Zero hot water in all three showers in woman’s locker room. Spent a lot of time trying to get showers to work but eventually gave up. Told the front desk but they were extremely busy with a big line for the climbing gym. Bad timing I guess.

First off thank you for this amazing space to recreate indoors! Love the climbing, all the equipment and the sauna!
The reason for 3 stars is because of lack in cleanliness especially in the locker rooms, showers and sauna, (need bigger towel bin!), lack of maintenance and construction upkeep, as well as lack of member accountability that tends to lead to all of the above.
I am a new member and really enjoy having this gym in our home town and I am very impressed and stoked to finally be a member! Employees have been very helpful and kind. Climbing routes are awesome! Love the diversity! Maybe more employees cruising around doing a bit of quality control could help.
Thanks

Great job High Altitude Fitness Leadership. Other than the Snake Oil fitness classes that hog the stretching room and equipment everyday. I love the gym. I've recently had a horrible experience at a small gym in Fallon Nevada, and it made me want to let you know you're doing it right in this gym! I'm thankful for such a great gym, it's always clean, weights and equipment are organized. Not to mention most importantly a highly trained friendsly staff. Keep up the high standards!! When the world gets weaker we must be stronger to maintain quality. Thank You!

Thank you and your staff for fixing the flooring in the free weight room. But now, can the dumbells please be put back as they were prior to the flooring repair. The way they are now organized, leads to congestion on the South side of the room, as the dumbells most often used are all grouped there now, and the heavier dumbells which are not often used, are all on the North side of the room.

Awesome gym and climbing facility in Truckee. Nice staff, impressive free weight and cardio areas and a lot of classes. Clean locker rooms, nice sauna. My only gripe is when the gym equipment breaks it takes a long time to get repaired. And the music feed is just a weird mix of great to horrendous (I suppose that’s why everyone wears headphones.)

I LOVE THIS PLACE...and I hate leaving Google reviews. But I went here with my girlfriend and her two daughters to go watch them climb, and they charged us 60 bucks to watch the both of them climb, even if we didn't participate. Super friendly staff, but they gotta fix this. Why the hell would we pay that much to watch her kids climb. Idk they need to figure this out.

Honestly one of the worst gym experiences I’ve ever had. The staff was incredibly rude and condescending — the kid working the desk came off as pretentious with a huge chip on his shoulder.
The part that really blew me away was when we went to pay for our day passes. They charged us three $50 passes: one for me, one for my wife, and one for our 4-month-old daughter who was asleep in her stroller. We explained that one of us would be watching her either in the lobby or outside while the other climbed, but the attendant told us they do this to “discourage people from bringing children.”
A few takeaways:
1. The parking lot was empty — never a good sign.
2. The place was plastered with sales pitches and “special offers” trying to lock people into long-term memberships, which screams struggling business.
3. The vibe was pure localism and entitlement, which is ironic — this gym is in a town that relies heavily on tourism, yet they actively discourage visitors from using the facility.
And here’s the kicker: it’s a rock climbing gym. A type of place where families and kids are usually welcome. Instead, they’d rather charge hundreds of dollars to keep kids away.
Bottom line: horrible experience. Pretentious staff, ridiculous policies, and an unwelcoming atmosphere. Save your money and find somewhere else.

The facilities appear to be in excellent condition, and I was looking forward to our visit. However, I was disappointed with the customer service experience. We purchased a day pass for the rock climbing wall, but within about 90 seconds after purchasing, my son decided he didn’t feel comfortable and asked to leave. When I approached the front desk to request a refund, I was encouraged to try the upstairs area before making a decision. Unfortunately, even after two minutes upstairs, my son still wanted to leave.
I returned to the front desk to again request a refund but was told that refunds are not provided and that I had misunderstood the earlier staff member. While I completely understand that your stated policy is to not offer refunds, I feel the situation warranted some flexibility. Being encouraged to explore the facility when we had clearly expressed discomfort, only to be denied a refund moments later, feels misleading and dismissive of our experience. I hope you’ll consider reviewing how situations like this are handled in the future to better support your guests.

