Outside of 2 individuals the gym is comprised of extremely rude staff who just mean mug everyone coming in. Extremely weird, whether as a regular or a new person, to smile and say hello and be stared down by the staff like you interrupting their youtube or book is the worst atrocity of the day. Extremely weird vibes that have never improved accompanying rising membership prices and worsened lazy route setting . I'm happy to finally be leaving the bad energy of this gym.

Love the staff but the fact that the only climbing gym in Hollywood doesn’t even have a kilter or moon or any kind of board, is insanely frustrating. Class 5 has all the amenities and Hollywood feels like a dump in comparison. Do better touchstone, we know you have the money.

I love HoBo. I think it's a great climbing gym and I really fw the community. That said, they desperately need to do a better job of advertising their group classes. I mean,,they have some PHENOMENAL classes (I particularly like Zoe's Yoga classes, Amanda's 'Strength & Mobility,' Robin & Amanda's 'Acro Yoga,' and Becky's 'Thai Massage'). The reason I mention this lack of advertising is that some of these classes really depend on even numbers, particularly, Thai Massage.

Most of the members I talk to don't know that Thai Massage (or really any classes for that matter) exists, which is completely bonkers because it is a literal free 45-minute massage,,in LA! I mean, name anywhere else in this city where you can get four 45-minute massages a month included in your $100 membership. Also it's a seriously good massage. Highkey better than most of what you'll find out there.

Anyways, I know I'm kind of going off here but like please y'all,,these teachers are incredible and deserve to be treated as such. We just want more students to be able to share the work with and I think something as simple as a couple Insta posts/stories would make a major difference. I just want these classes to get the attendance that they deserve.

Towels Held Hostage!

Used to love that this gym had towels readily available outside the bathrooms- for hands, showers, and gear. Now, I have to parade my dripping hands to the front desk and politely request one like I’m checking out a library book. It’s the same towel hostage situation that happened at the Pasadena location too. Why make something convenient… inconvenient?

Still love the climbing, but bring your own towel unless you enjoy wet hands and unnecessary conversations.

Coercive and unethical business practices. Preaches inclusion but enforces selectively. Enables staff and friends to harass members. If you expose them then they’ll ban you without cause or reason. I’m surprised this place hasn’t faced a class action yet but it’s more than likely they’ll chase away all the chill people and be left with the weirdos.

I’ve been a member here for over 2 years. HB has a lot to offer for a bouldering gym! Huge variety of problems, compact but solid weight area, only at peak times I’ve had a short wait for my desired cardio equipment. Some yoga classes offered. Solid saunas. Many people come with friends but I prefer a solitary workout, which is respected, I’ve only been beta sprayed like once a year. Diverse crowd, nice to see some fellow LGBT folks every time. A few reviewers are upset about this which seems ridiculous, half or more members seem not to fall into that category. When the lot is full, I’ve never spent more than 10min total looking for a spot then walking to the gym from it. Stanks a bit inside, but I wouldn’t expect it not to.

Suggestions for improvement:
-Have staff utilize the tandem spaces
-Liberalize the guest pass policy—a friend got me hooked as a guest years ago, but now it’s steeply priced except select days
-Some small loyalty perks would be cute!

Overall this gym is not bad. I’m giving it 1 star because as someone that comes when the gym opens (6:30am weekdays and 9am weekends), roughly 20% of the time, the opener is not on time. Whether it’s a scheduling issue or they overslept, I don’t know, but they’re often 30min to hours late. This is especially annoying when I force myself to wake up early to try and get a workout in before work. Everyone would rather sleep in but we make an effort to go to the gym early because of life obligations and responsibilities. It’s incredibly frustrating when you’re on a time crunch and the business doesn’t open when they say they would.

If this happens once or twice it’s excusable, sure, but this happens all the time. I’ve talked to the manager, he’s apologetic and assures that changes will be made but it keeps happening. I don’t know what else to do but to voice my frustrations here.

Touchstone has also raised membership pricing a few times since I’ve joined a little over a year ago, but the quality of my experience has gotten worse. As much as I love these gyms, I may have to start finding a new gym to go to as Hollywood boulders/touchstone clearly don’t respect their members.

Nice bouldering place. All wall angles are available, the gym is quite big and the workout equipment is complete. The route setting is quite nice and interesting problems are definitely there.

On the negative aspects I would say that a board is missing and this is all the American style of boulder where the last hold is a jug since you have to hang at the top of the wall. It takes away a lot of the challenge and I feel it’s more dangerous.

Visited this gym a long time ago when I was in LA. Decided to drop in again for a quick climb. Staff were friendly and got me setup real quick.

The route setting was fun with a range of styles. Comp style, technical and great beginner routes available. Would definitely swing by again / check out the other Touchstone gyms to see how the other facilities compare.

“Zero initiation” ok…this place is super progressive. So that’s a warning to people that are just trying to go about their normal lives. Went here a year ago. I wasn’t doing really well. I got attacked working at a 7-11. It was very violent and I had to rest. For 2 months had ptsd etc. So long story short I recovered. Started taking ju Jitsu which really helped me out. So I started branching out to other physical workouts. That’s why I went here it was up the street says it has weight lifting class, martial arts etc. sounds great. I went to the first martial arts class with Halle. Did not know that it was ONLY for trans, female, or non-binary (basically no straight white men). I was not asked it was just an awkward experience and I left. They ask if I was trans but did not ask if non-binary etc….just so you know I’m (bi-sexual). Or WAS after that experience I’m just sick of that whole community. So now I’m also closeted again….thanks 💅Because I’ve never been accepted by that community….anyways I’d like to keep that to myself, but just would like to point out how wrong you actually were. I got beat up, was trying to better myself then you just open up an unnecessary burden about my sexuality that I really was not trying to think about. Gyms should be gyms idk why this stuff is pushed here…accept everyone. Don’t be a bigot and keep it pushing…your doing more harm than good in your Triumphs of kindness ….also it’s like 100 plus the first month to join. So that was a waste of money…I also found out that all these classes offered including the one that I was idk I’d say (ostracized) from. Are all ran buy random members of the gym not even real staff….ridiculous for a $100+ gym..yea, yea the price goes down to 80, after the first month…

Great gym, Sauna is a plus, unique classes like breathwork, acoyoga, and even partner massage 💆‍♀️ Small gym to work on everything.

