Great gym experience, came from out of town and dropped in. Dave was a great help to me and getting adjusted and answered all of my questions. All of the members were friendly and made my workout 10x better. Next time I’m in the area will be training here for more than a day

This Gym is amazing!!!! I came out for a competition that’s hosted here and just love the place. Huge outdoor space full of strength and strongman equipment, there’s a bunch of arm wrestling equipment and benches inside. Perfect set up to get strong. 💪🏽

This gym holds a special place in my memory. I trained here years ago. By far the best gym I have been a member of. It is an open-air gym - the kind of place where you feel the sun, hear the weights hit the ground, and actually feel like you’re training. There’s no corporate gloss here - only solid equipment and serious lifters. It stayed open through Covid giving me space to stay strong physically and mentally. Felt nostalgic and wanted to write a review.

Incredible strength gym! Fully stocked with everything you could ever need and more. Amazing place to train if you’re a strength athlete or just someone looking to get stronger. Dave the owner is a great guy and probably the most knowledgeable person I’ve ever met when it comes to lifting, nutrition and conditioning.

I wish I had found Grinder Gym earlier!!! What a tremendous community, I felt welcome when I first stepped foot into this gym. The gym is very well-equipped for whatever flavor of strength-related training you wish to accomplish.
I discovered Grinder Gym while aspiring to compete in my first powerlifting meet. Dave DePew was so friendly and welcoming on day one. Very soon, he took me under his wing and after training with him for only 4-5 months, I was on the platform at my first meet and PR’d on all three lifts with exceptional results.
I’m so grateful to have found Grinder Gym and to have trained and learned from Dave. I would highly recommend checking out this gym for anyone at any skill level or if only for the daily grind. It has a wonderful community of routine and new patrons, as well as outstanding and well-maintained equipment. There is plenty of opportunity and a wealth of knowledge living here in order for you to walk out better than when you walked in!

Great gym. Great community of lifters. The gym has a ton of strongman tools, and plenty of squat racks. In my year+ training here, only 2 times I wasn't able to immediately hop on a rack.
There are tons of implements and grips; atlas stones, armwresting equipment but also a good number of machines and pulley systems. There was never a time I needed something they didn't already have but many times they had way more than I needed.
The community is great and Dave is awesome. If you're just starting your journey, talk to Dave he can get you on one of his excecise programs and if you're looking for a trainer, plenty are available.
There are also a number of competitions hosted here. I didn't compete but it was fun to spectate.

I've known Dave DePew for over 15 years. Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to make it to his gym. Finally, for the United States Grip Sport Championships, I was able to get there and I could not believe how awesome it was. The video clips don't do it justice. The gym is huge with multiple cages, multiple benches, platforms, an endless supply of dumbbells, and every bodybuilding machine you could ever want. Not only that, Grinder Gym has an arm wrestling section, a Grip Sport section, a Strongman section, a full selection of bands, chains, probably two dozen different barbells, bumpers, calibrated weights of all sizes, ropes, and more. I think what sets Grinder Gym apart from most gyms is the fact that a decent amount of his equipment, such as dumbbells and mobile adjustable benches, sits outside in the fresh air, giving the option for outside training. Most of the Strongman gear is outside, including his tires, stones, Conan's wheel, and much more. My write-up can't do Grinder Gym justice. You've got to see it for yourself. In closing, this is a great gym for any lifter and it doesn't matter if you're brand new to lifting, or if you're a multi-year veteran. This is the place for you and you will love it!

If you’re a strength athlete & you haven’t seen this gym, there’s a void in your life that just won’t be filled- bar none. With more atlas stones & strongman equipment than most gyms have plates- Grinder gym is THE place to be. Super cool owner, huge amount of space indoors & outdoors, people of all orientation & skill level welcome and not a single lunk alarm in sight- this place makes me wish I lived in Ca instead of Pa. Thank you for hosting the 2024 national grip sport championship, I was in awe as soon as I saw the place & I leave with some of the best memories of my lifting career thanks to you! You’ve set a new standard of what I consider to be an incredible gym, one that will likely never be beaten !

Grinder Gym is a professional athlete meant for lifters at all levels. It is the only gym in San Diego which you are able to train a plethora of sports to include Arm lifting, Strongman, Arm wrestling, MAS wrestling, Powerlifting, and Body Building. Dave Depew is the owner and a professional in his field. He ensures a friendly, clean, and organized environment. He will help you with whatever you need pertaining to the gym. To the beginner athlete, do not be intimidated by the monsters in the gym. Everyone in that gym will stop to cheer you on in whatever big lift you are doing. We all want to see everyone become their best versions.

