I've started working out at Functional Lifestyles in May 2025, going to their group workouts and checking in with coach Francisco Guiao. I'm mostly a runner, I was looking to add strength training to my routine and didn't know where to start. I love this gym. Their group workouts are fun, motivating and there's a low client/coach ratio so the coaches really make sure your form is good and correct you. I also love that I don't have to plan my workouts / use the machines. Personal coaching sessions with Francisco have been very individualized to my needs and tailored to my goals. I now feel stronger and more confident. I would 100% recommend.

I’ve been a member of Functional Lifestyles for over 2.5 years, and I love how the group classes keep strength training fun and safe. The workouts are intentional and challenging, while also welcoming to wherever you are in your fitness journey. Their 1:1 coaching support keeps me accountable, and over the years, I’ve made some incredible friendships and become part of an authentic community.

I really appreciate the team Corey has built. The coaches are absolutely amazing - supportive, knowledgeable, and truly invested in each member's progress. It also means a lot that I’m able to support a local business that genuinely cares about its people, members and staff alike.

It’s exciting to see FL move into this new location in downtown Palo Alto: easy parking, a great layout, and close to other businesses, which makes it super convenient. Looking forward to more PRs with Functional Lifestyles!

Love this gym! Great coaches, friendly atmosphere. I've been to other gyms where the coaches yell or focus too much on going fastest or going heaviest -- here the coaches really get to know individuals, spend time checking in about any injuries or modifications need, and push you in the "right" way so you can build strength without getting hurt. I'm stronger and feel better generally since I started coming to Functional Lifestyles. Highly recommend!

I've been working out at FL for over three years. The coaches are knowledgeable, caring & inspiring. Big focus on correct movements, safely recovering from injury & not getting hurt in the first place.

And I love the sense of community that I've been able to build with my rest of the 8am crew.

I’ve been coming here for 20 months and it’s been life-changing. I’m the fittest I’ve ever been and have made great new friends along the way. Classes are small (about 10 people) with 2 attentive coaches who always give helpful feedback on form. If I’m dealing with an injury, they immediately offer safe alternatives so I can still train effectively. I also love that my well-behaved goldendoodle is welcome—he enjoys coming to class as much as I do! This gym truly feels like a community.

I first stopped in at FL in November 2021, having biked several times past the rowing machines that were often stationed outside their old location on Park Ave. Before I knew it, I was taking a functional fitness assessment, which proved what I had always known about myself: I was one of the least flexible people I had ever met, and this wasn't false modesty.

Fast-forward to March 2025, when I took home the second place men's power-lifting trophy in my first event inside the sparkling new location on High St. The coaches are all delightful people and VERY good at what they do, offering targeted advice and corrections for each of 10 people per class at different points in their fitness journeys. The coaches and the community of fellow clients are the reason I show up 3 times a week. I've never had a serious injury (or even close) in almost four years of training here. The positive vibes and cute dogs are enough to motivate me towards a PR on even the slowest, grayest morning before my coffee has kicked in.

I can't say enough good about FL, honestly, nor overstate its impact on my strength, fitness and mobility, confidence, perseverance and attitude.

After moving to NorCal, I was on the hunt for a gym that wasn’t just another crowded space with random workouts—and I finally found it at Functional Lifestyles Palo Alto.

From day one, I felt at home. Francisco did my assessment and set the tone with a thoughtful, personalized approach. Corey, the owner, is so down-to-earth and even jumps in on classes. I’ve also trained with Jamie, Billy, and Damian, and every single coach brings both expertise and energy. They actually watch your form, coach you through adjustments, and push you in the right ways.

What sets FL apart is their model: semi-private sessions (10 clients, 2 coaches), which means you get personalized attention without losing the motivation of a group atmosphere. The programming is smart—focused on movement quality, strength, and conditioning that translate into real-life performance. As someone training for Hyrox, this has been a game changer.

The community here is just as strong as the workouts. People cheer each other on, and it truly feels like a team environment. Palo Alto, you’re lucky to have this spot—I can’t recommend it enough.