Your facility is run very well. I do have some suggestions to help improve people’s experience. I’ve noticed numerous folks not wiping down their equipment after use. I recommend increased signage reminding them of this sanitary practice. Secondly, as it heats up, having fans placed throughout would be welcomed. Lastly, for your clientele’s safety and your liability, I’d highly recommend purchasing a Smith Machine. Keep up the good work and listening to my ideas.

Edit - 2025 ( adding some good vibes since it's been a while)
Moved to the area in 2020 to climb, and it's so nice to have a place to go regularly when outdoors isn't an option, I need a quick sesh, or I just want to sauna. They have pretty much all the nice new equipment you'd need to get a solid workout in. Autobelay is clutch for fitness laps when you pop in solo. I'm often in twice a day 6AM/6PM haha.
I meet so many cool people at the gym, lots of humble yet inspirational senders getting after it. Anyone who's really skilled at something always seems to be willing to give pointers on how to get good. Many of my favorite people in Truckee are regulars.
Owners have always been super cool with me since before the Truckee gym opened (driving over to Incline first winter here was wild), and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Setters will put up routes based on certain style or idea if you get to know them. Shout out to the managers that handle all the background stuff to keep the operation going.

The rule here is: everyone who goes in need to buy a pass. In order to have my son climb here, parent/adult is required to be with him all time and needs to pay for the pass even though I am not doing anything. This rule doesn’t make sense at all. It is not friendly for family with kids. I have been to a lot of climbing gyms with my son and this is the only place has this kind of rules. It just forces you to pay more.

I have come to this gym twice while in town to boulder, and I think it's pretty good for a smaller town gym, but it's a smaller town gym.
Pros:
Decent sized lead wall and a pretty small (30-40 problem) bouldering wall.
The exercise areas seem very nice, but I haven't used them.
Cons:
It's a little annoying that the only bathrooms are downstairs.
I also don't really like the setting here, it's a lot of awkward moves that don't flow.
Bad labeling, it's kind of hard to tell what the start is, where the end is, etc.
It is *expensive*! $36 for a day pass and shoe rental for a tiny wall like this is out to lunch. If it was $25 or under I'd call it a good deal but taking my cousins to climb cost us over $150 for 90 mins. If it was cheap, the other cons wouldn't matter, but it isn't.

I'll start with also clarifying that I'm a longtime local and have been a member of the Truckee location for more than 2 years. I started with H.A.F. in its first location in Incline Village years before. I moved closer to Truckee, so I made the transition to this location. Most of the 5 star reviews on yelp are quick visits. Pay attention to what long-time members reviews are.
To start, this place is a climbing gym that makes a terrible attempt at being anything else. If a cheaper option for a couple existed, I wouldn't be a member.
Unfortunately, for the age of this building, the floor is bubbled and uneven in multiple spots both upstairs and downstairs, so placing equipment down can be challenging to not have a wobble while trying to use it. The locker rooms have flooded in the past, and now there seems to be a consistent smell of mildew upon entering the men's locker room with or without the sauna in operation. Lockers also malfunction and either don't stay locked, have broken doors or lock you out often.
When equipment breaks, it takes WEEKS for it to be repaired. When equipment does finally get fixed, it's usually a band-aid patch job that usually results in the same piece of equipment being broken within a couple of days.
As far as the equipment itself, it's missing BASIC machines that most other gyms have. They also lack multiple pieces of equipment. There's one single smith machine in this entire place. With all that square footage, no doubt another few pieces of basic gym equipment would be great for people that don't just climb. When it was asked about some additional equipment, attitude was the response.
There are also ridiculous policies in place that seem to only pertain to the gym community over the climbing community.
If you have to bite the bullet and become a member and can go to the Incline location, DO IT. You'll find that equipment and management are leaps and bounds above this location.

Excellent customer service. And the new Manager is very considerate for our family needs. And equally important, I also love the outstanding group fitness classes!!! My most favorites are Total Body Fit and Cycling by Kimberly Anderson (wow!!!) when I feel being best challenged and progressed. Pilates by Diane Stone Field and Kettlebell Blast and HIIT by Olivia Windisch when I feel productive. Besides strength, I have excellent flexibility and I still enjoy Yoga by Shari Beard very much because it is peaceful while stretching the muscles I did not think about. Most importantly, I feel that the community is diverse, accepting, and welcoming. I feel that everyone is joyful in their own skin.

