Billing is a mess. I’ve had to issue a chargeback from my bank twice in the past 3 years I’ve climbed at the Grotto.
This seems to be a common problem as I’ve seen other complaints online and had a friend share they had an identical issue with billing.
Before I went on vacation, I requested to pause my membership through their online form 30 days in advance of the billing date as required by the gym (which is a ridiculous amount of time and looks like a ploy to squeeze one more month out of someone who hasn’t read the terms). I was still charged for two months at the full $98 when my membership clearly should have been paused.
I was put on an email chain with Nate and Lawson who offered me 2 free months of climbing when I returned. However, I had been debating on switching to another gym and this issue was the deciding factor in ending my membership.
After I denied the offer and requested the money I was owed, they stopped responding to any of my emails regarding getting my money back and completely ghosted me! Not the type of establishment I want to support and I’m much happier at a new climbing gym.

Man where do I begin! The Grotto Gym is home. Amazing community, facilities and really knowledgeable staff with very big hearts. I was diagnosed with Lyme disease a few years ago and could no longer climb for awhile. When it happened I still had about 8 months on my Grotto membership. I reached out to their customer service and got in touch with Maysam. He was able to pause my membership till I was 100%. While I was going through recovery I received an email that my grotto gym membership was going to expire. I hadn't been climbing since my diagnosis so it would be pretty much go to waste.
This man Maysam is truly an angel. I briefed him on the situation and he gave me a full year membership and wouldn't start it until I was 100% healthy. A fellow climber he knew was also diagnosed with Lyme disease so he knew first hand just how terrible it is. I'm still out of commission but can't wait to come back. Maysam thank you so much for all your help and encouragement through this very tough time in my life! You are such a blessing to know. Thank you Grotto gym for creating a safe space where folks can climb, create lasting friendships and be heard!

Edit: please stop calling and texting me. Not okay. Yall are handling a three star review, like, possibly the worst way I can think of. I never asked for anything that you offered me for free and I don’t owe you a glowing review that wouldn’t describe my experience. Wildly inappropriate actions on your part.
The kilter board needs some serious refinement. The thing is set up completely wrong and has a lot of lights missing. This affects the usability quite a bit. The kickboard is set up too low to the pads and the top row of feet are oriented incorrectly. Setting in the gym kinda goes between ok and frustrating. Grades are inconsistent between areas/sets. Kids are running around everywhere, always. Employees are all really enthusiastic and accommodating though. The people who climb at g1 are a lot friendlier than g2 also.
I’ve left frustrated more than satisfied more often than not. I don’t think I’m right for this gym and can’t afford the membership to just board climb on a broken board.

Went to Grotto Climbing & Yoga yesterday with my kid and I’m so glad we found this spot! Earlier that morning we visited a couple of other gyms, and honestly, the staff there felt kinda robotic and not welcoming.
But Grotto was the complete opposite. Hayden was awesome super friendly, approachable, and gave clear instructions without that “do it this way or else” vibe. He made us feel comfortable right away.
The whole place has a really chill, laid-back Sunday atmosphere. My kid had a blast and had so much fun climbing. Everyone we met was kind and easygoing. Definitely recommend if you want a climbing gym that’s not only fun but also has great people and positive energy.

Update: happy to have Grotto staff address the issue I noticed! Highly recommend this gym 👍🏼
Honestly, I really like this gym and it’s been overall a great experience. I took two stars off because I noticed today at morning yoga that as the yoga instructor walked around the room barefoot her feet kept getting dirtier and dirtier. By the end of the class the bottom of her feet were black. Being the first class in the morning I suppose the staff is not mopping the yoga room after every day. Frankly, this is super gross. The instructors often lead the class with the air off and there is visible sweat puddles all over the floor. I would have just assumed they would be mopping at least once a day. Pretty grossed out by this because that means the left over sweat is getting all over my yoga mat. Very unhygienic. Happy to change my review if this is resolved. As someone who really enjoys the yoga classes, this is a bummer. The rest of the gym has been great, although now I am skeptical of the cleaning practices.

This is the kind of place that is ruining climbing. Bro at the desk couldn’t be bothered to look up from the computer. i was standing directly in-front of him and walked around/past him to leave. He never looked up, never said a word. So, I left without completing the membership I had already paid for on Groupon. Also, seems like they have a recurrent scenario of Groupons being falsely redeemed, I won’t conjecture further on that. I’ve been climbing for over 25 years; it’s become much more popular which I thought was great. But if it means places like Grotto can stay in business, doing business like this, I’m not so sure.

