Yoga studio Pilates studioAbout the Club
Funky Door Yoga opened in 2001 by Lynn Whitlow & Jeff Renfro. It quickly became known as THE YOGA HOT SPOT around the world, winning many awards, featured in numerous commercials, movies, and yoga documentaries.
The studio is a cross between a museum and a fun palace, filled with cartoons by renowned illustrator Ed Renfro.
Lynn & Jeff sold the studio in 2006 and went on to open up many other yoga studios, including Yoga Hell Petaluma, Yoga Hell Brooklyn and Hella Yoga Berkeley.
Funky Door closed at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. After being dark for 18 months, they teamed up with Ry Toast and Carl Stoeber to resurrect Funky Door in all its glory.

STAY AWAY! An employee at the Berkeley location made disgusting sexual remarks to me over the phone. I confronted them and they were unapologetic and put the blame on me for being a cold caller. WOMEN—do not attend this studio. Disgusting!

Happy to see that the Berkeley location and SF location have mostly the same vibe. Laid back and friendly atmosphere and I just love the disco lights and booming stereo (when appropriate — some classes are all natural light and silence !)

Absolutely an amazing place! My wife and I love it here. The community is wonderfully joyous. The teachers are all great. They have an array of classes from the traditional bikram yoga to Pilates to mixed tapes to all kinds of pop ups. A great workout with great people. What could be better!

I love this studio and spending time there. The staff are super friendly, know your name like Cheers and the doggos roaming around are a bonus. I find so much peace in participating in the classes and feel very much present and grounded. The yoga mixtape classes are the best and in my opinion transcendental. The vibe inside the studio is old school just like the mixtapes which speak to my heart. I am so happy to have found this place and I really never write reviews but I had to for this studio.

Bottom line: Funky Door feels unsanitary/dirty, and management can be rude. The silver lining is the great teachers. If you’ve practiced Bikram anywhere else, Funky Door as a studio is going to be disappointing.
I debated writing this review but felt that my experience has been so negative and so different from other yoga studios that it seemed important to share. When I moved to Berkeley, I picked my apartment building to be close to Funky Door because I was so excited to join the community. Over the course of two years, Funky Door management took that excitement and turned it into me feeling unwelcome and unsafe.
I have been practicing regularly (1-2 times per week) at Funky Door Berkeley for two years. I’ve practiced Bikram for almost 20 years and have been a regular student and/or a work-study at 6 different studios in that time, so I have a good basis for comparing experiences. I’ll start by saying that most of the teachers at Funky Door are wonderful – particularly Estevan, Ish, Alison, Trey, Lisa, and Chris – and many of the students are kind.
That is where the positives end. Most studios that originated as Bikram are peaceful, quiet, and meditative. Funky Door constantly plays loud music (pop, rock, lots of high tempo/lyrics, last time it was Dua Lipa) in the lobby and I can often hear it inside the hot room, especially because the teachers open the windows right into…you guessed it…the lobby. You also hear dogs barking during almost every afternoon class.
They also allow those dogs (I’ve seen at least 7 different dogs over 2 years) to hang out for hours in the studio, and I have seen them get into the hot room on multiple occasions (picture attached) – including once where I opened my eyes from final savasana to see a dog licking my water bottle. They run around on the carpet and in the locker rooms where we are required (and I mean required) to walk barefoot. It makes the whole studio feel unsanitary to me. I’ve never been in another studio where I actively worried about having bare feet (which we then touch with our hands during the practice….). I’ve tried to wear my indoor flip flops in the hallway and the women’s locker room where the dogs spend all their time and have been aggressively scolded by Lynn and Ry.
On that note, the toughest part for me is the management. Lynn and Ry instantly became rude and combative with me when their front-desk staff made a mistake with a credit card charge (not the first time either – they also charged me in once for someone else’s water/mat purchase and I let it go because I figured, hey, mistakes happen). All I did was call the studio to ask for clarification about a second unexpected charge that I received from Funky Door, and I suddenly found myself on the phone with Lynn, who all but explicitly said that I’m a liar. The staff member who had made the original mistake that resulted in the charge lied to Lynn and Ry to cover up her mistake, although she later apologized to me in private. Lynn and Ry seem aggressive and dismissive of students’ emotional safety, and never acknowledged their part in the issue to me in person, even though I saw both of them at least twice after the incident. I tried to go back for a few weeks and was so uncomfortable that I won’t ever visit Funky Door again.
All that to say, some of the teachers are great, but this is the worst Bikram studio I’ve attended in the last twenty years.