One of the best climbing gyms I've been to. Tall rope walls, good bouldering diversity, great setting and above all state of the art new holds everywhere. Only negative is that the front desk usually only has one employee, so you're liable to wait for a long time if there's more than one or two people ahead of you to check in.

“Sauna” issues.
Usually it’s not a sauna, it’s a steam room. People dump way too much water on the heater. It’s to the point that it usually smells like mold. The same smell you get from a steam room that hasn’t been washed recently. Guess you can’t please everyone but there are a lot of gyms that do this better by having a dry sauna and then a steam room for those who want a moldy steam room. The rest of the gym is nice, but I really like a good dry sweat post workout and I can rarely get one at this gym.

On vacation in Truckee and purchased week passes for myself and my daughter to use the climbing areas, mostly for bouldering. Really fun, diverse, and well maintained routes. After two days, the gym announced the bouldering area would be closed for 3 days for renovations, which really impacted the value of the passes for us. Manager Alex stepped in to extend the pass expirations so we didn't miss any days of bouldering. Very appreciated and we'll be back again next time we visit the area.

Great gym. Relatively affordable. It seems like there is a new manager at the truckee location now, much better than the last.

High Altitude Fitness is excellent! Just took another outstanding yoga class with Ann Marie Sheridan. She is an incredible yoga instructor, and so knowledgeable about anatomy. Her gentle verbal cues improve your alignment and awareness of your body mechanics. She meets you wherever you are and moves your practice forward! 🙏🏼

For a gym membership that cost 3 times more than most gym memberships the gym is a mess. I have seen machines take up to a month to get fixed. And they have not gotten more bands after many have disappeared. The only reason I go to this gym is for the location.

Olivia is outstanding. As a 72 year old who never ever would take a class I find myself looking forward to her HIIT classes every week. Partnered with Matt Y for personal training I am healthier and fitter than I have been for a long time.

very rude at the front desk. came with 8 people and was given a bunch of attitude saying we should’ve called ahead from the guy

Hannah was awesome in helping my kids (age 7 and 9) use the auto-belay! Service is always great here but not happy about their newer policy that adults who aren't climbing have to pay the full day fee cost of $28 just to supervise.

Would ask that you reserve a couple of

HAF is a great facility that struggles under poor management. While the facility offers great climbing on the boulder and roped walls, a kilterboard, and 3 distinct workout areas, their pricing model and staffing needs improvement. They don't advertise it online but if you cancel a membership within 3 months you are charged a $100 fee. They have no single month or punchcard options, only a weekly pass that is only justified by an exorbitant daily pass fee. They also don't give you a key fob, so you cannot check in without a staff member or use the lockers.
Staff wise, they do not put more than one person on in the evening so it's very hard to get a belay test. However, when you need staff to check you in for your weekly pass they are never around and seem very annoyed that they have to check you in. Other guests also complained about their cancellation policy which makes it very hard to end an eft membership and they will not refund any auto charges.
Again this is a beautiful facility with generally friendly staff it just seems poorly run and like they want to squeeze as much money out of their members and visitors as they can. If you read some of the one star reviews and the gyms response, you’ll find that none of these issues are new.

I had a guest pass that the employee at the front desk told me was good for 24 hours. Since I joined around noon, he said it was good until noon the next day. He even went as far as to look up what classes were offered the next morning without me asking. Very nice of them. With this information, I left the gym for the day and instead moved around my entire day's schedule to checkout the rest of facilities at high altitude the next morning. Upon arriving, I was not permitted to enter. I was informed by the front desk that the guest passes were only good for the day and they were "sorry" for the misinformation provided by their staff, but I could not enter. Where is your integrity to honor the word of your employee as a courtesy for the misinformation they provided?? Obviously, this was a training issue. How is this the customers fault? It's unfortunate that the opportunity to build relationships with future paying customers went out the window because you feel that it was a financial loss for you. As a Truckee native born and raised, this was very disappointing to experience. The mistraining of staff should never fall on the customer as a burden!

I am quite grateful to have this high quality climbing gym in Truckee. Excellent and routinely changed route setting, modern holds, quality gym equipment and friendly staff. There will alway be imperfections in any business but as a climbing gym, I'm very pleased with the effort to bring a modern facility to this small town.