I can’t say enough good things about Grotto Climbing & Yoga! This place has such a great vibe. The climbing walls are well-designed, and there's something for everyone, whether you're just starting out or you're a seasoned pro. I also love the yoga studio—they have a fantastic variety of classes that really complement the climbing. The staff is always super friendly and makes you feel right at home. It’s clear they’re passionate about both climbing and yoga, and it shows in the way they run the place. Definitely a hidden gem in San Diego. I’ll be back for sure!

I wanna give a shout out to the employee Jonathan. He was courteous, kind, helpful, and made our experience awesome! Unfortunately, the bearded owner or manager that was on site was rude and dismissive of my friend and myself while we were there. If it wasn’t for Jonathan, I probably would’ve gave this place two stars.

The best bouldering in SD, but that’s not saying much.
This gym in particular is a bit small with very few amenities. They have the weights and hangboards outside. It’s nice on occasion but it’s separate from everything else so you can’t really connect with the community. Plus when it rains, they become unusable (for the typical human).
The way the set is extremely infuriating. They take down a wall the day before they set it, so if you come in on a Tuesday a wall is completely stripped. Their grading is lazy and all over the place. They had grades then switched to tape. When the colors of the tape look the same (no I’m not color blind but others are) and the first four grades are different colors anyway, why even have the tape? The setters’ job is to put up routes and grade them, not make it difficult for us to know what we’re climbing.
The setting isn’t fun either. When every crux is the last move, it gets old trying to figure out beta by climbing the route 20 times. And sometimes the beta is just to campus or do something tweaky. Not fun. I’m definitely getting weaker because I don’t want to climb.
The only things going for this gym are the yoga classes and the kilter board. However the kilter board is also separate from the rest of the climbing, so it’s pretty isolating.
All of this for $98/month? No thank you.
EDIT: Kilter board is broken. Only half of the holds light up.

I’ve been here a few times over the last year when I come back to visit family, and while I like that they match grades with outdoor grades, I feel like there were so many problems that were just set for taller climbers. Very reachy problems that I (a woman of average height) had to do a lot of dynamic movement for that I just wouldn’t have to do in other gyms. While I like that it can be challenging, sometimes it can seem like somewhat lazy routesetting if the only reason it’s hard is because I have to reach a lot for it. I would love if there was more interesting movement, or different styles of climbs - I didn’t see too many crimpy problems until I got to V4, but there can be ways to incorporate that more. That being said, I’m still giving this gym a 4/5 - great atmosphere, fun vibes, and it’s got some challenging problems.

Tldr: sketchy owners call woman “emotional” and
live up to their reputation of having not paid employees during the pandemic and having not given members a chance to cancel their memberships, and then not giving anyone a refund even though they shut down. Do not recommend supporting them.
The story:
I had a groupon that was incorrectly marked as redeemed. Seemed like a backend issue so i contacted groupon support. They said okay no worries just need confirmation from the gym that you never went that day! Easy.
So i email them, explain the situation, and ask “can i just get a simple confirmation”.
The owner, Matt, replies (i assume he meant to change the recipient to his co-owner) “maysam do not reply to groupon emails we dont do refunds” 🙃😂
So i reply back hey i get it but i just need confirmation from you guys so GROUPON can handle the technical error.
No response so i try again. And again. And finally Matt replies again “do not reply to this email” again to me instead of maysam lol boomer behavior…
So i call. And i find out its matt whos picked up. So i ask him then, “hey i just need the confirmation” and he says i should email billing, theres clearly some miscommunication, we dont do groupon stuff, contact groupon support—and i say again and again, no i did all that, all i need is confirmation from you. And then he calls me emotional.
Lol
Classic move from a beta male — super not cool… sounds like he’d be a beta sprayer…
Anyways so i just emailed groupon support again to update them whats going on bc im def not gonna talk with him again yuck. Like if dealing with this groupon issue is gonna make or break ur business, you gotta rethink ur business model. 🧐
So yeah, highly do not recommend supporting this business. What a shame.

After enjoying climbing here for about 9 months I had to cancel my membership because I was in a motorcycle accident, and was initially frustrated that I was charged again due to not cancelling 30 days before billing date, as if I could have chosen to cancel before my crash. The staff quickly reached back out to me and refunded the month I was charged for that I couldn’t use, seemed to genuinely care about my recovery, and more than made the situation right. Excellent customer experience.