This is an incredible studio. Ry and Carl are amazing people. They helped me get into the classes to start my health journey. They run this studio with love and kindness. The teachers are great - I attend classes from Allison, Marsha and Ish and they are absolutely the best. Great rhythm, clear instructions, loads of encouragement and emphasis on peace and mindfulness. Everyone here is great - it is clean and well maintained. They have my highest recommendation!!

I had a very upsetting experience when I called this business. The person who answered the phone was extremely rude and used vulgar, offensive language toward me. I was shocked by the unprofessionalism. I hope management takes this seriously and addresses it appropriately, as no caller should ever be treated this way.

Update at three years after opening: continues to be amazing with a second studio added. Many new instructors who totally deliver. Classes have diversified with hot pilates, 60 minute bikram sessions, and occasional other offerings (hatha, twerking, mixtapes, etc!). Innovative, colorful, fun, and a great sweaty time.
Update: it’s been 7 months since they reopened and it’s only gotten better! Can I add a sixth star? New flooring, more fun classes, expanding community, SO GOOD!
This place is fabulous!
The new owners (and original founders) have returned, and the whole team are totally on top of re-opening the studio.
It smells fine, the strong female instructor team (Ry and Andrea) are totally kick-ass, and the space is really fun with cartoon illustrations adorning the walls.
I just started here since they reopened, but there's a long history and community of practitioners who've come back too.

Disappointed by unprofessional and Unempathetic service at Funky Door Yoga
I encountered an unexpected medical issue that prevented me from attending classes at Funky Door Yoga. Upon noticing a charge for next month's unlimited access, I promptly contacted the studio to explain my situation and request a refund.
I spoke with an individual named Jeff, who declined my refund request without acknowledging my medical circumstances. His demeanor was unempathetic and unprofessional; I hope our conversation was recorded for quality assurance purposes.
During our interaction, Jeff attempted to access my account but was unsuccessful due to security measures I have in place. He mentioned he would send me an email so I could provide a written explanation of my situation, but I never received any correspondence. Consequently, I found the studio's contact information and sent an email detailing my experience. Jeff eventually responded, but despite understanding that I couldn't utilize the service, he still refused to process a refund.
Additionally, I had two in person interactions with this individual in the class setting, where Jeff inquired about my nationality. When I mentioned I was from Georgia, he incorrectly associated it with Russia. I respectfully clarified that Georgia and Russia are distinct countries with different languages and alphabets, but he continued to refer to me as Russian, which was both insensitive and inappropriate.
Furthermore, I've observed Jeff making comments during class about the challenges of not being able to touch female students for instructional purposes without permission. Such remarks are concerning and reflect a lack of professionalism.
While there are several kind and welcoming individuals at this studio, it's disheartening that such behavior is tolerated.
Summary: strictly money oriented, unethical, Unempathetic, and unprofessional experience.

Yo, this place is fire! No actually, it’s for reals the best combination of well calibrated heat, humidity and fantastic new floors in the studios…. That’s right, plural. Studio(s)! One larger one that can accommodate the super popular and skilled teachers and a smaller more intimate space— both rock amazing lighting and sound.
The class offering are diverse with various pilates and yoga modalities and varying lengths of classes, lighting, music, weights etc.
The community is welcoming to newbies and will also push seasoned folks to their edge. It’s a vibrant vibe, with friendly folks.
But wait, there’s more…. Such attention to detail in the locker rooms, at check-in, new carpets, hosting competitions and teacher trainings, yoga challenges, international yoga adventures, great parking and bike racks.
A review wouldn’t be complete without a huge hat tip to Ry the master DJ yoga instructor who makes customs mixtapes that have the room laughing, dancing and jamming to a majestically curated yoga session. Did I mention this place is fire!?!

Amazing teachers and great vibe - very much recommended. Great value vs other gyms as well. I wasn't familiar with Bikram Yoga prior although I practiced many other forms of Yoga. The heated space really up levels the experience and I can totally let go and really engage with my body in a healthy way. Teacher's provide a great balance in which you're "pushed" only so far you're getting the best out of yourself including honoring you're own limits. Overall very much recommended!