About three years ago my kids were finally sleeping through the night, they were in the cusp of leaving toddler-hood and as a working mom I finally had the energy to start thinking of myself a bit more. A nice acquaintance introduced me to this gym and I will admit that I was a bit intimidated. I’ve never really felt “at home” in a gym or workout place. But everyone was so nice and encouraging and from the first meeting this place showed me that it was really something else. We have officially been part of this community for three years now and I’ve never felt judged or diminished, rather appreciated and encouraged. Also, the community is so diverse, as are the coaches- who are seriously ALL amazing. It makes such a difference to see a range of bodies, ages, to hear from Celia Cruz to Chicago to M83. And they have such patience with my clambering children and even pups. I think seeing their mom lift heavy weights helps them see themselves as able and strong as well.

My life is so much healthier and happier having this place to make me stronger and less stressed. I really do see this as one of the best investments I am doing in myself and well being for the long term.
So! If you are local and are hoping to find a place to workout, that will take you as you are and just encourage you and push you to reach a stronger, healthier chapter of you you should check them out.

I’m new to Functional Lifestyles (FL) and have taken five classes so far, including the two complimentary intro sessions - and I’m already a fan. While I came in with a solid fitness base from cycling, running, and strength training, there’s always room to learn and grow. The coaches here are top-tier, and the programming is both thoughtful and challenging.

Shoutout to founder Corey for building something truly special. FL combines the best of what we want in a gym: access to talented coaches - listed here in the order I met them: Francisco, Jamie, Billy, Damian, and Lex - a fun community to work out with, and a space that’s clean, well-designed, and welcoming. Special mention to CFO (Chief Furry Officer) Kona, who adds to the positive energy every time you walk in.

I’m excited to begin 1:1 coaching with Lex and continue my FL journey. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a fitness community that goes beyond the basics.

After working out by myself for a few years, I finally decided to join Functional Lifestyles in 2024. A year and a half down the road, it's hard to overstate how amazing this place is.

Although I was slightly intimidated at first, the coaches instantly made me feel welcome and comfortable during the on-boarding process. The entire team is friendly and supportive, and class sizes are small enough for everybody to get the right amount of attention. And, although each day has a programmed workout, all exercises can be scaled back to match any fitness level. Can't do a movement? The coaches will find something that works for your body that day! Add in the focus on movement quality and regular check-ins with a dedicated coach to keep you on track, and you've got a winning recipe!

All in all, Functional Lifestyles has helped me build strength, work through long-term mobility issues and resolve injuries sustained outside of the gym. Both the coaches and the gym's community are extremely supportive, which makes every workout something to look forward to!

Been a member since 2023. Joined for one-on-one support rehabbing from a hip replacement. Ended up staying to become one of the many elder members of this terrific community. It starts with the coaches and services: The coaches are so constructive, encouraging and engaging. (Someone does a great job of hiring great humans.) I attend 2-3 times a week to supplement my daily workout routine and maintain mobility. I get more out of my one hour sessions with FL than I do in a 2.5 hour session on my own. Besides the strength and conditioning, I started beginner yoga...never had the courage to attend a formal yoga space. Staff also helps me fix my occasional knots, aches, and pains. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a supportive community to keep moving forward in life.

I love the group classes at Functional Lifestyles! The trainers are very knowledgeable, and even though there are other people in the class, it almost feels like you are getting a personal training session. I've been going twice a week for two months, and I can already tell that I am getting stronger. Plus, the classes are fun, so I always look forward to working out.

I've been coming to this gym for over 5 years, and it's my home away from home. The coaches are knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely care about each person's journey. The community here is also special—encouraging, inclusive, and always cheering each other on.

I worked out through both of my pregnancies (until a few days before my deliveries) and felt safe and strong every step of the way. Postpartum, I was able to bring my babies to the gym so that I could work out :) And now, I'm stronger than ever before.

So... whether you're just starting out (I had never done any weightlifting before coming to FL) or looking to level up, this is the place to be. I can’t recommend it enough!

