New climbers are required to take an orientation class, which takes about 30. We paid $30 but it is $22 after that for regular climbers. They have auto-belay here but I wish the auto-belay area had more space!

Excellent climbing gym. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They gave us a 15-minute tutorial on climbing belay and on using the boulders. Great place for beginners and more advanced climbers. I would highly recommend it

I wouldn’t recommend if you prefer rope climbing. Limited routes, quite soft grading at least to the 11s, and some routes are not available for climbing due to the way the gym is set up (for example the offwidth).

My son used to be a very shy scrawny little boy who hated exercise. He wouldn’t play sports, I forced him into taking karate since he wouldn’t go near any kind of team sports because he wasn’t confident and hated the feeling of responsibility if he made a bad play. After years of karate and I appreciated every second of that class, he was still weaker than the other boys and although he was even teaching the kid’s classes, he didn’t feel like it was a good fit for him, he felt the stress to keep up with the class and be truly good enough to be a black belt, he needed to train harder but his heart was not there. He started climbing at Hangar 18 when he went through a hard period of his young life when something traumatic happened to him. He found himself being challenged by bouldering and could feel he was getting stronger as he held himself up on the walls. He has been climbing for 2 years now and he is SO strong he can almost do a one armed pull up, he’s ripped, confident, and most of all, he is very happy. He started driving at 17 and has been going regularly since he could drive, and he is so focused and has clear goals to be a great climber. This is purely against himself, there is no sparring, no combat, nothing at all like karate and this is such a great fit for him and his personality. I’m so happy that he is so mentally, physically and emotionally healthy, I don’t ever have to worry about him not getting his exercise, except he does need to get his heart rate up and do some cardio… but this is great!!! His friends join sometimes and he takes his little sister they climb together and challenge each other.
The workers here are all very serious about their jobs and if you ever go for a class or take minors they make sure you have proper waivers, training and are strict which is great, safety first! I don’t want there to be any accidents so I feel good that they are pretty strict. But you can tell that they also are having fun, they like their jobs. The atmosphere is very friendly but like I said they are strict and they need to be. They don’t do birthday parties they don’t have any frills- just straight forward rock climbing. I love that they don’t take up space for little kids parties. More serious about climbing. Good job!

I agree with other reviewers: the holds at this gym are old, cracked, and unexciting. I've seen some break apart while climbers were using them. There also was one that was painted over and over that looked really sad 🥲
Other locations, such as Long Beach, Rancho, and Orange, have newer holds and volumes, along with more creative and fresh route settings.
Given that this is one of the busiest Hangar 18 gyms, they should invest in updating their holds.
Also hoping that they hire a new route setter soon!!! Routes has been bit repetitive for the past few weeks. The challenges aren’t as varied as they used to be, which makes the climbing experience less exciting. It would be great to see some fresh, creative routes like the Rancho location or LBR.

Review for April 2024:
I've been here three times so far, and unfortunately, it's the only Hangar that I have been to that will receive 4 stars. Mostly because the holds for the routes here feel really janky and old. The overall experience of rock climbing is still here. The routes offer a lot of variety, and they have top rope, auto belay, and a lead climb section. The staff here is friendly and very knowledgeable of climbing techniques and protocol. The bathroom and overall environment are clean. They have a small top out section for bouldering and use the v-system over the tag system, which is always a plus. However, the only issue are half the holds smooth when they probably shouldn't be, most likely through overuse. I've also seen a few slightly painted over holds as well, haha. I'll still visit because, like I said, the overall environment is good, and it's still fun to climb here once in a while, but it would not be my first choice out of all the nearby Hangar 18s.

The staff is absolutely friendly and laid back. First timers would not be intimidated at all, the gym is adequately size but even with its size there's a lot of variation of levels from V0 and up! I recommend taking their first timers class since the staff were knowledgeable and patient with you as they understand that you are their to learn.

Came here for bouldering, though they also have autobelay and top rope. Compared to gyms in NYC, this gym is pretty soulless: the climbs rely more on brute strength rather than finesse, and aren't that varied, so you don't feel much motivation to project nor joy at, say, flashing. Seems to have a lot of V0s and V1s. Staff and facilities just adequate. One family there was having particular trouble controlling their 3- or 4-year old from running underneath climbs, and I do think the staff should have been more on top of this even if ultimately it's the parents' responsibility. For SoCal, people weren't very friendly - which isn't a strong selling point for that gym's community. Probably fine for beginners and families, but you'll move on once you see nicer options if affordable.

Great little climbing place. Erika was amazing - she was very patient and thorough with the top rope and belaying lesson. I highly recommend the place even if only for her.
They have top rope, auto-belay, and bouldering options.
Climbing shoes are available for rent as well as harnesses. You don't have to pay for the grigri / belaying device, just give your keys, phone, or a credit card as collateral.

Worst climbing gym in the LA area. Staff is exceptionally rude and made us watch a ten minute video instead of an orientation. The place smells horrible (either of gym socks or the food the staff bring in to eat), the bathrooms and changing areas are tiny, climbing areas are small and poorly maintained. Also they don't even have a water fountain. I've never been to a gym without a water fountain, such a joke. Go anywhere else.

