Hamabe Dojo is the most professional boxing gym I have been to in the irvine area. Before training in boxing, I practiced Muay Thai. The training at Hamabe Dojo made me fall in love with boxing.
What impressed me most is how much effort coach and members put into keeping the gym clean and organized. It is noticeably more tidy than any other gym nearby. Also, the gym is basically referral-only, so it has a very safe and secure atmosphere.
Coach is strict with me, but i know it comes from a place of responsibility, each session burns me over 700 calories, and I am drenched by the end. Now in my second month of training, I have gotten a great training every time and built a lot of muscle.

The opportunity to train in Hamabe Dojo has been life-altering. I was paying other gyms "boxer-cise" workouts for many years. But, true boxing skills, mind and body; I only learned in Hamabe Dojo. It was difficult to transition from the other gyms but, my body plateaued - I was craving for more. Zero regrets with training in Hamabe Dojo! Thanks, coach!

I've been coming a little over 1.5 years now so this review is overdue.
When I had initially started, I am the type to do a lot of research before committing into anything and had been to numerous boxing gyms but none of them felt right. Most were either "boxer-cise" gyms (focused on cardio but no technique) or mass-production gyms with little self instruction.
This is where Hamabe dojo defers and is truly one-of-a-kind. From the moment you step in, you can already tell it's a tight knit community of supportive members. You will receive a personalized, almost one on one type of instruction from an instructor who is wholly invested in your training and goals. The class is unique in a sense that it consists of all age ranges, from 20-65 years old, who all have different goals which the instructor will help you reach Whether its trying to get in shape or compete, the coach will help you get there.
As a side note about the coach, he is incredibly knowledgeable with boxing and is passionate about teaching. Classes are very challenging, get ready to be pushed harder than you've ever gone. The instructor is great at knowing how to push you further just when you think you're done. The other important thing is that he'll also know when you are mentally or physically tired and therefore at risk for injury. Unlike other gyms where I injured my hand since they gave me little instruction, this coach makes sure I have proper technique therefore minimizes injury. My hands are my livelihood and so any injury at my age (40) will take time to recover, but thankfully no injuries yet after 1.5 year.
When I had first started, I was looking for a way to learn self defense and get in shape but this has evolved into something much more. I've always hated doing any form of cardio, but boxing has been a great way for me to have fun while getting in the best shape of my life. In all, I feel proud to be involved in such a tight knit and supportive community. Although I have much more to learn, I feel more confident than I've ever been.
TLDR; If you're at all curious, give it a try! It might be the best decision you've ever made!

5 Stars – A Hidden Gem for Professionals Looking to Train Hard and Decompress
As a busy working professional in my 30s, finding a space where I can not only train effectively but also feel genuinely welcomed has been surprisingly difficult—until I joined Hamabe Dojo.
From day one, the community stood out. Everyone—whether they’re fresh on day one or seasoned amateurs—is incredibly welcoming and supportive. There’s zero ego in the room, just mutual respect and a shared drive to grow. What surprised me most was how intelligent and accomplished many of the members are. You’ll find software engineers, lawyers, designers, and entrepreneurs all throwing punches and lifting each other up.
Stress relief? This place is unmatched. After a long day of meetings and deadlines, stepping into Hamabe is like flipping a switch. The workouts are intense but fun, and I always leave feeling clear-headed and grounded.
Whether you’re brand new to boxing or have years under your belt, Hamabe Dojo caters to all experience levels. I had zero boxing background when I started, but the structured progression and personalized feedback made it feel accessible without ever being intimidating.
If you’re looking for a gym that pushes you physically, sharpens your mind, and surrounds you with driven, like-minded people, Hamabe Dojo is it. This isn’t just a boxing gym—it’s a community I’m proud to be part of.

My wife and I have been training at Hamabe Dojo for more than two years. The training has been excellent. Each session is challenging and informative. The coaches focus on boxing technique and endurance. The classes always have people with different skill levels, but the coaches know how to organize us and organize the training so that everyone is challenged at their level and progresses. There are beginners all the way up to very experienced boxers who do a lot of sparring. It really feels like a community -- we love it!