Grinder Gym is the best gym. Don't be fooled by its marketing for only be ming about this thing or another, Grinder Gym's staff can help you towards your fitness goal no matter who you are or where you are on your physical health journey. They aim to meet you where you are with personable and relatable stories of struggle and success. I am someone who is pretty senstive to the gym-bro mentality and I think the owner, Dave sensed that apprehension immediately, and instead he welcome me in eith open arms. Literally, bear hugged me. I'm a big guy, and someone making me feel small is something I am definetely not used to. But I felt the love and support in that moment which is why I continue to have Grinder Gym in my thoughts and fixture in my healthcare routine. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

Perfect gym for anyone starting out in strength sports! I came to Grinder Gym interested in training for powerlifting but had no experience in the sport. I was initially very nervous to come to a strength gym as a beginner, but immediately entered the most welcoming and inclusive gym environment I have experienced. Everyone at Grinder Gym is eager to support all other members. Dave, the owner, is incredibly supportive. When I told him I was interested in powerlifting but had no experience, he coached me for four weeks to ensure I had a solid foundation and then made me a 12 week training program free of charge. As a student who did not have the financial means to afford this level of coaching, this generosity is more than I could have ever imagined receiving at a gym. I highly recommend Grinder Gym for anyone interested in strength sports.

Love this gym!! From the moment I got there with the heavy metal music playing in the background to the sound of the steel plates hitting the floor as someone was deadlifting 500lbs I knew this was the gym I needed to be at!! Great customer service and easy to sign up, equipment was exactly what I needed with plenty of heavy weight and dumbells I knew I had to set a goal to reach because I wasn't ready for the 150lbs just yet. Friendly environment and people training for everything from bodybuilding and powerlifting, to crossfit and just the everyday hard-core gym enthusiast like myself, this is THE place to be!

There is no other gym/bootcamp/fitness program like Grinder Gym. Dave DePew has created an amazing environment for people that want to lose weight, improve their health and get in incredible shape. Everyone at Grinder Gym, clients and trainers, are friendly and become your accountability partner to achieving your fitness goals. The classes are always challenging, but setup so that first timers can join and easily fit in with people that have been going for years. After losing 65lbs and getting down to 5% body fat on the Grinder I took a break. Big mistake. Now I'm back to get in shape again.

I was initially intimidated to check this place out since I’m not a big lifter. Wondering if or how I’d fit in, I took a chance, mustered up some courage and walked my petite 5ft 3inch frame through the door. I was greeted by what I then thought was a Viking, but turned out the be Dave, the most gentle giant you’ll ever meet (gosh I hope he doesn’t mind me calling him that… :) ). Anyway, Dave and the rest of the community was so welcoming. It’s all about putting your best effort in, not about how much you can lift. I had an event coming up and very specific aesthetic goals. Dave helped me develop an achievable but ambitious plan to get there and get there we did! Working with him got me in the best shape of my entire life. His knowledge and experience is unrivaled. Plus he’s just a super badass Viking!

