This is hands down my favorite yoga studio! I’ve tried several studios over the years, and none compare to this one. Every teacher is truly a master at their craft. The classes are challenging in the best way and always so much fun. I leave every single session feeling strong, accomplished, and recharged. The community here is also amazing!

I’m so glad I found Funky Door Yoga! The community here is warm, welcoming, and genuinely supportive — it feels like everyone’s rooting for each other. The hot pilates and yoga sculpt classes are tough in the best way possible: you sweat, you struggle a little, and you leave feeling amazing. Every instructor brings great energy and clear guidance, which makes even the hardest sequences feel accessible. Easily one of my favorite parts of living in SF.

I love Funky Door! Great staff, excellent teachers and early morning classes.
I take Hot Pilates weekdays at 6am. It’s intense and completely doable. My first class my only goal was to stay in the hot room but the energy was infectious and I was able to do so much more than I thought.

Funky Door – San Francisco👍
If joy had a location, it would have this address. Funky Door is pure energy — a swirl of color, rhythm, and good vibes that hits you the second you walk in. The staff greet you like old friends, the music has a pulse of its own, and the whole space feels like it was designed to remind you that life’s supposed to be fun.
Whether you’re there to sweat, stretch, or simply recharge your mood, you’ll leave taller, lighter, and probably smiling like a fool😍

Thank you for the welcoming community and great instructors!

This is a gem of a studio. Super friendly staff, great community, super clean, amazing class and instructor. They have towels and mat rentals available as well as showers and they provide you with a lock for your locker. Overall such a great experience, I highly recommend it and will definitively come back on my next trip to San Francisco.

I started 3 months ago and I love this place! All the teachers are fantastic and BRING the energy! Inferno hot pilates kicks my butt every time but I keep coming back for more!

I had an injury back in November and was doing PT. All the teachers were very accommodating and helpful in modifications. I started doing yoga 1 time a week at this studio and saw more progress after a month of yoga than 2 months of PT!

I have a herniated disc in my lower back from an old injury that has randomly flared up every few months for ~10 years, just from sleeping on it wrong or sitting on long flights. After 1 month of unlimited classes at Funky Door in June of 2024 (est. 2x/wk, primarily pilates), I flew to the east coast, and it was one of the first flights in years where my back didn't bother me at all.

Now, between continued pilates practice and starting a bikram practice, I haven't had any flare ups in months. I've been able to lift heavier and train more consistently at my other gym.

5/5 for strong bodies, loud music, and good vibes!!!

Wonderful and intense classic bikram—it was a 60 minute but somehow we managed doubles of at least 75% of the poses—Carl is knowledge, well paced, and the atmosphere is calm and focused. The studio is clean & light filled with good showers and a clean changing room. The front desk went beyond expectations helping me.

I cannot recommend this practice enough for building a strong, healthy body; it has had a loyal following for decades because of the profound physical and psychological benefits.

This place is an absolute nightmare. I recently bought a membership, and I am sure I’ve been scammed. During a Pilates workout, while I was squatting with weights, the owner came up(she was also in the class), took the weights out of my hands, and loudly yelled in front of everyone, “This is not a weighted class!” And she walked away with my weight. I was completely mortified. After the class, she came to me with an attitude, saying, “I’m the owner of this place, you’re not supposed to use weights because it didn’t say it’s a weighted class.”

I’ve been going to Hot Pilates for 15+ years, In every studio I’ve been to, weights are optional, and no one would ever treat a paid customer like that. The owner clearly doesn’t care about her clients, only her ego. She is rude, unprofessional, and extremely humiliating. I’ve took Ry’s class one time, it was a total chaos, the worst yoga I’ve ever practiced my whole life.

The studio itself is dirty and smells awful, and the classes are boring and extremely repetitive, you can clearly feel the struggle with all of their instructors. (I don’t think the owner treats them well either.)

This place is a total waste of money, and the owner’s behavior is beyond disrespectful. Save your time, money, and sanity — do NOT come here!

Amazing yoga studio! I came here on a visit to SF and will make it a habit to come back every time I visit. The instructor was amazing and really took time to explain proper form, even for a yoga novice that only does yoga once a week like me. The ambiance is also incredibly cool with a lot of cool mural art! Can’t recommend it enough.