Training under the coach at Hamabe Dojo has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had in the workout world. I gained nothing but strength, long lasting stamina, boxing skills and great community.
The gym is very clean, organized and tidy. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. I specially appreciate that the coach focuses on basic discipline such as saying hi to other trainees when you walk in, or treating the communal areas and gear with respect.
The coach creates a motivating space where trainees can truly enjoy learning and growing. I was a total newbie to boxing but the coach was patient and knowledgable, and knew exactly how to make training fun and addictive! It’s my 5th months since I joined the gym and I look forward to continuing. If you're looking for an authentic boxing gym, look no further!

I was interested in boxing and always wanted to learn the craft, but while looking for boxing gyms I noticed most of them were all just "cardio boxing" classes where you don't really learn anything and you just smack a heavy bag for an hour without any guidance.
That's until I stumbled upon Hamabe Dojo. I took one class and I KNEW this was exactly what I was looking for. The coach is very knowledgeable and actually pays attention to your form, bad habits, and weaknesses. He is there to teach you boxing and he genuinely strives to make you a better boxer.
If you join this gym get ready put in some work, because the drills/exercises can get pretty challenging. Your stamina, core, and strength will be put to the test, but they are all meaningful exercises. Day by day you notice that your jabs are a little faster, your steps a little quicker, your cross is a little stronger.
All students in the class are very welcoming as well! The seasoned students often give me pointers during drills, and correct my form when it's lacking. It feels like a great community to be a part of. It makes me want to be better.

A year ago, I walked into Hamabe Dojo with zero boxing experience—honestly, I was just looking for a new way to get active. Fast forward to now, and I can’t believe how far I’ve come. Not only have I gotten way more fit, but I feel healthier, stronger, and more confident than I’ve ever been.
The coach here is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. He took the time to teach me the basics, correct my form, and push me to be my best.
The workouts are tough but addictive. Each class challenges me in a new way, and over time I started noticing big changes—not just in how I look, but in my energy levels, mindset, and overall health.
What makes this place stand out is the community. Everyone here is supportive and motivating, no matter what level you're at. It’s such a positive atmosphere, and that made a huge difference in keeping me consistent and motivated.
If you're thinking about trying boxing—even if you’ve never thrown a punch before—this is 100% the place to start. I’m so glad I took that first step a year ago. It’s been life-changing.

Let’s first establish the most important thing you need to know - this is not some fashion boxing class studio. You will need to come in with the expectation to push yourself to your limits, learn and apply real techniques, condition both your mind and body to keep up, learn how to receive punches, and eventually spar.
Boxing is a huge learning curve, but I’m learning something new every session whether it is directly from the trainer or tips from other members. The trainer is very good at thoroughly explaining a technique (how, why), and members are open to sharing tips.
You will be part of a great community consisting of mostly high quality people with professional backgrounds / business owners, and everyone is pushing themselves to the limit. If you are interested in joining Hamabe Dojo, you can buy a 1-day trial, but a decision will be made whether you can join so it is not automatic. You can consider this as being part of an exclusive community, because the owner/trainer really makes it a priority to maintain a great community.
The other intrigue is that the gym is located in a nice area - Irvine. The owner/trainer is Japanese and true to Japanese mannerisms, the gym is immaculately clean and organized.
When I joined Hamabe Dojo, I was in terrible physical condition from years of detrimental habits and neglecting my health. I still have a long ways to go to improve physically, but after 6 weeks at Hamabe Dojo, I have lost nearly 8 pounds, burned a lot of fat and gained muscle. I thought my best years were behind me when I reached age 40, but now I feel my best years are just beginning.
While I am still a new member, I consider Hamabe Dojo an integral part of my life. The most important thing I am getting out of Hamabe Dojo is that I am strengthening both my mind and body - this will allow me to keep up with the rest of the demands in my life.

