the prices are stellar and the walls are so fun. Not only is the place great, the people are great. Our tire popped on the way out and one of the staff members Gigo and some other fellow climbers immediately went out of their way to help us out. give him a raise fr. we are so grateful for the gym and their people.

This is an interesting addition to the Hangar 18 collection. The location is great for Pasadena/Sierra Madre/Arcadia/Monrovia.

They have 10 auto-belay lines, which are very useful. I think some of the route setting suffers badly from size discrimination though. One line is tailored specifically for new climbers and kids, with only one route.

Most of the space is taken up by bouldering - I'm not a fan of that. I think at least one wall should be converted to top roping with overhangs (like the Long Beach location). It would encourage the climbers to learn to belay. They've got some colossal overhangs for bouldering.

The toilets are clean and well maintained, like all Hangar 18 locations. There are no storage bins/lockers near the front auto-belays area, which is inconvenient (and unlike the South Bay and Long Beach locations).

Visiting this gym location for the first time was exciting and fresh, of a new bouldering gym experience! The staff are very friendly and informative in speaking with a new/ongoing member about their climbing journey, meanwhile as they help you out in using their equipment.

The gym is small but offers more variety of holds and set challenges, that one would be going back to more than just warming up.

I’m definitely heading over to Hanger18 again and thank you to the staff who are always very warm and friendly!

A good variety of climbs, but the walls are not maintained very well. There are multiple spots with holes 3" wide, and the texture of some spots of the walls is more like painted wood than rock. Also many of the holds are very dirty or worn which indicates to me that they aren't washed very strenuously when routes are switched out. For 2/3 of the price of a Touchstone gym day pass, it's worth the money to just go there instead.

Nice bouldering gym with relatively stiff grading, though some of the walls don't have a very secure falling area. I would highly recommend spotting your partner on the walls leading to the weight room. Pricing okay for the area - expensive if you are used to european prices

I’ve had a membership for almost a year now and I love it. is it the nicest rock climbing gym in the world? no. there’s no AC, the bouldering routes are graded really harshly and feel scarier than other gyms bc the walls are higher and the mats are less cushiony. HOWEVER, the price is unbeatable (especially with groupon), the staff are nice, and the auto belays are really approachable. this gym is the sole reason me and my friends have been able to get into rock climbingβ€” other gyms are objectively nicer but are so much more expensive and less approachable and that counts for a lot. the fact that there’s a taco truck and an in-n-out nearby, and the metro station, means that it’s been perfect for me and my friends to climb and hang out, or for me to go by myself. this place has genuinely changed my life for the better and i’m grateful

Do not come here if you are bringing a minor child. Their waver system does not work and the people manning the desk are not capable of dealing with any issues. I filled out all the required electronic forms for my daughter, and received the corresponding email confirmations. However, they claimed that they need some other confirmation which never arrived at my end. Since my email was clearly correct, the issue was on their end. However, the only explanation I received was that "lots of people have this problem." Extremely unprofessional and a terrible waste of our time!

I was a loyal member for over 3 years when I moved. The community there is absolutely awesome good people. But when it comes to the company, well it’s pretty abysmal. I canceled my membership through one of the iPads like I was instructed, mind you this is 4 years ago. Yesterday I noticed that I’ve been getting charged every month for the last 4 years and obviously not using it. When I contacted them they said unless I have a cancelation email I’m completely out of luck. No nothing. I’m supposed to keep a cancelation email for 4 years? You’d think by looking at my membership they can see I haven’t been in since then. Find another gym to goto. I’m calling my bank and disputing the charges and filing for fraud. Dont let them steal your money, even if it’s a β€œgood deal” it won’t be in the long run.

Great for second visit and so on but the first visit was very confusing. The front desk just sat there chatting to one another and did the bare minimum for first timers to sign the waiver and that’s it. Nothing was explained about logistics of membership and stuff. The intro class was great though and it has everything you need about climbing.

After the first time at Hangar, you basically know what to do. This gym is relatively new and clean. Can’t deny it’s a great environment for climbing. Just that the customer service is not beginner friendly at all, otherwise if you just go there and climb, it’s a good gym.

