: Thanks owner! You’re the best. Changing to 5 stars.

Dear owner, the guy on sundays who closes refuses to sell drinks at 750 because he’s “done”. Every other day the staff is more than happy to. What’s up with that?

When you have parking feet away inside a tall gated parking area with cameras 🎥 you can’t compare to the quality of the equipment and amazing layout of gym floor is more than enough considering all the other locations. The best gym in the city 💪🏻

Terrible customer service experience. I emailed them for months to cancel my membership due to an illness and they kept charging me for 6 months. Finally I called and cancelled and they still charged me for the month. I honestly would consider going back because it’s a good gym (when I’m healthy) but this left a bad taste in my mouth.