If you’re serious about boxing and ready to push yourself to the limit, this is the place to be. From the moment I stepped in, I could tell this dojo was something special. It's not just a gym; it is a community of dedicated and passionate people who are all working toward the same goal, excellence.
The head coach? Simply put, he’s the real deal. With years of experience under his belt, having trained with some of the best in the sport, his knowledge and expertise are unrivaled. But it’s not just about his own accolades, this coach has a track record of taking raw talent and turning it into champion level skill. Some of his past trainees have gone on to win titles themselves, a testament to the depth and caliber of his coaching. You won’t just be learning techniques; you’ll be learning from someone who’s dedicated their life to shaping future champions.
Now, let me be clear, this dojo is not for the faint of heart. It’s a strict environment where effort and commitment are expected from everyone, and the coach won’t hesitate to hold you accountable. In fact, if you’re not putting in the work, you won’t last. Clients who aren’t fully committed have been shown the door before, and that speaks volumes about the quality of the training here. But here’s the thing: the tough love approach is what makes this dojo so effective. You won’t be babied, but you’ll grow faster than you ever imagined.
And yet, despite the strictness, there’s a warmth here that’s hard to beat. The community is one of the most supportive I’ve ever been a part of. Everyone, from the seasoned fighters to those just starting, are willing to lend a hand, offer advice, and cheer you on when you hit a milestone. It's like a family where everyone is rooting for each other’s success. Whether you’re struggling with a new move or nailing a combination, the encouragement is always there.
The facilities are top tier as well. From heavy bags to speed bags, there is ample sparring space; this dojo has everything you need to take your boxing to the next level. It’s a place where you’ll feel challenged, but also motivated and inspired every single time you step through the door.
If you’re looking for a place to just work out and punch a bag, this may not be the right fit for you. But if you are serious about becoming a better boxer, test your limits, learn from the best, and join a community that pushes you every day; then this dojo is where you want to be. It’s a place where champions aren’t just made in the ring, but built through hard work, dedication, and a whole lot of heart. And believe me, once you experience it for yourself, you won’t want to train anywhere else.

I was introduced to Hamabe Dojo through a friend's recommendation, and I haven't looked back since! I've tried other gyms, but this one is the REAL DEAL HOLYFIELD!
This isn't your typical boxercise or booty boot camp--this is a legitimate boxing gym. Be warned: it's all about HARD WORK and DEDICATION.
The focus here is on mastering the fundamentals, building a solid foundation, and refining technique. It never gets easier, but strangely, I look forward to the (punishment...) or rather Challenge!
The coach don't just stand on the sidelines--he actively teaches, showing, and breaking down the "how and why" behind everything.
It's not just about fitness; it's a complete education in the craft of boxing.
The mental aspect of boxing is just as emphasized as the physical training, giving you a full-spectrum approach to the sport.
The community here is tight-knit, and everyone is incredibly supportive, constantly pushing each other to excel. If you're serious about learning the art of boxing, this is the place to be.

Hamabe Dojo Boxing is an incredible place to train, but it’s important to know a few things upfront: there are no walk-ins allowed, and everything is by appointment only—you have to contact them through Instagram to set it up. Membership is required, and this is not the kind of gym where you can have a casual attitude.
The first time I went, I walked in without knowing the process and was politely told that I needed to book an appointment through Instagram. At first, it felt a little strict, but now I understand why—they’ve built an amazing community that’s focused on discipline and respect.
Being part of this gym has helped me grow so much, both physically and mentally. The coach is phenomenal, and his attention to technique and detail has transformed my boxing skills. Beyond that, training here has been great for my mental health—it’s a place where you can push yourself, improve, and feel supported by a like-minded group of people.
If you’re serious about boxing and ready to commit to a disciplined, community-oriented environment, Hamabe Dojo is 100% worth it. Just make sure to reach out on Instagram first!