Becoming a member at FL has changed my life. It's where I go to de-stress and hang with my FL family. If you're looking for amazing trainers and low coach to member ratio classes, this is the gym for you!

In addition my persistent issues with back and hip flexor pain is non-existent thanks to her dedication and persistence towards figuring out how to adhesive pain free movement.

I was a part of Functional Lifestyles for 2 years before I had some life changes that made me unable to keep attending class. Saying goodbye to this community was one of the saddest parts about this new season of my life. I loved working out with these folks. I knew the coaches cared about me. When I was having a bad day, they gave me a high five for showing up and encouraged me to take it easy. When I was sandbagging and they knew I could do more, they pushed me. I've been a crossfitter for a decade, but I think this was the strongest I've ever been. Their 6-week cycle programming gives you very clear measures of progress, and they're always giving the why behind the movement. I loved that I got to work out with a diverse group of people – true athletes looking for high intensity, and lower key folks just trying to stay healthy and move their bodies. Can't say enough about his crew. I think they're doing great work and only wish my life circumstances allowed me to keep going!

FL is a great place to train for several reasons.
1. The programming is outstanding. Programming workouts is really hard. Corey and his team put together an engaging, diverse, and complete programming.
2. The coaches are knowledgable and helpful. Training to make progress injure free requires attention and care. FL focuses on the right things.
3. They make the training really fun and that kept me coming.

Functional Lifestyles is a standout among gyms. Over the years, I’ve had numerous gym memberships, but there are a few key elements that set FL apart from the rest.

First and foremost is their coaching staff. Each coach is highly trained and brings unique expertise to the table. They genuinely want to understand you as an individual and are dedicated to helping you achieve your fitness goals.

Next is the dynamic workout structure and class schedule. The small class sizes provide a personalized workout experience, almost like having a one-on-one coaching session. With classes available throughout the day, it's easy to find a time that fits your schedule. Each day offers a different workout, blending mobility, strength, and conditioning.

Finally, the culture and community at FL is exceptional. Corey, the gym owner, has created an environment that is welcoming, fun, and challenging. You truly feel like part of the family, with no egos and no intimidation.

I highly recommend checking out Functional Lifestyles if you're feeling stuck or need a change of pace. You'll benefit from the structured, accountable approach—and have a lot of fun in the process.

Functional Lifestyles fraudulently billed me for >$1000 while refusing repeated requests to stop.

When I started at Functional Lifestyles I enjoyed their novel approach to working out through fitness. But when I tried to quit, their customer service turned into a bureaucratic nightmare. They would stop my billing temporarily and the re-start it without my consent. Then they would refuse to give me a refund for charges for dozens of classes which I never attended.

Do not trust them with your payment information.

Edit:
The owner has responded, which compels me to respond with more detail: On Friday, August 28th, 2020, I asked their billing to "Please stop billing until I restart it." in an email telling them that I was leaving the state. In stead of stopping my billing, they put it on pause for 3 months, and then *automatically restarted it*.

These charges continued for 3-4 months until I caught them charging me on March 2, 2021 and requested a refund, shocked. They refused the refund because they told me that I needed to tell them not to bill me repeatedly, months later, if I didn't want billing to be turned on again. This was in direct contradiction to my request, which was to *cancel* billing, not to pause billing, and is the basis of my complaint here.

They told me that I needed to have messaged them 3 days prior to my bill date (after 3 months of not being billed and with no direct notification of the automatic unfreezing of my account) in order to not bee charged. They tell me that the contract I signed says no refunds and so there are no conditions under which I will get a refund.

The response from the owner claims that I was under a 12 week commitment and so was not billed wrongfully. I moved away in week 10, requested they cancel ("Cancel billing until I turn it back on") in week 10, and discovered that billing had been restarted automatically from week ~22 to week ~38 without my knowledge or presence. If the owner had only charged me for the 12 week commitment I would not have complained - they charged me for *28* weeks and then refused to refund me.
I felt betrayed, dismayed, and cheated, and then they fine-printed me on the the non-refund policy in the original 12 week contract.