Great variety of climbing styles, love the Slab Wall, and the overhang stuff too. They have a whole wall for toping out.

Only negative is the parking lot which is quite small but its not the worst thing ever. Just wait a bit and you'll get a spot.

Did the beginner class yesterday and wasn't sure what to expect. Our instructor (I think Josh but could be wrong) was awesome and super patient. Gave us a great overview of the gym and then a full walkthrough of how to climb. This can often be stressful for some people but he made it fun for everyone in the group and we were actually able to do the 4 climbs we practiced on. Signing up for the monthly membership which seems like a great deal. Vibe wise - it's really cool. Had Soundgarden playing which felt like it was personalized to me and the general mood and setup kinda feels like something from the 90s - which I mean in a good way. I wasn't sure how regimented it would be and if there were strict rules about when and where to climb but it's not and everyone can go at their own pace. Lots of people hang on the mats and chat between climbs which also adds to the 90s vibe since people don't really talk to strangers in public anymore. All in all it's a great place and I'm stoked that it's under a mile from my house.

This is the busiest Touchstone gym for its size.

I avoid this one like the plague!

I'm sick of the lack of care put into this place by the manager. I talked to him directly and he treated me like scum. I am contacting touchstone directly soon.

Overall, they didn't treat me with honor and i plan to leave unless they fix this place asap.

Edit: After some time, I’ve noticed that when it’s busy, the restrooms have unbreathable air.

Its also the sinks, showers, they are just trash or near trash quality and barely functional. It seems obvious they do this because of issues with homelessness in Hollywood. VS the Post or Vertigo have great sinks and showers. disappointing is an understatement! They must fix this because they have raised the rates twice in a few months.

Dave's US gym adventure:

Big fan of the gym. Overall layout, location, and vibe are all pretty epic. Didn't get to experience too much of the amenity other than just pulling onto the wall for a few hours. But cool to see this gym has a sauna, and solid training, cardio and chill out zones.

Climbing movement was good, was nice to see V grades on the problems however the accuracy was very hit and miss, bit of a roller coaster for the ego! Although the gym is tidy enough, holds seems a little old and worn out. Very sparse use of volumes was interesting, on this visit I had a great time but with minimal volume use I wonder if the wall angles and different stations would start to feel a bit same-same if I was a long term member. Due to gym overall scale (big) this is probably not much of an issue.

Community was on point, made a few new friends which is always super nice.

Thanks HoBo for the session!

Of all touchstone climbing gyms in the LA area this is by far the worst. First off why do the employees have the first 3 spots in the already tiny parking lot. They should be the ones using the tandem parking spaces. Not paying customers who have to be called during the middle of their workout to move their car. This is absolutely absurd that a business would even offer that. I’m paying for a gym membership not sharing a parking space at an apartment building.

Second this is the worst maintenance of all of them. The wall and its holds are consistently covered in excess chalk that you can tell the employees never take the time to clean.

Same goes for the bathrooms that always smell terrible including the whole gym floor.

Update: January 2024

I just renewed my annual membership and was informare that after this year they would not be doing the annual membership anymore raising my cost by around 10% annually. Major capitalists at this gym.

This place secretly raises their prices at least once a year.
I understand paying the bills because of inflation but does that mean they lower their prices if inflation comes down.
I doubt it.
Over the past 2 years it has gone up 15-20%. More than CPI.

This climbing gym is absolutely great with so many amenities. The only downside is the limited parking. There’s a small lot behind the gym and street parking. Keep in mind that this is in between the main street and the neighborhood so you may have to drive around for a couple blocks before you find parking, especially during busy times.

There’s a huge variety of bouldering walls of different grades for every type of climber. They also have a gym, both strength training with weights on the first floor and cardio machines on the 2nd floor. They also offer a variety of classes like yoga, etc. The bathrooms are also really nice and clean, with showers and a sauna.

Out of solidarity with staff and BIPOC climbers I will no longer be using Touchstone gyms. In addition to amazing and abundant walls and routes to climb, there’s cardio equipment, weights, cables, yoga/other movement classes, wifi and a mini-working space if you need to get some work done, pop-up boba… oh, a sauna, showers and the bathrooms are really clean.
Hollywood’s work space is a little smaller than Cliffs, and Cliffs seems to have more of a pop-up food variety.

Lots of wall space, no parking space. As expected in LA but still.

Not very inviting friendly for first timers. 😕 I'm serious about climbing, just stopped by since I was around the area.
I'm OK with there rates. no problem, but requested a free day pass to feel the place. They didn't want to give it. I'll go some place else. Nowadays looks like some businesses are just doing you a favor to give you service.
Thanks.

Fantastic staff! Great bouldering courses! Lots of useful facilities and a full calendar of worthwhile classes & events. The attached parking lot is quite small (room for under 20 cars) but it’s not very difficult to find parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Definitely my preferred gym for climbing in the Hollywood area.
