Hipline is THE thing I look forward to every week. You must try Iso’s class! They’re a gem - their class is so healing. It’s a place to feel free, and have FUN. It’s changing my relationship to “exercise” in beautiful ways. 10/10.

I’ve joined and left a dozen gyms and studios, but Hipline is truly unique. When you join a Hipline class, your joy is the top priority. You aren’t held to any expectations. The instructors don’t push you to go faster or lift heavier. There’s no competition - no pressure. You are encouraged to take an “internal weather check” and honor wherever you are in your body in that moment. They are nonconformists of the best and most beautiful kind.
I can’t say enough good things about the Hipline staff and the amazing community that they nourish.

I absolutely love hipline!!!!! They are so women-forward and empowering- the classes are literally the highlight of my week. My only wish is that they had more classes at the 4:15 spot so I could go more often! 💕😍🤞

I started dancing at Hipline in the winter of 2025 and it has become a second home for me. I initially tried it out to trick myself into strength training (Power Pop), but quickly fell in love with all their formats (all dance Shimmy Pop and the combo called the Mix). In this space, I have reconnected with my love of dancing, met new people and reconnected with people I hadn’t seen in years. Some of my friends have started coming and I love being able to dance with them in this joyful setting. The crew at the desk is warm and welcoming. The dance style is follow along and the supportive teachers invite you to make the dances your own. If you are Hipline curious, give it a try—you may just love it as much as I do.

I love Hipline!! I'm a non-binary, small fat, queer person who has struggled to find spaces where I felt welcomed and at home, where body movement felt not shameful, but JOYFUL. Hipline is that place!! I particularly love Iso and Kat's classes, but no matter who you dance with, you're bound to have an amazing time. It's also so nice that they offer the ability to join classes over Zoom, so you can still dance it out from home. If you are considering going to Hipline, DO IT!!!

Hipline really is one of the most special spaces in the Bay. It has completely changed my relationship with exercise and is so much more than just a dance studio. On my first day at Hipline, I immediately felt so welcomed by friendly smiles of staff and members going out of their way to say hi and help me feel comfortable in the space. I immediately felt seen and known in this new space which helped me feel like I could fully let loose in the space and dance my heart out. I was so moved by the commitments that Hipline so beautifully embodies - that any movement is exercise and to not punish your body, but enjoy and have gratitude for the opportunity to bask in joyful movement.
In every single class, you can feel the love and passion that each instructor has for their job and their genuine love for teaching and connecting with others through dance. Each instructor's style is so uniquely theirs and it's been such a joy learning from such talented experts in their craft. I've really enjoyed the creative pop-ups and community events as well.
Dancing at Hipline is an energy exchange and 100% of the time I go, I leave feeling connected and in community with others, my soul + spirit is fed, and my mood is lifted for the rest of the day. After going for almost 1 year now, joining the Hipline community has been one of the best decisions I've ever made and I am so grateful to the Hipline team for creating and curating the culture of this space to be so inclusive, intentional and joyful for all!

Had my first class at hipline with Jazz-Ylaine!!! I can't remember when I've felt this alive and awake at 10 in the morning on the Saturday. The work out was outside in the sun and we had a ball! The studio is amazing! It's woman of color owned, has child care and the staff is super welcoming. I cannot wait for my next class.

I've been coming nearly 3 months and I have been telling all my friends. It's a such a positive and fun space and a really great workout. ZERO judgment or gym BS. I've never felt weird if I didn't get the moves down. I've been going 4 days a week lately.

If you need to get back into dance, or try it for the first time, and want to feel fulfilled rather than pressure, this is the place for you. It's not just dance here, it's movement therapy. Tuesday AM Shimmy Pop was the most incredible class to take for my first time. Made me laugh, cry and sweat. Don't second guess, just go.

