I started training at Flaherty’s Kenpo Karate Association when I was just 9 years old, and I had no idea how much it would shape the person I’d become. What began as a childhood hobby quickly turned into one of the most formative experiences of my life. Over the years, I worked my way through every belt, trained countless hours, and eventually earned my black belt; a milestone I’ll always be proud of.

Some of my best memories are from competing in championships and proudly bringing home first-place trophies. But more than the wins, it was the lessons that stuck with me: discipline, resilience, respect, and the drive to always give 100%, no matter the challenge.

Grandmaster Flaherty had a huge impact on my life. His teachings went far beyond martial arts. He instilled a mindset of dedication, humility, and perseverance that I carry with me to this day. Whether it’s in my personal life or career, the values I learned at Flaherty’s continue to guide me.

Great place to learn great karate. I have been at this dojo since 2009 and I have always felt like it was like a 2nd home. I am now 19, since I basically grew up here, I can confidently say that this is one of the best dojos out there with amazing instructors. As a retired schoolteacher, martial artist, and Kung Fu instructor, it is my pleasure and honor to write this review and recommendation for Flaherty’s Kenpo Karate Academy (FKKA) in Stockton, CA. In my most humble opinion, FKKA is probably, if not, the most elegant and elite martial arts studio in the San Joaquin Valley, owned and operated by Grandmaster Randall Flaherty, 10th degree black belt and his wife, Mariana.
I have known Grandmaster Flaherty for almost 15 years, and throughout this time, he and his co-instructor team, never ceases to amaze me with how much quality and passion they exhibit in conducting their classes with high quality martial arts instruction and treating their students with the utmost respect.
Upon entering the studio of FKKA, you will experience a warm and welcoming feeling; an aura depicting elegance, grandeur, and class. FKKA is truly a studio fit for royal status or be situated in a Hollywood setting. Draped in the lobby, from wall to wall, (and up to the ceiling), one cannot help but admire the awe-exquisite classy décor and endless variety of awards; along with trophies, articles, and artefacts depicting the world of martial arts. Many articles and awards on display show recognition of Grandmaster, and many of his precious students. Special displays and recognition awards showing the association of Grandmaster, with many famous celebrities and warriors in the martial arts world, are also intermixed into the fabric of this wonderful wall of celebration, honor, and pride.
Most importantly, FKKA is more than just a karate school; every student (and co-instructors) and their families are part of a collective, a family, a team where everyone learns and helps one another. My daughter has been asking to do martial arts training for about 2 years now. At the time, I felt that she was too young. I started at Flaherty's back in 1999 at an older location. After receiving my 1st Degree, I moved on to explore the world and arts - I traveled with the circus, I joined the Marine Corps, I trained in a variety of other martial arts, and I earned certifications in Personal Training, Fitness, and Strength Conditioning. Though I continue to coach 6-7 days a week at a few different martial arts schools today, no matter where I go, I find myself constantly pulling stories of how we trained back at "my old Kempo school."

After reconnecting later last year, I was happy to find the old ways were still alive with GM Flaherty, and the school and art were flourishing. No matter where I've been or what I've done, this school has always been the pinnacle of my training. I've recently returned to continue my training almost 25 years later because Flaherty's continues to be a force of excellence in the martial arts community. My twins are 8 and love coming to learn every week. This is an awesome Kenpo karate program and Mr & Mrs Flaherty are great in getting the kids to focus and excel. And as soon as they get to their orange belt, I would like to have them introduced to Arnis. A Filipino art that isn't seen too often.

I really like this place, I even recommended it to all my friends and family and letting them know about it and that the price is good. I have been going here for 2 and half years and can said that I enjoy training here. One of the main reasons are the instructors. The instructors are patient, understanding and welcoming. One of the best places to learn Karate as the instructor do a fantastic job of explaining the martial art. The grand master being the best example of this. But I would say that biggest reason I enjoy learn and training here is the dedication the students place in their Karate. That dedication can be seen as they go up the ranks and become black belts. Making this an excellent place to learn Karate of anyone.

My son has been attending this school since June of this year and they are so awesome with him. He's autistic and has a hard time paying attention for long periods of time but they are exceptionally patient with him. He loves going to class every week and has made friends as well. The owners, the Flahertys, are great with promoting discipline and confidence with their students while not showing any favoritism to anyone.