Stay safe.

I have probably tried every gym in town and this is the first one that has stuck… for several years now! It just has that perfect balance of challenging you while keeping it fun. An hour seriously flies by there and it always includes some great jams, some laughs, some cheering, sweating and friendly competition. The format of 2 trainers for every small group works perfectly for me. It provides just the right amount of attention to make me feel safe and confident in trying new challenging exercises and it keeps me accountable (i.e. makes it hard to cheat 🙄). All the trainers are fab but my favs are Corey (the owner), Cisco & Evan. Don’t join if you want showers, spa, a pool etc. Do join if you want a place where everyone knows your name, keeps track of your progress and makes you feel like they give a damn. Oh and if you want to get stronger, leaner, faster, hotter 😉

I have been a member for a couple years. FL consistently produces great programming that challenges both beginner and advanced athletes.

That being said, with old coaches leaving and new coaches joining, something about the vibe has changed. Often I found the coaches not as attentive and just chat with each other when I can see someone clearly performing an exercise wrong.

I reluctantly joined FL two years ago after much nagging by my daughter who is a big FL fan and goes to the gym 7 days a week when she is home from college. Fast forward two years and I am a convert and fan of FL.

I’m in my mid 50s and have been relatively healthy and have been more career focused as I took my health for granted. FL has been very good in educating me in the importance of being healthy - a good balance of strength, mobility and conditioning.

When I first joined the gym I was stiff as a board, had ongoing joint pains and could see that age was starting to catch up much sooner than I expected. Now after two years (3 times a week) at the gym, I feel much stronger, my mobility and flexibility have increased 10 fold (I still have some ways to go), and the joint pains are a thing in the past.

The coaches do care and the small class size feels like you have your own personal trainer without having to break the bank. All the coaches are well informed and they do make real-time accommodations for each of the individuals in the class. Coach Mike has literally been my personal physical therapist to help me work on my mobility.

The monthly coach check-ins to review your goals, make adjustments to your workout plans (both in and out of the gym), address nutrition, etc. help in accountability and ensure progress.

I do see myself being at the gym for years if not decades. FL has become an integral part of my week.

I've moved around a lot and worked out at more gyms than I can remember (of all types: large inexpensive gyms, fancy gyms, CrossFit, small personal training studios, etc.), and Functional Lifestyles (FL) is by far the best experience I've ever had.  For starters, it's kind of inaccurate to call it a gym - it is much more than that.  Yes, you can work out / exercise at FL, but you can also learn about nutrition, general health and wellness, all while being part of a tight knit and welcoming community.  The coaches are all amazing - and it's great because they are a bit different from one another in their styles, personalities, points of emphasis (and even music tastes!). You always feel like you're learning something.  Most importantly, they are all extremely good trainers, and they make sure that you're continuing to move forward in the pursuit of your goals.  You'll never be bored by their frequently changing programs.  Corey and the rest of the FL crew have a little training gold mine in Palo Alto, and I recommend it to anyone (of any skill level or age) who wants to get healthier while being part of an amazing gym community.  Keep up the great work FL!

This gym is great and a fun place to be. The workouts are well planned and thought out and, importantly, focus on your general fitness and the quality of your movement rather than on quantity. The size of the classes is also just right: small enough to make you feel like you're getting enough attention, while big enough to make them fun. The coaches are also friendly, really know their stuff and are very patient with newcomers. Highly recommended.

The BEST small group training in the Bay Area (maybe CA?!)! Coaches who actually care, a program that allows you to actually work on all aspects of fitness (mobility, strength, nutrition). A gym that focuses on your well-being as a whole!

I've tested out a lot of different programs and nothing quite compares. I feel a lot stronger and wiser when it comes to moving my body (and it's a proceess) since coming to FL. Again, would like to emphasize, a program that looks at everyone as a whole with coaches that go out of their way to ensure you stay healthy.