I discovered Grinder Gym about a year ago, and it is easily my favorite gym that I've been to. Due to family/work/commute reasons, I still mostly workout in my home gym and supplement with trips to Grinder, especially when prepping for a competition, but I wish I could workout here regularly. They do offer a nice option for people in a similar situation to me by selling 10-packs of day passes rather than requiring a regular membership.
Despite my very part-time status at Grinder, I've found the community extremely welcoming, including showing me around the gym when I was new, giving training advice, and making friends (not least of whom is Rogue, the sweetest gym dog you'll ever meet).
My focus at Grinder has primarily been strongman, and I certainly don't know of any other gym in San Diego that comes close in terms of community and equipment. Besides strongman, I've also seen plenty of powerlifting, bodybuilding, and general fitness.
There is a substantial amount of equipment at Grinder (I surely haven't used and couldn't name all of it), split between both large indoor and outdoor training areas, which give the gym a great atmosphere overall. To highlight some of the equipment:
- A huge selection of bars, including power bars, deadlift bars, squat bars, and weightlifting bars, as well as an ample variety of specialty bars including: axle, SSB, spider bar, swiss bar, bamboo bar, and trap bar (plus others I'm forgetting).
- A large selection of power racks (indoors and outdoors) as well as monolifts and competition benches.
- A huge amount of standard cast iron plates plus a smaller inventory of calibrated kilo plates.
- A wide variety of dumbbells and kettlebells.
- Tons of machines.
- Most importantly, lots of awesome strongman stuff: Logs, circus dumbbells, yokes, frames, farmers handles, wagon wheel plates, silver dollar deadlift apparatus, kegs, sleds, metal Husafell replica, Conan's circle, sandbags, and a huge variety of atlas stones (all the way up to 500lbs plus four different loading platform heights available).
Beyond training at Grinder, I have also done two competitions so far (a powerlifting competition last July and Static Monsters last October) along with a strongman competition coming up in April. Both competitions have been a lot of fun for me and very well run, and I am quite excited to continue doing them in future. There is a good sense of camaraderie with everyone cheering each other on, and even giving advice to one another. At Static Monsters, I actually got technique advice from one of the spotters after failing my second log attempt that enabled me to get it on my third attempt.
Lastly, I have done a couple of one-on-one training sessions at Grinder for specific lifts:
- Dave (owner of the gym) provided a coaching session on atlas stone lifting, including the use of tacky. This is one of those strongman lifts that is difficult to figure out completely on your own, and our training session was invaluable for getting me up to speed on stone lifting and also a lot of fun. We managed to get in a few reps of a 330lbs stone by the end of the session, which is honestly more than I was expecting and really exciting for me personally after having watched pro strongmen lift atlas stones so many times.
- Shane, a strongman coach and active member of the strongman community at Grinder, provided a coaching session on circus dumbbell clean and press. While I had a handful of training sessions with the circus DB already, I was really struggling to figure out a good technique, especially with this being on of the most technique-dependent events in strongman. During my session with Shane, I quickly set a 15lbs personal best, and equally importantly feel a lot more confident in my training going forward. I think I've been given the foundation to continue pushing past the personal best set during the session.

THE BEST Powerlifting, Strong Man, Arm wrestling, and any strength sport gym.
This gym has it all, any bar you can think of, a variety of machines to cover each part of your body. Probably the most accessories you could think of, from grip accessories to workout accessories.
Plenty of heavy duty power racks, professional bench press’s, mono lifts, and any heavy duty machine you can think of.
There are plenty of sets of dumbbells, regular standard plates, kilo plates, bumper plates, you will never be in shortage.
For strong man there are HUGE variety of stones, logs, platforms, axles, barrel press yolk bar, farmers walk, and more!
It doesn’t matter if you are a pro or a beginner, this place comes with friendly attitude and everyone is happy and willing to help.
If you are interested being competitive, Grinder offer a variety of competitions throughout the year, like strong man, powerlifting, arm wrestling, and plenty of fun odd and ends competitions, like strict curl, grip, deadlift, trap bar and more, all in a friendly and helping attitude.
The indoor-outdoor concept offers an enjoyable lifting environment when other gyms feels cramped and muggy.
I strongly recommend Grinder Gym for anyone looking for a good lifting experience in an awesome gym environment, and an endless of options for any workout need.

The things I love most about this gym - the community, the equipment selection, the atmosphere, the location. This gym is half indoor, half outdoor, which gives you the freedom to decide where to do your workout depending on how you're feeling. I never have to wait for a machine or weights like other high volume gyms which is super convenient, especially if I'm on a time crunch. I had the pleasure of joining Grinder Gym in San Diego, and it has been AWESOME. This gym stands out not just for its comprehensive strength-focused facilities but also for its warm, inclusive, motivating community. It's a rare find—a safe, non-judgmental space where everyone, beginners and elite athletes alike, feels welcome.
The heart and soul of Grinder Gym, owner Dave DePew, is a testament to the gym's ethos. Dave is one of the most kind-hearted, knowledgeable, and helpful individuals I've ever encountered. His passion for fitness, strength sports and dedication to his members' well-being is evident in every interaction. Moreover, all the trainers here are experts in their fields, always ready to guide, motivate, and inspire.

Good environment for the athlete who wants to take his/her performance to the next level or for the hardcore gym goer who just wants to get STUPID STRONK!! especialized top of the line equipment, bands, chains, every specialty bar you could want (and some you didnt know you wanted) strongman stones, yokes, viking press, AND an outside yard if you want to tan the cheeks while you lift! The owner is super down to earth and just one look at him you can tell he USES his equipment! Amazing place, 5 stars!