I only have amazing things to say about this studio. I personally teach pilates and have loved to branch out my understanding and practice by trying out other studios and methods, but Funky Door has stood out in every category. Best teachers, best atmosphere, and fantastic classes all around. After my first class I was instantly hooked and I always leave feeling satisfied. I live part time in Berkeley but my primary residence is in San Jose, and I will always make the hour drive to come to their classes, it’s that good. This is initials M.S writing this review, if it's in need to look up for reference for accuracy. I'm only remaining private by using my parent's email account, not my direct contact one in hopes of feeling safe after posting this review. I want to feel comfortable writing and posting this honest, and factual review. I will never forgot what had happened to me on the month of June 2023. I was a member of Funky door yoga for many years, I had zero issues with the previous owners, and spent over at least starting 3k + total in membership fees, and for many months I never even attended to any classes. For many years, I rarely stayed for savasana in any of the classes due to the women's locker being usually overcrowded. The women’s locker room, only having 3 shower rooms, and it's challenging to even to make space for yourself to change your clothes after when you shower. Due to people checking in and leaving it’s a mess. So, I usually leave 5 mins or earlier, and it has never been an issue. Or even if I arrived late, I know certain pose it's okay to still drop in. Again, I had zero issues with previous owners and even the new instructors that is still teaching at Funky door yoga.
My reason for posting this review is to all young women beware of taking Jeff R. (Owner) classes. I attended his class twice in the year of 2023. The second class I took of him, made me decide to cancel my membership. It was when I attended his class on July 2023 during my experience in Jeff class it left me thinking that his behavior towards me was very condescending, discriminating, and even assaultive. I did not give him any permission to touch me, nor in anyway expected him to stop me, and grab me by my arm while I was planning to leave his class.
On the month of July 2023 during one of Jeff R class I have taken, I decided not to stay in Savanna as usual for many years. I was already standing up and getting ready to take off. Jeff R stopped me and grabbed my arm or asked me ‘Where are you going? You came to my class late and are now leaving early, stay until the end of class!’ I was startled and stayed. I canceled my membership and decided never to return. The cancellation process is a headache, and I feel exactly how the other customer posted reviews from Josh K. about the cancellation policy. Also expect to pay another month even if you cancel during mid of the month.
It's none of his business if I choose to leave the class early and never been an issue with other instructors and past instructors, and fact that the Women's restroom only has 3 showers, and usually crowded and no space to get out when it's time for you to want to change or get out to the door. how do you expect us to leave in a timely manner and usually there is a long wait for the women showers after class is over.

Funky Door Yoga in Berkeley is my go-to spot whenever I’m in the East Bay seeking another hot yoga class. I’m a regular at their sister studio in Petaluma, they have created that funky and unique atmosphere that sets itself apart from all the other studios I’ve practiced at in the Bay Area.
With a variety classes to choose from, skilled instructors and the best vibe in the Bay Area, there is a class to suit your mood and fitness goals.
I highly recommend Funky Door Yoga to anyone in the Berkeley area looking for a great hot yoga studio. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just starting your journey, this place will undoubtedly become your go-to hot yoga spot in Berkeley.

When I first walked into Funky Door Yoga for a Bikram60 class on a cold and ugly January (2023) afternoon, I wasn’t fully aware of what I was getting myself into. It’s not that I was new to Bikram, but 3 out of the 4 times that I’ve tried, it ended poorly for me and discouraged me from doing it again.
But this time, it was different. I saw more positives than the negatives. I was safe. I was being observed by a professional. I wasn’t going to get sick. I wasn’t pressured into doing something I didn’t want to do. I could work at my own pace and level. Despite the 100+ degree heat, it was comfortable. It was… pleasant, for once.
And since then, I have been funky ever since. Attending classes 2-3x a week, sometimes 4-5x a week. Taking all classes whenever I can, from Ry's Hot Pilates to Jeff's Ivengar to Lynn's Bikram… whenever I had time to make the drive to Berkeley from Castro Valley, I’d take advantage of it and come to Funky Door. It has really helped me heal through my sudden personal leave from work and improved my general physical and mental health as well.
Would highly recommend. Bring a friend, too!