Amazing place! I cross train here when I’m not at boxing classes, when I want focused work on my metabolism, spine, core, focus, balance and flexibility and more—my movement feels more fluid and precise every day. The pilates classes push me to find and refine new details I would otherwise neglect in my body, and the yoga is the best I’ve ever gone to, after 10+ years practicing! The staff are experts in their craft and put in extra time and effort to help participants improve their craft, inspiring and befriending them one step at a time. Funky Door brings a fresh style and joyfulness that brings you to find new rhythms in your body, giving you insights into places you can grow beyond your current plateaus. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and you know there is a real community alive and well.

Bikram yoga and Pilates at Funky Door is the best! The facilities are top notch (the yoga room floor is like a rubber mat, not carpet), and the sound system and lights transform the space. Best hot yoga in sf 🥵💕

Distinguishes itself from other studios through:

1) the teachers — technical know-how, they emphasize the posture’s intended impact/improvements to the body. It’s also nice to see them attend each other’s classes and practice among students. They also really go out of their way (carl, Janis, jeff, murel, ry — I haven’t been to the others’ classes yet but I’m sure they’re fabulous) to make sure everyone is well set up before class (towel, props, take off your socks, etc). So if you’re new, you won’t be abandoned and awkward in your first classes ☺️
2) the culture — it’s intense and hardcore, but also funny and gentle. Nonjudgmental, friendly, and open minded
3) clean changing rooms with shower
4) big practice space — ample natural light, hot temp, non slip floor (as opposed to hardwood or rubber mesh or carpet)
5) friendly and warm staff who make you feel seen!
6) consistent scheduling of 90 and 60 min bikram, with Pilates and other hot yoga also
7) cute dogs sometimes
8) bangin playlists in the lobby when you enter and exit 🙌
9) the funky art!!!!

Guaranteed to improve mobility, humility/self love, mental & physical strength 🫶 it will also challenge your ego and need for control, and help embrace discomfort.

Having moved to SF 6 months ago, this place is a big part of my new community!

I have been coming to Funky Door Yoga since 2012 and while it has always been an amazing studio, the new ownership (Lynn, Ry, Carl, Jeff) have taken this place back to one of if not the best hot yoga and pilates studios in the world. I have been to studios in Tokyo, Amsterdam, Rome, London, Vancouver BC, Key West, New Orleans, Ann Arbor, Portland, Albuquerque, Santa Clarita, and Las Vegas and nothing really even compares. I would say the studio in Amsterdam was second but it still isn't even close.

I really think you should do YOURSELF the favor and come take a class a Funky Door Yoga not only will you be impressed with the studio but even more impressed with yourself after the class.

This is FUNking AWESOME hot yoga and Pilates, San Francisco! Treat your mind, body, and soul to classes at Funky Door. Oh. Em. Gee. Every class is great, and every teacher is highly skilled, friendly, fierce, and motivational. The folks who come to roll out their mats here are quickly forming a fun fitness community.
Warning, though: this is NOT your grandma’s yoga studio! Unless your grandma is a badass deep-house diva who wants to build muscle, improve balance, strengthen her core, and shout “WERK ET!” while doing it. Some classes have deep-house beats, some are quiet, some feature Led Zeppelin during savasana, and some have a mix of Iyengar and Vinyasa flavors. They are all HOT. And, well, hawt at times, too 😛. You MUST check out this unique and high-spirited studio! I dragged my 57-year-old flabby self through their doors in February, and I’m hooked. Some weeks, I’ve gone six days in a row, feeling nourished and empowered by every class I’ve taken. I LOVE it, and I think you will, too. This is old-school SF reborn—something truly special and transformative. Come experience it on the mat next to me!

I started at Funky Door some months ago. I had no experience with hot yoga or Pilates.

At the first class, I could barely do anything. Afterward, I stumbled home and laid on the floor for an hour. I was convinced that anyone who willingly hung out in a hot room for an hour was unwell.

Against my better judgement, I went back. Then I went again. And again. I went today, I’ll go tomorrow, and I’ll go the day after that too.

