Grassroots is a fantastic crossfit gym. I'm a middle-age woman who didn't touch a barbell until I was 50 and have done crossfit in several different gyms over the past 5 years. Grassroots is the best gym by far. The warm up and stretches are given the time they deserve and the coaches are always happy to suggest modifications based on my abilities. The other members of the gym are very welcoming and everyone is there to have a good time while getting fit. I highly recommend this gym!

Grassroots is hands-down my favorite gym in the East Bay — and honestly, one of the best I’ve experienced, even compared to others in San Francisco. The programming here is incredibly well-balanced: it emphasizes mobility, safety, and smart strength training, which I really appreciate.
I first started coming here right after the pandemic, during a time when I was craving both structure and a like-minded fitness community. After trying out a few different gyms and classes, I finally landed at Grassroots — and I’ve stuck with it ever since. The community is welcoming and genuinely supportive, and the class sizes are just right — it never feels overcrowded or overwhelming.
One of the things that truly sets Grassroots apart is how diverse and inclusive the community is. It’s easily the most diverse CrossFit gym I’ve ever been to — in terms of ethnicity, age, and fitness level. I’ve seen everyone from high schoolers to people in their 70s working out here, which is incredible. Whether you’re brand new or a longtime athlete, everyone is made to feel welcome. It’s a really special environment to grow in.
The coaching staff is fantastic. Big shoutout to Charlene, the head coach, who has been instrumental in helping me push past plateaus and refine my movement. Her attention to detail, encouragement, and deep knowledge have made a big impact on my progress.
On top of all that, Grassroots is one of the most affordably priced CrossFit gyms in the Bay Area. It’s honestly amazing that this level of thoughtful programming and coaching is made so accessible. It really speaks to the gym’s mission to make high-quality fitness available to everyone.
Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned athlete, Grassroots has something valuable to offer. Can’t recommend it enough!

I was a member at Grassroots CrossFit for a year and loved everything about it. As a coach-owned gym, you can feel how much commitment and work that Kris and the coaching team (shout out to Patrick and Vini) put in to make sure every member feels welcome and gets the best out of the work out regardless of their familiarity with crossfit. The box is airy, spacious, and well equipped. And other members are really nice too! Highly recommended!

I’ve been coming to Grassroots CrossFit for about four months now and it’s easily the best gym community I’ve ever been a part of. The coaches are stellar and the members are super supportive. And everyone is insanely strong.
I’ve grown so much in a short time and learned to push myself beyond what I thought I could do. 10/10 would recommend.

Grassroots CrossFit is an outstanding CrossFit gym in Berkeley, California that I've had the pleasure of training at. The coaches are not only knowledgeable but also incredibly nice and supportive. Their expertise truly shines through in the well-thought-out workout programs.
Kris, the owner, is not only friendly but also an excellent coach. He's always ready to answer questions and provide guidance. And it's not just Kris; I had the opportunity to meet other amazing coaches like Patrick, Charlene, Vini, Jasmine, Kelly, and Alex. Each of them brings a unique coaching style and technique, ensuring that you learn various aspects of CrossFit, from strengthening to gymnastics and conquering the challenging WODs.
One of the standout features of Grassroots CrossFit is their limited class size, with a maximum of 14 people. This is perfect, considering the gym's size, as it ensures everyone has enough space to move around safely and effectively during the workouts.
The gym's equipment is of high quality, and it's clear they invest in providing the best resources for their members. They offer a range of membership options, allowing for good discounts with longer commitments. The pricing is fair, especially when you consider the exceptional coaching and the small class size, which ensures individual attention.
A fantastic bonus at Grassroots CrossFit is the 30-minute yoga session offered once a week, led by Joy. It's a great way to complement the intense CrossFit workouts with some relaxation and flexibility training.
Overall, Grassroots CrossFit is a top-notch CrossFit gym that caters to all levels of fitness enthusiasts. If you're looking for a welcoming community, expert coaching, and well-designed workouts, this is the place to be.

I a wonderful time with Grassroots for the year I lived in the Bay Area. I was new to CrossFit and not only were the coaches great teachers, they were super friendly, patient and encouraging. In fact this place helped me to build a long term regular exercise habit for the first time in my life. Thank you so much Kris, Patrick, and Vinnie!