The one star reviews are so strange. It’s one thing to say you don’t like the old school iron paradise/maybe jail yard vibes in comparison to trendier content gyms, but to suggest that anyone here is anything but above and beyond welcoming is bizarre. The three people who work here are incredibly nice, once you get over the initial shock that two of them could probably break you in half if they sneezed in your general direction. Even after I left the gym, the owner Dave will treat you like family just as he did me. The dude is a giant, jacked teddy bear with the biggest heart, and his similarly yoked young brethren that he hired has all the vitriol of a sour patch kid on his worst days. The woman is just freaking nice, which couldn’t be construed negatively in anyway. Any reviews that say anything else are FAKE—Dave would remove anyone behaving like that with the quickness. This gym is fully in the spirit of all the great old school gyms, which is about respect and community.

Beware… This place is the worst. I now have to purchase 4 bars for my home gym.
In all seriousness, I was 4 weeks in to a new program and was looking for something in San Diego that would allow me not to miss a beat while on vacation. Grinder gym was 6 min away from where we were staying, opened at 6am (I am an early workout guy) and looked like everything I wanted - including some bars I’ve yet to get my hands on but wanted to. They had a week pass (very fair pricing) which was a bonus since I was staying a week.
The owner was extremely kind upon signing up. Other members I spoke to had nothing but great things to say about the gym. Dont expect the glitzy of a typical commercial gym, but I consider that as a huge positive for Grinder. The well loved plates, bare steel bars, indoor/outdoor workout area, just everything about it was excellent.
I moved from la fitness to a garage gym about 7 months ago. I’ve slowly been figuring out what I want to add (specialty bars are next on the list) and I got to try almost every bar I’ve been looking at. I was hoping to like just 1, but I ended up liking all 3 and one more I didn’t even consider but got to play with it at grinder. Thanks to grinder gym, it’s not going to be a gamble when I end up making the purchase.
10/10 would recommend grinder. 10/10 will return every time we are in san diego.

If you’re a serious lifter who wants a place where you can train as hard as you want and not be judged or kicked out because you’re actually TRAINING HARD, this is the place. Specialty bars and strength equipment galore and more grip implements than you could even dream of if that’s your thing. The owner, Dave DePew’s heart and soul went into this place and it shows.
Good people, good energy, train however hard or light as you want. I’ve felt welcome there as what feels like family since 2018.
Probably the coolest gym to stop in for a day pass on your vacation too.

I've been going to this gym since my old one closed during the shut downs and I'm so glad I found it! This place IS MY CHURCH. If you lift or wish to train to compete, look no further, this is THE PLACE. Grinder has free weights, free bars, aerobic equipment, weight machines, cardio machines, crossfit infrastructure, strongman equipment and much more. Grinder has an outdoor area and a garage style set up. They also host lots of competitions themselves. Not only is Grinder gym locally owned but it's owned by Dave Depew, A champion competitor in many strong man and lifting competitions. This gym always has equipment and free weights available. Gone are the days of waiting on the tiny selection of free weights or free bars in a gym overwhelmed with cardio equipment that NO ONE IS USING. The owner here is almost always available to chat with or talk to. Dave and his staff work hard, are skilled and personable and can even set you up with a trainer or workout regimen for a reasonable price! They are also very loyal to long term customers and will always treat you right. Overal, Grinder is definitely somewhere you should consider when looking for a great Gym to workout at.

My wife and I visited SD for a week and we didn’t want to go to a big box chain. Looking at photos online, this place ticked all the boxes. When we arrived, we were happy to see a parking lot and not street parking. Signing up for a day pass was fast and easy. Was never too crowded. TONS of equipment to pursue strongman, powerlifting, bodybuilding, etc. Love how the gym flows from inside to out so you can get some sun while lifting. The only small complaints I can really think of are having some fans outside in the covered patio area would be so nice, and maybe some smaller speakers throughout the place instead of one big one in the middle and maybe some more ab-focused equipment, but that’s hardly something to knock a star off for. We’ll be coming back here for sure the next time we’re in town. Had a couple of great workouts here this week!

Grinder Gym is a very humbling experience. I thought I was in decent shape before signing up this past Sept. I found out the first week that I was far from where I thought I was and where I wanted to be.
There's no cotton candy or fake fluff here, you're going to sweat, you're going to be tired, but you won't quit, all the instructors will make sure of that.
I'm turning my goals into reality finally with the help of the people of Grinder Gym. This is a no frills place, and it will be hard work, but you will see results. It is an encouraging atmosphere and has all the tools you need to take your fitness and/or transformation goals to the next level.