As a student who has been at this school since I was 9 years old up until present day (23 years old) Flaherty's Kenpo Karate has been my home away from home. This studio holds so many memories for me personally and I have learned countless ife skills and self defense skills from this studio. I cannot express in enough words the amount of impact this place has had on my life. Grandmaster Flaherty is the best at what he does, and he is wonderful with kids and wants nothing but for them to succeed by ensuring they are fully prepared for every belt-test they take. Not only does Grandmaster's information carry value through self defense, but also in life. I have had this studio and the experience I have gained here on my resume since the day I made it, and have left it there no matter what edits/changes I have made to it throughout the years. It has done nothing but proven time and time again that this place is invaluable to both your children and yourselves by helping with education, employment, and self defense. This place has taught me discipline, respect, self-confidence, and the value of hard work. Whether you are wanting to sign your kids up, or sign yourselves up, I can say with the utmost confidence that your experience here will be met with nothing but satisfaction. And there is one instructor here who I wish to pay a small tribute to that has been here since I have joined when I was a kid. Ms. Griggs who is one of Grandmaster's 4th degree black belt as of this date has also been one of the most amazing, funny, loving, and inspiring people I have met at this place. She has taught me in Private lessons that are offered here and I can safely say that if it wasn't for her I would not be the martial artist I am today. I can safely say that Ms. Griggs has become someone I consider both a family member and teacher. Without her I would not be wearing my First Degree Black Belt or the smile on my face. In short... I Joined the FKKA around a year ago, and I can say it is the best Dojo I have ever trained in.

Instructors there are amazing, the way they teach is so well done. They are very firm and serious, I say they are amazing.

I recently joined Flaherty's Kenpo Karate as an adult, and I couldn't be happier with my experience so far. The fact that they offer evening sessions specifically for teens and adults was a major selling point for me, as it perfectly fit into my busy schedule.

As someone who had previous experience in Taekwondo but was new to Karate, I was unsure about what to expect. However, the instructors at Flaherty's made the transition smooth and enjoyable. Their enthusiasm and dedication as black belts were evident from the first class, and it immediately put me at ease.

The belt progression system at Flaherty's Kenpo Karate is well-structured and provides clear goals for each level. With the guidance and support of the instructors, I was able to progress from White to Yellow and then to Orange belt smoothly.

My Grandson, Cameron Gonzales has been a student at Flaherty's Kempo Karate since he was 9 years old. And now at age 11, he just achieved his Junior Black Belt. Sensei Flaherty and the entire staff is so positive and friendly with all of the students, constantly encouraging them and providing constructive feedback as they strive to earn their next belt. This Karate Dojo has been the best at teaching my sisters. My sisters get easily discouraged but Mrs. Flaherty is always helping them learn how to do the moves correctly. My sisters are always excited to go to this Karate Dojo because they get a chance to show off what they have learned and excited to learn more. Master Flaherty is a great instructor! He is very knowledgeable and great with kids; all of them have a lot of fun in his class. My son has been doing karate at Flaherty’s Kenpo for 2 years now and loves it. He is 5 years old and has Autism. When he first started, he was mostly nonverbal and needed a little help listening and focusing. He speaks now and is also more focused and disciplined. Master Flaherty has been very patient with him and also made an extra effort to help my son reach his full potential. I highly recommend this place for kids of all abilities!

Great place to learn karate. Not only does it cover self defense, but also competitive fighting, breaking, and etc. Also the Grandmaster is very friendly and very compatible with people's schedules. Grandmaster Flarety is a man that by his greed hurt my daughter by the way he wrote stuff about the dogo that she attends that was associated with him, how can he hurt his pupils that way, so disappointed in the way a grandmaster acts, how sad, I will never ever go or say anything good about FKKA STOCKTON , not what kids should be thought.

11/16/2016About 4 years ago, my son’s school called me and said he was being bullied by a group of kids. I found out from him it had been happening all year. When I asked him why he never told me, he said he was afraid I would get mad at him. That same day we met Grandmaster Flaherty and his wife Mariana. My nervous, skinny little 10-year-old son who had been wearing glasses since he was 3 agreed to try the free class that day. He has been a student of Flaherty’s Kenpo Karate ever since. Over the years, being a single father, I have had to ask for advice from the Grandmaster and Mrs. Flaherty on more than one occasion. They have always listened and been able to help. My son doesn't get bullied anymore, and has never had to use his Martial Arts training against anyone. Today my son has confidence in himself. He is very respectful, and loves to teach what he haslearned to other students. He is a freshmen in high school and currently has 4 A+s, 1 A, & 1 B, the best grades ever. He will soon be testing for his Junior Black Belt. I am very proud of my son, and have watched him grow and mature since we first came to this DOJO. Over the years, watching the Grandmaster and his Black Belt Instructors train my son, I, too, have grown. I am no longer the unapproachable guy my son could not come to for help. In addition, I want to give a special thanks to Mrs. Griggs (3rd Degree Black Belt), trained by the Grandmaster. She has been giving private lessons to my son for about 2 ½ years. Flaherty's Kenpo Karate Association is an excellent place for your child to learn confidence and focus in a warm and inviting setting. Grandmaster Flaherty's many decades of martial arts study and instruction are on display as he guides the students through the nuances of kenpo and the discipline necessary for success. I brought my son here as a five-year-old after he felt frustrated with soccer. Grandmaster Flaherty was very reassuring and patient, kindly working with him in group and one-on-one settings, his wife--also a black belt--helping with instruction. We have been going to FKKA for about two-and-a-half years now and feel grateful to be part of the family.