Although I recently joined, this gym is exactly what I needed. Nothing too fancy but has everything you might need to get the workout you want, from equipment to trainers. (including jammin music to get you motivated).
You also have the option to either workout inside or out, a great way to enjoy the outdoors and still have a good workout.
I recommend to anyone who is looking for a proper workout (tailored to your needs) in a laidback spot. 10/10 :)

FL is my happy fitness place. The coaches are knowledgable, attentive, patient, motivating and truly caring. Love the format of small group sessions, the strength and conditioning training cycles, the space, the equipment and the all around positive "we are in this together" vibe. I feel fortunate to be part of this community.

The gym that has kept me in shape, joyfully, since June 2018! FL has not only impressed me with its very convenient location with tons of parking spots and good dining places around, it has been instrumental in giving me a sense of community. The coaches are terrific - in addition to being friendly they're extremely knowledgeable and are always ready to teach and support your goals. i have tried a bunch of standard gyms and boutique gyms via Class Pass and i stuck to nothing. And did i mention this gym is dog-friendly?! Highly recommend FL!

Want to get serious about your physical well being? Care more about consistency and longevity than immediate results?
Want to feel better than you ever have?
If so, then Functional Lifestyles is the place for you.

I walked in over 6 months ago, hopeful and skeptical.

What I've experienced since has exceeded any hopes or expectations I had.

I'm stronger, more flexible, more energetic, and more enthused about fitness than I ever have been.

I love the gym, the coaches, the program, and most importantly, the community.

Consider me a fan!

It's been almost 2 years since I joined the gym! All the staff and coaches, including Corey, Michael, Julian, and many others are very helpful!

The classes are set up in a small group (max to 10 people w/ 2 coaches). The content is usually mixed of various activities (warm up, strength, conditioning). It is a very nice middle ground compared to private coach and large group setup. You will get enough directions and attentions from the coaches without paying $100+ per hour.

For people like me who does not like to plan my workout schedule, this is definitely a perfect gym for me. I come here twice a week, and I have lost 9% body fat without changing much of my diet.

If you are looking for a gym that has friendly staff, informative coaches, and leanback atmosphere, this is definitely the right place to come! They usually offer a free trial (2 free sessions, with the cost that Corey will chat with you for two hours if you don't stop him... lol). Highly recommend you come and try it out!

Corey & his team - Michael, Jesse, Jillian and Evan - have been life changing. That may seem hyperbolic, but it's true. I was an overweight sedentary woman in her 40s who'd never lifted. They met me where I was & I feel so much stronger and fitter. Now to be more regular in 2020.

I joined 6 months ago and haven't looked back. The coaches are great, friendly and genuinely care about what's best for the members. They have even worked around several injuries to ensure i'm still getting the best of the workout

I took, what I considered, a gamble by signing up with Functional Lifestyles for their three month trial period. It was my first sustained gym experience and quite frankly they were the answer I was definitely needing!

Anyone hesitating whether for financial, personal or procrastinating justifications - just stick with it for at least three months because they'll fix you right up.

These trainers have the knowledge and discipline to help others with patience and accuracy. Its definitely worth it!

To become a member at functional lifestyles is the best self care decision I ever made. The coaches are amazing, not only are they super competent, they also make you feel welcome and included in the “family” from day 1. Been part of this awesome community since September 2018 and can wholeheartedly recommend functional lifestyles to anyone who want to have a functional body - no matter how fit you are or how challenging your goals are. The team at functional lifestyles will help your improve from any starting point. 👏👏👏

Functional Lifestyles is the best in the Bay Area! Coming here you are not just a member working out in a class but you become part of their family. From the first moment you walk in the door, you are always greeted like they have not seen you in years. Once the workout begins, the coaches are there to correct your form and make sure you are pushing yourself to the next level. Whether you are in class coached by Corey, Michael, Evan, Glenn, Jillian, and/or Zvia you always know you are going to get a killer workout. Plus as an added bonus there are doggies there that you can not help but love! You will be missing out if you don't join this place!!!

I have tried a lot of gyms and workout styles, but haven't found anything like Functional Lifestyles. This is the best gym I have ever been to.