If you want results, this is the place. I've trained at a lot of gyms during my powerlifting career and I'll say this -- you may find bigger, shinier, fancier places out there, but you will not find the knowledge, expertise and experience elsewhere, period. You won't find that clubhouse feel elsewhere in San Diego, period. Dave DePew is one of the most respected trainers in southern California for a reason. When I walked into this gym on day one, it was Dave who greeted me, Dave who signed me up, and it's Dave who chats with me each and every time I go in about what I'm doing, where I'm headed with my goals, and how to achieve them faster. I've been coaching athletes for a long time and ran a competitive powerlifting team. I am a Level 2 CrossFit trainer, certified in powerlifting, strongman and olympic weightlifting by various organizations including USA Weightlifting and USPA. Dave takes me to school on my knowledge regularly. If you enter this gym with a goal and an open mind, you'll get all the help you need and most likely walk away with your goals and others checked off your list, and more goals to keep working on.
Grinder's staff is great as well -- these guys are handpicked by the man himself, so they meet and exceed Dave's high standards. The energy in the group classes is through the roof. As I said, I've been in a lot of gyms -- CF gyms especially, and have not seen camaraderie like Grinder has anywhere else.
Whether you're into group fitness, weight loss, arm wrestling, bodybuilding, powerlifting, strongman, or just a good place to go put some work in, you won't find better than Grinder.

So this is my second time here... Why? Because I know it works. Why did I stop the first time? Because I seriously thought, "Hey I can do this by myself at the $20-a-month gym!" What happened? I had no idea what I was doing, got bored, classes were always full, and finally lost the motivation to go. I ended gaining some weight back, and then some. I knew what I had to do. I called Dave at Grinder again, to kick start my butt back into action. There's something about this place that motivates you, and makes you want to come. They genuinely care about their Grinders and they keep tabs on you. And the best part for me is that it's not a fancy-shmancy gym with strobe lights and sparkling water. They spare you that crap to make their dues reasonable. But I digress. Second time around, not only did I lose the 20 pounds that I gained after, but an additional 30 . Learned my lesson and never going back to that unsaid circus of a gym.

The Grinder Gym is more than an gym. It is truly a fitness and wellness center focused on all areas of fitness health that challenge its members to reach their personal potential. All levels of fitness are welcome which I like, since a lot of gyms out there cater to elite athletes. I have never worked out with or been a part of a community like this. The the staff are so interactive- taking the time to understand your personal goals, any physical challenges (or personal for that matter) and are willing to coach you along the way. This a very supportive community of staff and members with the same mission in mind- to live healthier life styles, improve your physical fitness and see results. Also, the owner, Coach Dave, is more hands on than most- willing to give you personal advice on your goals, how to improve your results, or just give you the encouragement to stick with it and keep coming back! The variety of classes offered keep things interesting. And the members are just as welcoming to new members trying out the gym and learning the how to's of kettlebells, kickboxing and spin. If you are wanting a personalized experience (one you certainly cannot get at the chain 'gyms' out there, then come check it out. You will see why people rave about the Grinder Gym.

I have belonged to many types of gyms...24 hour, Frogs, Corepower Yoga, The Boxing Club but there is something about grinders that I especially connect to. I literally signed up for a membership after my first day. The workouts are not group related meaning you are not relying on someone nor is someone relying on you to move to the next circuit. I never want to feel like I am holding someone back or that someone else is holding me back. You push yourself and so do the trainers. The workouts are so dynamic. One day it is upper body, one day it is core and agility, another day it is total body. You use weights, kettle bells, there are cycling bikes. Basically there is something for everyone and the workouts kick your butt. If you want to get in shape and sculpt your body then this is the gym for you. The workouts are not easy, they are hard...no pain, no gain!!! The trainers are pretty freakin awesome too :) Do yourself a favor and try out a class

I recommend Grinder Gym to anyone who wants to get in the best shape of their life.
I've worked out for years in SD w/ various gyms and personal trainers, but NOTHING and I mean NOTHING compares to the results I've gotten from these classes Dave DePew has created. The classes are tough. In the beginning I couldn't even get through an entire class w/o a break, but I kept at it and now my endurance is through the roof. It's amazing. I feel 10 years younger. I'm doing the 90 day Warfare program right now and I'm half way through. I've already lost 7% body fat and still 6 more weeks to go. It's incredible.
Believe in yourself for 90 days and let Grinder show you how amazing you can be.
All you have to do is show up, follow the meal plan and listen to Dave.
Thank you to all the trainers at Grinder and to Dave DePew for bringing me back to life. I feel renewed and energized.