Finally made some major upgrades to the workout room and did repairs to the climbing walls. Hopefully the newly painted climbing walls will hold up for another few years before it starts to chip away again and dig in between your fingernails. Staff are all really chill and friendly. Great for all levels. There are some autobelays to change it up if you are bored of bouldering. Wished they had sport climbing...

I originally left a review criticizing the route setters for being lazy and not being as creative as other gyms...

That comment I originally made was unnecessary and rude. I apologize to the route setters for that.

I've been alternating between this gym and the Upland and Rancho Hangar 18 as well as the Post. This gym is fun and the route setters have done a fine job. Though I will say, if you are a first timer, I would come early to this gym or come on a weekday. The wait times for beginner courses are not the best. You will have an easier time going to Upland or Rancho.

If you are experienced however, I think you will have a blast here. They really challenge you.

This gym is ok. My main gripe is the design of the walls themselves. Aside from the autobelay area and two tiny bouldering sections, all of the walls here are overhung, many quite steeply. This limits the variation of moves and routes that can be set here. Other reviews say the routes are sandbagged - sure I guess but I just don't like ripping my finger pads off climbing overhangs constantly.

The warm up area is also tiny and is used as the locker room. Unfortunately there usually isn't much space on the mats to warm up as it has been busy most times I've been there.

Still a great gym but the vibe just isn’t the same without Kellen. He really tied the community there together and his departure has certainly left a void. Still not a bad community but Kellen is just a great dude who I miss every time I show up. This was once a 5 star review but I changed it to 4 because Kellen made it a 6 and I just can’t feel quite the same about it without him. That said, most gyms in LA everyone seems more concerned with being cool than having a good time and hanging with fellow climbers. Also if you climb here regularly you can go to touchstone gyms and crush 2 v grades higher and actually BE cool rather than standing around trying to act it β€˜cause touchstones are soft feel good gyms that cost twice as much monthly. When I climb at hangar I am often humbled but that realistic grading makes me one of if not the best climber in the room at the other soft gyms in LA. Can’t say enough good things about this gym and it’s staff. Don’t waste your money at any other gym and TAKE YOUR CLIMBING SHOES OFF WHEN YOU GO INTO THE BATHROOM

My family planned to try a new hobby in 2023, and we decided to try it here. We came a bit late for our first visit a few days ago but had a great experience with a friendly staff who rescheduled our reservation; we almost thought we should get a membership. Today, we came again with high expectations, but the system was done due to internet outrage, which can happen anywhere, so understandable. However, the staff was very rude and made us feel like liars when we told them we didn't get a confirmation email for rearrangement. Further, I guess the staff noticed our frustration after some intense exchange and told us, 'feel free to go to locations.' Really? We are done with Hanger 18, where customers are poorly treated. Simply put, the visit ruined our almost last day of 2022, and I can't recommend to anyone to visit this place.

Usually go to the gym in Upland. This gym is just as great! It definitely has a different vibe. It's a little smaller, with more focus on bouldering. There wasn't any top rope climbing I could see, but the did have a couple of sections with auto belay. Major difference, this has a gym within the gym! So if you wanna work on pull ups or hit some weights, you can! They also had a sound system that was playing some Black Sabbath. Definitely created a mood. Would come back!

This gym is very small, and the gradings are extremely harsh. I brought my wife here for fun and she cannot even climb half of any v0 routes. Most of the v5s feel like v6 or v7 in other gyms. Recently they even had a green v3 which experienced climbers have difficulty making the first move. I understand the route setters might just want to make the gym a bit more challenging. But setting up a v3 that feels like v6+ will definitely discourage people.

The gym itself is pretty small. Most of the routes begin and end in the same style and difficulty and I wished they changed it up more but overall I do still like the setting, especially on the more overhung walls and the cave. Came here while visiting the city and had a pretty poor first impression.

First the staff person helping us was pretty unprofessional and began helping a different group that interrupted us while we were in the middle of finishing paying for a day pass and we wound up standing there being ignored for several minutes while the staff helped the group that cut in on us.