I tried group fitness but 20-30 people per coach in single room didn't leave much room for a complete workout. I tried cross-fit but the workouts were just too tough and I hurt myself. I tried personal training but it was just too expensive. But I gained the most from personal training.
Functional Lifestyles is better than even personal training and much cheaper. Small groups with two coaches assigned per group is just the ideal thing for me. The workouts are complete and very well planned. All the coaches are very knowledgeable and they make sure even every small detail about your exercise form is taken care of.

There is a fun atmosphere in the gym. In spite of the workouts being challenging, I feel motivated to come to the gym regularly. 6 months in this gym and I have already broken my PRs in bench press and deadlift which had plateaued for over a year. My cardio vascular conditioning has improved a lot. I strongly recommend this gym.

This is legit hands down the best gym I have ever joined! I look forward to going to the gym now and they are the reason. From the moment I stepped foot in that garage I felt apart of this awesome fun family. Corey and the coaches are so down to earth and kind. I will say the dogs are honestly what lured me in! But coach Mike, Jesse, and Jillian are amazing. They always make sure you are doing everything correctly and especially making sure we don’t hurt ourselves. Being a travel nurse I unfortunately had to leave but I would definitely recommend this gym!!

I was in town for work 1 week, and these guys were able to accommodate my crazy fitness needs. They welcomed me to their family and treated me well. Highly recommended if you’re in the area. Also, a big shout out to Mike, since he’s a really cool coach. Also, the staff is on great shape, which you don’t see everywhere (which seems important to me)!

Hands down the best place to work out. When I think of gyms, I run in the opposite direction but this is the only place where I feel more confident pushing my boundaries, where people really make a sincere effort to help you feel at ease and try new exercises. Corey, Michael and Jessy are the best trainers in town. It is worth every penny and hour that you spend inside the FL. Good luck!

Amazing gym, knowledgeable trainers, balanced workouts plus friendly & motivating company.

Joined Functional Lifestyles not so long ago and loved it from the very first session: nearly one to one attention from trainers for small teams of up to eight people. They show, explain, spot, motivate and EDUCATE making sure you get the most out of your workout for quality functional lifestyle, hence the name of the place.

A typical training sessions is the mix of warm-up, cardio, strength and conditioning to achieve your personal fitness goals (no matter what they are) and make you feel right 24/7. Got questions? They'd be happy to help.

Another huge plus is an option to tailor your own flexible training schedule; stop by in the morning or after working hours. Fellow fitness enthusiast to motivate you in achieving your goals, enough weights, equipment and machines for the whole group is a huge bonus too.

Do not take my word for granted, swing by and make sure yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Stronger. Flexible. Faster. Mentally tough. Well rested. Injury free. After working out at Functional Lifestyles since they opened in April I feel all of these things and understand their Pursuit of Balance. Over that time I have achieved personal best times in a marathon, 10K, and increased my overall endurance and strength. My sleep quality has improved and my eating habits are better thanks to the advice I’ve received. Bottom line, Functional Lifestyles has a formula that helps balance your life without burning you out.

It’s not just a gym where you train to get physically stronger, it is so much more than that. It is a community of liked minded people of all abilities coming together to pursue a healthy lifestyle they know can’t be achieved on their own. The encouragement I receive from the coaches and fellow athletes has enabled me to push through glass ceilings I never thought possible. The fun relaxed atmosphere coupled with the energizing music is so contagious you can’t help feeling motivated to do your best in this judgment-free environment.

Classes are offered at 6, 7, 8, 9am and 4, 5, 6, 7pm Mon-Fri and 8, 9, 10am on Saturday. There us a 12pm class on Mon, Wed, Fri. The workouts are programmed on a 6-week cycle with each day complementing the one before. I like the variety of the classes and available options which make it easier to attend based on my schedule.

The price per class is significantly cheaper when compared to other Palo Alto gyms like Equinox. The more you attend the cheaper the cost per class. Personally I feel that I get the value of a trainer, coach, nutritionist, and mentor wrapped up in one low cost. If you are looking to achieve a balance and sustainable way of life Functional Lifestyles is the place for you.