I went to Funky Door and signed up for a month of unlimited hot yoga. I rented one of their mats and towels and did my first class. 24 hours after my class I woke up with pink eye in both eyes. 48 hours after I came down with a cold.
I work from home and hadn't gone out much that week. I have only had pink eye one other time in my life - fifteen years ago when I went to a music festival. Not surprisingly, I haven't had it since my experience at funky door. I know I got it at their studio from a mat that was not sufficiently cleaned.
I called the studio and informed them of the situation. I was trying to be nice, or at least not upset, on the phone. I offered to pay for the class I took but said I would like a refund on the rest of the $200 payment for the month. The person on the phone was not helpful and said, "why don't you want to come back?" after I told them I had to get antibiotics for a double eye infection. It was wild.
They said they wouldn't do a refund on the phone and that I needed to send an email which I did. The person who responded to my email a week later was also trying to convince me to stay. It's crazy, I wasn't planning on writing a nasty review on yelp, I just wanted my money back and to call it a day. I again offered to pay for the class I took, just asking to be refunded the difference.
After several emails asking them to refund me they just stopped responding. Funky door gets one star. I'll never go there again.

I have been doing hot yoga on and off for over 25 years and Funky Door studio is amazing. In addition to the traditional 26-posture, 90-minute hot yoga class, they offer a variety of other fun and energetic classes such as hot pilates which feels like high interval training in a heated room with funky music to keep you engaged. The people who work there are incredibly friendly, encouraging and helpful. It is a very diverse studio where everyone feels welcome, all levels, ages, sizes, etc. I'm so happy this studio re-opened because when I regularly do hot yoga, the world just seems better and right now that feels essential. And a couple of fun facts: I met my husband in a hot yoga class over 25 years ago and did the series up until five days before having my baby boy who is now 20 and also sometimes practices hot yoga! Here are pictures from 2002 (pregnant and my husband doing yoga with our baby) and me a few months ago in 2022 (20 years later) striking a pose at the beach. This yoga is life changing and this studio is amazing and feels like a second home and family.

I'm 7 months postpartum and this kind of heat assisted stretching and strengthening is really helping me feel powerful and flexible. The staff is friendly, helpful, and welcoming. And I love that there's usually at least one dog to greet you in the lobby.

Funky Door has changed my yoga life! Being a yoga Instructor myself, I am very sensitive to energy and intentions. The teachers and community at Funky Door have been such an inspiration to me and I always feel leaving very strong within myself. Most importantly, they know how to have so much fun! I am super impressed with the music they pair with the classes and I have found something indescribable that has been added to my practice by just being there. I've gone into the building in tears and left smiling or laughing multiple times. Thank-you Funky Door. I support you for life!

I love this studio. I've taken classes at Funky Door over many years, on and off ~ and have noticed a tangible rise in the sense of community since the transition of ownership last year.
For a fairly big studio, it feels close-knit, which takes a conscious effort; but it seems to come naturally to the leadership here. They've created an atmosphere of respect, fun, loving energy.
It's clear that the teachers love their craft and they love to share it with everyone who enters the door. They're skilled, super-accessible, warm... and they magically remember everyone's name!
Great variety of classes, clean and comfortable space, lots of support. Fully recommend!

FUNKY DOOR is the best They have the traditional birkam yoga 90 min classes or 60 mins if your short on time. The environment is chill laid-back, staff is very helpful, friendly & it's a Hella hot fun place to practice. I highly recommend it.

When I was a member of Funky Door before COVID under the previous owner, I was a member of the YMCA too. Now, I've dropped that. I'm getting it all with these guys: Yoga, calisthenics, dance, music, socializing and joy. These are good people, providing good guidance for good clients. Everybody there deserves all good that comes their way. In gratitude, Marshall, over by the 🌈 Frankenstein.

I love this yoga studio. If feels very new and clean with a padded floor that is comfortable while still providing support for balancing postures. The studio provides lockers, complimentary locks, dressing rooms with showers and has an assortment of drinks available. The many classes are convenient and I find a remarkable balance and diversity with regulars, drop-ins, different ages and genders. The teachers all have good vibes and have clearly honed their craft. I've even been to a free posture clinic workshop that was awesome! The music in the lobby gets you pumped and it's just a fun place to be! I usually ride my bike there but when I drive, find that there is plentiful and inexpensive parking just outside. Funky Door rocks, can't wait for my next class!