Not the best time when I went because 1/3 of the gym was in construction. It’s extremely noisy and loud. I don’t find it pleasurable to climb in this environment.
However, this location does look like a good gym if there were no construction. There were not many people when I was there. They have this cool lighting wall in the last photo too! I’m not sure how it works but it looks fun. My home gym didn’t have this.
Parking lot is spacious but shared with other businesses. The gym itself is spacious compared to some other Hangar 18. Shoes keeper at the entrance was very helpful. Staff was nice.

Hangar 18 was my first gym that I ever climbed at 6 years ago. Since then I’ve visited countless others in England, Israel, Canada, and all over the states. I could be climbing at any of the touchstones that have triple gym size and more facilities. But the reason why hangar 18 will forever be my favorite climbing gym is the community and staff. The small gym size forces people to be close to one another and breeds this beautiful close knit group of climbers that supports one another, teaches each other, and most importantly wants to be friends to everyone.
The staff is so absolutely stellar and kind. They greet me with a smile and genuine conversation every time I come in. David the manager is wonderful and personable. Erika is just the sweetest and kindest person to ever be. Sean will have you rolling on the ground laughing before the day is over. Manny will always force you to be happy even if your day was the worst. Kim has the sweetest smile every time you walk in. Coco is like a breath of fresh air whenever I see her. And Luke is so professional and studious but somehow hilarious with everything he does. Hangar is my happy place and I’ve made friends here that will last a life time. It’s not just a gym to me, it’s a big wonderful family.
Also the setting is sick and makes you strong as hell. No gym prepares you for climbing outdoors like this one. Sean, you’re the GOAT.

I absolutely love this climbing gym. It has been the only gym I’ve been to in LA that has a genuine community that is welcoming and friendly. The staff have always been so warm since my first day of climbing. Over the past 2 years I’ve seen so many great improvements in the social media platforms, bathrooms, sets, holds, and community building. Arguably the best hangar site since it has so many different options for climbing (auto-belay, top rope, lead, and bouldering).

This gym has everything you could possibly want in a climbing gym. But that's about it. It's crowded, expensive, and so very corporate and soulless. The routes are pretty tame, and the tunes blasting through the speakers sound like the music you'd hear at Kohl's. I'm sure it's a great place to climb for some people, but not me.

Cool gym with good route setting. Smaller area, but good use of space. Plenty of route on top rope, lead, auto-belay, and to Boulder. Testing out of top rope, if you know what you’re doing only takes a minute. Just ask. Didn’t have much time so I didn’t try testing out of lead. They have some crack features and a well set slab wall.

Great gym with fun routesetting (saying this as a former Touchstone member). The price is very affordable and it's great that there is no initiation fee. There's always parking available and the staff is really friendly. My one qualm about this gym is that a lot of the holds are old and worn out so there's not a lot of friction when trying to hold onto them, but it just adds an extra element of challenge.

The route setting is really basic and feels like the same thing for the past year I've been there. Gym is not really a Gym just some dumbbells and pull up bar and bench. They do have a kilter board and campus board which is nice. My first time here, I was a guest from my brothers membership. You're allowed one free guest a month as part of your membership. This location has a great variation between bouldering, auto relay, and if you're experienced, relay but you've got the be trained for that. If you're new, I'd recommend the V1, V2 color coordinated rock pieces. The space is very casual and it's a great hobby to explore. Make sure to practice safe habits and safe landing because it can be dangerous. Its a lot of fun. Memberships are $54 a monthly with discounts available to teachers/students. They offer equipment rentals but if you're commiting, I'd recommend purchasing your own gear.

Rock climbing gym with bouldering and auto-belay available. There are Groupons available for classes, otherwise, it’s $20 for a day pass plus $3 rental for climbing shoes. If you do auto-belay, it’s an additional $3 for the harness. Cash and credit cards accepted. There are cubbies around the permitter as well as in the restrooms (located in the back) for you to place your belongings. There are larger day use lockers in the restrooms as well.
There’s a wide array of routes for bouldering that they do change up. They have a pull up bar and free weights available as well. Masks are required while climbing. Free parking is available in their lot. It’s family friendly and I did see quite a few younger children. The staff is standoffish as other reviews have noted.

Great, cheap gym, but it's cheap for a reason. You get what you pay for.
Pros:
1. They rotate the problems regularly.
2. Lots of parking and good location.
3. The kilter and campus boards are nice.
4. Clean facilities.
Cons:
1. Crowded. The space is way too small to allow people to Boulder and top rope at the same time, or even to get a decent rotation onto the boulders. The top ropers fall onto the bouldering crash pads since the belay area is too small and too close to the bouldering areas. The belay areas are usually filled with people resting from bouldering anyways. It's hard to get a good workout in when you gotta wait so long to get on the wall. Going after work is an exercise in extreme patience.
2. People have very little spacial awareness and will walk or stand under you while to you climb. This is worse when there's a little kids birthday party or something. Very dangerous and I see this often.
3. Not enough cubbies and lockers during peak hours. People just leave their stuff all over the floor. This could easily be fixed by adding lockers and cubbies. This gym needs to plan for their peak times better.
4. The weight/training area is an afterthought. One bench with a few weights doesn't quite cut it for the number of people using this gym.
5. The monthly price hike starts to make other nicer gyms in the area more attractive. When the price was less than $40/mo it was a no-brainer, not so much anymore considering the other cons I've listed.