Hamabe Dojo is the most amazing and beginner-friendly gym you will ever go to! The moment you step in, everyone will say hi to you. The members here are incredibly nice and supportive to each other. Hamabe Dojo truly feels like a big family.
The gym is spotless and well-organized, thanks to the member’s and especially the coach’s effort. There are even sanitizer for members to clean their boxing gloves after training.
The coach really knows how to train beginners. I had close to zero boxing experience when I started. But luckily the gym has a beginner class that focus on practicing the fundamentals. The coach also mixes up the agenda for every class so it never feels repetitive or boring.
Highly recommend Hamabe Dojo to anyone looking for a friendly, clean, and beginner-friendly space to learn or train boxing.
Hamabe Dojo

My husband and I started boxing with the beginner class here at Hamabe Dojo. The environment is very welcoming and serious. We've heard a lot great words about it and got an intro class referred by our friends.
Hamabe Dojo can be both beginner friendly and professional. We are taught a lot of basic movements which are fundamental as we move along.
Coach is always encouraging you, promoting a happy wife happy life mode, and also knowing/pushing you on the limits for growth. All the members here are also friendly and welcomes you every time, when you come/leave, after each practice and every chance in between.
The gym itself is very clean and well organized with specific rules like no gloves on the ground, drink/powder only in designated areas, sanitize gloves and equipment on a daily basis.

Hamabe, run by our very dedicated Coach, is without a doubt an excellent place to learn boxing and train consistently. Coach focuses on technique, intensity (to your ability), and community. This means membership that keeps getting better as members become colleagues, team mates, and friends.
I've looked for a boxing gym that wouldn't compromise on quality for me to learn correctly and stay fit in my 40s. I started here around June 2021, dropping from 270 to 210 pounds in about 7 months with a strict diet, and staying with training made it the first time my weight hasn't yo-yo'd. Coach preaches "little by little" and sustainable progress, and I've maintained ~215 for the past year, too.
If you're considering a boxing gym, expect to get your money's worth here with a challenging workout teaching legit fundamentals. Bring your best attitude to learn from Coach and fellow members, and walk out really understanding the sweet science of throwing a proper punch!

I’ve been training at Hamabe Dojo for about 5 months now, and I will say that the coaching and instruction are perfect for someone who wishes to go beyond just learning how to box; but rather understanding the technicalities of each movement, the purpose behind the technique, and how to apply them with purpose & intent. Another unique feature about the gym is the community, Hamabe Dojo is not only full of well educated individuals, but also disciplined and supportive. The family/community centered ideology is a staple of the culture at Hamabe Dojo. The feel of the dojo projects values of inclusivity, education, and community. The effort, precision, & dedication that is taught & required makes this gym worthwhile making the others seem like “boxing dance studios”. If you desire to train at an actual boxing gym and to be taken seriously, then I recommend training at Hamabe Dojo, because the training is not intended or suited for the casual.

I will start out by saying that I highly recommend Hamabe Dojo to anyone looking to get to that next level. I came across Hamabe Dojo about two years ago. As a diehard boxing fan, I was searching for a local boxing gym to learn boxing fundamentals and improve my fitness level. I can say without a doubt that joining Hamabe Dojo was a great decision. This gym will teach you boxing and give you a tough workout every single class. The classes are great for people of all fitness levels. All that is expected is that you take the class serious and that you are respectful to others. Classmates help each other throughout class by practicing drills or sparring with one another or offering words of encouragement when the workout gets tough. It is a community unlike any other that I’ve seen at boxing and kickboxing gyms that I’ve visited in the past. Check out Hamabe Dojo for a class. You will be amazed at how much there is to learn just to properly throw a single punch.

Have been coming to this gym for a while now. This is a great place for people who are new to boxing but also want to learn more advanced skills. The gym has a great culture where people learn from each other and can socialize outside the gym as well. Lots of people come here to box but there are also many who just want to get in shape and live a healthier lifestyle. I will say the gym can be a bit strict/ serious so be prepared to have a good attitude. Most importantly be willing to learn and TRAIN HARD!

Hamabe dojo is more than just a boxing training. It extends beyond just the training itself to connecting with other individuals and communities. While the training style and expectations for (basic) things such as discipline, respect for the dojo and its community, as well as maintaining hygiene may be “strict,” Hamabe dojo prioritizes the fundamentals to ensure that members are able to train both the body and the mind in a respectful and clean environment. It truly is a place where one could improve their boxing skills along with disciplining their mind.