We were then informed we had to pass a bouldering safety check which I felt was very superfluous. When testing me they asked me to show how I fell off from halfway up a climb (the safe way being to land and roll on your back). They then asked me to climb all the way to the top of the route and back down but they did not ask my partner to do this, why was it necessary for me but not them? Also no one in the gym seemed to really follow the safe falling guidelines, primarily landing on their feet from the top of the walls.

We also had a few other friends come to climb but they were informed that their children could not climb even under supervision unless they first take their intro to bouldering class which was not available at the time. This is not listed clearly anywhere on their website for first time visitors that this is necessary.

Amenities were also lacking as there wasn't much in the way of locker rooms or changing rooms and only two bathrooms for the entire place.

Overall a lot of headaches before even getting to climb. And the facilities were pretty underwhelming on top of all that. While there are some autobelays, they are very short, no taller than the bouldering walls in height which makes me question the point of them. The bouldering walls themselves are pretty old and could use some new paint or patching as there are several places where the wood is fully exposed and looking a bit splintery.

The setting felt uneven to me, V1-V4 felt softer and there was a sharp uptick in difficulty transitioning to V5 with V5-7 feeling all about the same difficulty as well. This may just be me not use to the style or the routes I chose.

The last thing that I want to critique is the COVID mask rules, while most people kept their masks on there were clearly a few people who had it pulled down under their chin the entire time I was there and I think the gym should do a better job of enforcing their mask requirement, else why even have one.

TLDR: Drop in climber felt the staff were unprofessional and affordable in this case does not mean good value.

Love this gym. I joined when gyms re-opened and was delighted to find a really warm, fun atmosphere. The regulars are quick to offer encouragement and welcoming of people of different ages, backgrounds, and ability levels. I credit Kellen with setting a great tone. The gym itself is a classic bouldering-focused gym with lots of problems, a dozen auto-belays on short walls, some training equipment in a workout room, and big doors for fresh air on both ends of the building. Good setting; affordable price. It's also a block from the Metro and REI. Check it out!

Our first trip and this is really all you need to know about the place...my 10 yr old son got tips and techniques from absolute strangers. On one ascent, near the top of his climb...he froze and started saying "I can't do this...I need to get down..." and his feet came off the wall.

So there's my son, about 8 ft (or so) holding on by his hands by his hands for about 10 seconds or so and finally gets purchase with his feet and down climbs to the floor. Shaking and tears. No, he wasn't hurt. He was overwhelmed and scared and just had an adrenaline blast into his heart and brain he had never experienced before.

We walked it off for a few minutes then sat down. I explained that I was proud of him for not losing control. I explained that courage is not the lack of fear, but what you do with the fear you feel - and that he did the right thing by getting his feet back under him, catching his breath and down climbing until his feet were back on terra firma.

As soon as I was done with my "dad moment" - and I mean immediately - different climbers came over and gave him a fist bump while telling him how awesome he was and that no everyone could do what he did.

My son has been talking about his epic moment all day.

and we look forward to coming back...often.

Definitely a good small local gym feel. Not fancy at all like some the climbing gyms in LA but the routes are good, hard grading, and the membership price is unbeatable.

Nice small bouldering gym with a good variety of problems. There are also a few top rope routes but the focus is bouldering
Unfortunately no locker rooms - so come in climbing outfit or change in the restrooms

Looks like this place has good bouldering. Top ropes is just ok.

This gym is small, economically priced, and fun. The employees are friendly. This is a really good grungy climbing gym. I'd rather boulder here than climb, as the climbing walls are short. It may not be for everyone, but if you are looking to build strength fast, their route setting is hard. The crash matt flooring is good, and not sketchy. The holds aren't super grippy, and it can be a little difficult to tell the colors apart, but I still had fun - and it's challenging. I recommend trying it out.

Hangar 18 at Arcadia is a mostly bouldering gym with a few rather short top roping walls with nothing above a 5.10 (at least when I was there). But that's fine because there is a lot of bouldering. The people that work there are quite nice. I really enjoyed the various challenges that have been constructed for all ability levels. Fantastic gym to get a lot of climbing in. Lots of parking nearby. Quite affordable compared to most climbing gyms too. Only downsides: no water fountain and the holds could be cleaned a little more. Still definitely recommend.