So much fun to try, I felt really good doing power pop. I should’ve pushed myself a little harder. Overall, the studio doesn’t begin until 9am during the week, which doesn’t work with my schedule, if there was a 7 or 8am class I would go 3-4 times a week 💔

Phenomenal experience at hipline. I heard about hipline from a friend and wasn’t sure what to expect. The online class sign up was really easy and I was offered a free class as a new client. Upon arriving, I checked in at the front desk with my name and received a warm welcome and your from the staff person. I stored my shoes, socks, and phone in a locker they provided and then headed into the studio. The instructor introduced themself with their name and pronouns and immediately made me feel very comfortable. They invited everyone to move in whatever way felt good to our bodies and not worry about performing to typical dance/society standards. I’ll be honest, I have no idea what kind of dance it was other than to say it was fun, expressive, and very freeing. I feel like I got more therapy out of one session of dancing than I have in years of seeing a mental health provider. There was a wide variety of music played, dancers of all shapes, sizes, and ages, and I can’t tell you what the level of the dancers was because I quickly realized it didn’t matter. While we were all dancing together, everyone was really just focused on their own internal experience and expression. At some points there was a disco ball going, and at some points the instructor turned off the lights and just told everyone to dance. Despite all of these words, I don’t feel like I can fully explain the experience I had with those lovely humans. It was a really welcoming and accepting environment. The class instructor wove in affirmations about living our bodies and being confident in our own skin. For any woman or gender minority, even if you’re not a dancer, I would highly recommend checking out Hipline.

This is a weird place. I want to warn people because it was a disturbing experience for me.
The owners act warm and welcoming to get people to join but it soon becomes apparent that they have favorites and if you’re not one- they will let you know. They were openly mean and cruel to me and others.
They make a big deal of being “brown” but they look very white.
It is not a safe place to open your heart and dance.

At this point I'm convinced this business is a scam. They have been emailing me for months after I left the studio because an instructor was incredibly rude to my mother over Zoom early in the pandemic (for context, my mom left the class 20 min in in tears). Ever since they have emailed me soliciting me to take classes, though I have been asking them to stop contacting me for nearly two years now. Don't believe these reviews - wouldn't be surprised if they're offering discounts or teacher opportunities in exchange for writing them. They could not contrast my own experience more.

This place is a safe space. I have always felt very welcome and happy being there. The owner is wonderful, and so are the instructors. I wish my schedule allowed me more time slots to go to more classes. If you have a flexible schedule, getting the monthly membership is awesome!
Try out all the classes you want. That's the best.

Such a positive experience when you practice all style of dance 💃🏾 with them. I definitely encourage others to try Hipline out when you have a chance. Took my first class here with Michelle and it was amazing. As a lifelong dancer and current dance teacher, I was really impressed with her choreography, music, and the energy she brought to class. The choreography is easy enough for non-dancers and new students to follow, but beautiful and technical enough to be enjoyed my trained dancers. The vibe of the studio is awesome, too. Can't wait to go back! Note: classes are barefoot or you can wear dance shoes. I got blood blisters on my big toes, so I recommend wearing shoes at least part of the time if you're not used to dancing barefoot.

I go to Shimmy Pop every single Saturday and it is such a joy to me. I have been looking for a place to have 'joyful movement' - exercise that feels so good and so fun that it doesn't feel like work - for a long time. Hipline is the place for me and I love it so, so much. I love that Hipline is body positive, totally accepting and a safe space. I don't know what I'd do without it.

All time most inclusive, best workout in Oakland. They give a discount for teens, which is a lifesaver. All sizes, ages and shapes take classes, it's so comfortable. You whip through classes without even realizing that you are working out.

I've been taking classes here for nearly 2 years. I always have a blast! The cost is a little steep, but there's lots of packages and it's way cheaper than similar specialty studios.
They have a big focus here on female empowerment, supported by community events, and a general feeling of "I am woman, hear me roar"!
Often in the evening classes, the instructor will turn off the main lights and turn on the disco ball and colored lights! This makes me feel like I'm out dancing at a club minus the hangover and creepy dudes, plus choreography. It's a dream 😊

I had heard so much about Hipline from my fiance and future sister-in-law, and am totally hooked now! I am by no means someone who has a natural sense of rhythm or dancing, and Hipline makes me feel welcomed and celebrated every time I walk through their door. The best part is that you have SO much fun while also getting an incredible workout! The slower and more core-focused Power Pop with Gabriela is an excellent complement to the more vivacious and energetic Shimmy Pop with Deb. The cherry on top is that the instructors are very friendly and supportive! If you're an active woman living in the East Bay, you NEED to check out Hipline!