I boulder off/on for the last five years and have visited this location about ten times. I think they have a great variety of routes for different levels of expertise (especially for me as a novice); Ive enjoyed going around to the different walls/sections during a session. Never too crowded. Good value for punches.
Last time I was here I saw a staff member climb in their normal non-climbing shoes (super gross!) which turned me off from coming back. Most times I visit I also end up with mosquito bites.

Welcoming gym, super friendly staff and community. The setting is challenging in general, and good for first timers as well. I'd recommend avoiding the 5pm-8pm hours because it can get super crowded, and the space is a bit small. They usually reset every other Wednesday, so those days are the most crowded. Weights, campus boards, moonboards, kilterboard, spraywall, and yoga are some of the amenities they also have.

Great boulder specific gym!!
Had a chance to climbed there when visiting SD and chatted with the head route setter (forgot to ask his name lol) and really love his setting philosophy. Unlike many commercial climbing gyms that have “soft grades” which protects my fragile ego, this gym’s grade is based on outdoor boulders (at least for the over hang area shown by p2). If you love hard, old school powerful boulder problems with a fusion of big dynamic moves, this is where you should go!!
The only minor complain was the padding. The wall was pretty high but the padding was not as soft as I expected, especially for the corner areas in the over hang wall. Was a little worried if I will get injured if I fall so this is my excuse for not committing.
The price for a single day pass is definitely on the high end, more expensive than other gyms in SD but imo, worth the price!

As someone who has gone to many non-commercial lifting gyms, the Grotto is a clean and tidy facility compared to what I’m used to. We went in as a party of 7 new climbers and the staff was very friendly and helpful. There was a kind older gentleman who may have worked there who gave us tips to improve and made the gym welcoming. The nice lady working the front provided perfect customer service. Communal stretching and massage gadgets were a very nice touch. The bathrooms have lockers and are bigger than other lifting/CrossFit gyms I’ve been to. The space is cozy and the walls are covered in interesting routes. The Grotto is probably the best place to boulder in San Diego.

Great mix of grades and decent size training area. Friendly staff, cutest dog (hi Bear!) and clean bathroom facilities with a reasonable amount of parking. I loved this place while I was there, I even continued to pay through out the pandemic even though I could not go. I’m giving 2 stars because of issues that happened once I asked to cancel because I moved out of SD. I called and informed them that I was moving and needed to cancel. The person said okay no problem and I thought I was canceled. A month later I was charged, so I called again and the person said she was so sorry and she would tell her manager and again no other information given to me. At that point I also emailed them to make sure the membership was canceled, I never got a response and I was charged again. Turns out you must fill out a hard to find form that no one tells you about when you want to cancel.
Update - Matt the owner called and discussed the issues I had with canceling services with them. He was very understanding and did everything he could to make it right.

Grotto hasn’t changed in years and I love that for them. My bro intro’d me to this gym when he was an Aztec and their new location puts my Triton gf and me within biking range to some of the best bouldering on the west coast; the community is top notch and so are the routes!

Grotto has been my favorite climbing gym since I started climbing almost a year ago. The staff is always talkative and helpful, the routes are super fun, and the community is hands down the best in San Diego. You seriously won’t get a sense of community this strong at any other climbing gym. They have routes for all skill levels, and you’ll be the perfect level of challenged at all times. I started off here as a total beginner and never knew what I was doing but:
Maysam, Tony, and Troy, have seriously propelled my skills and technique way past what I’d accomplish on my own.
For those of you who like pros and con lists here you go:
Pros:
-staff
-quality
-cleanliness (other gyms let their holds get slimy and disgusting, not grotto)
-community
-availability
-youth team (they seriously run a strong youth program)
-difficulty
Cons:
-only bouldering (this is a pro for me but bothers other people)
-would be cool if they were open later on weekends
Super sad I’ll be moving away from San Diego, but whenever I visit I’ll be climbing at grotto!

I held my sons 11th birthday party here and all the kids had a blast. Troy did a great job introducing climbing safety and etiquette and, after turning the kids loose to climb, was patient with them when they needed reminders not to get too close to other climbers. The climbing routes are clearly identified, which made it easy for the kids to find routes that were at their level.
Party set up was pretty simple, they provide a plain folding table (definitely bring a table cloth, the table is well worn). They set us up inside due to the higher outdoor temps, but they also set up parties on the outdoor deck when the roll up doors are open and the weather permits. Indoor set up was near the cardio equiptment and a couple people came up to use the equipment while were gathered. It wasn't a big deal and the people were respectful, it was a little awkward. I brought drinks and snacks and was able to keep the cupcakes in the fridge until a good time presented itself to serve them up.
I definitely recommend booking a party here if you have a kid who likes to climb. We will definitely be back to climb on just a normal day.