I joined Funky Door recently, and it's the first studio I've ever commited to having a membership to. The student rate is very good, and although the first class felt very tough, it gets easier every time. I'm excercizing more consistently now and am definitely getting stronger and producing more endorphins.

This place just keeps getting better! After the ownership change about a year ago, I tried this place again and the community is amazing now. They also installed floors that are AWESOME (think very durable but smooth cork of some sort?) and the most important thing is the vibe. Everyone is so kind and there's just a feeling of comfort and kindess between the students/staff that is RARE. Thank you, funky door. <3

I am chiropractor, and I have referred my patients to Bikram yoga since I first came here in 2006. This type of hot yoga is excellent for the body and especially the spine. The new owners are wonderful and have put their hearts into expanding the class options available, with music, yoga props and even hot Pilates. The new flooring (carpets are gone) makes the studio easy to keep sanitized too. We do appreciate the evolving changes!

Took an intro class with friends and the staff was very receptive to new comers and very helpful in aiding us with the process, location of locker rooms, and class etiquette. An affordable intro class ($22) with mats and 3 towels. Nobody made you feel like an outsider and welcomed you with open arms. Nice of the teacher to introduce New comers to the entire class before the session started. First timers advice: shed as much clothing as you can! You sweat! It gets hot in there and they encourage you to do what you currently can. Don’t over push it! You will definitely shed some water weight! Bring extra clothes because I was drenched! I’ll be coming back as my schedule permits! A truly sensational experience for me and my group!

My partner and I arrived late. We wanted to inquire about the next class. When we approached the counter we said hello to one of two women at the desk. One woman met our kindness with kindness, the other was extremely rude and cut us off before we could ask our question. Here's how the encounter played out.
Us: Hello!
One of the ladies: Good morning!
The rude woman: If he's new you can't go in.
We're both well aware of the policies and were put off by this woman's comment. My girlfriend attended class the other day (using a free month certificate she got from one of the instructors) and this same woman was combative about her using it. I'm not sure what's going on with her but it made the space hostile. We left and took a class at Yoga to the People.

An absolutely AWESOME bikram yoga studio! Awesome instructors! Colorful place! Provide mats for purchase! Clean showers... i just wish they had a water filtration system for the students. Its either you buy, bring own, or tap water. Guess I got spoiled by other businesses having available drinking water. 😥

They have a unique atmosphere and are fairly inviting. The floor smells crazy during seated positions. Water is $4 a pop and they don't have a sign saying not to bring a glass bottle... but the woman found a bottle for me to use after I trekked down the street to fill mine for naught. Strict instructor, felt pressured to move past comfort level and risk injury when encouraged to not drink water (it is my first time back in almost 5 years) until the end of the pose... I'm going to drink water when my body tells me, thanks.

I'm happy to see Funky Door'a reviews have gotten better. If any of you remember the previous owners with the dogs...now, that was a place of peace, a fantasic staff, cute lazy dogs, with wonderful owners...and the place didn't SMELL LIKE A** AND ELBOWS!!!! So, is there a new owner? The lady from France is gone sounds like. Yay!!!

This is my FAVORITE yoga studio in Berkeley. The staff is very nice! I love that they don't shut the door on you once class starts. There is a small window at the beginning of the class that you can still enter after the first breathing exercise. Very clean. They have a 6am class on the weekends that is awesome right before work.

Teachers are positive. Showers are clean. Silly paintings set the mood.
I've been going on and off for a while, it really helps organize my life, recover from cycling trips, and detox. If you want it hot as hell, don't put your mat by the door. put it front and center or in that pointy little corner, you will fry. I appreciate that the door opens as the heat gives me nausea, and its nice to have a cool spot in the room. Bikram is almost a contact sport so be careful.
Enjoy.

This is one of the cleanest yoga studios that I have ever been to! I have been to many. Some of the pictures on the walls are as little quirky. If you like that kind of thing, then you will be at home. They also have an incredible 1st month offer. Definitely a great place to sweat yourself to a better you!