Whatever your question is, the answer is GO TO GRASSROOTS!
I spent two lovely years in Berkeley and have Grassroots to thank for amazing friends, improved fitness, and tons of fun. Big shoutouts to the 6am/7am crew!
COMMUNITY
This is by far one of the best groups of people I’ve met. Everyone is so kind and welcomed me from day one, and it was so cool getting meet a diverse group of people outside my daily circle.
FITNESS
I can’t say enough great things about the coaches! They have all taught me so much, and (safely) pushed me to work harder and keep showing up.
JUST SHOW UP
Grassroots has an awesome variety of ages, athletic backgrounds, and levels of crossfit experience. This is NOT a crazy ultra-competitive gym, but a supportive culture full of people looking to help each other wherever they are in their health journey.
Although I only stopped coming due to a move, I can confidently say I would come back in heartbeat if we ever end up back in the east bay, and I can only hope to find another community like this one!

As a physical therapist who has been a part of numerous gyms and their communities I can tell you first hand that Grassroots is the gold standard for what other gyms should be modeled after. They put their members above all else and make sure they do what's right for them, always. Their onboarding process and programming is phenomenal and their coaches are so enjoyable to work with as well. More so, the owners of the gym (Melissa and Kris) are super responsive and overall just great people. If you're someone who is thinking about joining a gym, but worried about getting hurt or it just simply not being the right fit, give Grassroots a shot and I promise you won't be disappointed. Thanks Kris and Melissa and the rest of the Grassroots family for all that you do for the community! Keep up the awesome work!

Grassroots CrossFit gym has a positive vibe and welcomes all adults from every age range. I started two years ago with zero experience of knowing any barbell techniques. All the coaches are very positive and helpful always trying to bring out the best in everyone’s exercises and experience. If you’re ready to try crosssfit or wanting to find a gym that incorporates good barbell techniques, positive environment and encouraging coaches this is the place that has all of it.

I don't think this is needed but it can't hurt. I switched from the YMCA to GRCF's open gym and i have to say it was a solid choice that I wish i had made so much sooner because I was wasting my time at the YMCA. I can't speak to anything crossfit because I don't do Crossfit, only Olympic Weightlifting programing with Cal Strength but this gym is a solid choice for any independent programming you might want to do. The open gym is never usually very crowded except for like Saturday and it's always mid day 10am-3pm'ish. They always seem to be getting new equipment like every week. All the members and staff seem really nice, laid back and down to earth which is a shocker given that this is still Berkeley after all, it's not exactly common to have people who don't have a strong opinion or attitude but if you need relief this seems to be the place.
I think the only suggestions i might offer the gym is maybe to get more dumbells in higher weights and possibly upgrade their facility with a closeable door and possibly some kind of HVAC system because the cold and the wildfire smoke were kind of brutal to deal with. An expansion of open gym times would be super awesome too though i realize the classes are an integral part of the Crossfit business model. Otherwise they have anything you could want plus everything you never thought you needed. Thanks GRCF!

I have been in the CrossFit community for over 4 years, visiting dozens of boxes.
I checked out the other gyms in the area including Oakland, Berkeley, Hercules, and East Bay before choosing this one. It is a great gym that shows the traditional values of CrossFit can still persist in a business framework. The coaches, Melissa and Kris, provide close attention to their clients and are knowledgeable on the movements.
This box is comparatively cheaper and very friendly. Rather than answering to a sign at the door that says "do not interrupt," I was immediately greeted by the coaches. The atmosphere is welcoming for people of all fitness levels. I personally came for the Olympic Weightlifting. This box has a plenty of Pendlay and Eleiko competition plates, Rogue barbells, and even jerk boxes. That last item I am sure is more than enough to convince most the oly junkies.

I too have had a very positive experience with Grassroots Crossfit. Yes the classes are small but Melissa is consistent in giving everyone personalized attention whether you want it or not. I have been doing crossfit since February and belonged to another gym. It became very clique and big and it lost the customer service aspect which is one of the most important things that I expect especially when laying down a chunk of cash every month. Grassroots is cheaper, custormer service focused and a very good deal compared to other crossfit gyms. And Melissa and Kris are very open and very friendly. You almost have to beg them to take your money. I highly reccommend this gym to all who are looking for a great experience.