Edit: I really enjoyed my second visit and have purchased a 1 year membership with Grotto. I will recommend this climbing and yoga gym to friends, and highly suggest you, the reader of this review, give this gym a try.
I came here with a friend to try rock climbing/ bouldering. Front desk associate was very kind. I signed up for a 1 week deal which comes with shoes and chalk for the visit. My friend who has a lot more experience showed me around, then after a warm up we climbed for about an hour. It was a great experience, and a surprisingly hard physical activity, Doing "easy routes" was challenging for me, but also very rewarding. I will be back in my week membership to try the last route which kicked my butt again, but refreshed. I have not decided if I will continue my membership after the 1 week at this point.
The Gym is well maintained, and the staff are awesome. I do not have much to compare to, but for me this is definitely a 5 star place to learn, or advance your climbing enthusiasm. Thank you Grotto for creating an environment where my first experience climbing an enjoyable one.

Route setting was imaginative, challenging and altogether quite different than what I'm used to in other gyms I have visited. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there.

The routes, weights area, yoga classes, and showers are solid and clean. The staff and fellow climbers are friendly too. It is bouldering only so the rates may seem a little high and if it’s the midst of summer the building can get a bit warm. Yet the fact that this gym feels like part of the community and not corporate at all is a big pro!

Grotto is awesome. They've taken care of my students many times over the past few years, and always leave me with a good impression. It's because the ownership/staff/clientele are just plain happy to be there doing what they do. The facilities are well configured, and the range of support and services is impressive. Thank you, Grotto, for making my students happy to try climbing for the first time.

Rafi knows Grotto as my happy place and he learned to climb here. I re-discovered bouldering here after a 10+ year hiatus and found a community. There is no better way to describe how friendly, warm, knowledgeable, and competent every single person is at Grotto. We love it and after a great intro deal are now full-time and my son is on the youth team!

I LOVE THE GROTTO. The more I go, the more I feel like I'm part of a family or community. Every yoga class I've been to has been fantastic. The way they cycle the climbing walls every week makes it so we never get bored with the same climbs. I've exponentially grown as a climber because of The Grotto and I've only been coming for like 3 months, been climbing for 4 years. Positive vibes all around here! Oh and great taste in music, the playlists are rad

Made me feel at home and welcomed into their climbing community, while I was visiting for the week and missing my climbing partners, back home. They have a great setting schedule - new stuff regularly. Great variety of beginner to advanced bouldering. Staff was super helpful - gave me pointers on where to boulder outdoors, in the area. They also rent crash pads! And to top it all off, the yoga classes are dope - they offer classes specific to climber's needs. Love this place. Whenever I'm in town, I'll be coming here.

This bouldering gym is great. The staff is super friendly and accomodating. They reset a wall every week and with 6 walls its a 6 week rotation per wall. Never too busy during the day. They have a gym and yoga classes too.

Ive only visited a few gyms in Socal but this one was one of the more impressive ones that Ive checked out. The problems on the walls were difficult and the walls were a little bit higher than the ones Im used to. Other than that, they had the same things I have found at climbing gyms.
At first I thought the day pass was a little pricey but it wasnt until I walked in and realized they their own shower! Definitely worth the membership if I lived in the area:/

I've visited Grotto Climbing & Yoga early this year on a business trip. It's a nice little bouldering place with great boulders, great people and nice employees. Probably the best in San Diego. Pretty much everything what you would look for in a bouldering gym. I'll definitively visit again if my paths take me to the area of SD.

Great little bouldering gym, good service, staff listens about concerns from gym members. Gym goers are really friendly. They update routes regularly and keep members posted. A variety of gym community events are posted on flyers around the gym. They have a training area in the outdoor area to the side which is useful for strength and power type training. They offer yoga to members which is a plus.
The only concern I have is the lack of air circulation or conditioning during the day, especially with chalk all over the place. I understand the concept of having the big garage door to allow air to come in but it's just not enough in San Diego where it's hot all the time. I'm not sure if it's to conserve their energy bill, maybe because its a relatively new gym but for regular gym goers this is a downside. They have 2-3 small fans in the gym, but it just doesn't work as well. If this was improved I'm sure this will improve the experience of the all climbers who come to this gym.