I travel a lot and this weekend I found myself in LA, the closest bouldering gym to me being Hangar 18, South Bay.
The bouldering problems were challenging. I'm usually climb V3s and V4s. I found most of the V3s do-able with a couple of tries but the V4s were significantly harder.
The layout of the gym is a little cramped but the routes plentiful.
The climbers in the gym itself were friendly and welcoming, something that's important for me as a nomadic, travelling climber. The staff were perfectly polite although not entirely engaging.

I visited this gym for one time climbing during my visit in LA. While I later found out that they have special offer for first time visitors at the moment, they insisted that I should pay $33 for intro class+one day pass. They could have informed me that they are offering 45% discount at the moment. Unfortunately, I left the gym and decided not to climb at this gym because $33 was for one-time climbing seemed too expensive.
Plus, this is the first climbing gym that ever required me to pay additional fee for Orientation session.

Sorely disappointed in their "intro" class. It was really just a safety class & learning how to fall. The "instructor" added in a few bits of information/explanations about color coded pathways up & numerical difficulty ratings. The "intro" class was literally only about 10 minutes. The instructor wasn't geared up for interactive training (had no harness & was in flipflops). Provided no training for top roping or belaying. Not even any instructed practice runs for bouldering or auto belay. Very cavalier & no effort to make it an interesting experience. My Groupon deal specifically stated belaying lessons included but the "Instructor" said they only teach top roping/belaying if it's a book group event. (I asked nicely a couple of times to the instructor & a different guy at the front desk.)
It seems to me that it's primarily operated as a cheap money grab. For them the number of patrons they can get in is more important than a quality experience. Does not meet the expectations that their website advertises & total fail at fulfilling the Groupon deal.
For a true INTRO class I recommend someplace else like Stronghold Gym.
Trying to get my $s back to use at a different gym.

Really disappointing gym, would NOT recommend. Very small run-down space, very overpriced for a day pass, and the holds were so worn and polished that I slipped off of most footholds I tried. I’m at a v3/v4 level and felt that the holds were so slippery, the only hand holds I could trust were jugs and some crimps. The lighting was terrible too. At least I was refunded after 20 frustrating minutes here.

Great climbing gym, nice helpful workers here and is always filled with good climbers. When you first walk-in you smell nothing but musky feet and chalk but its all part of the sport.

Ir would be better if they had more lighting and better restroom and changing room. As alternative to other climbing gyms they will loose clientele unless they lower the fees

Love it here! Great for all levels of climbing including beginners. They change out routes routinely and they have lots of top roping and bouldering routes available. The staff is super chill.
It can be super busy and crowded after work but usually pretty quiet during the day or even early afternoon.

Cool rock climbing place. A little small and can get pretty crowded quickly. Avoid going during weekends due to kid birthday parties. A great way to get a fun workout in.

Never thought I would get in to rock climbing, until I came here. A very addicting sport that is completely beginner friendly? I love it. It's easy for anyone to start at almost any age. If you can walk you can climb! Great bouldering, auto belay, and belay routes all around. And they change the routes often so you never get bored! If youre considering going here I would say just go for it. Try it at least once and if it's not for you, then it's not for you. But if it is, then it's an awesome hobby to have.

This is hands down my favorite hanger, it would have gotten 5 stars if the staff were nicer. I've only ever been greeted by two of the people at the entrance, the other guys just stay on their phones as if they have better things to do than say hi to people.

Moderate-sized gym. Routes are fun and challenging, with 2-3 autobelays, lead-climbing cave, bouldering, and belayed routes. I've been a weekly member since 2017, mainly doing level 10s. New routes almost every week.

A great gym with welcoming and friendly atmosphere. They update routes on Fridays and offer classes and training. If you are a beginner this is the best gym to go to. They could use a better weight/training space, but you get what you pay for.

A little tiny, but the environment is calming and colorful. It's tucked in the back of a bare business center. Very helpful & friendly staff. First day of membership, shoe rental is free, $3 thereafter. Try it, it tops a typical gym. Oo & they offer yoga. They do offer day passes.

They change the routes fairly frequently and both the staff and fellow climbers are friendly. They usually only offer advice when you ask but that's because they don't want to to feel like they're criticizing you. Everyone is really helpful regarding climbing technique for different body types.

I've been a member here for 3 years and think it's a great place. The facility isn't huge but big enough. Bouldering is good especially in that they change the routes pretty frequently. It can get busy after work so if you can go by 4-4:30 it's not too crowded. People are really friendly and are willing to help you if you get stumped with a route. I'd give 5 stars if the staff was more friendly/welcoming. Look for membership deals and discounts throughout the year 👍