Ry, Carl, Sean, and the rest of the team take great care to make everyone feel welcome and supported. If you put the effort into showing up, results are guaranteed.

I tried around 5 other hot yoga studios in SF, just looking for the right fit and Funky Door is my spot! The vibes are fun, bright decor, upbeat music, and the staff is always happy and welcoming. It is literally the hottest room in town!

Seriously, though……my yoga practice has improved so much since starting at Funky Door. I try to take as often with art as possible, but all of the instructors are great! Every correction has been so helpful and they are happy to give you a personal modification to get closer to getting the pose!

Funky Door is AMAZING! This place has changed my life and how I feel about myself.

In a number of months, it has helped me to truly transform the relationship I have with myself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

I started attending in July 2024, and within the first month, I saw noticeable results.
This kept me coming back for
Side note:
I’ve always struggled with maintaining a consistent workout routine
Yet, the changes I experienced in my energy levels and mood gave me the motivation to stick with it.

At first, I committed to attending 2-3 times a week and made a commitment to hit that goal no matter what. Over time, I increased my attendance and built up stamina and strength, which has made the workouts even more rewarding.

The first few classes were the most challenging. And the staff and group moral picked me up.

During the holiday months (October through December), they offer a “Hot Room Challenge,” and I’ve committed to attending five classes a week.

I love this challenge because it helps me stay focused during a time that can often be stressful.

It keeps me from worrying about things like:

• Did I exercise enough today?
• Will this extra serving of mashed potatoes affect my progress?
• Will I have enough energy for weekend plans?

I’m incredibly grateful for the staff and the structure that Funky Door provides.

If you’re thinking about yoga, Pilates, etc, I highly recommend giving it a couple of weeks—you just might find it changes your life, too!

Thank you funky Door🙏🙏🙏

Funky Door Yoga at SF has truly surpassed my expectations! With a wide variety of class times, it’s easy to fit sessions into my schedule. The studio is always clean and has a fun, welcoming atmosphere that makes each visit enjoyable.

Having attended for about four months, I’ve already noticed significant changes in my body, mind, and spirit. I started with limited experience and physical capacity, but thanks to the wonderful instructors, I feel like I’m improving every day. They are always there to guide me, ensuring I practice correctly and grow at my own pace.

The instructors at Funky Door Yoga are incredibly passionate, patient, caring, fun, friendly, and professional. I truly feel like I’ve found my new home here. I feel so fortunate to have discovered this amazing yoga studio; it has become my happy place.

Thank you to all the teachers/instructors, and staff—you are the best!

A daily dose of the hot room is essential to my training!

A year and a half in, the great instructors and studio are helping me turn a big ship. I've been (slowly but surely) up-leveling my strength and wellness. Regular bikram and hot pilates have helped me get stronger, more flexible and train for the hardest days on my bike. June 2025 will be my 10th (and final) AIDS Lifecycle riding 545 miles from SF to LA and my FD practice are as key to endurance cycling as time in the saddle. Thank you, Ry, Lynn, Jeff, Carl, Lisa G, Kat, Janis, Anne, Jocelyne and the great team who help me do what I do. The community is fab too. I couldn't get it done without the inspiring neighbors on the left and right side of my mat.

Funky Door Yoga is back and better than ever. The studio feels like you're like walking into a yoga nightclub complete with mood lighting, a disco ball and graffiti style artwork. No stinky carpet, they have rubber floors, plenty of bolsters, blocks, and hand towels and also offer mat and towel rentals. The bathroom is remodeled and bright, with two showers. They have cubbies and lockers too. All of the instructors and staff are wonderful - my personal favorites are the owners Lynn, Jeff and Ry. The traditional Bikram 90 class is great, and they also offer hot pilates and a Bikram style 60 min class set to music. Whether you're new to yoga or an old pro, this is by far the best hot yoga studio in SF!

Can't think of a better way to take care of my mind and body, all while having SO MUCH fun. No snobby or too-serious gurus here. Bad day? Go to funky door. Good day? Funky Door. The studio is amazing. However, I had an interesting experience. On the website it says the first class is free, and on another page through the website it says first class is $10. However, I was charged $35 dollars for my first class. The host asked for a form of payment upfront but charged my card after the class without letting me know that she was charging me $35. I really wanted to love this studio, but as a first timer this is not making me want to come back. I have had multiple friends who have gone and gotten their first class free. After being asked if i would come back I told the host that I lived in the sunset so it wasn't very feasible for me to get a membership considering I live so far away. They charged me after I said I was not interested in a membership.

Update: let me be explicitly clear that my review was for a singular teacher at this studio. The owner, their wife, the space, and the studio are all inviting, friendly, and caring. Due to my experience, they reached out to me and did their best to resolve the situation by offering free classes as well as having multiple internal discussions about the teacher and how to improve the environment moving forward. While I don't want to harm their business and know there are plenty of kind hearted people at Funky Door, I do not feel good about removing the review altogether in case someone else experiences what I did. For that reason, I am leaving my original review up as a warning to others who may not want to risk that type of class environment with that particular instructor. I am confident other classes are much more enjoyable and less authoritative. I wish them well as a community and appreciate their consideration and dedication to understanding my experience. Onward.

As others have mentioned on their Berkeley page, Jeff made me never want to return to this place.

I was thrilled to try out this studio and walked in wide eyed and bushy tailed. I met the instructor and shook his hand. I chose my spot by the mirror as I am double jointed and have issues with over extension. I was ready!

I will skip to when the uncomfortable feeling began. The instructor singled out multiple people for their poses using phrases like 'what the heck are you doing?' 'what is that?' and 'wow you've really screwed the pooch' ... tone is important here and it was hardly jovial remarks. Each time he walked over to the person and *loudly* called out their posture. There is a way to give direct feedback on form in yoga that is constructive but still helpful and compassionate. Jeff's style is clearly to call attention and embarrass. Noted.

I started to feel more self conscious as he made his rounds across the room. As he got closer to me he started staring and noticed I was doing an 'eagle hug' with my arms, crossing them across my chest instead of the traditional eagles arms. He called this out, and asked why I was doing that. I said that was what works for me because the other pose hurt my wrists. He ordered me to do it. I did, and he said 'see' and then rolled his eyes to another student as he walked away. It was then that I stopped being able to focus on my practice and started feeling the embarrassment set in.

Jeff then told everyone to leave their mat (which for the record is a huge no-no in traditional bikram, a sharp juxtaposition and hypocritical jump from his focus on 'rules') telling us to take our (sweaty) towel and put it on the mirror and push into the pose. I did not want to put my personal sweaty towel on the mirror as we still had 60 minutes left and I didn't want it to be soiled with whatever was on the mirror. Jeff did *not* like this. He marched over, called me out, didn't like my polite request to stay on my mat and focus on the traditional pose, and said he would bring me one of his towels. For the record, I also didn't want to 'push' against the mirror because I didn't think it would be helpful in my practice and balance. Any diversion was viewed as an 'insult' to the instructor who took them personally. Each time someone modified, it was met with criticism and singling out. My mat is one of the only places that still feels 'safe'. Not here.

Final straw was when I started into my triangle pose with a reduced stance. I saw the mirror close by but I didn't move because I was conscious of mine moving blocking the view of others. He then said 'You will do what I say' in a tone that was chilling. He was clearly angry and his authoritative tone had no place in a yoga studio. I said I was leaving and he stood there holding the door open until I did. I left in tears, ashamed, and disappointed.

I LOVE Funky Door Yoga!! I've come up here probably 7-8 times since they've opened and taken classes with Jen, Ry and Jeff. First, the studio is actually hot so you WILL leave sweating... remember to drink a lot of water before and during class. I used to go a lot to Funky Door back in the day, and Ry was always my favorite teacher. It's incredible to witness the transformation and complete makeover that she's given the place. The new vibe is absolutely fantastic. I've been on the lookout for a hot pilates class in the city, and none have quite matched up to the quality of this one at Funky Door. I can't say enough good things – it's a solid 10/10 experience with top-notch playlists, great showers, amazing instructors, and the perfect level of heat. Trying out one of these classes is a decision you won't regret. Personally, I'm hooked on the Friday class mixtape, a sweaty and fun hour of Bikram accompanied by the best music. Highly recommend checking it out!
